"Thermodynamique cachée des particules" and the quantum potential

According to de Broglie, temperature plays a basic role in quantum Hamilton-Jacobi theory. Here we show that a possible dependence on the temperature of the integration constants of the relativistic quantum Hamilton-Jacobi may lead to corrections to the dispersion relations. The change of the relativistic equations is simply described by means of a thermal coordinate.

Superluminality and a Curious Phenomenon in the Relativistic Quantum Hamilton-Jacobi Equation

A basic problem in the relativistic quantum Hamilton-Jacobi theory is to understand whether it may admit superluminal solutions. Here we consider the averaging of the speed on a period of the oscillating term which is similar to Dirac's averaging of the oscillating part of the free electron's speed. Such an averaging solves the problem of getting the $\hbar\to 0$ limit of the speed of the free particle, and leads to solutions that, depending on the integration constants, may be superluminal.

Vector-Valued Modular Forms from the Mumford Form, Schottky-Igusa Form, Product of Thetanullwerte and the Amazing Klein Formula

Vector-valued Siegel modular forms are the natural generalization of the classical elliptic modular forms as seen by studying the cohomology of the universal abelian variety. We show that for g>=4, a new class of vector-valued modular forms, defined on the Teichmuller space, naturally appears from the Mumford forms, a question directly related to the Schottky problem. In this framework we show that the discriminant of the quadric associated to the complex curves of genus 4 is proportional to the square root of the products of Thetanullwerte χ_{68}, which is a proof of the recently rediscovered Klein `amazing formula'. Furthermore, it turns out that the coefficients of such a quadric are derivatives of the Schottky-Igusa form evaluated at the Jacobian locus, implying new theta relations involving the latter, χ_{68} and the theta series corresponding to the even unimodular lattices E_8\oplus E_8 and D_{16}^+. We also find, for g=4, a functional relation between the singular component of the theta divisor and the Riemann period matrix.

Finite Strings From Non-Chiral Mumford Forms

We show that there is an infinite class of partition functions with world-sheet metric, space-time coordinates and first order systems, that correspond to volume forms on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and are free of singularities at the Deligne-Mumford boundary. An example is the partition function with 4=2(c_2+c_3+c_4-c_5) space-time coordinates, a $b$-$c$ system of weight 3, one of weight 4 and a beta-gamma system of weight 5. Such partition functions are derived from the mapping of the Mumford forms to non-factorized scalar forms on M_g introduced in arXiv:1209.6049.

Extending the Belavin-Knizhnik "wonderful formula" by the characterization of the Jacobian

A long-standing question in string theory is to find the explicit expression of the bosonic measure, a crucial issue also in determining the superstring measure. Such a measure was known up to genus three. Belavin and Knizhnik conjectured an expression for genus four which has been proved in the framework of the recently introduced vector-valued Teichmueller modular forms. It turns out that for g>3 the bosonic measure is expressed in terms of such forms. In particular, the genus four Belavin-Knizhnik "wonderful formula" has a remarkable extension to arbitrary genus whose structure is deeply related to the characterization of the Jacobian locus. Furthermore, it turns out that the bosonic string measure has an elegant geometrical interpretation as generating the quadrics in P^{g-1} characterizing the Riemann surface. All this leads to identify forms on the Siegel upper half-space that, if certain conditions related to the characterization of the Jacobian are satisfied, express the bosonic measure as a multiresidue in the Siegel upper half-space. We also suggest that it may exist a super analog on the super Siegel half-space.

Determinantal Characterization of Canonical Curves and Combinatorial Theta Identities

We characterize genus g canonical curves by the vanishing of combinatorial products of g+1 determinants of Brill-Noether matrices. This also implies the characterization of canonical curves in terms of (g-2)(g-3)/2 theta identities. A remarkable mechanism, based on a basis of H^0(K_C) expressed in terms of Szego kernels, reduces such identities to a simple rank condition for matrices whose entries are logarithmic derivatives of theta functions. Such a basis, together with the Fay trisecant identity, also leads to the solution of the question of expressing the determinant of Brill-Noether matrices in terms of theta functions, without using the problematic Klein-Fay section sigma.

Getting superstring amplitudes by degenerating Riemann surfaces

We explicitly show how the chiral superstring amplitudes can be obtained through factorisation of the higher genus chiral measure induced by suitable degenerations of Riemann surfaces. This powerful tool also allows to derive, at any genera, consistency relations involving the amplitudes and the measure. A key point concerns the choice of the local coordinate at the node on degenerate Riemann surfaces that greatly simplifies the computations. As a first application, starting from recent ansaetze for the chiral measure up to genus five, we compute the chiral two-point function for massless Neveu-Schwarz states at genus two, three and four. For genus higher than three, these computations include some new corrections to the conjectural formulae appeared so far in the literature. After GSO projection, the two-point function vanishes at genus two and three, as expected from space-time supersymmetry arguments, but not at genus four. This suggests that the ansatz for the superstring measure should be corrected for genus higher than four.

The Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics: Main Theorems

We consider the two main theorems in the derivation of the Quantum Hamilton--Jacobi Equation from the Equivalence Postulate (EP) of quantum mechanics. The first one concerns a basic cocycle condition, which holds in any dimension with Euclidean or Minkowski metrics and implies a global conformal symmetry underlying the Quantum Hamilton--Jacobi Equation. In one dimension such a condition fixes the Schwarzian equation. The second theorem concerns energy quantization which follows rigorously from consistency of the equivalence postulate.

Superstring measure and non-renormalization of the three-point amplitude

We show that a recently conjectured expression for the superstring three-point amplitude, in the framework of the Cacciatori, Dalla Piazza, van Geemen - Grushevsky ansatz for the chiral measure, fails to vanish at three-loop, in contrast with expectations from non-renormalization theorems. Based on analogous two-loop computations, we discuss the possibility of a non-trivial correction to the amplitude and propose a natural candidate for such a contribution. Thanks to a new remarkable identity, it is reasonable to expect that the corrected three-point amplitude vanishes at three-loop, recovering the agreement with non-renormalization theorems.

The Singular Locus of the Theta Divisor and Quadrics through a Canonical Curve

A section K on a genus g canonical curve C is identified as the key tool to prove new results on the geometry of the singular locus Theta_s of the theta divisor. The K divisor is characterized by the condition of linear dependence of a set of quadrics containing C and naturally associated to a degree g effective divisor on C. K counts the number of intersections of special varieties on the Jacobian torus defined in terms of Theta_s. It also identifies sections of line bundles on the moduli space of algebraic curves, closely related to the Mumford isomorphism, whose zero loci characterize special varieties in the framework of the Andreotti-Mayer approach to the Schottky problem, a result which also reproduces the only previously known case g=4. This new approach, based on the combinatorics of determinantal relations for two-fold products of holomorphic abelian differentials, sheds light on basic structures, and leads to the explicit expressions, in terms of theta functions, of the canonical basis of the abelian holomorphic differentials and of the constant defining the Mumford form. Furthermore, the metric on the moduli space of canonical curves, induced by the Siegel metric, which is shown to be equivalent to the Kodaira-Spencer map of the square of the Bergman reproducing kernel, is explicitly expressed in terms of the Riemann period matrix only, a result previously known for the trivial cases g=2 and g=3. Finally, the induced Siegel volume form is expressed in terms of the Mumford form.

Linear relations among holomorphic quadratic differentials and induced Siegel's metric on M_g

We derive the explicit form of the (g-2)(g-3)/2 linearly independent relations among the products of pairs in a basis of holomorphic abelian differentials in the case of canonical curves of genus g greater than 3. It turns out that Petri's relations remarkably match in determinantal conditions. We explicitly express the volume form on the moduli space M_g of canonical curves induced by the Siegel metric, in terms of the period Riemann matrix only. By the Kodaira-Spencer map, the relations lead to an expression of the induced Siegel metric on M_g, that corresponds to the square of the Bergman reproducing kernel. A key role is played by distinguished bases for holomorphic differentials whose properties also lead to an immediate derivation of Fay's trisecant identity.

Compactified Strings as Quantum Statistical Partition Function on the Jacobian Torus

We show that the solitonic contribution of compactified strings corresponds to the quantum statistical partition function of a free particle living on higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of a compactification in a circle, the Hamiltonian corresponds to the Laplacian on the 2g-dimensional Jacobian torus associated to the genus g Riemann surface corresponding to the string worldsheet. T-duality leads to a symmetry of the partition function mixing time and temperature. Such a classical/quantum correspondence and T-duality shed some light on the well-known interplay between time and temperature in QFT and classical statistical mechanics.

Higher genus superstring amplitudes from the geometry of moduli spaces

We show that the higher genus 4-point superstring amplitude is strongly constrained by the geometry of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. A detailed analysis leads to a natural proposal which satisfies several conditions. The result is based on the recently derived Siegel induced metric on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and on combinatorial products of determinants of holomorphic abelian differentials.

The Cocycle of the Quantum HJ Equation and the Stress Tensor of CFT

We consider two theorems formulated in the derivation of the Quantum Hamilton-Jacobi Equation from the EP. The first one concerns the proof that the cocycle condition uniquely defines the Schwarzian derivative. This is equivalent to show that the infinitesimal variation of the stress tensor "exponentiates" to the Schwarzian derivative. The cocycle condition naturally defines the higher dimensional version of the Schwarzian derivative suggesting a role in the transformation properties of the stress tensor in higher dimensional CFT. The other theorem shows that energy quantization is a direct consequence of the existence of the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation under duality transformations as implied by the EP.

Zamolodchikov relations and Liouville hierarchy in SL(2,R)_k WZNW model

We study the connection between Zamolodchikov operator-valued relations in Liouville field theory and in the SL(2,R)_k WZNW model. In particular, the classical relations in SL(2,R)_k can be formulated as a classical Liouville hierarchy in terms of the isotopic coordinates, and their covariance is easily understood in the framework of the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence. Conversely, we find a closed expression for the classical Liouville decoupling operators in terms of the so called uniformizing Schwarzian operators and show that the associated uniformizing parameter plays the same role as the isotopic coordinates in SL(2,R)_k. The solutions of the j-th classical decoupling equation in the WZNW model span a spin j reducible representation of SL(2,R). Likewise, we show that in Liouville theory solutions of the classical decoupling equations span spin j representations of SL(2,R), which is interpreted as the isometry group of the hyperbolic upper half-plane. We also discuss the connection with the Hamiltonian reduction of SL(2,R)_k WZNW model to Liouville theory.

The Liouville Geometry of N=2 Instantons and the Moduli of Punctured Spheres

We study the instanton contributions of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory and propose that the instanton moduli space is mapped to the moduli space of punctured spheres. Due to the recursive structure of the boundary in the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford stable compactification, this leads to a new recursion relation for the instanton coefficients, which is bilinear. Instanton contributions are expressed as integrals on M_{0,n} in the framework of the Liouville F-models. This also suggests considering instanton contributions as a kind of Hurwitz numbers and also provides a prediction on the asymptotic form of the Gromov-Witten invariants. We also interpret this map in terms of the geometric engineering approach to the gauge theory, namely the topological A-model, as well as in the noncritical string theory framework. We speculate on the extension to nontrivial gravitational background and its relation to the uniformization program. Finally we point out an intriguing analogy with the self-dual YM equations for the gravitational version of SU(2) where surprisingly the same Hauptmodule of the SW solution appears.

Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian Acting on Degree Zero Bundles over Special Riemann Surfaces

We find an infinite set of eigenfunctions for the Laplacian with respect to a flat metric with conical singularities and acting on degree zero bundles over special Riemann surfaces of genus greater than one. These special surfaces correspond to Riemann period matrices satisfying a set of equations which lead to a number theoretical problem. It turns out that these surfaces precisely correspond to branched covering of the torus. This reflects in a Jacobian with a particular kind of complex multiplication.

The Affine Connection of Supersymmetric SO(N)/Sp(N) Theories

We study the covariance properties of the equations satisfied by the generating functions of the chiral operators R and T of supersymmetric SO(N)/Sp(N) theories with symmetric/antisymmetric tensors. It turns out that T is an affine connection. As such it cannot be integrated along cycles on Riemann surfaces. This explains the discrepancies observed by Kraus and Shigemori. Furthermore, by means of the polynomial defining the Riemann surface, seen as quadratic-differential, one can construct an affine connection that added to T leads to a new generating function which can be consistently integrated. Remarkably, thanks to an identity, the original equations are equivalent to equations involving only one-differentials. This provides a geometrical explanation of the map recently derived by Cachazo in the case of Sp(N) with antisymmetric tensor. Finally, we suggest a relation between the Riemann surfaces with rational periods which arise in studying the Laplacian on special Riemann surfaces and the integrality condition for the periods of T.
