Metric tensors and two-forms in information geometry from the GNS construction

We develop a GNS-based construction of geometric tensors on smooth parametric statistical models over $C^*$-algebras. Since the state space of a $C^*$-algebra is generally not a smooth manifold, the construction does not rely on pulling back tensors from an ambient state manifold. Instead, the GNS Hilbert spaces and their duals are organized into non-locally-trivial Hilbert fibrations over the state space. For models satisfying a compatibility condition expressing derivatives of expectation values as continuous functionals on the realified GNS fibers, each tangent vector admits a canonical dual GNS representative. Pulling back the dual GNS Hermitian product along the corresponding canonical lift produces a Hermitian tensor $K$ on the complexified tangent bundle of the model, whose real and imaginary parts define, under suitable regularity assumptions, a smooth weak Riemannian metric tensor $G$ and a smooth two-form $Ω$. In finite-dimensional parameter manifolds the metric is, of course, strong. The construction recovers the Fisher--Rao metric in the commutative dominated case, the Fubini--Study geometry for pure states up to the normalization and sign convention imposed by the dual GNS pairing, and the SLD metric for faithful quantum states. In finite-dimensional faithful models, the two-form $Ω$ is proportional, up to convention, to the expected commutator of the SLD representatives, equivalently to the mean Uhlmann curvature. We show through faithful qubits and displaced thermal states that $Ω$ need not be closed. For bundle-regular models, the associated fiberwise symplectic form on the real dual GNS bundle admits connection-dependent closed extensions to the total space, while closedness of $Ω$ on the parameter manifold is controlled by the covariant exterior derivative of the canonical real dual GNS lift.

Lie-Poisson reduction in principal bundles by a subgroup of the structure group

We study Hamiltonian field theories on the multisymplectic bundle of a principal G-bundle with Hamiltonian densities invariant under a subgroup $H\subset G$. Using the covariant bracket formulation, we reduce the polysymplectic space and derive the corresponding reduced observables, brackets, and equations of motion, yielding a Lie--Poisson reduction by a subgroup for field theories. We also address the reconstruction problem, characterizing reconstruction in terms of the flatness of an associated connection. Several examples, including the heavy top, molecular strands with broken symmetry, and affine principal bundles, illustrate the general framework.

Hamiltonian Reduction in Affine Principal Bundles

This paper presents a Hamiltonian reduction procedure for field theories over affine principal bundles introducing a canonical identification to describe the reduced multisymplectic space without the introduction of a connection. The main goal is to provide a Hamiltonian analogue of the Lagrangian reduction theory developed in M. Castrillón López, P. M. Chacón, and P. L. García. J. Geom. Mech., 5(4):399-414, 2013. The core of this work lies in the derivation of this canonical identification, the reduced Hamilton-Cartan equations, and a reduced covariant bracket that describes the dynamics. Finally, this theoretical framework is illustrated with a fundamental example: molecular strands.

Canonical Reductive Decomposition of Extrinsic Homogeneous Submanifolds

Let $\overline{M}=\overline{G}/\overline{H}$ be a homogeneous Riemannian manifold. Given a Lie subgroup $G\subset \overline{G}$ and a reductive decomposition of the homogeneous structure of $\overline{M}$, we analyze a canonical reductive decomposition for the orbits of the action of $G$. These leaves of the $G$-action are extrinsic homogeneous submanifolds and the analysis of the reductive decomposition of them is related with their extrinsic properties. We connect the study with works in the literature and initiate the relationship with the Ambrose-Singer theorem and homogeneous structures of submanifolds.

Lorentzian symmetric spaces which are Einstein-Yang-Mills with respect to invariant metric connections

We classify four-dimensional connected simply-connected indecomposable Lorentzian symmetric spaces $M$ with connected nontrivial isotropy group furnishing solutions of the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations. Those solutions with respect to some invariant metric connection $Λ$ in the bundle of orthonormal frames of $M$ and some diagonal metric on the holonomy algebra corresponding to $Λ$.

Privacy-preserving machine learning with tensor networks

Tensor networks, widely used for providing efficient representations of low-energy states of local quantum many-body systems, have been recently proposed as machine learning architectures which could present advantages with respect to traditional ones. In this work we show that tensor network architectures have especially prospective properties for privacy-preserving machine learning, which is important in tasks such as the processing of medical records. First, we describe a new privacy vulnerability that is present in feedforward neural networks, illustrating it in synthetic and real-world datasets. Then, we develop well-defined conditions to guarantee robustness to such vulnerability, which involve the characterization of models equivalent under gauge symmetry. We rigorously prove that such conditions are satisfied by tensor-network architectures. In doing so, we define a novel canonical form for matrix product states, which has a high degree of regularity and fixes the residual gauge that is left in the canonical forms based on singular value decompositions. We supplement the analytical findings with practical examples where matrix product states are trained on datasets of medical records, which show large reductions on the probability of an attacker extracting information about the training dataset from the model's parameters. Given the growing expertise in training tensor-network architectures, these results imply that one may not have to be forced to make a choice between accuracy in prediction and ensuring the privacy of the information processed.

The Ambrose-Singer Theorem for cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifolds

We characterize isometric actions whose principal orbits are hypersurfaces through the existence of a linear connection satisfying a set of covariant equations in the same spirit as the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for homogeneous space. These results are then used to describe isometric cohomogeneity one foliations in terms of such connections. Finally, we provide explicit examples of these objects in Euclidean spaces and real hyperbolic spaces.

Higher-order Euler-Poincaré field equations

We develop a reduction theory for $G$-invariant Lagrangian field theories defined on the higher-order jet bundle of a principal $G$-bundle, thus obtaining the higher-order Euler-Poincaré field equations. To that end, we transfer the Hamilton's principle to the reduced configuration bundle, which is identified with the bundle of flat connections (up to a certain order) of the principal $G$-bundle. As a result, the reconstruction condition is always satisfied and, hence, every solution of the reduced field equations locally comes from a solution of the original (unreduced) equations. Furthermore, the reduced equations are shown to be equivalent to the conservation of the Noether current. Lastly, we illustrate the theory by investigating multivariate higher-order splines on Lie groups.

Gauge reduction in covariant field theory

In this work, we develop a Lagrangian reduction theory for covariant field theories with gauge symmetries. These symmetries are modeled by a Lie group fiber bundle acting fiberwisely on a configuration bundle. In order to reduce the variational principle, we utilize generalized principal connections, a type of Ehresmann connections that are equivariant by the fiberwise action. After obtaining the reduced equations, we give the reconstruction condition and we relate the vertical reduced equation with the Noether theorem. Lastly, we illustrate the theory with several examples, including the classical case (Lagrange-Poincaré reduction), Electromagnetism, symmetry-breaking and non-Abelian gauge theories.

Poisson-Poincaré reduction for Field Theories

Given a Hamiltonian system on a fiber bundle, there is a Poisson covariant formulation of the Hamilton equations. When a Lie group G acts freely, properly, preserving the fibers of the bundle and the Hamiltonian density is G-invariant, we study the reduction of this formulation to obtain an analogue of Poisson-Poincaré reduction for field theories. This procedure is related to the Lagrange-Poincaré reduction for field theories via a Legendre transformation. Finally, an application to a model of a charged strand evolving in an electric field is given.

Higher order jet bundles of Lie group-valued functions

For each positive integer $k$, the bundle of $k$-jets of functions from a smooth manifold, $X$, to a Lie group, $G$, is denoted by $J^k(X,G)$ and it is canonically endowed with a Lie groupoid structure over $X$. In this work, we utilize a linear connection to trivialize this bundle, i.e., to build an injective bundle morphism from $J^k(X,G)$ into a vector bundle over $G$. Afterwards, we give the explicit expression of the groupoid multiplication on the trivialized space, as well as the formula for the inverse element. In the last section, a coordinated chart on $X$ is considered and the local expression of the trivialization is computed.

Principal bundles and connections modelled by Lie group bundles

In this work, generalized principal bundles modelled by Lie group bundle actions are investigated. In particular, the definition of equivariant connections in these bundles, associated to Lie group bundle connections, is provided, together with the analysis of their existence and their main properties. The final part gives some examples. In particular, since this research was initially originated by some problems on geometric reduction of gauge field theories, we revisit the classical Utiyama Theorem from the perspective investigated in the article.

The homogeneous geometries of complex hyperbolic space

We describe the holonomy algebras of all canonical connections and their action on complex hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{H}(n)$ in all dimensions ($n\in\mathbb{N}$). This thorough investigation yields a formula for all Kahler homogeneous structures on complex hyperbolic spaces. Finally, we have related the belonging of the homogeneous structures to the different Tricerri and Vanhecke's (or Abbena and Garbiero's) orthogonal and irreducible $\mathrm{U}(n)$-submodules with concrete and determined expressions of the holonomy.

Lagrangian Reduction by Stages in Field Theory

We propose a category of bundles in order to perform Lagrangian reduction by stages in covariant Field Theory. This category plays an analogous role to Lagrange-Poincaré bundles in Lagrangian reduction by stages in Mechanics and includes both jet bundles and reduced covariant configuration spaces. Furthermore, we analyze the resulting reconstruction condition and formulate the Noether theorem in this context. Finally, a model of a molecular strand with rotors is seen as an application of this theoretical frame.

Structure of Gauge-Invariant Lagrangians

The theory of gauge fields in Theoretical Physics poses several mathematical problems of interest in Differential Geometry and in Field Theory. Below we tackle one of these problems: The existence of a finite system of generators of gauge-invariant Lagrangians and how to compute them. More precisely, if $p\colon C\to M$ is the bundle of connections on a principal $G$-bundle $π\colon P\to M$, then a finite number $L_1,\dotsc,L_{N^\prime }$ of gauge-invariant Lagrangians defined on $J^1C$ is proved to exist such that for any other gauge-invariant Lagrangian $L\in C^\infty (J^1C)$ there exists a function $F\in C^\infty (\mathbb{R}^{N^\prime })$ such that $L=F(L_1,\dotsc,L_{N^\prime})$. Several examples are dealt with explicitly.

Differential characters and cohomology of the moduli of flat Connections

Let $π\colon P\to M$ be a principal bundle and $p$ an invariant polynomial of degree r on the Lie algebra of the structure group. The theory of Chern-Simons differential characters is exploited to define an homology map $χ^{k} : H_{2r-k-1}(M)\times H_{k}(\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G})\to \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, for $k<r-1$, where $\mathcal{F} /\mathcal{G}$ is the moduli space of flat connections of $π$ under the action of a subgroup $\mathcal{G}$ of the gauge group. The differential characters of first order are related to the Dijkgraaf-Witten action for Chern-Simons Theory. The second order characters are interpreted geometrically as the holonomy of a connection in a line bundle over $\mathcal{F}/\mathcal{G})$. The relationship with other constructions in the literature is also analyzed.

Invariants for the Lagrangian Equivalence Problem

Let $M$ be a connected smooth manifold, let $\operatorname{Aut}(p)$ be the group automorphisms of the bundle $p\colon \mathbb{R}\times M\to \mathbb{R}$, and let $q\colon J^1(\mathbb{R},M)\times \mathbb{R\to }J^1(\mathbb{R},M)$ be the canonical projection. Invariant functions on $J^r(q)$ under the natural action of $\operatorname{Aut}(p)$ are discussed in relationship with the Lagrangian equivalence problem. The second-order invariants are determined geometrically as well as some other higher-order invariants for $\dim M\geq 2$.

Flat connections and cohomology invariants

The main goal of this article is to construct some geometric invariants for the topology of the set $\mathcal{F}$ of flat connections on a principal $G$-bundle $P\,\longrightarrow\, M$. Although the characteristic classes of principal bundles are trivial when $\mathcal{F}\neq \emptyset$, their classical Chern-Weil construction can still be exploited to define a homomorphism from the set of homology classes of maps $S\longrightarrow \mathcal{F}$ to the cohomology group $H^{2r-k}(M,\mathbb{R})$, where $S$ is null-cobordant $(k-1)$-manifold, once a $G$-invariant polynomial $p$ of degree $r$ on $\text{Lie}(G)$ is fixed. For $S=S^{k-1}$, this gives a homomorphism $π_{k-1}(\mathcal{F})\longrightarrow H^{2r-k}(M,\mathbb{R})$. The map is shown to be globally gauge invariant and furthermore it descends to the moduli space of flat connections $\mathcal{F}/\mathrm{Gau}P$, modulo cohomology with integer coefficients. The construction is also adapted to complex manifolds. In this case, one works with the set $\mathcal{F}^{0,2}$ of connections with vanishing $(0,2)$-part of the curvature, and the Dolbeault cohomology. Some examples and applications are presented.
