A splitting theorem for capillary graphs under Ricci lower bounds

In this paper, we study capillary graphs defined on a domain $Ω$ of a complete Riemannian manifold $M$, where a graph is said to be capillary if it has constant mean curvature and locally constant Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on $\partial Ω$. Our main result is a splitting theorem both for $Ω$ and for the graph function on a class of manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a corollary, we classify capillary graphs over domains that are globally Lipschitz epigraphs or slabs in a product space $M = N \times \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ has slow volume growth and non-negative Ricci curvature, including the case $M = \mathbb{R}^2,\mathbb{R}^3$. A technical core of the paper is a new gradient estimate for positive CMC graphs on manifolds with Ricci lower bounds.

Recent rigidity results for graphs with prescribed mean curvature

This survey describes some recent rigidity results obtained by the authors for the prescribed mean curvature problem on graphs $u : M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$. Emphasis is put on minimal, CMC and capillary graphs, as well as on graphical solitons for the mean curvature flow, in warped product ambient spaces. A detailed analysis of the mean curvature operator is given, focusing on maximum principles at infinity, Liouville properties, gradient estimates. Among the geometric applications, we mention the Bernstein theorem for positive entire minimal graphs on manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, and a splitting theorem for capillary graphs over an unbounded domain $Ω\subset M$, namely, for CMC graphs satisfying an overdetermined boundary condition.

Stable maximal hypersurfaces in Lorentzian spacetimes

We study the geometry of stable maximal hypersurfaces in a variety of spacetimes satisfying various physically relevant curvature assumptions, for instance the Timelike Convergence Condition (TCC). We characterize stability when the target space has constant sectional curvature as well as give sufficient conditions on the geometry of the ambient spacetime (e.g., the validity of TCC) to ensure stability. Some rigidity results and height estimates are also proven in GRW spacetimes. In the last part of the paper we consider $k$-stability of spacelike hypersurfaces, a concept related to mean curvatures of higher orders.

Spacelike hypersurfaces in standard static spacetimes

In this work we study spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in spatially open standard static spacetimes with complete spacelike slices. Under appropriate lower bounds on the Ricci curvature of the spacetime in directions tangent to the slices, we prove that every complete CMC hypersurface having either bounded hyperbolic angle or bounded height is maximal. Our conclusions follow from general mean curvature estimates for spacelike hypersurfaces. In case where the spacetime is a Lorentzian product with spatial factor of nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvatures bounded below, we also show that a complete maximal hypersurface not intersecting a spacelike slice is itself a slice. This result is obtained from a gradient estimate for parametric maximal hypersurfaces.

On the interplay among maximum principles, compact support principles and Keller-Osserman conditions on manifolds

This paper is about the influence of Geometry on the qualitative behaviour of solutions of quasilinear PDEs on Riemannian manifolds. Motivated by examples arising, among others, from the theory of submanifolds, in particular by the study of entire graphs with prescribed mean curvature, we consider classes of coercive differential inequalities of the form $$ \mathrm{div}\left( \frac{φ(|\nabla u|)}{|\nabla u|} \nabla u\right) \ge b(x)f(u) l(|\nabla u|) \qquad \text{(respectively, $\le$ or $=$)} $$ on domains of a manifold $M$, for suitable $φ,b,f,l$, with emphasis on mean curvature type operators. We investigate the validity of strong maximum principles, compact support principles and Liouville type theorems; in particular, the goal is to identify sharp thresholds, involving curvatures or volume growth of geodesic balls in $M$, to guarantee the above properties under appropriate Keller-Osserman type conditions, and to discuss the geometric reasons behind the existence of such thresholds. The paper also aims to give a unified view of recent results in the literature. The bridge with Geometry is realized by studying the validity of weak and strong maximum principles at infinity, in the spirit of Omori-Yau's Hessian and Laplacian principles and subsequent improvements.

Yamabe type equations with a sign-changing nonlinearity, and the prescribed curvature problem

In this paper, we investigate the prescribed scalar curvature problem on a non-compact Riemannian manifold $(M, \langle \, , \, \rangle)$, namely the existence of a conformal deformation of the metric $\langle \, , \, \rangle$ realizing a given function $\widetilde s(x)$ as its scalar curvature. In particular, the work focuses on the case when $\widetilde s(x)$ changes sign. Our main achievement are two new existence results requiring minimal assumptions on the underlying manifold, and ensuring a control on the stretching factor of the conformal deformation in such a way that the conformally deformed metric be quasi-isometric to the original one. The topological-geometrical requirements we need are all encoded in the spectral properties of the standard and conformal Laplacians of $M$. Our techniques can be extended to investigate the existence of entire positive solutions of quasilinear equations of the type $$ Δ_{p} u + a(x)u^{p-1} - b(x)u^σ= 0 $$ where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian, $σ>p-1>0$, $a,b \in L^\infty_{\mathrm{loc}}(M)$ and $b$ changes sign, and in the process of collecting the material for the proof of our theorems, we have the opportunity to give some new insight on the subcriticality theory for the Schrödinger type operator $$ Q_V' \ : \ φ\longmapsto -Δ_p φ- a(x)|φ|^{p-2}φ. $$ In particular, we prove sharp Hardy-type inequalities in some geometrically relevant cases, notably for minimal submanifolds of the hyperbolic space.

A Schwarz-type lemma for noncompact manifolds with boundary and geometric applications

We prove a Schwarz-type lemma for noncompact manifolds with possibly noncompact boundary. The result is a consequence of a suitable form of the weak maximum principle of independent interest. The paper is enriched with applications to conformal deformations of noncompact manifolds with boundary, among them a generalization of a classical result by Escobar.

Lichnerowicz-type equations on complete manifolds

Under appropriate spectral assumptions we prove two existence results for positive solutions of Lichnerowicz-type equations on complete manifolds. We also give a priori bounds and a comparison result that immediately yields uniqueness for certain classes of solutions. No curvature assumptions are involved in our analysis.

On the role of gradient terms in quasilinear coercive differential inequalities on Carnot Groups

In the sub-Riemannian setting of Carnot groups, this work investigates a-priori estimates and Liouville type theorems for solutions of coercive, quasilinear differential inequalities of the type $$ Δ_{\mathbb{G}}^φu \ge b(x) f(u) l(|\nabla u|). $$ Prototype examples of $Δ_{\mathbb{G}}^φ$ are the (subelliptic) $p$-Laplacian and the mean curvature operator. The main novelty of the present paper is that we allow a dependence on the gradient $l(t)$ that can vanish both as $t \rightarrow 0^+$ and as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. Our results improve on the recent literature and, by means of suitable counterexamples, we show that the range of parameters in the main theorems are sharp.

Analytic and geometric properties of generic Ricci solitons

The aim of this paper is to prove some classification results for generic shrinking Ricci solitons. In particular, we show that every three dimensional generic shrinking Ricci soliton is given by quotients of either $\mathds{S}^3$, $\erre\times\mathds{S}^2$ or $\erre^3$, under some very weak conditions on the vector field $X$ generating the soliton structure. In doing so we introduce analytical tools that could be useful in other settings; for instance we prove that the Omori-Yau maximum principle holds for the $X$-Laplacian on every generic Ricci soliton, without any assumption on $X$.

Conformal Ricci Solitons and related Integrability Conditions

In this paper we introduce, in the Riemannian setting, the notion of conformal Ricci soliton, which includes as particular cases Einstein manifolds, conformal Einstein manifolds and (generic and gradient) Ricci solitons. We provide here some necessary integrability conditions for the existence of these structures that also recover, in the corresponding contexts, those already known in the literature for conformally Einstein manifolds and for gradient Ricci solitons. A crucial tool in our analysis is the construction of some appropriate and highly nontrivial $(0,3)$-tensors related to the geometric structures, that in the special case of gradient Ricci solitons become the celebrated tensor $D$ recently introduced by Cao and Chen. A significant part of our investigation, which has independent interest, is the derivation of a number of commutation rules for covariant derivatives (of functions and tensors) and of transformation laws of some geometric objects under a conformal change of the underlying metric.

On the geometry of gradient Einstein-type manifolds

In this paper we introduce the notion of Einstein-type structure on a Riemannian manifold $\varrg$, unifying various particular cases recently studied in the literature, such as gradient Ricci solitons, Yamabe solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds. We show that these general structures can be locally classified when the Bach tensor is null. In particular, we extend a recent result of Cao and Chen.

A general form of the weak maximum principle and some applications

The aim of this paper is to introduce new forms of the weak and Omori-Yau maximum principles for linear operators, notably for trace type operators, and show their usefulness, for instance, in the context of PDE's and in the theory of hypersurfaces. In the final part of the paper we consider a large class of non-linear operators and we show that our previous results can be appropriately generalized to this case.
