Proof of triviality of $λϕ^4$ theory

We show that a recent analysis in the strong coupling limit of the $λϕ^4$ theory proves that this theory is indeed trivial giving in this limit the expansion of a free quantum field theory. We can get in this way the propagator with the renormalization constant and the renormalized mass. As expected the theory in this limit has the same spectrum as a harmonic oscillator. Some comments about triviality of the Yang-Mills theory in the infrared are also given.

Infrared analysis of quantum field theories

We show that for a $λϕ^4$ theory having many components, the solution with all equal components in the infrared regime is stable with respect to our expansion given by a recently devised approach to analyze strongly coupled quantum field theory. The analysis is extended to a pure Yang-Mills theory showing how, in this case, the given asymptotic series exists. In this way, many components theories in the infrared regime can be mapped to a single component scalar field theory obtaining their spectrum.

Thermodynamic Limit and Decoherence: Rigorous Results

Time evolution operator in quantum mechanics can be changed into a statistical operator by a Wick rotation. This strict relation between statistical mechanics and quantum evolution can reveal deep results when the thermodynamic limit is considered. These results translate in a set of theorems proving that these effects can be effectively at work producing an emerging classical world without recurring to any external entity that in some cases cannot be properly defined. In a many-body system has been recently shown that Gaussian decay of the coherence is the rule with a duration of recurrence more and more small as the number of particles increases. This effect has been observed experimentally. More generally, a theorem about coherence of bulk matter can be proved. All this takes us to the conclusion that a well definite boundary for the quantum to classical world does exist and that can be drawn by the thermodynamic limit, extending in this way the deep link between statistical mechanics and quantum evolution to a high degree.

Dual perturbation expansion for a classical $λϕ^4$ field theory

We prove the existence of a strong coupling expansion for a classical $λϕ^4$ field theory in agreement with the duality principle in perturbation theory put forward in [M.Frasca, Phys. Rev. A 58, 3439 (1998)]. The leading order solution is a snoidal wave taking the place of plane waves of the free theory. We compute the first order correction and show that higher order terms do renormalize the leading order solution.

Strong coupling expansion for general relativity

Strong coupling expansion is computed for the Einstein equations in vacuum in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. The series is given by the duality principle in perturbation theory as presented in [M.Frasca, Phys. Rev. A 58, 3439 (1998)]. An example of application is also given for a two-dimensional model of gravity expressed through the Liouville equation showing that the expansion is not trivial and consistent with the exact solution, in agreement with the general analysis. Application to the Einstein equations in vacuum in the ADM formalism shows that the spacetime near singularities is driven by space homogeneous equations.

Coherence properties of bulk matter

We prove a theorem, using the density functional approach and relying on a classical result by Lieb and Simon on Thomas-Fermi model, showing that in the thermodynamic limit bulk matter is at most semiclassical and coherence preserving. The connection between quantum fluid dynamics and density functional theory in the formulation due to Kohn and Sham play a significant role leading to a Vlasov-Poisson system of equations for the Wigner function. Coherence stability is achieved by noting that small oscillations in bulk matter are damped by Landau damping. In some conditions the initial Wigner function could generate an opposite effect and coherence stability can be lost involving higher order quantum effects for a macroscopic body.

Strongly coupled quantum field theory

We analyze numerically a two-dimensional $λϕ^4$ theory showing that in the limit of a strong coupling $λ\to\infty$ just the homogeneous solutions for time evolution are relevant in agreement with the duality principle in perturbation theory as presented in [M.Frasca, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 58}, 3439 (1998)], being negligible the contribution of the spatial varying parts of the dynamical equations. A consequence is that the Green function method works for this non-linear problem in the large coupling limit as in a linear theory. A numerical proof is given for this. With these results at hand, we built a strongly coupled quantum field theory for a $λϕ^4$ interacting field computing the first order correction to the generating functional. Mass spectrum of the theory is obtained turning out to be that of a harmonic oscillator with no dependence on the dimensionality of spacetime. The agreement with the Lehmann-Källen representation of the perturbation series is then shown at the first order.

Efficient Plasma Heating by Radiofrequency

We propose an efficient mechanism to heat a plasma by an intense microwave field solving the equation of ion motion in a wave field and a constant magnetic field in a large coupling regime. The mechanism does not relies explicitly on stochastic motion and is able to increase the ion velocity by several magnitude orders. Known thresholds for the onset of stochastic motion are also obtained.

A Quantum Many-Body Instability in the Thermodynamic Limit

Intrinsic decoherence in the thermodynamic limit is shown for a large class of many-body quantum systems in the unitary evolution in NMR and cavity QED. The effect largely depends on the inability of the system to recover the phases. Gaussian decaying in time of the fidelity is proved for spin systems and radiation-matter interaction.

Existence of a Semiclassical Approximation in Loop Quantum Gravity

We consider a spherical symmetric black hole in the Schwarzschild metric and apply Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization to determine the energy levels. The canonical partition function is then computed and we show that the entropy coincides with the Bekenstein-Hawking formula when the maximal number of states for the black hole is the same as computed in loop quantum gravity, proving in this case the existence of a semiclassical limit and obtaining an independent derivation of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter.

Cooperative effects in Josephson junctions in a cavity in the strong coupling regime

We analyze the behavior of systems of two and three qubits made by Josephson junctions, treated in the two level approximation, driven by a radiation mode in a cavity. The regime we consider is a strong coupling one recently experimentally reached for a single junction. Rabi oscillations are obtained with the frequency proportional to integer order Bessel functions in the limit of a large photon number, similarly to the case of the single qubit. A selection rule is derived for the appearance of Rabi oscillations. A quantum amplifier built with a large number of Josephson junctions in a cavity in the strong coupling regime is also described.

Third order correction to localization in a two-level driven system

A general result is presented on the lack of second order corrections and on the form of the leading order Floquet quasi-energies in the high-frequency approximation for a two-level driven system. Then, by a perturbative approach in the high-frequency approximation that uses dual Dyson series and renormalization group techniques [M. Frasca, Phys. Rev. B 68, 165315 (2003)], we obtain a third order correction for a sinusoidal driving field that is the same obtained by Barata and Wreszinski [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2112 (2000)], confirming their result that localization deviates from the zeros of the zero-th order Bessel function when higher order terms are taken into account. Three different expressions for this correction are compared. An important consequence of this result is that gives complete support to the correctness of both methods. Finally, the limitation of high-frequency approximations is presented by comparison with numerical results for a sinusoidal driving field.

1/N-expansion for the Dicke model and the decoherence program

An analysis of the Dicke model, N two-level atoms interacting with a single radiation mode, is done using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. The main aim of the paper is to show that, changing the quantization axis with respect to the common usage, it is possible to prove a general result either for N or the coupling constant going to infinity for the exact solution of the model. This completes the analysis, known in the current literature, with respect to the same model in the limit of N and volume going to infinity, keeping the density constant. For the latter the proper axis of quantization is given by the Hamiltonian of the two-level atoms and for the former the proper axis of quantization is defined by the interaction. The relevance of this result relies on the observation that a general measurement apparatus acts using electromagnetic interaction and so, one can states that the thermodynamic limit is enough to grant the appearance of classical effects. Indeed, recent experimental results give first evidence that superposition states disappear interacting with an electromagnetic field having a large number of photons.

Fully polarized states and decoherence

The aim of this review is to show how ``ferromagnetic'' states, that is, states having a fully polarization, can produce intrinsic decoherence by unitary evolution. This effect can give an understanding of recent experiments on mesoscopic devices as quantum point contacts showing the 0.7 conductance anomaly and the wide number of data about saturation of dephasing time observed at very low temperatures, as a fully polarized two dimensional electron gas. But similar effects can be seen in different area of physics as for example the Dicke model describing the interaction of two-level systems with a radiation mode. In this case one can show that decoherence is intrinsic and remove a Schrödinger cat state leaving a single coherent state, collapsing the wave function in the thermodynamic limit. So, saturation of dephasing time at low temperatures in mesoscopic devices can be understood by a fully polarized two dimensional electron gas that, by an exchange model, can be reduced to a generalized form of the Dicke Hamiltonian and where the quasiparticles are spin excitations interacting with magnons. In this way, one can see that several experiments on nanowires and quantum dots can be satisfactorily explained. The existence of intrinsic decoherence in the thermodynamic limit could have deep implications in fundamental problems like quantum measurement and irreversibility. Recent experiments with cavities with a large number of photons and with nuclear magnetic resonance in organic molecular crystals give a first strong support to this view.

Stern-Gerlach Experiment and Bohm Limit

Stern-Gerlach experiment is a paradigm of measurement theory in quantum mechanics. Notwithstanding several analysis given in literature, no clear understanding of the apparent collapse has been given so far. Indeed, one can imagine a Stern-Gerlach device where all environmental effects are removed and ask the question on how the measurement goes on. In this letter we will prove that a the Stern-Gerlach device behaves as a true measurement apparatus, as expected by the Copenaghen interpretation, by the Ehrenfest theorem. In this way we recover, by other means, a limit on the Stern-Gerlach device, given by Bohm, based on scrambling of phases due to a large oscillation frequency.

Dynamical decoherence in a cavity with a large number of two-level atoms

We consider a large number of two-level atoms interacting with the mode of a cavity in the rotating-wave approximation (Tavis-Cummings model). We apply the Holstein-Primakoff transformation to study the model in the limit of the number of two-level atoms, all in their ground state, becoming very large. The unitary evolution that we obtain in this approximation is applied to a macroscopic superposition state showing that, when the coherent states forming the superposition are enough distant, then the state collapses on a single coherent state describing a classical radiation mode. This appear as a true dynamical effect that could be observed in experiments with cavities.

Saturation of dephasing time in mesoscopic devices produced by a ferromagnetic state

We consider an exchange model of itinerant electrons in a Heisenberg ferromagnet and we assume that the ferromagnet is in a fully polarized state. Using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation we are able to obtain a boson-fermion Hamiltonian that is well-known in the interaction between light and matter. This model describes the spontaneous emission in two-level atoms that is the proper decoherence mechanism when the number of modes of the radiation field is taken increasingly large, the vacuum acting as a reservoir. In the same way one can see that the interaction between the bosonic modes of spin waves and an itinerant electron produces decoherence by spin flipping with a rate proportional to the size of the system. In this way we are able to show that the experiments on quantum dots, described in D. K. Ferry et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 4687 (1999)], and nanowires, described in D. Natelson et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 86}, 1821 (2001)], can be understood as the interaction of itinerant electrons and an electron gas in a fully polarized state.

Perturbative results on localization for a driven two-level system

Using perturbation theory in the strong coupling regime, that is, the dual Dyson series, and renormalization group techniques to re-sum secular terms, we obtain the perturbation series of the two-level system driven by a sinusoidal field till second order. The third order correction to the energy levels is obtained proving how this correction does not modify at all the localization condition for a strong field as arising from the zeros of the zero-th Bessel function of integer order. A comparison with weak coupling perturbation theory is done showing how the latter is contained in the strong coupling expansion in the proper limits. This computation gives an explicit analytical form to Floquet eigenstates and quasi-energies for this problem, supporting recent theoretical and experimental findings for quantum devices expected to give a representation for qubits in quantum computation.
