Quantitative isoperimetric inequalities in capillarity problems and cones in strong and barycentric forms

We study quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for two different perimeter-type functionals. We first consider classical capillarity functionals, which measure the perimeter of sets in a Euclidean half-space, assigning a constant weight $\lambda \in (-1, 1)$ to the portion of the boundary that lies on the boundary of the half-space. We then consider the relative perimeter of sets contained in some suitable convex cone in the Euclidean space. In both settings, we establish sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequalities in the so-called strong form. More precisely, we show that the isoperimetric deficit of a competitor not only controls the Fraenkel asymmetry, but it also controls an oscillation asymmetry that measures how much the unit normals to the boundary of a competitor deviate from those of an isoperimetric set. Our technique is also able to explicitly identify a center that can be employed to compute the asymmetries. In particular, we also derive barycentric versions of these quantitative isoperimetric inequalities (both in the classical and in the strong form). The proofs are based on the derivation of Fuglede-type estimates for graphs defined on general spherically convex domains, in combination with a new application of the selection principle that directly provides the inequalities in barycentric form.

A sharp spectral splitting theorem

We prove a sharp spectral generalization of the Cheeger--Gromoll splitting theorem. We show that if a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $n\geq 2$ has at least two ends and \[ \lambda_1(-\gamma\Delta+\mathrm{Ric})\geq 0, \] for some $\gamma<\frac{4}{n-1}$, then $M$ splits isometrically as $\mathbb R\times N$ for some compact manifold $N$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We show that the constant $\frac{4}{n-1}$ is sharp, and the multiple-end assumption is necessary for any $\gamma>0$.

Fine properties of nonlinear potentials and a unified perspective on monotonicity formulas

We rigorously show that a large family of monotone quantities along the weak inverse mean curvature flow is the limit case of the corresponding ones along the level sets of $p$-capacitary potentials. Such monotone quantities include Willmore and Minkowski-type functionals on Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. In $3$-dimensional manifolds with nonnegative scalar curvature, we also recover the monotonicity of the Hawking mass and its nonlinear potential theoretic counterparts. This unified view is built on a refined analysis of $p$-capacitary potentials. We prove that they strongly converge in $W^{1,q}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ as $p\to 1^+$ to the inverse mean curvature flow and their level sets are curvature varifolds. Finally, we also deduce a Gauss-Bonnet-type theorem for level sets of $p$-capacitary potentials.

Uniqueness on average of large isoperimetric sets in noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature

Let $(M^n,g)$ be a complete Riemannian manifold which is not isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$, has nonnegative Ricci curvature, Euclidean volume growth, and quadratic Riemann curvature decay. We prove that there exists a set $\mathcal{G}\subset (0,\infty)$ with density $1$ at infinity such that for every $V\in \mathcal{G}$ there is a unique isoperimetric set of volume $V$ in $M$; moreover, its boundary is strictly volume preserving stable. The latter result cannot be improved to uniqueness or strict stability for every large volume. Indeed, we construct a complete Riemannian surface satisfying the previous assumptions and with the following additional property: there exist arbitrarily large and diverging intervals $I_n\subset (0,\infty)$ such that isoperimetric sets with volumes $V\in I_n$ exist, but they are neither unique nor do they have strictly volume preserving stable boundaries.

Positive mass and isoperimetry for continuous metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature

This paper deals with quasi-local isoperimetric versions of the positive mass theorem on $3$-manifolds endowed with continuous complete metrics having nonnegative scalar curvature in a suitable weak sense. As a corollary, we derive existence results for isoperimetric sets in such low regularity setting. Our main tool is a new local version of the weak inverse mean curvature flow enjoying $C^0$-stable quantitative estimates.

Quantitative isoperimetric inequalities for classical capillarity problems

We consider capillarity functionals which measure the perimeter of sets contained in a Euclidean half-space assigning a constant weight $\lambda \in (-1,1)$ to the portion of the boundary that touches the boundary of the half-space. Depending on $\lambda$, sets that minimize this capillarity perimeter among those with fixed volume are known to be suitable truncated balls lying on the boundary of the half-space. We first give a new proof based on an ABP-type technique of the sharp isoperimetric inequality for this class of capillarity problems. Next we prove two quantitative versions of the inequality: a first sharp inequality estimates the Fraenkel asymmetry of a competitor with respect to the optimal bubbles in terms of the energy deficit; a second inequality estimates a notion of asymmetry for the part of the boundary of a competitor that touches the boundary of the half-space in terms of the energy deficit. After a symmetrization procedure, the quantitative inequalities follow from a novel combination of a quantitative ABP method with a selection-type argument.

Asymptotic isoperimetry on non collapsed spaces with lower Ricci bounds

This paper studies sharp and rigid isoperimetric comparison theorems and asymptotic isoperimetric properties for small and large volumes on $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. Moreover, we obtain almost regularity theorems formulated in terms of the isoperimetric profile and enhanced consequences at the level of several functional inequalities. Most of our statements are new even in the classical setting of smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds. The synthetic theory plays a key role via compactness and stability arguments.

Łojasiewicz-Simon inequalities for minimal networks: stability and convergence

We investigate stability properties of the motion by curvature of planar networks. We prove Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequalities for the length functional of planar networks with triple junctions. In particular, such an inequality holds for networks with junctions forming angles equal to $\tfrac23π$ that are close in $H^2$-norm to minimal networks, i.e., networks whose edges also have vanishing curvature. The latter inequality bounds a concave power of the difference between length of a minimal network $Γ_*$ and length of a triple junctions network $Γ$ from above by the $L^2$-norm of the curvature of the edges of $Γ$. We apply this result to prove the stability of minimal networks in the sense that a motion by curvature starting from a network sufficiently close in $H^2$-norm to a minimal one exists for all times and smoothly converges. We further rigorously construct an example of a motion by curvature having uniformly bounded curvature that smoothly converges to a degenerate network in infinite time.

Minimizing properties of networks via global and local calibrations

In this note we prove that minimal networks enjoy minimizing properties for the length functional. A minimal network is, roughly speaking, a subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ composed of straight segments joining at triple junctions forming angles equal to $\tfrac23 π$; in particular such objects are just critical points of the length functional a priori. We show that a minimal network $Γ_*$: i) minimizes mass among currents with coefficients in a suitable group having the same boundary of $Γ_*$, ii) identifies the interfaces of a partition of a neighborhood of $Γ_*$ solving the minimal partition problem among partitions with same boundary traces. Consequences and sharpness of such results are discussed. The proofs reduce to rather simple and direct arguments based on the exhibition of (global or local) calibrations associated to the minimal network.

Isoperimetry on manifolds with Ricci bounded below: overview of recent results and methods

We review recent results on the study of the isoperimetric problem on Riemannian manifolds with Ricci lower bounds. We focus on the validity of sharp second order differential inequalities satisfied by the isoperimetric profile of possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds with Ricci lower bounds. We give a self-contained overview of the methods employed for the proof of such result, which exploit modern tools and ideas from nonsmooth geometry. The latter methods are needed for achieving the result even in the smooth setting. Next, we show applications of the differential inequalities of the isoperimetric profile, providing simplified proofs of: the sharp and rigid isoperimetric inequality on manifolds with nonnegative Ricci and Euclidean volume growth, existence of isoperimetric sets for large volumes on manifolds with nonnegative Ricci and Euclidean volume growth, the classical Lévy-Gromov isoperimetric inequality. On the way, we discuss relations of these results and methods with the existing literature, pointing out several open problems.

A survey of the elastic flow of curves and networks

We collect and present in a unified way several results in recent years about the elastic flow of curves and networks, trying to draw the state of the art of the subject. In particular, we give a complete proof of global existence and smooth convergence to critical points of the solution of the elastic flow of closed curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In the last section of the paper we also discuss a list of open problems.

Topological regularity of isoperimetric sets in PI spaces having a deformation property

We prove topological regularity results for isoperimetric sets in PI spaces having a suitable deformation property, which prescribes a control on the increment of the perimeter of sets under perturbations with balls. More precisely, we prove that isoperimetric sets are open, satisfy boundary density estimates and, under a uniform lower bound on the volumes of unit balls, are bounded. Our results apply, in particular, to the class of possibly collapsed $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. As a consequence, the rigidity in the isoperimetric inequality on possibly collapsed $\mathrm{RCD}(0,N)$ spaces with Euclidean volume growth holds without the additional assumption on the boundedness of isoperimetric sets. Our strategy is of interest even in the Euclidean setting, as it simplifies some classical arguments.

Isoperimetric problem and structure at infinity on Alexandrov spaces with nonnegative curvature

In this paper we consider nonnegatively curved finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with a non-collapsing condition, i.e., such that unit balls have volumes uniformly bounded from below away from zero. We study the relation between the isoperimetric profile, the existence of isoperimetric sets, and the asymptotic structure at infinity of such spaces. In this setting, we prove that the following conditions are equivalent: the space has linear volume growth; it is Gromov--Hausdorff asymptotic to one cylinder at infinity; it has uniformly bounded isoperimetric profile; the entire space is a tubular neighborhood of either a line or a ray. Moreover, on a space satisfying any of the previous conditions, we prove existence of isoperimetric sets for sufficiently large volumes, and we characterize the geometric rigidity at the level of the isoperimetric profile. Specializing our study to the $2$-dimensional case, we prove that unit balls have always volumes uniformly bounded from below away from zero, and we prove existence of isoperimetric sets for every volume, characterizing also their topology when the space has no boundary. The proofs exploit a variational approach, and in particular apply to Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and to Euclidean convex bodies. Up to the authors' knowledge, most of the results are new even in these smooth cases.

On the uniqueness of nondegenerate blowups for the motion by curvature of networks

In this note we prove uniqueness of nondegenerate compact blowups for the motion by curvature of planar networks. The proof follows ideas introduced in "Lojasiewicz-Simon inequalities for minimal networks: stability and convergence" for the study of stability properties of critical points of the length functional and it is based on the application of a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality.

The isoperimetric problem on Riemannian manifolds via Gromov-Hausdorff asymptotic analysis

In this paper we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions of any volume in Riemannian manifolds with Ricci bounded below assuming Gromov--Hausdorff asymptoticity to the suitable simply connected model of constant sectional curvature. The previous result is a consequence of a general structure theorem for perimeter-minimizing sequences of sets of fixed volume on noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We show that, without assuming any further hypotheses on the asymptotic geometry, all the mass and the perimeter lost at infinity, if any, are recovered by at most countably many isoperimetric regions sitting in some (possibly nonsmooth) Gromov--Hausdorff limits at infinity. The Gromov--Hausdorff asymptotic analysis allows us to recover and extend different previous existence theorems. While studying the isoperimetric problem in the smooth setting, the nonsmooth geometry naturally emerges, and thus our treatment combines techniques from both the theories.

Sharp isoperimetric comparison on non-collapsed spaces with lower Ricci bounds

This paper studies sharp isoperimetric comparison theorems and sharp dimensional concavity properties of the isoperimetric profile for non smooth spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds, the so-called $N$-dimensional ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathscr{H}^N)$. The absence of most of the classical tools of Geometric Measure Theory and the possible non existence of isoperimetric regions on non compact spaces are handled via an original argument to estimate first and second variation of the area for isoperimetric sets, avoiding any regularity theory, in combination with an asymptotic mass decomposition result of perimeter-minimizing sequences. Most of our statements are new even for smooth, non compact manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds and for Alexandrov spaces with lower sectional curvature bounds. They generalize several results known for compact manifolds, non compact manifolds with uniformly bounded geometry at infinity, and Euclidean convex bodies.

The isoperimetric problem via direct method in noncompact metric measure spaces with lower Ricci bounds

We establish a structure theorem for minimizing sequences for the isoperimetric problem on noncompact $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $(X,\mathsf{d},\mathcal{H}^N)$. Under the sole (necessary) assumption that the measure of unit balls is uniformly bounded away from zero, we prove that the limit of such a sequence is identified by a finite collection of isoperimetric regions possibly contained in pointed Gromov--Hausdorff limits of the ambient space $X$ along diverging sequences of points. The number of such regions is bounded linearly in terms of the measure of the minimizing sequence. The result follows from a new generalized compactness theorem, which identifies the limit of a sequence of sets $E_i\subset X_i$ with uniformly bounded measure and perimeter, where $(X_i,\mathsf{d}_i,\mathcal{H}^N)$ is an arbitrary sequence of $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. An abstract criterion for a minimizing sequence to converge without losing mass at infinity to an isoperimetric set is also discussed. The latter criterion is new also for smooth Riemannian spaces.

Asymptotic convergence of evolving hypersurfaces

If $ψ:M^n\to \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ is a smooth immersed closed hypersurface, we consider the functional $\mathcal{F}_m(ψ) = \int_M 1 + |\nabla^m ν|^2 \, dμ$, where $ν$ is a local unit normal vector along $ψ$, $\nabla$ is the Levi-Civita connection of the Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, with $g$ the pull-back metric induced by the immersion and $μ$ the associated volume measure. We prove that if $m>\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ then the unique globally defined smooth solution to the $L^2$-gradient flow of $\mathcal{F}_m$, for every initial hypersurface, smoothly converges asymptotically to a critical point of $\mathcal{F}_m$, up to diffeomorphisms. The proof is based on the application of a Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for the functional $\mathcal{F}_m$.
