Collective modes in the color flavor locked phase

We study the low energy effective action for the collective modes of the color flavor locked phase of QCD. This phase of matter has long been known to be a superfluid because by picking a phase its order parameter breaks the quark-number $U(1)_B$ symmetry spontaneously. We consider the modes describing fluctuations in the magnitude of the condensate, namely the Higgs mode, and in the phase of the condensate, namely the Nambu-Goldstone (or Anderson-Bogoliubov) mode associated with the breaking of $U(1)_B$. By employing as microscopic theory the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model, we reproduce known results for the Lagrangian of the Nambu-Goldstone field to the leading order in the chemical potential and extend such results evaluating corrections due to the gap parameter. Moreover, we determine the interaction terms between the Higgs and the Nambu-Goldstone field. This study paves the way for a more reliable study of various dissipative processes in rotating compact stars with a quark matter core in the color flavor locked phase.

Magnetic Susceptibility of the Quark Condensate and Polarization from Chiral Models

We compute the magnetic susceptibility of the quark condensate and the polarization of quarks at zero temperature and in a uniform magnetic background. Our theoretical framework consists of two chiral models that allow to treat self-consistently the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry: the linear $σ-$model coupled to quarks, dubbed quark-meson model, and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We also perform analytic estimates of the same quantities within the renormalized quark-meson model, both in the regimes of weak and strong fields. Our numerical results are in agreement with the recent literature; moreover, we confirm previous Lattice findings, related to the saturation of the polarization at large fields.

Chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement in strong magnetic fields

I review recent results obtained within chiral effective models, on the phase structure of hot quark matter in a strong magnetic background. After a brief introduction, I focus on the results obtained within two chiral models improved with the Polyakov loop. The models differ for the content of interactions, but both of them are tuned to reproduce Lattice QCD thermodynamics at zero and imaginary chemical potential. One of them takes into account an explicit Polyakov loop dependence of the coupling; the other one neglects this contribution, but takes into account multi-quark interactions. A comparison between the phase diagrams of the two models is presented.

Non-topological Domain Walls in a Model with Broken Supersymmetry

We study non-topological, charged planar walls (Q-walls) in the context of a particle physics model with supersymmetry broken by low-energy gauge mediation. Analytical properties are derived within the flat-potential approximation for the flat-direction raising potential, while a numerical study is performed using the full two-loop supersymmetric potential. We analyze the energetics of finite-size Q-walls and compare them to Q-balls, non-topological solitons possessing spherical symmetry and arising in the same supersymmetric model. This allow us to draw a phase diagram in the charge-transverse length plane, which shows a region where Q-wall solutions are more stable than Q-balls.

Deconfinement and Chiral Symmetry Restoration in a Strong Magnetic Background

We perform a model study of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration in a strong magnetic background. We use a Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop, taking into account a possible dependence of the coupling on the Polyakov loop expectation value, as suggested by the recent literature. Our main result is that, within this model, the deconfinement and chiral crossovers of QCD in strong magnetic field are entangled even at the largest value of $eB$ considered here, namely $eB=30 m_π^2$ (that is, $B \approx 6\times 10^{15}$ Tesla). The amount of split that we measure is, at this value of $eB$, of the order of 2%. We also study briefly the role of the 8-quark term on the entanglement of the two crossovers. We then compare the phase diagram of this model with previous results, as well as with available Lattice data.

Dressed Polyakov loop and phase diagram of hot quark matter under magnetic field

We evaluate the dressed Polyakov loop for hot quark matter in strong magnetic field. To compute the finite temperature effective potential, we use the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with eight-quark interactions taken into account. The bare quark mass is adjusted in order to reproduce the physical value of the vacuum pion mass. Our results show that the dressed Polyakov loop is very sensitive to the strenght of the magnetic field, and it is capable to capture both the deconfinement crossover and the chiral crossover. Besides, we compute self-consistently the phase diagram of the model. We find a tiny split of the two aforementioned crossovers as the strength of the magnetic field is increased. Concretely, for the largest value of magnetic field investigated here, $eB=19 m_π^2$, the split is of the order of $10\%$. A qualitative comparison with other effective models and recent Lattice results is also performed.

Chiral magnetic effect in the PNJL model

We study the two-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop (PNJL model) in the presence of a strong magnetic field and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ which mimics the effect of imbalanced chirality due to QCD instanton and/or sphaleron transitions. Firstly we focus on the properties of chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement crossover under the strong magnetic field. Then we discuss the role of $μ_5$ on the phase structure. Finally the chirality charge, electric current, and their susceptibility, which are relevant to the Chiral Magnetic Effect, are computed in the model.

Dielectric correction to the Chiral Magnetic Effect

We derive an electric current density $j_{em}$ in the presence of a magnetic field $B$ and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. We show that $j_{em}$ has not only the anomaly-induced term $\propto μ_5 B$ (i.e. Chiral Magnetic Effect) but also a non-anomalous correction which comes from interaction effects and expressed in terms of the susceptibility. We find the correction characteristically dependent on the number of quark flavors. The numerically estimated correction turns out to be a minor effect on heavy-ion collisions but can be tested by the lattice QCD simulation.

Probing the QCD vacuum with an abelian chromomagnetic field: A study within an effective model

We study the response of the QCD vacuum to an external abelian chromomagnetic field in the framework of a non local Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop. We use the Lattice results on the deconfinement temperature of the pure gauge theory to compute the same quantity in the presence of dynamical quarks. We find a linear relationship between the deconfinement temperature with quarks and the squared root of the applied field strength, $gH$, in qualitative (and to some extent also quantitative) agreement with existing Lattice calculations. On the other hand, we find a discrepancy on the approximate chiral symmetry restoration: while Lattice results suggest the deconfinement and the chiral restoration remain linked even at non-zero value of $gH$, our results are consistent with a scenario in which the two transitions are separated as $gH$ is increased.

On the critical end point of the QCD and the NJL model phase diagrams

In this talk I compare the knowledge on the critical end point of the QCD phase diagram grasped from lattice calculations, with that obtained from Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model computations. The original publication is available at http://www.sif.it/SIF/en/portal/journals

Equilibrium sequences of non rotating and rapidly rotating crystalline color superconducting hybrid stars

The three-flavor crystalline color-superconducting (CCS) phase of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is a candidate phase for the ground state of cold matter at moderate densities above the density of the deconfinement phase transition. Apart from being a superfluid, the CCS phase has properties of a solid, such as a lattice structure and a shear modulus, and hence the ability to sustain multipolar deformations in gravitational equilibrium. We construct equilibrium configurations of hybrid stars composed of nuclear matter at low, and CCS quark matter at high, densities. Phase equilibrium between these phases is possible only for rather stiff equations of state of nuclear matter and large couplings in the effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian describing the CCS state. We identify a new branch of stable CCS hybrid stars within a broad range of central densities which, depending on the details of the equations of state, either bifurcate from the nuclear sequence of stars when the central density exceeds that of the deconfinement phase transition or form a new family of configurations separated from the purely nuclear sequence by an instability region. The maximum masses of our non-rotating hybrid configurations are consistent with the presently available astronomical bounds. The sequences of hybrid configurations that rotate near the mass-shedding limit are found to be more compact and thus support substantially larger spins than their same mass nuclear counterparts.

A diagrammatic derivation of the meson effective masses in the neutral color-flavor-locked phase of Quantum Chromodynamics

We offer a diagrammatic derivation of the effective masses of the axial flavor excitations in the electrical and color neutral CFL phase of QCD. In particular we concentrate on the excitations with the quantum numbers of the kaons: we show how their effective chemical potentials, responsible of their Bose-Einstein condensation and found previously on the basis of pure symmetry arguments, arise at the microscopic level by loop effects. We perform also the numerical evaluation of the relevant loops in the whole CFL regime $M_s^2/2μΔ\leqslant 1$, showing the existence of the enhancement of the kaon condensation with respect to the lowest order result. Finally we discuss the role of electrical and color neutrality in the microscopic calculation.

Evaluating the phase diagram of superconductors with asymmetric spin populations

The phase diagram of a non-relativistic fermionic system with imbalanced state populations interacting via a short-range S-wave attractive interaction is analyzed in the mean field approximation. We determine the energetically favored state for different values of the mismatch between the two Fermi spheres in the weak and strong coupling regime considering both homogeneous and non-homogeneous superconductive states. We find that the homogeneous superconductive phase persists for values of the population imbalance that increase with increasing coupling strength. In the strong coupling regime and for large population differences the energetically stable homogeneous phase is characterized by one gapless mode. We also find that the inhomogeneous superconductive phase characterized by the condensate $Δ({\bf x}) \sim Δ~\exp{(i \bf{q \cdot x})}$ is energetically favored in a range of values of the chemical potential mismatch that shrinks to zero in the strong coupling regime.

Rheological Behavior of Microemulsions

We study the stationary and transient behaviors of the microemulsion phase subjected to a shear flow. The system is described by a diffusion-convective equation which generalizes the usual Cahn-Hilliard equation. Non-linear terms are treated in a self-consistent approximation. Shear, first and second normal stresses are calculated as momenta of the structure factor. Shear thinning is observed in stationary conditions. After a newtonian regime at small values of the shear rate, the excess viscosity decreases when the shear rate becomes of the order of the inverse of the relaxation time of the system without flow. In transient regimes, when the flow is applied starting from a quiescent state, we find that the shear stress reaches a maximum before decreasing to a constant value.
