Probing oscillations into sterile neutrinos with cosmology, astrophysics and experiments

We perform a thorough analysis of oscillation signals generated by one extra sterile neutrino, extending previous analyses done in simple limiting cases and including the effects of established oscillations among active neutrinos. We consider the following probes: solar, atmospheric, reactor and beam neutrinos, Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (helium-4, deuterium), Cosmic Microwave Background, Large Scale Structure, supernovae, neutrinos from other astrophysical sources. We find no evidence for a sterile neutrino in present data, identify the still allowed regions, and study which future experiments can best probe them: sub-MeV solar experiments, more precise studies of CMB or BBN, future supernova explosions, etc. We discuss how the LSND hint is strongly disfavoured by the constraints of (standard) cosmology.

Sterile Neutrinos in astrophysical and cosmological sauce

The study of sterile neutrinos has recently acquired a different flavor: being now excluded as the dominant solution for the solar or atmospheric conversions, sterile neutrinos, still attractive for many other reasons, have thus become even more elusive. The present relevant questions are: which subdominant role can they have? Where (and how) can they show up? Cosmology and supernovae turn out to be powerful tools to address these issues. With the most general mixing scenarios in mind, I present the analysis of many possible effects on BBN, CMB, LSS, and in SN physics due to sterile neutrinos. I discuss the computational techniques, present the state-of-the-art bounds, identify the still allowed regions and study some of the most promising future probes. I show how the region of the LSND sterile neutrino is excluded by the constraints of standard cosmology.

Signatures of Supernova Neutrino Oscillations into Extra Dimensions

We consider the mixing of muon and tau neutrinos with sterile fermion fields propagating in extra dimensions in the context of core collapse supernova physics, extending the analysis of the electron neutrino case done in a previous work. We show that the potentially dramatic modifications to the supernova evolution are prevented by a mechanism of feedback, so that no severe bounds on the parameters of the extra dimensions need to be imposed. Nevertheless, the supernova core evolution is significantly modified. We discuss the consequences on the delayed explosion mechanism and the compatibility with the SN1987A signal. Then, for the cases of both nu_{mu,tau} and nu_e mixing with bulk fermions, we analyse the distinctive features of the signal on Earth.

Neutrinos in Extra Dimensions and Supernovae

Models with extra space dimensions naturally provide for the existence of fermions that propagate in them. These are seen in 4D as an infinite tower of sterile neutrinos possibly mixed with the Standard Model ones. We consider the effect of such a mixing in the context of core collapse supernova physics. We show that the potentially dramatic modifications to the supernova evolution (commonly believed to set very strong bounds on the parameters of the extra dimensions) are prevented by a mechanism of feedback, so that much weaker bounds need to be imposed. Nevertheless, the supernova core evolution is significantly modified. We discuss the compatibility with the SN1987a signal and we analyse the distinctive signatures of the neutrino signal on Earth.

Muon g-2 in a Model with one Extra Dimension

The computation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment in the framework of a proposed extension of the Standard Model to 5 dimensions is presented. The result (a small correction with respect to the SM prediction) is briefly discussed.

Gluon fusion production of the Higgs boson in a Calculable Model with one Extra Dimension

In an extension of the Standard Model with one extra dimension and N=1 supersymmetry compactified on R^1/(Z_2 x Z'_2), we compute the Higgs boson decay width into two gluons, relevant to Higgs production in hadronic collisions. At one loop, the decay width is significantly suppressed with respect to the SM. For a compactification radius 1/R = 370 \pm 70 GeV and a Higgs mass m_H = 127 \pm 8 GeV, as expected in the case of a radiatively generated Fayet-Iliopoulos term, we find it to be less than 15% of the SM result.

Muon anomalous magnetic moment in a Calculable Model with one Extra Dimension

In the framework of a recently proposed extension of the Standard Model, with N=1 SuperSymmetry in 5 dimensions, compactified on R^1/(Z_2 x Z'_2), we compute the muon anomalous magnetic moment at one loop to order (M_W R)^2, where R is the compactification radius. We find the corrections to be small with respect to the SM pure weak contribution and not capable of explaining the present discrepancy between theory and experiment for any sensible value of R.
