Novel architecture for ultra-stable micro-ring resonator based optical frequency combs

We report a novel geometry for OPOs based on nonlinear microcavity resonators. This approach relies on a self-locked scheme that enables OPO emission without the need for thermal locking of the pump laser to the microcavity resonance. By exploiting a CMOS-compatible microring resonator, we achieve oscillation with a complete absence of shutting down, or self-terminating behavior, a very common occurrence in externally pumped OPOs. Further, this scheme consistently produces very wide bandwidth (>300nm, limited by our experimental set-up) combs that oscillate at a spacing of the FSR of the micro cavity resonance.

Photonic Integrated Devices for Nonlinear Optics

We review our recent progresses on frequency conversion in integrated devices, focusing primarily on experiments based on strip-loaded and quantum-well intermixed AlGaAs waveguides, and on CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica glass waveguides. The former includes both second- and third-order interactions, demonstrating wavelength conversion by tunable difference-frequency generation over a bandwidth of more than nm, as well as broadband self-phase modulation and tunable four-wave mixing. The latter includes four-wave mixing using low-power continuous-wave light in microring resonators as well as hyper-parametric oscillation in a high quality factor resonator, towards the realization of an integrated multiple wavelength source with important applications for telecommunications, spectroscopy, and metrology.

Phase-sensitive optical pulse characterization on a chip via Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-Field Reconstruction (SPIDER)

The recent introduction of coherent optical communications has created a compelling need for ultra-fast phase-sensitive measurement techniques operating at milliwatt peak power levels and in time scales ranging from sub-picoseconds to nanoseconds. Previous reports of ultrafast optical signal measurements in integrated platforms[8-10] include time-lens temporal imaging on a silicon chip[8,9] and waveguide-based Frequency-Resolved Optical Gating (FROG). Time-lens imaging is phase insensitive while waveguide-based FROG methods require the integration of long tuneable delay lines - still an unsolved challenge. Here, we report a device capable of characterizing both the amplitude and phase of ultrafast optical pulses with the aid of a synchronized incoherently-related clock pulse. It is based on a novel variation of Spectral Phase Interferometry for Direct Electric-Field Reconstruction (SPIDER)that exploits degenerate four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a CMOS compatible chip. We measure pulses with <100mW peak power, a frequency bandwidth >1THz, and up to 100ps pulsewidths, yielding a time-bandwidth product (TBP)>100.

Skirting Terahertz Waves in a Photo-excited Nanoslit Structure

Terahertz fields can be dramatically enhanced as they propagate through nanometer-sized slits. The enhancement is mediated by significant accumulation of the induced surface charges on the surrounding metal. This enhancement is shown here to be dynamically modulated and the nanoslits are gradually shunted using a copropagating optical beam. The terahertz fields are found to skirt the nanoscale photo-excited region underneath the slits, scattering to the far field and rigorously mapping the near field.

CMOS-compatible, multiplexed source of heralded photon pairs: towards integrated quantum combs

We report an integrated photon pair source based on a CMOS-compatible microring resonator that generates multiple, simultaneous, and independent photon pairs at different wavelengths in a frequency comb compatible with fiber communication wavelength division multiplexing channels (200 GHz channel separation) and with a linewidth that is compatible with quantum memories (110 MHz). It operates in a self-locked pump configuration, avoiding the need for active stabilization, making it extremely robust even at very low power levels.

Nonlinear imaging and 3D-mapping of terahertz fields with Kerr media

We investigate the spatially and temporally resolved four-wave mixing of terahertz fields and optical pulses in large band-gap dielectrics, such as diamond. We show that it is possible to perform beam profiling and space-time resolved mapping of terahertz fields with sub-wavelength THz resolution by encoding the spatial information into an optical signal, which can then be recorded by a standard CCD camera.

Counter-propagating frequency mixing with Terahertz waves in diamond

Frequency conversion by means of Kerr-nonlinearity is one of the most common and exploited nonlinear optical processes in the UV, visible, IR and Mid-IR spectral regions. Here we show that wave mixing of an optical field and a Terahertz wave can be achieved in diamond, resulting in the frequency conversion of the THz radiation either by sum- or difference-frequency generation. In the latter case, we show that this process is phase-matched and most efficient in a counter-propagating geometry.

Scaling mechanism for efficient wavelength conversion in laser plasmas

Laser-induced ionization is a fundamental tool for the frequency conversion of lasers into spectral regions so far inaccessible, including both extreme ultraviolet and terahertz. The low-frequency currents induced by laser-driven ionization generate extremely broadband, single-cycle terahertz pulses, with applications ranging from remote sensing to optical pulse diagnostic, yet strong limitations arise from the low conversion efficiencies of this mechanism. We show a remarkable increase of the radiated terahertz energy with the laser wavelength and we relate this observation to the stronger action of long-wavelength fields on ionization-induced free-carriers. Ultimately, the use of mid-infrared pulses instead of the near-infrared ones employed so far enables the unprecedented table-top generation of the extremely high terahertz fields (>4 MV/cm) required for, e.g. the optical manipulation of quantum states, attosecond pulse synthesis and time-resolved studies of ultrafast electron dynamics. Furthermore, such high fields allowed us to perform space-time resolved terahertz diagnostics exploiting standard optical components.

Accessible Light Bullets via synergetic nonlinearities

We introduce a new form of stable spatio-temporal self-trapped optical packets stemming from the interplay of local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Pulsed self-trapped light beams in media with both electronic and molecular nonlinear responses are addressed to prove that spatial and temporal effects can be decoupled, allowing for independent tuning. We numerically demonstrate that (3+1)D light bullets and anti-bullets, i. e. bright and dark temporal solitons embedded in stable (2+1)D nonlocal spatial solitons, can be generated in reorientational media under experimentally feasible conditions.

Observation of a gradient catastrophe generating solitons

We investigate the propagation of a dark beam in a defocusing medium in the strong nonlinear regime. We observe for the first time a shock fan filled with non-interacting one-dimensional grey solitons that emanates from a gradient catastrophe developing around a null of the optical intensity. Remarkably this scenario turns out to be very robust, persisting also when the material nonlocal response averages the nonlinearity over dimensions much larger than the emerging soliton filaments.

Nonlinear management of the angular momentum of soliton clusters

We demonstrate an original approach to acquire nonlinear control over the angular momentum of a cluster of solitary waves. Our model, derived from a general description of nonlinear energy propagation in dispersive media, shows that the cluster angular momentum can be adjusted by acting on the global energy input into the system. The phenomenon is experimentally verified in liquid crystals by observing power-dependent rotation of a two-soliton cluster.

Complex dynamics and configurational entropy of spatial optical solitons in nonlocal media

Intense light propagating in a nonlinear medium can generate an ensemble of interacting filaments of light, or spatial solitons. Using nematic liquid crystals, we demonstrate that they undergo a collective behavior typical of complex systems, including the formation of clusters and sound-like vibrations, as well as the reduction of the configurational entropy, controlled by the degree of nonlocality of the medium.

Spatial solitons and modulational instability in the presence of large birefringence: the case of highly non-local liquid crystal

With reference to spatially non-local nematic liquid crystals, we develop a theory of optical spatial solitons and modulational instability in anisotropic media with arbitrarily large birefringence. Asymmetric spatial profiles and multivalued features are predicted for self-localized light versus walk-off angle. The results hold valid for generic self-focusing birefringent media and apply to large angle steering of individual and multiple self-trapped optical beams.

Signal processing by opto-optical interactions between self-localized and free propagating beams in liquid crystals

The reorientational nonlinearity of nematic liquid crystals enables a self-localized spatial soliton and its waveguide to be deflected or destroyed by a control beam propagating across the cell. We demonstrate a simple all-optical readdressing scheme by exploiting the lens-like perturbation induced by an external beam on both a nematicon and a co-polarized guided signal of different wavelength. Angular steering as large as 2.2 degrees was obtained for control powers as low as 32mW in the near infrared.

Spatially incoherent modulational instability in a non local medium

We investigate one-dimensional transverse modulational instability in a non local medium excited with a spatially incoherent source. Employing undoped nematic liquid crystals in a planar pre-tilted configuration, we investigate the role of the spectral broadening induced by incoherence in conjunction with the spatially non local molecular reorientation. The phenomenon is modeled using the Wigner transform.

Observation of optical spatial solitons in a highly nonlocal medium

We report on the observation and quantitative assessment of self-trapped pulsating beams in a highly non-local nonlinear regime. The experiments were conducted in nematic liquid crystals and allow a meaningful comparison with the prediction of a scalar theory in the perturbative limit, while addressing the need for beyond-paraxial analytical treatments.
