1/2 BPS Wilson loops in non-conformal N = 2 gauge theories and localization: a three-loop analysis

We study the 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop in four-dimensional SU(N), $N = 2$ SYM theories with massless hypermultiplets and non-vanishing $β$-function. Using super-symmetric localization on $S_4$ , we map the path-integral associated with this observable onto an interacting matrix model. Despite the breaking of conformal symmetry at the quantum level, we show that, within a specific regime, the matrix model predictions remain consistent with the perturbative results in flat space up to order $g^6$ . At this order, our analysis reveals that the reorganization of Feynman diagrams based on the matrix model interaction potential, widely tested in (super)conformal models, also applies to these non-conformal set-ups and is realized by interference mechanisms.

Supersymmetric localization and non-conformal $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theories in the perturbative regime

We examine the relation between supersymmetric localization on $\mathbb{S}^4$ and standard QFT results for non-conformal theories in flat space. Specifically, we consider 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops in four-dimensional SU($N$) $\mathcal{N}$= 2 SYM theories with massless hypermultiplets in an arbitrary representation $\mathcal{R}$ such that the $β$-function is non-vanishing. On $\mathbb{S}^4$, localization maps this observable into an interacting matrix model. Although conformal symmetry is broken at the quantum level, we show that within a specific regime of validity the matrix model predictions are consistent with perturbation theory in flat space up to order $g^6$. In particular, at this order, localization predicts two classes of corrections proportional to $ζ(3)$ whose diagrammatic origins in field theory are remarkably different. One class of $ζ(3)$-like corrections emerges via interference effects between evanescent terms and the ultraviolet (UV) poles associated with the bare coupling constant, while the second one stems from a Feynman integral which retains the same form in flat space and on the sphere.

On the $T\bar T$ deformation of the compactified boson and its interpretation in Lattice Gauge Theory

We study the effective string description of space-like Polyakov loop correlators at finite temperature with the goal of describing the behaviour of the space--like string tension in the vicinity of the deconfinement transition. To this end we construct the partition function of the Nambu-Goto effective string theory in presence of a compact transverse direction of length $L$ equal to the inverse temperature. We then show that, under particular conditions, our result can be interpreted as the partition function of the $T\bar T$ deformation of the 2d quantum field theory describing a compactified bosonic field and that this mapping allows a deeper insight on the behaviour of the space-like observables of the theory. In particular we show, by imposing that the spectrum of the model obeys the inviscid Burgers equation, that the $T\bar T$ deformations follow well defined trajectories in the parameter space $(σ,L)$ of the model, where $σ$ is the string tension, which are characterized by a constant value of the dimensionless compactification radius $ρ=L\sqrt{σ/2π}$. We discuss the potential usefulness of these results for studying the space--like string tension of the underlying Lattice Gauge Theory and its behaviour across the deconfinement transition.

New numerical results and novel effective string predictions for Wilson loops

We compute the prediction of the Nambu-Goto effective string model for a rectangular Wilson loop up to three loops. This is done through the use of an operatorial, first order formulation and of the open string analogues of boundary states. This result is interesting since there are universality theorems stating that the predictions up to three loops are common to all effective string models. To test the effective string prediction, we set up the Montecarlo evaluation, in the 3d Ising gauge model, of an observable (the ratio of two Wilson loops with the same perimeter) for which boundary effects are relatively small. Our simulation attains a level of precision which is sufficient to test the two-loop correction. The three-loop correction seems to go in the right direction, but is actually yet beyond the reach of our simulation, since its effect is comparable with the statistical errors of the latter.

The exact 8d chiral ring from 4d recursion relations

We consider the local F-theory set-up corresponding to four D7 branes in type I' theory, in which the exact axio-dilaton background tau(z) is identified with the low-energy effective coupling of the four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2) and Nf=4 flavours living on a probe D3 brane placed at position z. Recently, an intriguing relation has been found between the correlators forming the chiral ring of the eight-dimensional theory on the D7 branes and the large-z expansion of the tau profile. Here we apply to the SU(2), Nf=4 theory some recursion techniques that allow to derive the coefficients of the large-z expansion of tau in terms of modular functions of the UV coupling. In this way we obtain exact expressions for the elements of the eight-dimensional chiral ring that resum their instanton expansions, previously known only up to the first few orders by means of localization techniques.

Holographic non-perturbative corrections to gauge couplings

We give a direct microscopic derivation of the F-theory background that corresponds to four D7 branes of type I' theory by taking into account the D-instanton contributions to the emission of the axio-dilaton field in the directions transverse to the D7's. The couplings of the axio-dilaton to the D-instanton moduli modify its classical source terms which are shown to be proportional to the elements of the D7 brane chiral ring. Solving the bulk field equations with the non-perturbatively corrected sources yields the full F-theory background. This solution represents the gravitational dual of the four-dimensional theory living on a probe D3 brane of type I', namely of the N=2, Sp(1) SYM theory with Nf=4. Our results provide an explicit microscopic derivation of the non-perturbative gravitational dual of this theory. They also explain the recent observation that the exact coupling for this theory can be entirely reconstructed from its perturbative part plus the knowledge of the chiral ring on the D7 branes supporting its flavor degrees of freedom.

Stringy instanton corrections to N=2 gauge couplings

We discuss a string model where a conformal four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory receives corrections to its gauge kinetic functions from "stringy" instantons. These contributions are explicitly evaluated by exploiting the localization properties of the integral over the stringy instanton moduli space. The model we consider corresponds to a setup with D7/D3-branes in type I' theory compactified on T4/Z2 x T2, and possesses a perturbatively computable heterotic dual. In the heteoric side the corrections to the quadratic gauge couplings are provided by a 1-loop threshold computation and, under the duality map, match precisely the first few stringy instanton effects in the type I' setup. This agreement represents a very non-trivial test of our approach to the exotic instanton calculus.

Exotic instanton counting and heterotic/type I' duality

We compute the partition function for the exotic instanton system corresponding to D-instantons on D7 branes in Type I' theory. We exploit the BRST structure of the moduli action and its deformation by RR background to fully localize the integration. The resulting prepotential describes non-perturbative corrections to the quartic couplings of the gauge field F living on the D7's. The results match perfectly those obtained in the dual heterotic theory from a protected 1-loop computation, thus providing a non-trivial test of the duality itself.

Classical solutions for exotic instantons?

We consider the D7/D(--1) system in Type I' as a prototypical "exotic" brane instanton. With respect to systems such as the D3/D(-1) ones, which correspond to gauge instantons in four dimensions, exotic systems lack the bosonic mixed moduli w of the ADHM construction, related to the instanton size, and their possible field-theoretical interpretation as classical solutions is an important open question. For the system at hand, we propose that it corresponds to the point-like limit of the eight-dimensional so-called SO(8) instanton solution. This configuration is a solution of the quartic term of the non-abelian D7 action, i.e., the term which stays finite in the limit in which alpha' goes to zero with the string coupling fixed that preserves the D(-1) effects. As a necessary consistency condition, we check that the next order term in the non-abelian effective action vanishes on the SO(8) solution so that the limit we take is well-defined.

Flux interactions on D-branes and instantons

We provide a direct world-sheet derivation of the couplings of NS-NS and R-R fluxes to various types of D-branes (including instantonic ones) by evaluating disk amplitudes among two open string vertex operators at a generic brane intersection and one closed string vertex representing the background fluxes. This world-sheet approach is in full agreement with the derivation of the flux couplings in the brane effective actions based on supergravity methods, but it is applicable also to more general brane configurations involving fields with twisted boundary conditions. As an application, we consider an orbifold compactification of Type IIB string theory with fractional D-branes preserving N=1 supersymmetry and study the flux-induced fermionic mass terms both on space-filling branes and on instantonic ones. Our results show the existence of a relation between the soft supersymmetry breaking and the lifting of some instanton fermionic zero-modes, which may lead to new types of non-perturbative couplings in brane-world models.

Anomalous couplings of type 0 D-branes

Closed type 0 string theories and their D-branes are introduced. The full Wess-Zumino action of these D-branes is derived. The analogy with type II is emphasized throughout the argument.

On D-branes in Type 0 String Theory

Using boundary states we derive the presence of (chiral) fermions on the intersection of type 0 D-branes. The corresponding anomalous couplings on the branes are then computed. Furthermore, we discuss systems of branes sitting at $A_n$ singularities. In particular, the massless spectrum on the branes is derived, and a boundary state description is given.

N=4 Versus N=2 Phases, HyperkÄhler Quotients and the 2D Topological Twist

We consider N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in two-dimensions, coupled to matter multiplets. In analogy with the N=2 case also in the N=4 case one can introduce Fayet-Iliopoulos terms. The associated three-parameters have the meaning of momentum-map levels in a HyperKähler quotient construction. Differently from the N=2 case, however, the N=4 has a single phase corresponding to an effective $σ$-model. There is no Landau-Ginzburg phase. The main possible application of our N=4 model is to an effective Lagrangian construction of a $σ$-model on ALE-manifolds. We discuss the A and B topological twists of these models clarifying some issues not yet discussed in the literature, in particular the identification of the topological systems emerging from the twist. Applying our results to the case of ALE-manifolds we indicate how one can use the topologically twisted theories to study the Kähler class and complex structure deformations of these gravitational instantons.
