A Python Benchmark Functions Framework for Numerical Optimisation Problems

This work proposes a framework of benchmark functions designed to facilitate the creation of test cases for numerical optimisation techniques. The framework, written in Python 3, is designed to be easy to install, use, and expand. The collection includes some of the most used multi-modal continuous functions present in literature, which can be instantiated using an arbitrary number of dimensions. Meta-information of each benchmark function, like search boundaries and position of known optima, are included and made easily accessible through class methods. Built-in interactive visualisation capabilities, baseline techniques, and rigorous testing protocols complement the features of the framework. A continuity result for the adjusted normal cone operator

The concept of adjusted sublevel set for a quasiconvex function was introduced in \cite{AuHa05} and the local existence of a norm-to-weak$^*$ upper semicontinuous base-valued submap of the normal operator associated to the adjusted sublevel set was proved. When the space is finite dimensional, a globally defined upper semicontinuous base-valued submap is obtained taking the intersection of the unit sphere, which is compact, with the normal operator, which is closed. Unfortunately, this technique does not work in the infinite dimensional case. We propose a partition of unity technique to overcome this problem in Banach spaces. Application is given to a quasiconvex quasioptimization problem through the use of a new existence result for generalized quasivariational inequalities which is based on the Schauder fixed point theorem.

Faint objects in motion: the new frontier of high precision astrometry

Sky survey telescopes and powerful targeted telescopes play complementary roles in astronomy. In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the James Webb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. The goal of this White Paper is to address the fundamental science questions that are at stake when we focus on the motions of faint sky objects and to briefly review instrumentation and mission profiles.

Horizontal branch morphology: A new photometric parametrization

Theory and observations indicate that the distribution of stars along the horizontal branch of Galactic globular clusters mainly depends on the metal content. However, the existence of globular clusters with similar metal content and absolute age but different horizontal branch morphologies, suggests the presence of another parameter affecting the star distribution along the branch. To investigate the variation of the horizontal branch morphology in Galactic globular clusters, we define a new photometric horizontal branch morphology index, overcoming some of the limitations and degeneracies affecting similar indices available in the literature. We took advantage of a sample of 64 Galactic globular clusters, with both space-based imaging data and homogeneous ground-based photometric catalogues in five different bands ($U$,$B$,$V$, $R$, $I$). The new index, $τ_{HB}$, is defined as the ratio between the areas subtended by the cumulative number distribution in magnitude ($I$) and in colour ($V-I$) of all stars along the horizontal branch. This new index shows a linear trend over the entire range in metallicity (-2.35 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ -0.12) covered by our Galactic globular cluster sample. We found a linear relation between $τ_{HB}$ and absolute cluster ages. We also found a quadratic anti-correlation with [Fe/H], becoming linear when we eliminate the age effect on $τ_{HB}$ values. Moreover, we identified a subsample of eight clusters that are peculiar according to their $τ_{HB}$ values. These clusters have bluer horizontal branch morphology when compared to typical ones of similar metallicity. These findings allow us to define them as the 'second parameter' clusters in the sample. A comparison with synthetic horizontal branch models suggests that they cannot be entirely explained with a spread in helium content.

A Ky Fan minimax inequality for quasiequilibria on finite dimensional spaces

Several results concerning existence of solutions of a quasiequilibrium problem defined on a finite dimensional space are established. The proof of the first result is based on a Michael selection theorem for lower semicontinuous set-valued maps which holds in finite dimensional spaces. Furthermore this result allows one to locate the position of a solution. Sufficient conditions, which are easier to verify, may be obtained by imposing restrictions either on the domain or on the bifunction. These facts make it possible to yield various existence results which reduce to the well known Ky Fan minimax inequality when the constraint map is constant and the quasiequilibrium problem coincides with an equilibrium problem. Lastly, a comparison with other results from the literature is discussed.

Approximate solutions of quasiequilibrium problems in Banach spaces

In this note we show that a recent existence result on quasiequilibrium problems, which seems to improve deeply some well-known results, is not correct. We exhibit a counterexample and we furnish a generalization of a lemma about continuous "-minimizers of quasiconvex functions depending on a parameter. This allows to establish an existence result of approximate solutions of quasiequilibrium problems.

We present the alpha release of the VOGCLUSTERS web application, specialized for data and text mining on globular clusters. It is one of the web2.0 technology based services of Data Mining & Exploration (DAME) Program, devoted to mine and explore heterogeneous information related to globular clusters data.

Antlia: an outskirt Local Group Galaxy

Deep (I,V-I) and (I,B-I) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Antlia dwarf galaxy, based on Science Verification (SV) data collected with the FORS I camera on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented. By adopting the new calibration of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) provided by Salaris & Cassisi (1998) we estimated that the Antlia distance modulus is (m-M)o=25.98 with an error of 0.10 mag. We suggest an improvement of the classical TRGB method based on infrared H and K magnitudes of TRGB stars. Such a method should overcome the well-known limit of the "classical" TRGB method when dealing with metal-rich stellar populations.

The Tucana dwarf galaxy

Deep CCD photometry (NTT, HST data) for the dwarf galaxy in Tucana is presented, down to V=27.5. Distance modulus and metallicity are derived, together with an estimate of the age of the galaxy.
