Aperiodic Lorentz gas: recurrence and ergodicity

We prove that any generic (i.e., possibly aperiodic) Lorenz gas in two dimensions, with finite horizon and non-degenerate geometrical features, is ergodic if it is recurrent. We also give examples of aperiodic recurrent gases.

More ergodic billiards with an infinite cusp

In a previous paper (nlin.CD/0107041) the following class of billiards was studied: For $f: [0, +\infty) \longrightarrow (0, +\infty)$ convex, sufficiently smooth, and vanishing at infinity, let the billiard table be defined by $Q$, the planar domain delimited by the positive $x$-semiaxis, the positive $y$-semiaxis, and the graph of $f$. For a large class of $f$ we proved that the billiard map was hyperbolic. Furthermore we gave an example of a family of $f$ that makes this map ergodic. Here we extend the latter result to a much wider class of functions.

Semi-dispersing billiards with an infinite cusp

Let $f: [0, +\infty) \to (0, +\infty)$ be a sufficiently smooth convex function, vanishing at infinity. Consider the planar domain $Q$ delimited by the positive $x$-semiaxis, the positive $y$-semiaxis, and the graph of $f$. Under certain conditions on $f$, we prove that the billiard flow in $Q$ has a hyperbolic structure and, for some examples, that it is also ergodic. This is done using the cross section corresponding to collisions with the dispersing part of the boundary. The relevant invariant measure for this Poincaré section is infinite, whence the need to surpass the existing results, designed for finite-measure dynamical systems.

Large deviations for ideal quantum systems

We consider a general d-dimensional quantum system of non-interacting particles, with suitable statistics, in a very large (formally infinite) container. We prove that, in equilibrium, the fluctuations in the density of particles in a subdomain of the container are described by a large deviation function related to the pressure of the system. That is, untypical densities occur with a probability exponentially small in the volume of the subdomain, with the coefficient in the exponent given by the appropriate thermodynamic potential. Furthermore, small fluctuations satisfy the central limit theorem.

Escape orbits and Ergodicity in Infinite Step Billiards

In a previous paper we defined a class of non-compact polygonal billiards, the infinite step billiards: to a given decreasing sequence of non-negative numbers $\{p_{n}$, there corresponds a table $\Bi := \bigcup_{n\in\N} [n,n+1] \times [0,p_{n}]$. In this article, first we generalize the main result of the previous paper to a wider class of examples. That is, a.s. there is a unique escape orbit which belongs to the alpha and omega-limit of every other trajectory. Then, following a recent work of Troubetzkoy, we prove that generically these systems are ergodic for almost all initial velocities, and the entropy with respect to a wide class of ergodic measures is zero.

An Infinite Step Billiard

A class of non-compact billiards is introduced, namely the infinite step billiards, i.e., systems of a point particle moving freely in the domain $Ω= \bigcup_{n\in\N} [n,n+1] \times [0,p_n]$, with elastic reflections on the boundary; here $p_0 = 1, p_n > 0$ and $p_n$ vanishes monotonically. After describing some generic ergodic features of these dynamical systems, we turn to a more detailed study of the example $p_n = 2^{-n}$. What plays an important role in this case are the so called escape orbits, that is, orbits going to $+\infty$ monotonically in the X-velocity. A fairly complete description of them is given. This enables us to prove some results concerning the topology of the dynamics on the billiard.

Ergodic Properties of the Quantum Ideal Gas in the Maxwell-Boltzmann Statistics

It is proved that the quantization of the Volkovyski-Sinai model of ideal gas (in the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics) enjoys at the thermodynamical limit the properties of mixing and ergodicity with respect to the quantum canonical Gibbs state. Plus, the average over the quantum state of a pseudo-differential operator is exactly the average over the classical canonical measure of its Weyl symbol.

Escape Orbits for Non-Compact Flat Billiards

It is proven that, under some conditions on $f$, the non-compact flat billiard $Ω= \{ (x,y) \in \R_0^{+} \times \R_0^{+};\ 0\le y \le f(x) \}$ has no orbits going {\em directly} to $+\infty$. The relevance of such sufficient conditions is discussed.
