Pole N-flation

A second order pole in the scalar kinetic term can lead to a class of inflation models with universal predictions referred to as pole inflation or $α$-attractors. While this kinetic structure is ubiquitous in supergravity effective field theories, realising a consistent UV complete model in e.g. string theory is a non-trivial task. For one, one expects quantum corrections arising in the vicinity of the pole which may spoil the typical attractor dynamics. As a conservative estimate of the range of validity of supergravity models of pole inflation we employ the weak gravity conjecture (WGC). We find that this constrains the accessible part of the inflationary plateau by limiting the decay constant of the axion partner. For the original single complex field models, the WGC does not even allow the inflaton to reach the inflationary plateau region. We analyze if evoking the assistance of $N$ scalar fields from the open string moduli helps addressing these problems. Pole $N$-flation could improve radiative control by reducing the required range of each individual field. However, the WGC bound prohibiting pole inflation for a single such field persists even for a collective motion of $N$ such scalars if we impose the sublattice WGC. Finally, we outline steps towards an embedding of pole N-flation in type IIB string theory on fibred Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Swampland Distance Conjecture, Inflation and $α$-attractors

The Swampland Distance Conjecture (SDC) constraints the dynamics emerging at infinite distances in field space of any effective field theory consistent with quantum gravity. It provides a relation between the cut-off in energies and the field range which, as we show, in the context of inflation it yields a universal upper bound on the inflaton excursion in terms of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, measured at typical CMB scales. In this note, we investigate the interplay between the SDC and the emergent inflationary physics around infinite distances singularities in string theory, with a special look at its significance for the $α$-attractor scenario of inflation. We show that the conjecture itself suggests that inflation may arise as an infinite distance phenomenon with the asymptotic kinetic structure typical of $α$-attractors. Furthermore, we argue that a proper string realisation of these cosmological models in Calabi-Yau manifolds should occur around infinite field distance singularities. However, such constructions typically imply that inflation should not take place in the limit where the inflaton kinetic term develops a pole but rather in the opposite regime. Finally, we study the constraints that the SDC poses on $α$-attractors and show that they still leave considerable room for compatibility with observations.

dS Vacua and the Swampland

In this note we revisit some of the recent 10d and 4d arguments suggesting that uplifting of supersymmetric AdS vacua leads to flattening of the potential, preventing formation of dS vacua. We explain why the corresponding 10d approach is inconclusive and requires considerable modifications. We also show that while the flattening effects may occur for some extreme values of the parameters, they do not prevent the formation of dS vacua within the range of validity of the 4d KKLT models. The KL version of the KKLT scenario based on a racetrack superpotential requires parametrically small uplifting, which is not affected by flattening. We show that this scenario is compatible with the weak gravity conjecture for a broad choice of parameters of the KL model. Thus, the results of our analysis do not support the recent swampland conjecture.

4d models of dS uplift in KKLT

It was shown in arXiv:1808.09428 that the modified 4d version of the KKLT model proposed in arXiv:1707.08678 is inconsistent for large values of the parameter $c$ advocated in arXiv:1707.08678, since there is a point in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ vanishes. The authors responded with yet another modification of the 4d KKLT model arXiv:1809.06618. However, for large $c$, this model suffers from an even worse problem: not only is there a point in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ vanishes, there is also a region in the moduli space where $|D_SW|^2$ is negative. Meanwhile for small $c$ these models have dS vacua. We construct improved models, which are fully consistent for all values of parameters, just as the original version of the KKLT model using a nilpotent superfield. These models have a family of dS vacua for a broad range of parameter values. Thus, the results of the analysis of all presently available consistent generalizations of the 4d KKLT model, in the domain of their validity, confirm the existence of dS vacua in the KKLT scenario.

de Sitter Vacua with a Nilpotent Superfield

We study the arguments given in [1] which suggest that the uplifting procedure in the KKLT construction is not valid. First we show that the modification of the SUSY breaking sector of the nilpotent superfield, as proposed in [1], is not consistent with non-linearly realized local supersymmetry of de Sitter supergravity. Keeping this issue aside, we also show that the corresponding bosonic potential does actually describe de Sitter uplifting.

Moduli Backreaction on Inflationary Attractors

We investigate the interplay between moduli dynamics and inflation, focusing on the KKLT-scenario and cosmological $α$-attractors. General couplings between these sectors can induce a significant backreaction and potentially destroy the inflationary regime; however, we demonstrate that this generically does not happen for $α$-attractors. Depending on the details of the superpotential, the volume modulus can either be stable during the entire inflationary trajectory, or become tachyonic at some point and act as a waterfall field, resulting in a sudden end of inflation. In the latter case there is a universal supersymmetric minimum where the scalars end up, preventing the decompactification scenario. The gravitino mass is independent from the inflationary scale with no fine-tuning of the parameters. The observational predictions conform to the universal value of attractors, fully compatible with the Planck data, with possibly a capped number of e-folds due to the interplay with moduli.

Inflation from Nilpotent Kähler Corrections

We develop a new class of supergravity cosmological models where inflation is induced by terms in the Kähler potential which mix a nilpotent superfield $S$ with a chiral sector $Φ$. As the new terms are non-(anti)holomorphic, and hence cannot be removed by a Kähler transformation, these models are intrinsically Kähler potential driven. Such terms could arise for example due to a backreaction of an anti-D3 brane on the string theory bulk geometry. We show that this mechanism is very general and allows for a unified description of inflation and dark energy, with controllable SUSY breaking at the vacuum. When the internal geometry of the bulk field is hyperbolic, we prove that small perturbative Kähler corrections naturally lead to $α$-attractor behaviour, with inflationary predictions in excellent agreement with the latest Planck data

Inflation, Universality and Attractors

In this PhD thesis, we investigate generic features of inflation which are strictly related to fundamental aspects of UV-physics scenarios, such as string theory or supergravity. After a short introduction to standard and inflationary cosmology, we present our research findings. On the one hand, we show that focusing on universality properties of inflation can yield surprisingly stringent bounds on its dynamics. This approach allows us to identify the regime where the inflationary field range is uniquely determined by both the tensor-to-scalar ratio and the spectral index. Then, we derive a novel field-range bound, which is two orders of magnitude stronger than the original one derived by Lyth. On the other hand, we discuss the embedding of inflation in supergravity and prove that non-trivial hyperbolic Kähler geometries induce an attractor for the inflationary observables: the spectral tilt tends automatically to the center of the Planck dome whereas the amount of primordial gravitational waves is directly controlled by curvature of the internal manifold. We identify the origin of this attractor mechanism in the so-called $α$-scale supergravity model. Finally, we show how the inclusion of a nilpotent sector, allowing for a unified description of inflation and dark energy, implies an enhancement of the attractor nature of the theory. The main results of this thesis have been already published elsewhere. However, here we pay special attention to present them in a comprehensive way and provide the reader with the necessary background.

Cosmological $α$-Attractors and de Sitter Landscape

We provide a unified description of cosmological $α$-attractors and late-time acceleration, in excellent agreement with the latest Planck data. Our construction involves two superfields playing distinctive roles: one is the dynamical field and its evolution determines inflation and dark energy, the other is nilpotent and responsible for a landscape of vacua and supersymmetry breaking. We prove that the attractor nature of the theory is enhanced when combining the two sectors: cosmological attractors are very stable with respect to any possible value of the cosmological constant and, interestingly, to any generic coupling of the inflationary sector with the field responsible for uplifting. Finally, as related result, we show how specific couplings generate an arbitrary inflaton potential in a supergravity framework with varying Kahler curvature.

Cosmological Attractors from $α$-Scale Supergravity

The Planck value of the spectral index can be interpreted as $n_s = 1 - 2/N$ in terms of the number of e-foldings $N$. An appealing explanation for this phenomenological observation is provided by $α$-attractors: the inflationary predictions of these supergravity models are fully determined by the curvature of the Kahler manifold. We provide a novel formulation of $α$-attractors which only involves a single chiral superfield. Our construction involves a natural deformation of no-scale models, and employs these to construct a De Sitter plateau with an exponential fall-off. Finally, we show how analogous structures with a flat Kahler geometry arise as a singular limit of such $α$-scale models.

The Lyth Bound of Inflation with a Tilt

We provide strong evidence for universality of the inflationary field range: given an accurate measurement of $(n_s,r)$, one can infer $Δϕ$ in a model-independent way in the sub-Planckian regime for a range of universality classes of inflationary models. Both the tensor-to-scalar ratio as well as the spectral tilt are essential for the field range. Given the Planck constraints on $n_s$, the Lyth bound is strengthened by two orders of magnitude: whereas the original bound gives a sub-Planckian field range for $r \lesssim 2 \cdot 10^{-3}$, we find that $n=0.96$ brings this down to $r \lesssim 2 \cdot 10^{-5}$.

Inflation and Dark Energy with a Single Superfield

We discuss the possibility to construct supergravity models with a single superfield describing inflation as well as the tiny cosmological constant $V \sim 10^{-120}$. One could expect that the simplest way to do it is to study models with a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum and then slightly uplift them. However, due to the recently proven no-go theorem, such a tiny uplifting cannot be achieved by a small modification of the parameters of the theory. We illustrate this general result by investigation of models with a single chiral superfield recently proposed by Ketov and Terada. We show that the addition of a small constant or a linear term to the superpotential of a model with a stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum converts it to an AdS vacuum, which results in a rapid cosmological collapse. One can avoid this problem and uplift a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum to a dS vacuum with $V_{0}\sim 10^{-120}$ without violating the no-go theorem by making these extra terms large enough. However, we show that this leads to a strong supersymmetry breaking in the uplifted vacua.

Inflation, de Sitter Landscape and Super-Higgs effect

We continue developing cosmological models involving nilpotent chiral superfields, which provide a simple unified description of inflation and the current acceleration of the universe in the supergravity context. We describe here a general class of models with a positive cosmological constant at the minimum of the potential, such that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in the direction of the nilpotent superfield $S$. In the unitary gauge, these models have a simple action where all highly non-linear fermionic terms of the classical Volkov-Akulov action disappear. We present masses for bosons and fermions in these theories. By a proper choice of parameters in this class of models, one can fit any possible set of the inflationary parameters $n_{s}$ and $r$, a broad range of values of the vacuum energy $V_{0}$, which plays the role of the dark energy, and achieve a controllable level of supersymmetry breaking. This can be done without introducing light moduli, such as Polonyi fields, which often lead to cosmological problems in phenomenological supergravity.

Can CMB data constrain the inflationary field range?

We study to what extent the spectral index $n_s$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ determine the field excursion $Δϕ$ during inflation. We analyse the possible degeneracy of $Δϕ$ by comparing three broad classes of inflationary models, with different dependence on the number of e-foldings $N$, to benchmark models of chaotic inflation with monomial potentials. The classes discussed cover a large set of inflationary single field models. We find that the field range is not uniquely determined for any value of $(n_s, r)$; one can have the same predictions as chaotic inflation and a very different $Δϕ$. Intriguingly, we find that the field range cannot exceed an upper bound that appears in different classes of models. Finally, $Δϕ$ can even become sub-Planckian, but this requires to go beyond the single-field slow-roll paradigm.

Kahler potentials for Planck inflation

We assess which Kahler potentials in supergravity lead to viable single-field inflationary models that are consistent with Planck. We highlight the role of symmetries, such as shift, Heisenberg and supersymmetry, in these constructions. Also the connections to string theory are pointed out. Finally, we discuss a supergravity model for arbitrary inflationary potentials that is suitable for open string inflation and generalize it to the case of closed string inflation. Our model includes the recently discussed supergravity reformulation of the Starobinsky model of inflation as well as an interesting alternative with comparable predictions.

Quantum mechanics in fractional and other anomalous spacetimes

We formulate quantum mechanics in spacetimes with real-order fractional geometry and more general factorizable measures. In spacetimes where coordinates and momenta span the whole real line, Heisenberg's principle is proven and the wave-functions minimizing the uncertainty are found. In spite of the fact that ordinary time and spatial translations are broken and the dynamics is not unitary, the theory is in one-to-one correspondence with a unitary one, thus allowing us to employ standard tools of analysis. These features are illustrated in the examples of the free particle and the harmonic oscillator. While fractional (and the more general anomalous-spacetime) free models are formally indistinguishable from ordinary ones at the classical level, at the quantum level they differ both in the Hilbert space and for a topological term fixing the classical action in the path integral formulation. Thus, all non-unitarity in fractional quantum dynamics is encoded in a contribution depending only on the initial and final state.

Fractional and noncommutative spacetimes

We establish a mapping between fractional and noncommutative spacetimes in configuration space. Depending on the scale at which the relation is considered, there arise two possibilities. For a fractional spacetime with log-oscillatory measure, the effective measure near the fundamental scale determining the log-period coincides with the non-rotation-invariant but cyclicity-preserving measure of κ-Minkowski. At scales larger than the log-period, the fractional measure is averaged and becomes a power-law with real exponent. This can be also regarded as the cyclicity-inducing measure in a noncommutative spacetime defined by a certain nonlinear algebra of the coordinates, which interpolates between κ-Minkowski and canonical spacetime. These results are based upon a braiding formula valid for any nonlinear algebra which can be mapped onto the Heisenberg algebra.
