Intelligent Omni-Surfaces (IOSs) for the MIMO Broadcast Channel

In this paper, we consider intelligent omni-surfaces (IOSs), which are capable of simultaneously reflecting and refracting electromagnetic waves. We focus our attention on the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel, and we introduce an algorithm for jointly optimizing the covariance matrix at the base station, the matrix of reflection and transmission coefficients at the IOS, and the amount of power that is reflected and refracted from the IOS. The distinguishable feature of this work lies in taking into account that the reflection and transmission coefficients of an IOS are tightly coupled. Simulation results are illustrated to show the convergence of the proposed algorithm and the benefits of using surfaces with simultaneous reflection and refraction capabilities.

A Novel RIS-Aided EMF Exposure Aware Approach using an Angularly Equalized Virtual Propagation Channel

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output systems with beamforming are key components of the 5th and the future 6th generation of networks. However, in some cases, where the BS serves the same user for a long period, and in some propagation conditions, such systems reduce their transmit power to avoid creating unwanted regions of electromagnetic field exposure exceeding the regulatory threshold, beyond the circle around the BS that limits the distance between people and the BS antenna. Such power reduction strongly degrades the received power at the target user. Recently, exposition aware beamforming schemes aided by self-tuning reconfigurable intelligent surfaces derived from maximum ratio transmission beamforming, have been proposed: truncated beamforming. However, such scheme is highly complex. In this paper, we propose a novel and low complexity reconfigurable intelligent surface aided beamforming scheme called Equalized beamforming, which applies maximum ratio transmission to an angularly equalized virtual propagation channel. Our simulations show that our proposed scheme outperforms the reduced beamforming scheme, whilst complying with the exposition regulation.

A Novel RIS-Aided EMF-Aware Beamforming Using Directional Spreading, Truncation and Boosting

This paper addresses a drawback of massive multiple-input multiple-output Maximum Ratio Transmission beamforming. In some propagation conditions, when the base station serves the same target user equipment for a long period, it reduces the transmit power (and degrades the received power) to avoid creating high exposure regions located in the vicinity of the antenna and concentrated in few directions (corresponding to the best propagation paths between the antenna and the receiver). In this paper, we propose a novel electromagnetic field aware beamforming scheme, which (i) spreads the beamforming radiation pattern in the angular domain by adding artificial propagation paths thanks to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, (ii) truncates the pattern in strong directions, and (iii) boosts it in weak directions. Compared to existing solutions, it maximizes the received power. However, it also consumes more power. Finally, truncation alone is the best trade-off between received power and energy efficiency, under exposure constrain.

Beamforming Optimization for Active Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided SWIPT

In this paper, we study an active IRS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, an active IRS is deployed to assist a multi-antenna access point (AP) to convey information and energy simultaneously to multiple single-antenna information users (IUs) and energy users (EUs). Two joint transmit and reflect beamforming optimization problems are investigated with different practical objectives. The first problem maximizes the weighted sum-power harvested by the EUs subject to individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the IUs, while the second problem maximizes the weighted sum-rate of the IUs subject to individual energy harvesting (EH) constraints at the EUs. The optimization problems are non-convex and difficult to solve optimally. To tackle these two problems, we first rigorously prove that dedicated energy beams are not required for their corresponding semidefinite relaxation (SDR) reformulations and the SDR is tight for the first problem, thus greatly simplifying the AP precoding design. Then, by capitalizing on the techniques of alternating optimization (AO), SDR, and successive convex approximation (SCA), computationally efficient algorithms are developed to obtain suboptimal solutions of the resulting optimization problems. Simulation results demonstrate that, given the same total system power budget, significant performance gains in terms of operating range of wireless power transfer (WPT), total harvested energy, as well as achievable rate can be obtained by our proposed designs over benchmark schemes (especially the one adopting a passive IRS). Moreover, it is advisable to deploy an active IRS in the proximity of the users for the effective operation of WPT/SWIPT.

Federated Spectrum Learning for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces-Aided Wireless Edge Networks

Increasing concerns on intelligent spectrum sensing call for efficient training and inference technologies. In this paper, we propose a novel federated learning (FL) framework, dubbed federated spectrum learning (FSL), which exploits the benefits of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and overcomes the unfavorable impact of deep fading channels. Distinguishingly, we endow conventional RISs with spectrum learning capabilities by leveraging a fully-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) model at each RIS controller, thereby helping the base station to cooperatively infer the users who request to participate in FL at the beginning of each training iteration. To fully exploit the potential of FL and RISs, we address three technical challenges: RISs phase shifts configuration, user-RIS association, and wireless bandwidth allocation. The resulting joint learning, wireless resource allocation, and user-RIS association design is formulated as an optimization problem whose objective is to maximize the system utility while considering the impact of FL prediction accuracy. In this context, the accuracy of FL prediction interplays with the performance of resource optimization. In particular, if the accuracy of the trained CNN model deteriorates, the performance of resource allocation worsens. The proposed FSL framework is tested by using real radio frequency (RF) traces and numerical results demonstrate its advantages in terms of spectrum prediction accuracy and system utility: a better CNN prediction accuracy and FL system utility can be achieved with a larger number of RISs and reflecting elements.

Digital Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: On the Impact of Realistic Reradiation Models

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology that is under investigation for different applications in wireless communications. RISs are often analyzed and optimized by considering simplified electromagnetic reradiation models. In this chapter, we aim to study the impact of realistic reradiation models for RISs as a function of the sub-wavelength inter-distance between nearby elements of the RIS, the quantization levels of the reflection coefficients, the interplay between the amplitude and phase of the reflection coefficients, and the presence of electromagnetic interference. We consider both case studies in which the users may be located in the far-field and near-field regions of an RIS. Our study shows that, due to design constraints, such as the need of using quantized reflection coefficients or the inherent interplay between the phase and the amplitude of the reflection coefficients, an RIS may reradiate power towards unwanted directions that depend on the intended and interfering electromagnetic waves. Therefore, it is in general important to optimize an RIS by considering the entire reradiation pattern by design to maximize the reradiated power towards the desired directions of reradiation while keeping the power reradiated towards other unwanted directions at a low level. Our study shows that a 2-bit digitally controllable RIS with an almost constant reflection amplitude as a function of the applied phase shift, and whose scattering elements have a size and an inter-distance between (1/8)th and (1/4)th of the signal wavelength may be a good tradeoff between performance, implementation complexity and cost. However, the presented results are preliminary and pave the way for further research into the performance of RISs based on accurate and realistic electromagnetic reradiation models.

The Road to Industry 4.0 and Beyond: A Communications-, Information-, and Operation Technology Collaboration Perspective

The fourth industrial revolution, i.e., Industry 4.0, is evolving all around the globe. In this article, we introduce the landscape of Industry 4.0 and beyond empowered by the seamless collaboration of communication technology (CT), information technology (IT), and operation technology (OT), i.e., CIOT collaboration. Specifically, CIOT collaboration is regarded as a main improvement of Industry 4.0 compared to the previous industrial revolutions. We commence by reviewing the previous three industrial revolutions and we argue that the key feature of Industry 4.0 is the CIOT collaboration. More particularly, CT domain supports ubiquitous connectivity of the industrial elements and further bridges the physical world and the cyber world, which is a pivotal prerequisite. Then, we present the potential impacts of CIOT collaboration on typical industrial use cases with the objective of creating a more intelligent and human-friendly industry. Furthermore, the technical challenges of paving the way for the CIOT collaboration with an emphasis on the CT domain are discussed. Finally, we shed light on a roadmap for Industry 4.0 and beyond. The salient steps to be taken in the future CIOT collaboration are highlighted, which may be expected to expedite the paradigm shift towards the next industrial revolution.

Bi-objective Optimization of Information Rate and Harvested Power in RIS-aided SWIPT Systems

The problem of simultaneously optimizing the information rate and the harvested power in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input single-output downlink wireless network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is addressed. The beamforming vectors, RIS reflection coefficients, and power split ratios are jointly optimized subject to maximum power constraints, minimum harvested power constraints, and realistic constraints on the RIS reflection coefficients. A practical algorithm is developed through an interplay of alternating optimization, sequential optimization, and pricing-based methods. Numerical results show that the deployment of RISs can significantly improve the information rate and the amount of harvested power.

A 3D Positioning-based Channel Estimation Method for RIS-aided mmWave Communications

A fundamental challenge in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is the susceptibility to blocking objects. One way to alleviate this problem is the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). Nevertheless, due to the large number of passive reflecting elements on RIS, channel estimation turns out to be a challenging task. In this paper, we address the channel estimation for RIS-aided mmWave communication systems based on a localization method. The proposed idea consists of exploiting the sparsity of the mmWave channel and the topology of the RIS. In particular, we first propose the concept of reflecting unit set (RUS) to improve the flexibility of RIS. We then propose a novel coplanar maximum likelihood-based (CML) 3D positioning method based on the RUS, and derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the positioning method. Furthermore, we develop an efficient positioning-based channel estimation scheme with low computational complexity. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, our proposed method requires less time-frequency resources in channel acquisition as the complexity is independent to the total size of the RIS but depends on the size of the RUSs, which is only a small portion of the RIS. Large performance gains are confirmed in simulations, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Power Control for Physical-Layer Broadcasting

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a recently introduced technology for future wireless com-munication systems, enhances the spectral and energy efficiency by intelligently adjusting the propaga-tion conditions between a base station (BS) and mobile equipments (MEs). An RIS consists of manylow-cost passive reflecting elements to improve the quality of the received signal. In this paper, westudy the problem of power control at the BS for the RIS aided physical-layer broadcasting. Our goalis to minimize the transmit power at the BS by jointly designing the transmit beamforming at the BSand the phase shifts of the passive elements at the RIS. Furthermore, to help validate the proposedoptimization methods, we derive lower bounds to quantify the average transmit power at the BS as afunction of the number of MEs, the number of RIS elements, and the number of antennas at the BS.The simulation results demonstrated that the average transmit power at the BS is close to the lowerbound in an RIS aided system, and is significantly lower than the average transmit power in conventionalschemes without the RIS.

In more detail, we extract a closed-form expression for the outage probability that quantifies the joint impact of turbulence and misalignment as well as the effect of transceivers' hardware imperfections. Our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling both turbulence and misalignment when assessing the performance of multi-RIS-empowered THz wireless systems.

Energy Efficiency Optimization of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Electromagnetic Field Exposure Constraints

This work considers the problem of energy efficiency maximization in a RIS-based communication link, subject to not only the conventional maximum power constraints, but also additional constraints on the maximum exposure to electromagnetic radiations of the end-users. The RIS phase shifts, the transmit beamforming, the linear receive filter, and the transmit power are jointly optimized, and two provably convergent and low-complexity algorithms are developed. One algorithm can be applied to the general system setups, but does not guarantee global optimality. The second algorithm is provably optimal in a notable special case. The numerical results show that RIS-based communications can ensure high energy efficiency while fulfilling users' exposure constraints to radio frequency emissions.

Outage performance analysis of RIS-assisted UAV wireless systems under disorientation and misalignment

In this paper, we analyze the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) wireless system that is affected by mixture-gamma small-scale fading, stochastic disorientation, and misalignment, as well as transceivers hardware imperfections. First, we statistically characterize the end-to-end channel for both cases, i.e., in the absence as well as in the presence of disorientation and misalignment, by extracting closed-form formulas for the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative distribution function (CDF). Building on the aforementioned expressions, we extract novel closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) in the absence and the presence of disorientation and misalignment as well as hardware imperfections. In addition, high signal-to-noise ratio OP approximations are derived, leading to the extraction of the diversity order. Finally, an OP floor due to disorientation and misalignment is presented.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Outdated Channel State Information: Centralized vs. Distributed Deployments

In this paper, we investigate the performance of an RIS-aided wireless communication system subject to outdated channel state information that may operate in both the near- and far-field regions. In particular, we take two RIS deployment strategies into consideration: (i) the centralized deployment, where all the reflecting elements are installed on a single RIS and (ii) the distributed deployment, where the same number of reflecting elements are placed on multiple RISs. For both deployment strategies, we derive accurate closed-form approximations for the ergodic capacity, and we introduce tight upper and lower bounds for the ergodic capacity to obtain useful design insights. From this analysis, we unveil that an increase of the transmit power, the Rician-K factor, the accuracy of the channel state information and the number of reflecting elements help improve the system performance. Moreover, we prove that the centralized RIS-aided deployment may achieve a higher ergodic capacity as compared with the distributed RIS-aided deployment when the RIS is located near the base station or near the user. In different setups, on the other hand, we prove that the distributed deployment outperforms the centralized deployment. Finally, the analytical results are verified by using Monte Carlo simulations.

MARISA: A Self-configuring Metasurfaces Absorption and Reflection Solution Towards 6G

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are considered one of the key disruptive technologies towards future 6G networks. RISs revolutionize the traditional wireless communication paradigm by controlling the wave propagation properties of the impinging signals as required. A major roadblock for RIS is though the need for a fast and complex control channel to continuously adapt to the ever-changing wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we ask ourselves the question: Would it be feasible to remove the need for control channels for RISs? We analyze the feasibility of devising Self-Configuring Smart Surfaces that can be easily and seamlessly installed throughout the environment, following the new Internet-of-Surfaces (IoS) paradigm, without requiring modifications of the deployed mobile network. To this aim, we design MARISA, a self-configuring metasurfaces absorption and reflection solution, and show that it can achieve a better-than-expected performance rivaling with control channel-driven RISs.

Joint Activity and Blind Information Detection for UAV-Assisted Massive IoT Access

Grant-free non-coherent index-modulation (NC-IM) has been recently considered as an efficient massive access scheme for enabling cost- and energy-limited Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices that transmit small data packets. This paper investigates the grant-free NC-IM scheme combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for applicant to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based massive IoT access. Specifically, each device is assigned a unique non-orthogonal signature sequence codebook. Each active device transmits one of its signature sequences in the given time-frequency resources, by modulating the information in the index of the transmitted signature sequence. For small-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) deployed at the UAV-based aerial base station (BS), by jointly exploiting the space-time-frequency domain device activity, we propose a computationally efficient space-time-frequency joint activity and blind information detection (JABID) algorithm with significantly improved detection performance. Furthermore, for large-scale MIMO deployed at the aerial BS, by leveraging the sparsity of the virtual angular-domain channels, we propose an angular-domain based JABID algorithm for improving the system performance with reduced access latency. In addition, for the case of high mobility IoT devices and/or UAVs, we introduce a time-frequency spread transmission (TFST) strategy for the proposed JABID algorithms to combat doubly-selective fading channels. Finally, extensive simulation results are illustrated to verify the superiority of the proposed algorithms and the TFST strategy over known state-of-the-art algorithms.

Analysis of the Delay Distribution in Cellular Networks by Using Stochastic Geometry

In this paper, with the aid of the mathematical tool of stochastic geometry, we introduce analytical and computational frameworks for the distribution of three different definitions of delay, i.e., the time that it takes for a user to successfully receive a data packet, in large-scale cellular networks. We also provide an asymptotic analysis of one of the delay distributions, which can be regarded as the packet loss probability of a given network. To mitigate the inherent computational difficulties of the obtained analytical formulations in some cases, we propose efficient numerical approximations based on the numerical inversion method, the Riemann sum, and the Beta distribution. Finally, we demonstrate the accuracy of the obtained analytical formulations and the corresponding approximations against Monte Carlo simulation results, and unveil insights on the delay performance with respect to several design parameters, such as the decoding threshold, the transmit power, and the deployment density of the base stations. The proposed methods can facilitate the analysis and optimization of cellular networks subject to reliability constraints on the network packet delay that are not restricted to the local (average) delay, e.g., in the context of delay sensitive applications.

Cascaded Composite Turbulence and Misalignment: Statistical Characterization and Applications to Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Empowered Wireless Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) empowered high-frequency (HF) wireless systems are expected to become the supporting pillar for several reliability and data rate hungry applications. Such systems are, however, sensitive to misalignment and atmospheric phenomena including turbulence. Most of the existing studies on the performance assessment of RIS-empowered wireless systems ignore the impact of the aforementioned phenomena. Motivated by this, the current contribution presents a theoretical framework for analyzing the performance of multi-RIS empowered HF wireless systems. More specifically, we statistically characterize the cascaded composite turbulence and misalignment channels in terms of probability density and cumulative distribution functions. Building upon the derived analytical expressions, we present novel closed-form formulas that quantify the joint impact of turbulence and misalignment on the outage performance for two scenarios of high interest namely cascaded multi-RIS-empowered free space optics (FSO) and terahertz (THz) wireless systems. In addition, we provide an insightful outage probability upper-bound for a third scenario that considers parallel multi-RIS-empowered FSO systems. Our results highlight the importance of accurately modeling both turbulence and misalignment when assessing the performance of such systems.
