Droplet Minimizers of an Isoperimetric Problem with long-range interactions

We give a detailed description of the geometry of single droplet patterns in a nonlocal isoperimetric problem. In particular we focus on the sharp interface limit of the Ohta-Kawasaki free energy for diblock copolymers, regarded as a paradigm for those energies modeling physical systems characterized by a competition between short and a long-range interactions. Exploiting fine properties of the regularity theory for minimal surfaces, we extend previous partial results in different directions and give robust tools for the geometric analysis of more complex patterns.

Best constants for the isoperimetric inequality in quantitative form

We prove existence and regularity of minimizers for a class of functionals defined on Borel sets in $R^n$. Combining these results with a refinement of the selection principle introduced by the authors in arXiv:0911.0786, we describe a method suitable for the determination of the best constants in the quantitative isoperimetric inequality with higher order terms. Then, applying Bonnesen's annular symmetrization in a very elementary way, we show that, for $n=2$, the above-mentioned constants can be explicitly computed through a one-parameter family of convex sets known as ovals. This proves a further extension of a conjecture posed by Hall in J. Reine Angew. Math. 428 (1992).

A Selection Principle for the Sharp Quantitative Isoperimetric Inequality

We introduce a new variational method for the study of stability in the isoperimetric inequality. The method is quite general as it relies on a penalization technique combined with the regularity theory for quasiminimizers of the perimeter. Two applications are presented. First we give a new proof of the sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality in $R^n$. Second we positively answer to a conjecture by Hall concerning the best constant for the quantitative isoperimetric inequality in $R^2$ in the small asymmetry regime.

Asymptotic analysis of a second-order singular perturbation model for phase transitions

We consider the problem of the asymptotic description of a family of energies introduced by Coleman and Mizel in the theory of nonlinear second-order materials depending on an extra parameter k. By proving a new nonlinear interpolation inequality, we show that there exists a positive constant k_0 such that, for k<k_0, these energies Gamma-converge to a sharp interface functional. Moreover, for a special choice of the potential term in the energy, we provide an upper bound on the values of k such that minimizers cannot develop oscillations on some fine scale, thus improving previous estimates by Mizel, Peletier and Troy.

Convergence analysis of the Böl-Reese discrete model for rubber

In a recent work, Böl and Reese have introduced a discrete model for polymer networks by means of a finite element modeling. They have also provided a comparison with real experiments. A key parameter of their model is the size h of the finite element mesh, that is meant to be small in practice. The aim of the present work is to study the asymptotic behaviour (and the convergence of the finite element method) when the meshsize goes to zero. In particular, we address the properties satisfied by the model at the limit, depending on the properties of the mesh.
