Spectrum of a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We obtain the next-to-leading order correction to the spectrum of a SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and we show agreement well-below 1% with respect to the lattice computations for the ground state and one of the higher states.

Confinement in a three-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We show that, starting from known exact classical solutions of the Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions, the string tension is obtained and the potential is consistent with a marginally confining theory. The potential we obtain agrees fairly well with preceding findings in literature but here we derive it analytically from the theory without further assumptions. The string tension is in strict agreement with lattice results and the well-known theoretical result by Karabali-Kim-Nair analysis. Classical solutions depend on a dimensionless numerical factor arising from integration. This factor enters into the determination of the spectrum and has been arbitrarily introduced in some theoretical models. We derive it directly from the solutions of the theory and is now fully justified. The agreement obtained with the lattice results for the ground state of the theory is well below 1% at any value of the degree of the group.

Exact solutions for classical Yang-Mills fields

We provide a set of exact solutions of the classical Yang-Mills equations. They have the property to satisfy a massive dispersion relation and hold in all gauges. These solutions can be used to describe the vacuum of the quantum Yang-Mills theory and so, they provide a general framework to build a quantum field theory. The components of the field become separated on a generic gauge but are all equal just in the Lorenz (Landau) gauge.

Quantum Yang-Mills field theory

We show that the Dyson-Schwinger set of equations for the Yang-Mills theory can be exactly solved till the two-point function. This is obtained given a set of nonlinear waves solving the classical equations of motion. Translation invariance is maintained by the proper choice of the solution of the equation for the two-point function as devised by Coleman. The computation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations is performed in the same way as devised by Bender, Milton and Savage providing a set of partial differential equations whose proof of existence of the solutions is standard. So, the correlation functions of the theory could be proved to exist and the two-point function manifests a mass gap.

Correction to Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model from QCD at the next-to-leading order

We evaluate the next-to-leading order correction to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model starting from quantum chromodynamics. We show that a systematic expansion exists, starting from a given set of exact classical solutions, so that higher order corrections could in principle be computed at any order. In this way, we are able to fix the constants of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model from quantum chromodynamics and analyze the behavior of strong interactions at low energies. The technique is to expand in powers of currents of the generating functional. We apply it to a simple Yukawa model with self-interaction showing how this has a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and its higher order corrections as a low-energy limit. The same is shown to happen for quantum chromodynamics in the chiral limit with two quarks. We prove stability of the NJL model so obtained. Then, we prove that the correction term we obtained does not change the critical temperature of the chiral transition of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at zero chemical potential.

Multitask Protein Function Prediction Through Task Dissimilarity

Automated protein function prediction is a challenging problem with distinctive features, such as the hierarchical organization of protein functions and the scarcity of annotated proteins for most biological functions. We propose a multitask learning algorithm addressing both issues. Unlike standard multitask algorithms, which use task (protein functions) similarity information as a bias to speed up learning, we show that dissimilarity information enforces separation of rare class labels from frequent class labels, and for this reason is better suited for solving unbalanced protein function prediction problems. We support our claim by showing that a multitask extension of the label propagation algorithm empirically works best when the task relatedness information is represented using a dissimilarity matrix as opposed to a similarity matrix. Moreover, the experimental comparison carried out on three model organism shows that our method has a more stable performance in both "protein-centric" and "function-centric" evaluation settings.

Einstein-Maxwell equations for asymmetric resonant cavities

We analyze the behavior of electromagnetic fields inside a resonant cavity by solving Einstein--Maxwell field equations. It is shown that the modified geometry of space-time inside the cavity due to a propagating mode can affect the propagation of a laser beam. It is seen that components of laser light with a shifted frequency appear originating from the coupling between the laser field and the mode cavity due to gravity. The analysis is extended to the case of an asymmetric resonant cavity taken to be a truncated cone. It is shown that a proper choice of the geometrical parameters of the cavity and dielectric can make the gravitational effects significant for an interferometric setup. This could make possible to realize table-top experiments involving gravitational effects.

Finite temperature corrections to a NLO Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We derive the next-to-leading order correction to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model starting from quantum chromodynamics. So, we are able to fix the constants of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model from quantum chromodynamics and analyze the behavior of strong interactions at low energies. The technique is to expand in powers of currents the generating functional. We apply it to a simple Yukawa model with self-interaction showing how this has a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and its higher order corrections as a low-energy limit. The same is shown to happen for quantum chromodynamics in the chiral limit with two quarks. We prove that a consistent thermodynamic behaviour is obtained as expected for the given parameters.

A theorem on the Higgs sector of the Standard Model

We provide the solution of the classical theory for the Higgs sector of the Standard Model obtaining the exact Green function for the broken phase. Solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the Higgs field we show that the propagator coincides with that of the classical theory confirming the spectrum also at the quantum level. In this way we obtain a proof of triviality using the Källen-Lehman representation. This has as a consequence that higher excited states must exist for the Higgs particle, representing an internal spectrum for it. Higher excited states have exponentially smaller amplitudes and so, their production rates are significantly depressed.

Running mass of the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge

Gluon propagator in the infrared limit, computed in the Landau gauge, can be cast into an universal form with a running mass for the gluon. In this way we are able to show that all the proposals appeared so far in literature are equivalent and describe the same physics. In this way, it appears essential to reach a general agreement about the interpretation of such results. We discuss the points that make difficult to agree on a similar view about this.

Numerical proof of existence of fractional powers of Wiener processes

Using the Euler--Maruyama technique, we show that a class of Wiener processes exist that are obtained by computing an arbitrary positive power of them. This can be accomplished with a proper set of definitions that makes meaningful the realization at discrete times of these processes and make them computable. Standard results from Itō calculus for integer powers hold as we are just extending them. We provide the results from a Monte Carlo simulation with a large number of samples. We yield evidence for the existence of these processes by recovering from them the standard Brownian motion we started with after power elevation. The perfect coincidence of the numerical results we obtained is a clear evidence of existence of these processes. This could pave the way to a generalization of the concepts of stochastic integral and relative process.

Analysis of $ρ$ condensation in a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

A non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model can be derived from QCD in the low-energy limit. In this way, it is possible to fix all the free parameters of the model with physical ones. We used this approach to derive a local limit to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, with the parameters those obtained from QCD, in order to fix the physical parameters of $ρ$ condensation and obtain the critical magnetic field. $ρ$ condensation is a consequence of the highly non-trivial behavior of the QCD vacuum in presence of a very strong magnetic field giving rising to superconductive behavior in quark matter. We extend previous computations by including finite temperature terms.

Ground state of Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions

Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions showed to be a research area yielding firm results in theoretical physics when compared to lattice computations. Recent analysis displayed astonishing agreement for the value of the string tension and excellent comparison for the spectrum. This successful approach can be put at test with a different theoretical framework that we devised in our preceding work for the scalar field theory in the strong coupling limit. The confirmations we get are really striking supporting it in full. As a by-product we are also able to show how AdS/CFT approach, with a description using flux tubes, is supported exactly as expected in the Isgur-Paton model with a dimensionless correction factor for the ground state of the theory already determined in lattice computations.

Mass gap in a Yang-Mills theory in the strong coupling limit

We prove that in the limit of the coupling going to infinity a Yang-Mills theory is equivalent to a $λϕ^4$ theory with the dynamics ruled just by a homogeneous equation. This gives explicitly the Green function and the mass spectrum proving that such gauge theories are confining. The scalar glueball spectrum is then proven to be in fair agreement with lattice QCD computations but giving a different ground state coinciding with the $f_0(600)$ light unflavored meson.

Scalar field theory in the strong self-interaction limit

Standard Model with a classical conformal invariance holds the promise to give a better understanding of the hierarchy problem and could pave the way for beyond the standard model physics. So, we give here a mathematical treatment of a massless quartic scalar field theory with a strong self-coupling both classically and for quantum field theory. We use a set of classical solutions recently found and show that there exists an infinite set of infrared trivial scalar theories with a mass gap. Free particles have superimposed a harmonic oscillator set of states. The classical solution is displayed through a current expansion and the next-to-leading order quantum correction is provided. Application to the Standard Model would entail the existence of higher excited states of the Higgs particle and reduced decay rates to WW and ZZ that could be already measured.

Numerical study of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the Wess-Zumino model

Supersymmetric models, in most cases, suffer from the lack of non-perturbative techniques. Recently, an approach based on Dyson-Schwinger equations has been proposed for the massless Wess-Zumino model. In this case, the equations for the self-energies of the fields were solved with the strong ansatz to take them all equal. We show, by numerically solving the equations, that this is a too strong choice as also solutions with all different self-energies are acceptable and more generic. This could have interesting implications for supersymmetry breaking.

Exact solutions and zero modes in scalar field theory

We provide a set of exact solutions in field theory of scalar fields with $Z_2$ symmetry that involve Jacobi elliptic functions. These solutions have the interesting property to provide massive waves even if one starts from a massless equation. We analyze them classically providing also exact solutions to the corresponding equations for the Green functions needed to completely solve them in a strong coupling limit. This is accomplished using a functional expansion into powers of the current. It is shown that the spontaneous breaking of the $Z_2$ symmetry is due to the existence of a zero mode that persists also in the case of the Higgs mechanism. In this latter case, the zero mode seems to play a role similar to the Goldstone boson in the breaking of a continuous symmetry and so, it should be important at lower momenta as a long range excitation.

$ρ$ condensation and physical parameters

Recently we showed how a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model comes out from QCD in the low-energy limit. In this way, it is possible to fix all the free parameters of the model with physical ones. We use this approach to derive a local limit to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the parameters those obtained from QCD in order to fix the physical parameters of $ρ$ condensation. $ρ$ condensation is a consequence of the highly non-trivial behavior of the QCD vacuum in presence a very strong magnetic field giving rising to superconductive behavior in quark matter. Determination of the proper parameters for this state can be an important helpful guide to identify it experimentally.
