Symplectic double groupoids and the generalized Kähler potential

A description of the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying generalized Kähler geometry, which separates its holomorphic moduli from its compatible Riemannian metric in a similar way to the Kähler case, has been sought since its discovery in 1984. In this paper, we describe a full solution to this problem for arbitrary generalized Kähler manifolds. We discover that the holomorphic structure underlying a generalized Kähler manifold is a holomorphic symplectic Morita double bimodule between double symplectic groupoids, and that each compatible Riemannian metric is given by a Lagrangian submanifold forming a bisection of the real symplectic core of this double bimodule. In other words, a generalized Kähler manifold has an associated holomorphic symplectic manifold of quadruple dimension and equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution; the generalized Kähler metric is then determined by the choice of a Lagrangian submanifold of the fixed point locus of this involution. This resolves affirmatively a long-standing conjecture by physicists concerning the existence of a generalized Kähler potential. We demonstrate the theory by constructing explicitly the above Morita double bimodule and Lagrangian bisection for the well-known generalized Kähler structures on compact even-dimensional semisimple Lie groups, which have until now escaped such analysis. We construct the required holomorphic symplectic manifolds by expressing them as moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces with Lagrangian boundary conditions, through a quasi-Hamiltonian reduction.

Brane quantization of toric Poisson varieties

In this paper we propose a noncommutative generalization of the relationship between compact Kähler manifolds and complex projective algebraic varieties. Beginning with a prequantized Kähler structure, we use a holomorphic Poisson tensor to deform the underlying complex structure into a generalized complex structure, such that the prequantum line bundle and its tensor powers deform to a sequence of generalized complex branes. Taking homomorphisms between the resulting branes, we obtain a noncommutative deformation of the homogeneous coordinate ring. As a proof of concept, this is implemented for all compact toric Kähler manifolds equipped with an R-matrix holomorphic Poisson structure, resulting in what could be called noncommutative toric varieties. To define the homomorphisms between generalized complex branes, we propose a method which involves lifting each pair of generalized complex branes to a single coisotropic A-brane in the real symplectic groupoid of the underlying Poisson structure, and compute morphisms in the A-model between the Lagrangian identity bisection and the lifted coisotropic brane. This is done with the use of a multiplicative holomorphic Lagrangian polarization of the groupoid.

Generalized Kähler metrics from Hamiltonian deformations

We give a new characterization of generalized Kähler structures in terms of their corresponding complex Dirac structures. We then give an alternative proof of Hitchin's partial unobstructedness for holomorphic Poisson structures. Our main application is to show that there is a corresponding unobstructedness result for arbitrary generalized Kähler structures. That is, we show that any generalized Kähler structure may be deformed in such a way that one of its underlying holomorphic Poisson structures remains fixed, while the other deforms via Hitchin's deformation. Finally, we indicate a close relationship between this deformation and the notion of a Hamiltonian family of Poisson structures.

Morita equivalence and the generalized Kähler potential

We solve the problem of determining the fundamental degrees of freedom underlying a generalized Kähler structure of symplectic type. For a usual Kähler structure, it is well-known that the geometry is determined by a complex structure, a Kähler class, and the choice of a positive $(1,1)$-form in this class, which depends locally on only a single real-valued function: the Kähler potential. Such a description for generalized Kähler geometry has been sought since it was discovered in 1984. We show that a generalized Kähler structure of symplectic type is determined by a pair of holomorphic Poisson manifolds, a holomorphic symplectic Morita equivalence between them, and the choice of a positive Lagrangian brane bisection, which depends locally on only a single real-valued function, which we call the generalized Kähler potential. Our solution draws upon, and specializes to, the many results in the physics literature which solve the problem under the assumption (which we do not make) that the Poisson structures involved have constant rank. To solve the problem we make use of, and generalize, two main tools: the first is the notion of symplectic Morita equivalence, developed by Weinstein and Xu to study Poisson manifolds; the second is Donaldson's interpretation of a Kähler metric as a real Lagrangian submanifold in a deformation of the holomorphic cotangent bundle.

Log Picard algebroids and meromorphic line bundles

We introduce logarithmic Picard algebroids, a natural class of Lie algebroids adapted to a simple normal crossings divisor on a smooth projective variety. We show that such algebroids are classified by a subspace of the de Rham cohomology of the divisor complement determined by its mixed Hodge structure. We then solve the prequantization problem, showing that under the appropriate integrality condition, a log Picard algebroid is the Lie algebroid of symmetries of what is called a meromorphic line bundle, a generalization of the usual notion of line bundle in which the fibres degenerate along the divisor. We give a geometric description of such bundles and establish a classification theorem for them, showing that they correspond to a subgroup of the holomorphic line bundles on the divisor complement. Importantly, these holomorphic line bundles need not be algebraic. Finally, we provide concrete methods for explicitly constructing examples of meromorphic line bundles, such as for a smooth cubic divisor in the projective plane.

The tropical momentum map: a classification of toric log symplectic manifolds

We give a generalization of toric symplectic geometry to Poisson manifolds which are symplectic away from a collection of hypersurfaces forming a normal crossing configuration. We introduce the tropical momentum map, which takes values in a generalization of affine space called a log affine manifold. Using this momentum map, we obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in terms of decorated log affine polytopes, hence extending the classification of symplectic toric manifolds achieved by Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg, Kostant, and Delzant.

Integration of generalized complex structures

We solve the integration problem for generalized complex manifolds, obtaining as the natural integrating object a weakly holomorphic symplectic groupoid, which is a real symplectic groupoid with a compatible complex structure defined only on the associated stack, i.e., only up to Morita equivalence. We explain how such objects differentiate to give generalized complex manifolds, and we show that a generalized complex manifold is integrable in this sense if and only if its underlying real Poisson structure is integrable. Crucial to our solution are several new technical tools which are of independent interest, namely, a reduction procedure for Lie groupoid actions on Courant algebroids, as well as certain local-to-global extension results for multiplicative forms on local Lie groupoids. Finally, we implement our generalized complex integration procedure in several concrete examples.

Type one generalized Calabi--Yaus

We study type one generalized complex and generalized Calabi--Yau manifolds. We introduce a cohomology class that obstructs the existence of a globally defined, closed 2-form which agrees with the symplectic form on the leaves of the generalized complex structure, the twisting class. We prove that in a compact, type one, 4n-dimensional generalized complex manifold the Euler characteristic must be even and equal to the signature modulo four. The generalized Calabi--Yau condition places much stronger constrains: a compact type one generalized Calabi--Yau fibers over the 2-torus and if the structure has one compact leaf, then this fibration can be chosen to be the fibration by the symplectic leaves of the generalized complex structure. If the twisting class vanishes, one can always deform the structure so that it has a compact leaf. Finally we prove that every symplectic fibration over the 2-torus admits a type one generalized Calabi--Yau structure.

Local analytic geometry of generalized complex structures

A generalized complex manifold is locally gauge-equivalent to the product of a holomorphic Poisson manifold with a real symplectic manifold, but in possibly many different ways. In this paper we show that the isomorphism class of the holomorphic Poisson structure occurring in this local model is independent of the choice of gauge equivalence, and is hence the unique local invariant of generalized complex manifolds. We use this result to prove that the complex locus of a generalized complex manifold naturally inherits the structure of a complex analytic space.

Dirac Geometry of the Holonomy Fibration

In this paper, we solve the problem of giving a gauge-theoretic description of the natural Dirac structure on a Lie Group which plays a prominent role in the theory of D- branes for the Wess-Zumino-Witten model as well as the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian spaces. We describe the structure as an infinite-dimensional reduction of the space of connections over the circle. Our insight is that the formal Poisson structure on the space of connections is not an actual Poisson structure, but is itself a Dirac structure, due to the fact that it is defined by an unbounded operator. We also develop general tools for reducing Courant algebroids and morphisms between them, allowing us to give a precise correspondence between Hamiltonian loop group spaces and quasi- Hamiltonian spaces.

Stable generalized complex structures

A stable generalized complex structure is one that is generically symplectic but degenerates along a real codimension two submanifold, where it defines a generalized Calabi-Yau structure. We introduce a Lie algebroid which allows us to view such structures as symplectic forms. This allows us to construct new examples of stable structures, and also to define period maps for their deformations in which the background three-form flux is either fixed or not, proving the unobstructedness of both deformation problems. We then use the same tools to establish local normal forms for the degeneracy locus and for Lagrangian branes. Applying our normal forms to the four-dimensional case, we prove that any compact stable generalized complex 4-manifold has a symplectic completion, in the sense that it can be modified near its degeneracy locus to produce a compact symplectic 4-manifold.

Generalized Kaehler geometry of instanton moduli spaces

We prove that Hitchin's generalized Kaehler structure on the moduli space of instantons over a compact, even generalized Kaehler four-manifold may be obtained by generalized Kaehler reduction, in analogy with the usual Kaehler case. The underlying reduction of Courant algebroids is a realization of Donaldson's $μ$-map in degree three.

Blow-up of generalized complex 4-manifolds

We introduce blow-up and blow-down operations for generalized complex 4-manifolds. Combining these with a surgery analogous to the logarithmic transform, we then construct generalized complex structures on nCP2 # m \bar{CP2} for n odd, a family of 4-manifolds which admit neither complex nor symplectic structures unless n=1. We also extend the notion of a symplectic elliptic Lefschetz fibration, so that it expresses a generalized complex 4-manifold as a fibration over a two-dimensional manifold with boundary.

The Stokes Groupoids

We construct and describe a family of groupoids over complex curves which serve as the universal domains of definition for solutions to linear ordinary differential equations with singularities. As a consequence, we obtain a direct, functorial method for resumming formal solutions to such equations.

Symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds

A log symplectic manifold is a Poisson manifold which is generically nondegenerate. We develop two methods for constructing the symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds. The first is a blow-up construction, corresponding to the notion of an elementary modification of a Lie algebroid along a subalgebroid. The second is a gluing construction, whereby groupoids defined on the open sets of an appropriate cover may be combined to obtain global integrations. This allows us to classify all Hausdorff symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of a certain graph of fundamental groups associated to the manifold. Using the same ideas, and as a first step, we also construct and classify the groupoids integrating the Lie algebroid of vector fields tangent to a smooth hypersurface.

Poisson modules and degeneracy loci

In this paper, we study the interplay between modules and sub-objects in holomorphic Poisson geometry. In particular, we define a new notion of "residue" for a Poisson module, analogous to the Poincaré residue of a meromorphic volume form. Of particular interest is the interaction between the residues of the canonical line bundle of a Poisson manifold and its degeneracy loci---where the rank of the Poisson structure drops. As an application, we provide new evidence in favour of Bondal's conjecture that the rank \leq 2k locus of a Fano Poisson manifold always has dimension \geq 2k+1. In particular, we show that the conjecture holds for Fano fourfolds. We also apply our techniques to a family of Poisson structures defined by Fe\uıgin and Odesski\uı, where the degeneracy loci are given by the secant varieties of elliptic normal curves.

Orbits of the Centralizer of a Linear Operator

We describe the orbit structure for the action of the centralizer group of a linear operator on a finite-dimensional complex vector space. The main application is to the classification of solutions to a system of first-order ODEs with constant coefficients. We completely describe the lattice structure on the set of orbits and provide a generating function for the number of orbits in each dimension.

Generalized complex geometry and T-duality

We describe how generalized complex geometry, which interpolates between complex and symplectic geometry, is compatible with T-duality, a relation between quantum field theories discovered by physicists. T-duality relates topologically distinct torus bundles, and prescribes a method for transporting geometrical structures between them. We describe how this relation may be understood as a Courant algebroid isomorphism between the spaces in question. This then allows us to transport Dirac structures, generalized Riemannian metrics, generalized complex and generalized Kahler structures, extending the "Buscher rules" well-known to physicists. Finally, we re-interpret T-duality as a Courant reduction, and explain that T-duality between generalized complex manifolds may be viewed as a generalized complex submanifold (D-brane) of the product, in a way that establishes a direct analogy with the Fourier-Mukai transform.
