Electrical plasmon detection in graphene waveguides

We present a simple device architecture that allows all-electrical detection of plasmons in a graphene waveguide. The key principle of our electrical plasmon detection scheme is the non-linear nature of the hydrodynamic equations of motion that describe transport in graphene at room temperature and in a wide range of carrier densities. These non-linearities yield a dc voltage in response to the oscillating field of a propagating plasmon. For illustrative purposes, we calculate the dc voltage arising from the propagation of the lowest-energy modes in a fully analytical fashion. Our device architecture for all-electrical plasmon detection paves the way for the integration of graphene plasmonic waveguides in electronic circuits.

Spin-resolved optical conductivity of two-dimensional group-VIB transition-metal dichalcogenides

We present an ab-initio study of the spin-resolved optical conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) group-VIB transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We carry out fully-relativistic density-functional-theory calculations combined with maximally localized Wannier functions to obtain band manifolds at extremely high resolutions and focus on the photo-response of 2D TMDs to circularly-polarized light in a wide frequency range. We present extensive numerical results for monolayer TMDs involving molybdenum and tungsten combined with sulphur and selenium. Our numerical approach allows us to locate with a high degree of accuracy the positions of the points in the Brillouin zone that are responsible for van Hove singularities in the optical response. Surprisingly, some of the saddle points do not occur exactly along high-symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone, although they happen to be in their close proximity.

Long-lived spin plasmons in a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas

Collective charge-density modes (plasmons) of the clean two-dimensional unpolarized electron gas are stable, for momentum conservation prevents them from decaying into single-particle excitations. Collective spin-density modes (spin plasmons) possess no similar protection and rapidly decay by production of electron-hole pairs. Nevertheless, if the electron gas has a sufficiently high degree of spin polarization ($P>1/7$, where $P$ is the ratio of the equilibrium spin density and the total electron density, for a parabolic single-particle spectrum) we find that a long-lived spin-plasmon---a collective mode in which the densities of up and down spins oscillate with opposite phases---can exist within a "pseudo gap" of the single-particle excitation spectrum. The ensuing collectivization of the spin excitation spectrum is quite remarkable and should be directly visible in Raman scattering experiments. The predicted mode could dramatically improve the efficiency of coupling between spin-wave-generating devices, such as spin-torque oscillators.

Gate-tunable coherent perfect absorption of terahertz radiation in graphene

Perfect absorption of radiation in a graphene sheet may play a pivotal role in the realization of technologically relevant optoelectronic devices. In particular, perfect absorption of radiation in the terahertz (THz) spectral range would tremendously boost the utility of graphene in this difficult range of photon energies, which still lacks cheap and robust devices operating at room temperature. In this work we show that unpatterned graphene flakes deposited on appropriate substrates can display gate-tunable coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in the THz spectral range. We present theoretical estimates for the CPA operating frequency as a function of doping, which take into account the presence of common sources of disorder in graphene samples.

Highly confined low-loss plasmons in graphene-boron nitride heterostructures

Graphene plasmons were predicted to possess ultra-strong field confinement and very low damping at the same time, enabling new classes of devices for deep subwavelength metamaterials, single-photon nonlinearities, extraordinarily strong light-matter interactions and nano-optoelectronic switches. While all of these great prospects require low damping, thus far strong plasmon damping was observed, with both impurity scattering and many-body effects in graphene proposed as possible explanations. With the advent of van der Waals heterostructures, new methods have been developed to integrate graphene with other atomically flat materials. In this letter we exploit near-field microscopy to image propagating plasmons in high quality graphene encapsulated between two films of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We determine dispersion and particularly plasmon damping in real space. We find unprecedented low plasmon damping combined with strong field confinement, and identify the main damping channels as intrinsic thermal phonons in the graphene and dielectric losses in the h-BN. The observation and in-depth understanding of low plasmon damping is the key for the development of graphene nano-photonic and nano-optoelectronic devices.

The XYZ chain with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions: from spin-orbit-coupled lattice bosons to interacting Kitaev chains

Using the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm (DMRG) and a finite-size scaling analysis, we study the properties of the one-dimensional completely-anisotropic spin-1/2 XYZ model with Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. The model shows a rich phase diagram: depending on the value of the coupling constants, the system can display different kinds of ferromagnetic order and Luttinger-liquid behavior. Transitions from ferromagnetic to Luttinger-liquid phases are first order. We thoroughly discuss the transition between different ferromagnetic phases, which, in the absence of DM interactions, belongs to the XX universality class. We provide evidence that the DM exchange term turns out to split this critical line into two separated Ising-like transitions and that in between a disordered phase may appear. Our study sheds light on the general problem of strongly-interacting spin-orbit-coupled bosonic gases trapped in an optical lattice and can be used to characterize the topological properties of superconducting nanowires in the presence of an imposed supercurrent and of interactions.

Plasmon losses due to electron-phonon scattering: the case of graphene encapsulated in hexagonal Boron Nitride

Graphene sheets encapsulated between hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) slabs display superb electronic properties due to very limited scattering from extrinsic disorder sources such as Coulomb impurities and corrugations. Such samples are therefore expected to be ideal platforms for highly-tunable low-loss plasmonics in a wide spectral range. In this Article we present a theory of collective electron density oscillations in a graphene sheet encapsulated between two hBN semi-infinite slabs (hBN/G/hBN). Graphene plasmons hybridize with hBN optical phonons forming hybrid plasmon-phonon (HPP) modes. We focus on scattering of these modes against graphene's acoustic phonons and hBN optical phonons, two sources of scattering that are expected to play a key role in hBN/G/hBN stacks. We find that at room temperature the scattering against graphene's acoustic phonons is the dominant limiting factor for hBN/G/hBN stacks, yielding theoretical inverse damping ratios of hybrid plasmon-phonon modes of the order of $50$-$60$, with a weak dependence on carrier density and a strong dependence on illumination frequency. We confirm that the plasmon lifetime is not directly correlated with the mobility: in fact, it can be anti-correlated.

Quantum capacitance and Landau parameters of massless Dirac fermions in graphene

We present extensive numerical results for the thermodynamic density of states (i.e. quantum capacitance) of a two-dimensional massless Dirac fermion fluid in a doped graphene sheet. In particular, by employing the random phase approximation, we quantify the impact of screening exerted by a metal gate located nearby a graphene flake. Finally, we calculate the spin- and circularly-symmetric Landau parameter, which can be experimentally extracted from independent measurements on the same setup of the quantum capacitance and quasiparticle velocity.

Generation and morphing of plasmons in graphene superlattices

Recent experimental studies on graphene on hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) have demonstrated that hBN is not only a passive substrate that ensures superb electronic properties of graphene's carriers, but that it actively modifies their massless Dirac fermion character through a periodic moiré potential. In this work we present a theory of the plasmon excitation spectrum of massless Dirac fermions in a moiré superlattice. We demonstrate that graphene-hBN stacks offer a rich platform for plasmonics in which control of plasmon modes can occur not only via electrostatic gating but also by adjusting e.g. the relative crystallographic

A stable path to ferromagnetic hydrogenated graphene growth

In this paper, we propose a practical way to stabilize half-hydrogenated graphene (graphone). We show that the dipole moments induced by an hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) substrate on graphene stabilize the hydrogen atoms on one sublattice of the graphene layer and suppress the migration of the absorbed hydrogen atoms. Based upon first principle spin polarized density of states (DOS) calculations, we show that the half hydrogenated graphene (graphone) obtained in different graphene-h-BN heterostructures exhibits a half metallic state. We propose to use this new exotic material for spin valve and other spintronics devices and applications.

The quasiparticle lifetime in a doped graphene sheet

We present a calculation of the quasiparticle decay rate due to electron-electron interactions in a doped graphene sheet. In particular, we emphasize subtle differences between the perturbative calculation of this quantity in a doped graphene sheet and the corresponding one in ordinary parabolic-band two-dimensional (2D) electron liquids. In the random phase approximation, dynamical overscreening near the light cone yields a universal quasiparticle lifetime, which is independent of the dielectric environment surrounding the 2D massless Dirac fermion fluid.

Revealing the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene on SiC: An angle-resolved photoemission study

In recent times, trilayer graphene has attracted wide attention owing to its stacking and electric field dependent electronic properties. However, a direct and well-resolved experimental visualization of its band structure has not yet been reported. In this work, we present angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data which show with high resolution the electronic band structure of trilayer graphene obtained on α-SiC(0001) and β-SiC(111) via hydrogen intercalation. Electronic bands obtained from tight-binding calculations are fitted to the experimental data to extract the interatomic hopping parameters for Bernal and rhombohedral stacked trilayers. Low energy electron microscopy (LEEM) measurements demonstrate that the trilayer domains extend over areas of tens of square micrometers, suggesting the feasibility of exploiting this material in electronic and photonic devices. Furthermore, our results suggest that on SiC substrates the occurrence of rhombohedral stacked trilayer is significantly higher than in natural bulk graphite.

Theory of integer quantum Hall polaritons in graphene

We present a theory of the cavity quantum electrodynamics of the graphene cyclotron resonance. By employing a canonical transformation, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the system comprised of two neighboring Landau levels dressed by the cavity electromagnetic field (integer quantum Hall polaritons). This generalized Dicke Hamiltonian, which contains terms that are quadratic in the electromagnetic field and respects gauge invariance, is then used to calculate thermodynamic properties of the quantum Hall polariton system. Finally, we demonstrate that the generalized Dicke description fails when the graphene sheet is heavily doped, i.e. when the Landau level spectrum of 2D massless Dirac fermions is approximately harmonic. In this case we `integrate out' the Landau levels in valence band and obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the entire stack of Landau levels in conduction band, as dressed by strong light-matter interactions.

Electron-hole pairing in graphene-GaAs heterostructures

Vertical heterostructures combining different layered materials offer novel opportunities for applications and fundamental studies of collective behavior driven by inter-layer Coulomb coupling. Here we report heterostructures comprising a single-layer (or bilayer) graphene carrying a fluid of massless (massive) chiral carriers, and a quantum well created in GaAs 31.5 nm below the surface, supporting a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. These are a new class of double-layer devices composed of spatially-separated electron and hole fluids. We find that the Coulomb drag resistivity significantly increases for temperatures below 5-10 K, following a logarithmic law. This anomalous behavior is a signature of the onset of strong inter-layer correlations, compatible with the formation of a condensate of permanent excitons. The ability to induce strongly-correlated electron-hole states paves the way for the realization of coherent circuits with minimal dissipation and nanodevices including analog-to-digital converters and topologically protected quantum bits.

A Corbino disk viscometer for 2D quantum electron liquids

The shear viscosity of a variety of strongly interacting quantum fluids, ranging from ultracold atomic Fermi gases to quark-gluon plasmas, can be accurately measured. On the contrary, no experimental data exist, to the best of our knowledge, on the shear viscosity of two-dimensional quantum electron liquids hosted in a solid-state matrix. In this Letter we propose a Corbino disk device, which allows a determination of the viscosity of a quantum electron liquid from the dc potential difference that arises between the inner and the outer edge of the disk in response to an oscillating magnetic flux.

Topological pumping in class-D superconducting wires

We study adiabatic pumping at a normal metal/class-D superconductor hybrid interface when superconductivity is induced through the proximity effect in a spin-orbit coupled nanowire in the presence of a tilted Zeeman field. When the induced order parameter in the nanowire is non-uniform, the phase diagram has isolated trivial regions surrounded by topological ones. We show that in this case the pumped charge is quantized in units of the elementary charge $e$ and has a topological nature.

Photocurrent-based detection of Terahertz radiation in graphene

Graphene is a promising candidate for the development of detectors of Terahertz (THz) radiation. A well-known detection scheme due to Dyakonov and Shur exploits the confinement of plasma waves in a field-effect transistor (FET), whereby a dc photovoltage is generated in response to a THz field. This scheme has already been experimentally studied in a graphene FET [L. Vicarelli et al., Nature Mat. 11, 865 (2012)]. In the quest for devices with a better signal-to-noise ratio, we theoretically investigate a plasma-wave photodetector in which a dc photocurrent is generated in a graphene FET. The rectified current features a peculiar change of sign when the frequency of the incoming radiation matches an even multiple of the fundamental frequency of plasma waves in the FET channel. The noise equivalent power per unit bandwidth of our device is shown to be much smaller than that of a Dyakonov-Shur detector in a wide spectral range.

The impact of disorder on Dirac plasmon losses

Recent scattering-type scanning near-field optical spectroscopy (s-SNOM) experiments on single-layer graphene have reported Dirac plasmon lifetimes that are substantially shorter than the dc transport scattering time τ_{tr}. We highlight that the plasmon lifetime is fundamentally different from τ_{tr} since it is controlled by the imaginary part of the current-current linear response function at finite momentum and frequency. We first present the minimal theory of the extrinsic lifetime of Dirac plasmons due to scattering against impurities. We then show that a very reasonable concentration of charged impurities yields a plasmon damping rate which is in good agreement with s-SNOM experimental results.
