Compton Amplitude for Rotating Black Hole from QFT

We construct a candidate tree-level gravitational Compton amplitude for a rotating Kerr black hole, for any quantum spin s=0,1/2,1,...,$\infty$, from which we extract the corresponding classical amplitude to all orders in the spin vector $S^μ$. We use multiple insights from massive higher-spin quantum field theory, such as massive gauge invariance and improved behavior in the massless limit. A chiral-field approach is particularly helpful in ensuring correct degrees of freedom, and for writing down compact off-shell interactions for general spin. The simplicity of the interactions is echoed in the structure of the spin-s Compton amplitude, for which we use homogeneous symmetric polynomials of the spin variables. Where possible, we compare to the general-relativity results in the literature, available up to eighth order in spin.

The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 2: An Invitation to Color-Kinematics Duality and the Double Copy

Advances in scattering amplitudes have exposed previously-hidden color-kinematics and double-copy structures in theories ranging from gauge and gravity theories to effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory and the Born-Infeld model. These novel structures both simplify higher-order calculations and pose tantalizing questions related to a unified framework underlying relativistic quantum theories. This introductory mini-review article invites further exploration of these topics. After a brief introduction to color-kinematics duality and the double copy as they emerges at tree and loop-level in gauge and gravity theories, we present two distinct examples: 1) an introduction to the web of double-copy-constructible theories, and 2) a discussion on the application of the double copy to calculation relevant to gravitational-wave physics.

Non-compact gauge groups, tensor fields and Yang-Mills-Einstein amplitudes

Scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills-Einstein theories have been investigated mostly for compact gauge groups. While non-compact gauge groups are not physically viable in Yang-Mills theory, non-compact gaugings feature prominently in the supergravity literature, where any choice of perturbative vacuum spontaneously breaks the gauge group to a compact subgroup. In this paper, we formulate double-copy constructions for several five-dimensional N=2 supergravities with non-compact gauge groups. On one side of the double copy, we employ amplitudes from a super-Yang-Mills theory with a massive hypermultiplet. On the other, we use amplitudes from particular non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-scalar theories with massive fermions, chosen to obey constraints coming from color/kinematics duality. Supergravities with massive self-dual tensors in five dimensions are also considered, showing that tensors are straightforwardly realized as double copies of gauge-theory fermions with suitable choices of signs in the corresponding solutions of the Dirac equation. We present several examples of these constructions, noting in particular the appearance of Heisenberg groups in the supergravity gauge symmetry and, in some cases, the possibility of exotic tensor-vector matter couplings.

Kerr Black Holes From Massive Higher-Spin Gauge Symmetry

We propose that the dynamics of Kerr black holes is strongly constrained by the principle of gauge symmetry. We initiate the construction of EFTs for Kerr black holes of any integer quantum spin s using Stueckelberg fields, and show that the known three-point Kerr amplitudes are uniquely predicted using massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. This symmetry is argued to be connected to an enhanced range of validity for the Kerr EFTs. We consider the closely related root-Kerr electromagnetic solution in parallel, for which the dynamical interactions with photons are also constrained by massive higher-spin gauge symmetry. Finally, the spin-s Compton amplitudes are analyzed, and we discuss contact-term constraints at s=2 from Ward identities.

From higher-spin gauge interactions to Compton amplitudes for root-Kerr

We develop massive higher-spin theory as a framework for describing dynamics of rotating compact objects, such as Kerr black holes. In this paper, we explore gauge interactions up to quartic order and corresponding Compton amplitudes of higher-spin massive objects coupled to electromagnetism and Yang-Mills theory. Their classical counterparts are known as root-Kerr gauge-theory solutions, whose amplitudes are closely related to those of Kerr black holes. We use three distinct approaches: (i) massive higher-spin gauge symmetry to introduce cubic interactions for all spins and the quartic interactions up to spin 3, which is implemented both off shell and via Ward identities; (ii) a chiral higher-spin approach to construct quartic Lagrangians with correct degrees of freedom to all spins; (iii) on-shell functional patterns before and after taking the classical limit to constrain the Compton amplitudes. As final results, we arrive at simple local formulae for the candidate root-Kerr Compton amplitudes both in the quantum regime and classical limit, to all orders in spin. This is a precursor to the gravitational Kerr case, which is presented in a follow-up paper.

Supergravity amplitudes, the double copy and ultraviolet behavior

In this chapter, we present a scattering-amplitudes perspective on supergravity, and describe its application to the study of ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories at high loop orders. The basic on-shell tools that make such calculations feasible are reviewed, including generalized unitarity, color-kinematics duality, and the double-copy construction. We also outline the web of theories connected by the double copy. The results of various calculations of potential ultraviolet divergences are summarized. These include puzzling enhanced ultraviolet cancellations, for which no symmetry-based understanding currently exists, showing that there is much more to learn about the ultraviolet properties of supergravity theories. We finally comment on future calculations that should help resolve the puzzles.

Snowmass White Paper: Higher Spin Gravity and Higher Spin Symmetry

Higher Spin Gravity refers to extensions of gravity including at least one field of spin greater than two. These extensions are expected to provide manageable models of quantum gravity thanks to the infinite-dimensional (higher spin) gauge symmetry constraining them. One of the key aspects of Higher Spin Gravity/Symmetry is the range and diversity of topics it embraces: (a) higher spin fields play a role in quantum gravity, AdS/CFT, string theory and are expected to have important consequences in cosmology and black hole physics; (b) higher spin symmetry finds applications in Conformal Field Theories, condensed matter systems and dualities therein; (c) these models often rely on tools developed in the study of the mathematical foundations of QFT or in pure mathematics: from deformation quantization and non-commutative geometry to conformal geometry, graded geometry (including BV-BRST quantization), and geometry of PDEs. Recent exciting applications also involve (d) modelling the coalescence of black hole binaries as scattering of massive higher spin particles.

Snowmass White Paper: the Double Copy and its Applications

The double copy is, in essence, a map between scattering amplitudes in a broad variety of familiar field and string theories. In addition to the mathematically rich intrinsic structure, it underlies a multitude of active research directions and has a range of interesting applications in quantum, classical and effective field theories, including broad topics such as string theory, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology. This Snowmass white paper provides a brief introduction to the double copy, its applications, current research and future challenges.

Compton Black-Hole Scattering for $s \leq 5/2$

Quantum scattering amplitudes for massive matter have received new attention in connection to classical calculations relevant to gravitational-wave physics. Amplitude methods and insights are now employed for precision computations of observables needed for describing the gravitational dynamics of bound massive objects such as black holes. An important direction is the inclusion of spin effects needed to accurately describe rotating (Kerr) black holes. Higher-spin amplitudes introduced by Arkani-Hamed, Huang and Huang at three points have by now a firm connection to the effective description of Kerr black-hole physics. The corresponding Compton higher-spin amplitudes remain however an elusive open problem. Here we draw from results of the higher-spin literature and show that physical insights can be used to uniquely fix the Compton amplitudes up to spin 5/2, by imposing a constraint on a three-point higher-spin current that is a necessary condition for the existence of an underlying unitary theory. We give the unique effective Lagrangians up to spin $5/2$, and show that they reproduce the previously-known amplitudes. For the multi-graviton amplitudes analogous to the Compton amplitude, no further corrections to our Lagrangians are expected, and hence such amplitudes are uniquely predicted. As an essential tool, we introduce a modified version of the massive spinor-helicity formalism which allows us to conveniently obtain higher-spin states, propagators and compact expressions for the amplitudes.

Spinor-helicity formalism for massive and massless amplitudes in five dimensions

Five-dimensional gauge and gravity theories are known to exhibit striking properties. D=5 is the lowest dimension where massive tensor states appear naturally, providing a testing ground for perturbative insights into six-dimensional tensor theories. Five-dimensional supergravities are highly constrained and admit elegant geometric and algebraic formulations, with global symmetries manifest at the Lagrangian level. In this paper, we take a step towards the systematic investigation of amplitudes in five dimensions, and present a five-dimensional version of the spinor-helicity formalism, applicable to massless, massive and supersymmetric states. We give explicit representations for on-shell spinor and polarization variables such that the little-group symmetry and gauge redundancy are manifest. Massive self-dual tensor states are discussed in some detail, as well as all the on-shell supermultiplets that can appear in matter-coupled gauge and supergravity theories. As a byproduct of considering supersymmetry in the presence of central charge, we obtain massless ten-dimensional Majorana-Weyl spinors as products of five-dimensional massive spinors. We present compact expressions for superamplitudes at multiplicity three and four, including several novel superamplitudes that either do not straightforwardly uplift to six dimensions, or have not appeared in the six-dimensional literature. We discuss several examples of five-dimensional double-copy constructions in the context of gravitational theories with massive vectors and tensors, illustrating that the formalism we construct can also be used to considerably streamline the double-copy construction of N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravities.

The Duality Between Color and Kinematics and its Applications

This review describes the duality between color and kinematics and its applications, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the perturbative structure of gauge and gravity theories. We emphasize, in particular, applications to loop-level calculations, the broad web of theories linked by the duality and the associated double-copy structure, and the issue of extending the duality and double copy beyond scattering amplitudes. The review is aimed at doctoral students and junior researchers both inside and outside the field of amplitudes and is accompanied by various exercises.

Non-Abelian gauged supergravities as double copies

Scattering amplitudes have the potential to provide new insights to the study of supergravity theories with gauged R-symmetry and Minkowski vacua. Such gaugings break supersymmetry spontaneously, either partly or completely. In this paper, we develop a framework for double-copy constructions of Abelian and non-Abelian gaugings of N=8 supergravity with these properties. They are generally obtained as the double copy of a spontaneously-broken (possibly supersymmeric) gauge theory and a theory with explicitly-broken supersymmetry. We first identify purely-adjoint deformations of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory that preserve the duality between color and kinematics. A combination of Higgsing and orbifolding yields the needed duality-satisfying gauge-theory factors with multiple matter representations. We present three explicit examples. Two are Cremmer-Scherk-Schwarz gaugings with unbroken N=6,4 supersymmetry and U(1) gauge group. The third has unbroken N=4 supersymmetry and SU(2)xU(1) gauge group. We also discuss examples in which the double-copy method gives theories with explicitly-broken supersymmetry.

One-loop Amplitudes for N=2 Homogeneous Supergravities

We compute one-loop matter amplitudes in homogeneous Maxwell-Einstein supergravities with N=2 supersymmetry using the double-copy construction. We start from amplitudes of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory with matter that obey manifestly the duality between color and kinematics. Taking advantage of the fact that amplitudes with external hypermultiplets have kinematical numerators which do not present any explicit dependence on the loop momentum, we find a relation between the one-loop divergence of the supergravity amplitudes and the beta function of the non-supersymmetric gauge theory entering the construction. Two distinct linearized counterterms are generated at one loop. The divergence corresponding to the first is nonzero for all homogeneous supergravities, while the divergence associated to the second vanishes only in the case of the four Magical supergravities.

Heterotic and bosonic string amplitudes via field theory

Previous work has shown that massless tree amplitudes of the type I and IIA/B superstrings can be dramatically simplified by expressing them as double copies between field-theory amplitudes and scalar disk/sphere integrals, the latter containing all the $α'$-corrections. In this work, we pinpoint similar double-copy constructions for the heterotic and bosonic string theories using an $α'$-dependent field theory and the same disk/sphere integrals. Surprisingly, this field theory, built out of dimension-six operators such as $(D_μF^{μν})^2$, has previously appeared in the double-copy construction of conformal supergravity. We elaborate on the $α' \rightarrow \infty$ limit in this picture and derive new amplitude relations for various gauge-gravity theories from those of the heterotic string.

Gauged supergravities and spontaneous SUSY breaking from the double copy

Supergravities with gauged R-symmetry and Minkowski vacua allow for spontaneous supersymmetry breaking and, as such, provide a framework for building supergravity models of phenomenological relevance. In this letter we initiate the study of double-copy constructions for these supergravities. We argue that, on general grounds, we expect their scattering amplitudes to be described by a double copy of the type: (Higgsed gauge theory) x (gauge theory with broken SUSY). We present a simple realization in which the resulting supergravity has U(1)_R gauge symmetry, spontaneously-broken N=2 supersymmetry, and massive gravitini. This is the first instance of a double-copy construction of a gauged supergravity and of a theory with spontaneously-broken supersymmetry. The construction extends in a straightforward manner to a large family of gauged Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravity theories with or without spontaneous gauge-symmetry breaking.

Complete construction of magical, symmetric and homogeneous N=2 supergravities as double copies of gauge theories

We show that scattering amplitudes in magical, symmetric or homogeneous N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravities can be obtained as double copies of two gauge theories, using the framework of color/kinematics duality. The left-hand-copy is N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory coupled to a hypermultiplet, whereas the right-hand-copy is a non-supersymmetric theory that can be identified as the dimensional reduction of a D-dimensional Yang-Mills theory coupled to P fermions. For generic D and P, the double copy gives homogeneous supergravities. For P=1 and D=7,8,10,14, it gives the magical supergravities. We compute explicit amplitudes, discuss their soft limit and study the UV-behavior at one loop.

Spontaneously Broken Yang-Mills-Einstein Supergravities as Double Copies

Color/kinematics duality and the double-copy construction have proved to be systematic tools for gaining new insight into gravitational theories. Extending our earlier work, in this paper we introduce new double-copy constructions for large classes of spontaneously-broken Yang-Mills-Einstein theories with adjoint Higgs fields. One gauge-theory copy entering the construction is a spontaneously-broken (super-)Yang-Mills theory, while the other copy is a bosonic Yang-Mills-scalar theory with trilinear scalar interactions that display an explicitly-broken global symmetry. We show that the kinematic numerators of these gauge theories can be made to obey color/kinematics duality by exhibiting particular additional Lie-algebraic relations. We discuss in detail explicit examples with N=2 supersymmetry, focusing on Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravity theories belonging to the generic Jordan family in four and five dimensions, and identify the map between the supergravity and double-copy fields and parameters. We also briefly discuss the application of our results to N=4 supergravity theories. The constructions are illustrated by explicit examples of tree-level and one-loop scattering amplitudes.
