Classification of $f(R)$ Theories Of Inflation And The Uniqueness of Starobinsky Model

We classify $f(R)$ theories using a mathematical analogy between slow-roll inflation and the renormalization-group flow. We derive the power spectra and spectral indices class by class and compare them with the latest data. The framework used for the classification allows us to determine the general structure of the $f(R)$ functions that belong to each class. Our main result is that only two classes survive. Moreover, we show that the Starobinsky model is the only polynomial $f(R)$ that can realize slow-roll inflation. In fact, all other polynomials belong to a special class that can only realize constant-roll inflation, at least far enough in the past. We point out some of the issues involved in considering a smooth transition between constant-roll and slow-roll inflation in this class of models. Finally, we derive the map that transforms the results from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame.

Power Spectra in Double-Field Inflation Using Renormalization-Group Techniques

A perturbative strategy for inflation described by two-inflaton fields is developed using a mathematical analogy with the renormalization-group. Two small quantities, $\alpha$ and $\lambda$, corresponding to standard slow-roll parameters are defined and systematic expansions of all inflationary quantities in terms of powers of $\alpha$ and $\lambda$ are found. No other slow-roll parameters are needed. To illustrate this perturbative method in the multi-field context, we adopt a simple two-inflaton model with quadratic potentials in the parameter range where both fields contribute similarly to the dynamics of inflation. The model, even though it is not a viable alternative for phenomenological description of the inflationary period, nicely illustrates subtleties of the perturbative approach. In particular, this method allows us to derive two independent gauge-invariant scalar perturbations that are conserved in the superhorizon limit, overcoming typical problems that emerge in multi-field inflation. Furthermore, it is possible to perform nonperturbative resummations that allow to study the model in a true multi-field regime. We derive tensor and scalar power spectra to the next-to-next-to-leading and next-to-leading orders, respectively, as well as their spectral indices. The hierarchy between the two scalar perturbations allows us to single out the dominant entry of the scalar power-spectrum matrix. Modifications due to the second inflaton occur already at the leading order. Finally, we explain why the quadratic two-inflaton model is not compatible with the present experimental constraints even though non-trivial corrections to scalar perturbations do emerge.

High-energy behavior of scattering amplitudes in theories with purely virtual particles

We study a class of renormalizable quantum field theories with purely virtual particles that exhibits nonrenormalizable behavior in the high-energy limit of scattering cross sections, which grow as powers of the center-of-mass energy squared and seems to violate unitarity bounds. We point out that the problem should be viewed as a violation of perturbativity, instead of unitarity, and show that the resummation of self energies fixes the issue. As an explicit example, we consider a class of $O(N)$ theories at the leading order in the large-$N$ expansion and show that the different quantization prescription of purely virtual particles takes care of the nonrenormalizable behavior, making the resummed cross sections to decrease at high energies and the amplitudes to satisfy the unitarity bounds. We compare the results to the case of theories with ghosts, where the resummation cannot change the behavior of cross sections due to certain cancellations in the high-energy expansion of the self energies. These results are particularly relevant for quantum gravity.

Renormalization of Massive Rank-1 Field Theory Nonminimally Coupled to Quantum Gravity

We consider a self-interacting, massive rank-1 field coupled to quantum gravity. The theory is renormalizable by power counting and contains a massive spin-1 field and a massive scalar field. The latter has a propagator with negative residue and it is quantized as a purely virtual particle, namely it cannot appear as external on-shell state but contributes to renormalization. In this way the resulting theory is also unitary, both in flat spacetime and when it is coupled to renormalizable quantum gravity (where purely virtual particles are required as well). We compute the full set of one-loop beta functions, including those of the nonminimal couplings. We show that the gravitational couplings cannot be made asymptotically free in absence of tachyons, even with the addition of the two nonminimal terms. Various aspects of renormalizability are discussed by studying the beta functions. Finally, we compare our model with Proca theory, where renormalizability is spoiled if self interactions are present.

Higher-Derivative Quantum Gravity with Purely Virtual Particles: Renormalizability and Unitarity

We review the formulation of quantum field theories with purely virtual particles, a new type of degrees of freedom that can mediate interactions without ever appear as external on-shell states. This property allows to solve the problem of ghosts in higher-derivative quantum gravity, leading to a renormalizable and unitary theory. The main steps for the BRST quantization of gravity are recalled and renormalizability is discussed. Then, we introduce purely virtual particles in a general quantum field theory and show the derivation of the so-called spectral identities, which are a key ingredient to prove unitarity. Finally, phenomenological consequences and predictions in inflationary cosmology are presented.

One-Loop Integrals for Purely Virtual Particles

Quantum field theories with purely virtual particles, or fakeons, require suitable modifications in one-loop integrals. We provide the expressions for the modified scalar integrals in the case of the bubble, triangle and box diagrams. The new functions are defined by means of their difference with the `t Hooft-Veltman scalar integrals. The modifications do not affect the derivation of the Passarino-Veltman reduction and one-loop integrals with nontrivial numerators can be decomposed in the same fashion. Therefore, the new functions can be directly used to study the phenomenology of any models with standard particles and fakeons. We compare our results with standard amplitudes and show that the largest differences are often localized in relatively small energy ranges and are characterized by additional nonanalyticities. Finally, we give explicit examples in the context of a toy model, where cross sections and decay widths of standard particles are modified by the presence of fakeons.

Massive Higher-Spin Multiplets and Asymptotic Freedom in Quantum Gravity

We consider massive higher-spin multiplets coupled to quantum gravity and compute their contributions to the gravitational beta functions at one loop. Such theories, if quantized with the Feynman prescription, would contain ghosts. Instead, those degrees of freedom are turned into purely virtual particles by means of the fakeon prescription and the resulting theories are both renormalizable and unitary. We extract the necessary number of fields to obtain asymptotic freedom by solving the relevant renormalization-group equations in the ultraviolet limit. We show that in the case of irreducible rank-$s$ bosons with minimal kinetic term only a certain number of fields with $0\leq s \leq 3$ is compatible with asymptotic freedom. No solution involving fermionic rank-$s$ fields are found. We also consider the cases of rank-$1$ and symmetric rank-$2$ tensor fields with nonminimal kinetic terms and repeat the analysis, finding that the allowed number of fields is enlarged. Possible implications for metric affine theories of gravity are pointed out.

Renormalization-group techniques for single-field inflation in primordial cosmology and quantum gravity

We study inflation as a "cosmic" renormalization-group flow. The flow, which encodes the dependence on the background metric, is described by a running coupling $α$, which parametrizes the slow roll, a de Sitter free, analytic beta function and perturbation spectra that are RG invariant in the superhorizon limit. Using RG invariance as a guiding principle, we classify the main types of flows according to the properties of their spectra, without referring to their origins from specific actions or models. Novel features include spectra with essential singularities in $α$ and violations of the relation $r+8n_{\text{t}}=0$ to the leading order. Various classes of potentials studied in the literature can be described by means of the RG approach, even when the action includes a Weyl-squared term, while others are left out. In known cases, the classification helps identify the models that are ruled out by data. The RG approach is also able to generate spectra that cannot be derived from standard Lagrangian formulations.

Phenomenology of a Fake Inert Doublet Model

We introduce a new way of modeling the physics beyond the Standard Model by considering fake, strictly off-shell degrees of freedom: the fakeons. To demonstrate the approach and exemplify its reach, we re-analyze the phenomenology of the Inert Doublet Model under the assumption that the second doublet is a fakeon. Remarkably, the fake doublet avoids the most stringent $Z$-pole constraints regardless of the chosen mass scale, thereby allowing for the presence of new effects well below the electroweak scale. Furthermore, the absence of on-shell propagation prevents fakeons from inducing missing energy signatures in collider experiments. The distinguishing features of the model appear at the loop level, where fakeons modify the Higgs boson $h\toγγ$ decay width and the Higgs trilinear coupling. The running of Standard Model parameters proceeds as in the usual Inert Doublet Model case. Therefore, the fake doublet can also ensure the stability of the Standard Model vacuum. Our work shows that fakeons are a valid alternative to the usual tools of particle physics model building, with the potential to shape a new paradigm, where the significance of the existing experimental constraints towards new physics must necessarily be reconsidered.

A fake doublet solution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

Extensions to the Standard Model that use strictly off-shell degrees of freedom - the fakeons - allow for new measurable interactions at energy scales usually precluded by the constraints that target the on-shell propagation of new particles. Here we employ the interactions between a new fake scalar doublet and the muon to explain the recent Fermilab measurement of its anomalous magnetic moment. Remarkably, unlike in the case of usual particles, the experimental result can be matched for fakeon masses below the electroweak scale without contradicting the stringent precision data and collider bounds on new light degrees of freedom. Our analysis, therefore, demonstrates that the fakeon approach offers unexpected viable possibilities to model new physics naturally at low scales.

Predictions of quantum gravity in inflationary cosmology: effects of the Weyl-squared term

We derive the predictions of quantum gravity with fakeons on the amplitudes and spectral indices of the scalar and tensor fluctuations in inflationary cosmology. The action is $R+R^{2}$ plus the Weyl-squared term. The ghost is eliminated by turning it into a fakeon, that is to say a purely virtual particle. We work to the next-to-leading order of the expansion around the de Sitter background. The consistency of the approach puts a lower bound ($ m_{χ}>m_{ϕ}/4$) on the mass $m_{χ}$ of the fakeon with respect to the mass $m_{ϕ}$ of the inflaton. The tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ is predicted within less than an order of magnitude ($4/3<N^{2}r<12$ to the leading order in the number of $e$-foldings $N$). Moreover, the relation $r\simeq -8n_{T}$ is not affected by the Weyl-squared term. No vector and no other scalar/tensor degree of freedom is present.

On The Behavior Of Gravitational Force At Small Scales

We point out the idea that, at small scales, gravity can be described by the standard degrees of freedom of general relativity, plus a scalar particle and a degree of freedom of a new type: the fakeon. This possibility leads to fundamental implications in understanding gravitational force at quantum level as well as phenomenological consequences in the corresponding classical theory.

Quantum Gravity, Fakeons And Microcausality

We investigate the properties of fakeons in quantum gravity at one loop. The theory is described by a graviton multiplet, which contains the fluctuation $h_{μν}$ of the metric, a massive scalar $ϕ$ and the spin-2 fakeon $χ_{μν}$. The fields $ϕ$ and $χ_{μν}$ are introduced explicitly at the level of the Lagrangian by means of standard procedures. We consider two options, where $ϕ$ is quantized as a physical particle or a fakeon, and compute the absorptive part of the self-energy of the graviton multiplet. The width of $χ_{μν}$, which is negative, shows that the theory predicts the violation of causality at energies larger than the fakeon mass. We address this issue and compare the results with those of the Stelle theory, where $χ_{μν}$ is a ghost instead of a fakeon.

The Ultraviolet Behavior Of Quantum Gravity

A theory of quantum gravity has been recently proposed by means of a novel quantization prescription, which is able to turn the poles of the free propagators that are due to the higher derivatives into fakeons. The classical Lagrangian contains the cosmological term, the Hilbert term, $\sqrt{-g}R_{μν}R^{μν}$ and $\sqrt{-g}R^{2}$. In this paper, we compute the one-loop renormalization of the theory and the absorptive part of the graviton self energy. The results illustrate the mechanism that makes renormalizability compatible with unitarity. The fakeons disentangle the real part of the self energy from the imaginary part. The former obeys a renormalizable power counting, while the latter obeys the nonrenormalizable power counting of the low energy expansion and is consistent with unitarity in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant. The value of the absorptive part is related to the central charge $c$ of the matter fields coupled to gravity.

Perturbative unitarity of Lee-Wick quantum field theory

We study the perturbative unitarity of the Lee-Wick models, formulated as nonanalytically Wick rotated Euclidean theories. The complex energy plane is divided into disconnected regions and the values of a loop integral in the various regions are related to one another by a nonanalytic procedure. We show that the one-loop diagrams satisfy the expected, unitary cutting equations in each region: only the physical degrees of freedom propagate through the cuts. The goal can be achieved by working in suitable subsets of each region and proving that the cutting equations can be analytically continued as a whole. We make explicit calculations in the cases of the bubble and triangle diagrams and address the generality of our approach. We also show that the same higher-derivative models violate unitarity if they are formulated directly in Minkowski spacetime.

A new formulation of Lee-Wick quantum field theory

The Lee-Wick models are higher-derivative theories that are claimed to be unitary thanks to a peculiar cancelation mechanism. In this paper, we provide a new formulation of the models, to clarify several aspects that have remained quite mysterious, so far. Specifically, we define them as nonanalytically Wick rotated Euclidean theories. The complex energy plane is divided into disconnected regions, which can be related to one another by a well-defined, albeit nonanalytic procedure. Working in a generic Lorentz frame, the models are intrinsically equipped with the right recipe to treat the pinchings of the Lee-Wick poles, with no need of external ad hoc prescriptions. We describe these features in detail by calculating the one-loop bubble diagram and explaining how the key properties generalize to more complicated diagrams. The physical results of our formulation are different from those of the previous ones. The unusual behaviors of the physical amplitudes lead to interesting phenomenological predictions.

Finite quantum gauge theories

We explicitly compute the one-loop exact beta function for a nonlocal extension of the standard gauge theory, in particular Yang-Mills and QED. The theory, made of a weakly nonlocal kinetic term and a local potential of the gauge field, is unitary (ghost-free) and perturbatively super-renormalizable. Moreover, in the action we can always choose the potential (consisting of one "killer operator") to make zero the beta function of running gauge coupling constant. The outcome is "a UV finite theory for any gauge interaction". Our calculations are done in D=4, but the results can be generalized to even or odd spacetime dimensions. We compute the contribution to the beta function from two different killer operators by using two independent techniques, namely the Feynman diagrams and the Barvinsky-Vilkovisky traces. By making the theories finite we are able to solve also the Landau pole problems, in particular in QED. Without any potential the beta function of the one-loop super-renormalizable theory shows a universal Landau pole in the running coupling constant in the ultraviolet regime (UV), regardless of the specific higher-derivative structure. However, the dressed propagator shows neither the Landau pole in the UV, nor the singularities in the infrared regime (IR).
