Fixed-phase Resonance Tracking for Fast Nonlinear Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy

Nonlinear Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (NRUS) experiments that rely on repeated sampling of resonance curves are inherently sensitive to measurement protocol due to evolution of material parameters caused by fast and slow dynamic effects. We introduce a model-assisted discrete-time resonance tracking method that maintains a system at its instantaneous resonance condition without the need to acquire full frequency sweeps. Resonance is defined through a prescribed phase relation between excitation and response, and the excitation frequency is iteratively updated using a linearized frequency--phase model. The procedure allows controlled suppression of transient wave buildup using optional feedforward correction with respect to an external control parameter. The method is demonstrated on NRUS and performing a conditioning-relaxation protocol, both conducted on a sandstone bar, providing estimates of resonance frequency and damping. Comparison with conventional approaches shows that measurement speed and mode stability significantly influence the inferred nonlinear indicators. The proposed framework is not limited to nonlinear acoustics and can be applied to arbitrary resonant systems with slowly evolving parameters.

Monitoring Gallium-Induced Damage in Aluminum Alloys Using Nonlinear Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy

Nonlinear Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy is a nonlinear ultrasonic technique which allows monitoring small variations in the microstructure of a medium and thus allows materials characterization and monitoring of damage evolution. Application of the technique to monitor Liquid Metal Embrittlement induced by gallium penetration in aluminum is presented here. To define indicators of material degradation, data treatment using the Singular Value Decomposition approach is introduced and discussed. Experimental results show that nonlinear properties are correlated with the state of the liquid metal in the solid matrix, allowing to identify different phases in the process of gallium diffusion along grain boundaries and within the bulk of individual grains. Furthermore, the evolution of gallium damage allows to study correlations between nonlinear, fast and slow dynamic properties.

A frequency-preserving and time-invariant metamaterial-based nonlinear acoustic diode

We present the realization of an acoustic diode or rectifier, exploiting symmetry-breaking nonlinear effects like harmonic generation and wave mixing and the filtering capabilities of metamaterials. The essential difference and advantage compared with previous acoustic diode realizations is that the present is simultaneously a time invariant, frequency preserving and switchable device. This allows its application also as an on-off or amplitude-tuning switch. We evaluate its properties by means of a numerical study and demonstrate its feasibility in a preliminary experimental realization. This work may provide new opportunities for the practical realization of structural components with one-way wave propagation properties.

Proof of concept for an ultrasensitive meta-device to detect and localize nonlinear elastic sources

The appearance of nonlinear effects in elastic wave propagation is one of the most reliable and sensitive indicators of the onset of material damage. However, these effects are usually very small and can be detected only using cumbersome digital signal processing techniques. Here, we propose and experimentally validate an alternative approach, using the filtering and focusing properties of elastic metamaterials to naturally select the higher harmonics generated by nonlinear effects and to increase their signal-to noise ratios, enabling the realization of time-reversal procedures for nonlinear elastic source detection. The proposed device demonstrates its potential as an efficient, compact, portable, passive apparatus for nonlinear elastic wave sensing and damage detection.
