Dissipation-Induced Superradiance in a Non-Markovian Open Dicke Model

We consider the Dicke model, describing an ensemble of $N$ quantum spins interacting with a cavity field, and study how the coupling to a non-Markovian environment with power-law spectrum changes the physics of superradiant phase transition. Quite remarkably we find that dissipation can induce, rather than suppress, the ordered phase, a result which is in striking contrast with both thermal and Markovian quantum baths. We interpret this dissipation-induced superradiance as a genuine dissipative quantum phase transition that exists even at finite $N$ due to the coupling with the bath modes and whose nature and critical properties strongly depend on the spectral features of the non-Markovian environment.

Transient Loschmidt Echo in Quenched Ising Chains

We study the response to sudden local perturbations of highly excited Quantum Ising Spin Chains. The key quantity encoding this response is the overlap between time-dependent wave functions, which we write as a two-times Loschmidt echo. Its asymptotics at long time differences contains crucial information about the structure of the highly excited non-equilibrium environment induced by the quench. We compute the Echo perturbatively for a weak local quench but for arbitrarily large global quench, using a cumulant expansion. Our perturbative results suggest that the Echo decays exponentially, rather than power law as in the low-energy Orthogonality Catastrophe, a further example of quench-induced decoherence already found in the case of quenched Luttinger Liquids. The emerging decoherence scale is set by the strenght of the local potential and the bulk excitation energy.

Many-Body Quantum Electrodynamics Networks: Non-Equilibrium Condensed Matter Physics with Light

We review recent developments concerning non-equilibrium quantum dynamics and many-body physics with light, in superconducting circuits and Josephson analogues. We start with quantum impurity models summarizing the effect of dissipation and of driving the system. We mention theoretical and experimental efforts to characterize these non-equilibrium quantum systems. We show how Josephson junction systems can implement the equivalent of the Kondo effect with microwave photons. The Kondo effect is characterized by a renormalized light-frequency and a peak in the Rayleigh elastic transmission of a photon. We also address the physics of hybrid systems comprising mesoscopic quantum dot devices coupled to an electromagnetic resonator. Then, we discuss extensions to Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) Networks allowing to engineer the Jaynes-Cummings lattice and Rabi lattice models. This opens the door to novel many-body physics with light out of equilibrium, in relation with the Mott-superfluid transition observed with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. Then, we summarize recent theoretical predictions for realizing topological phases with light. Synthetic gauge fields and spin-orbit couplings have been successfully implemented with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices --- using time-dependent Floquet perturbations periodic in time, for example --- as well as in photonic lattice systems. Finally, we discuss the Josephson effect related to Bose-Hubbard models in ladder and two-dimensional geometries. The Bose-Hubbard model is related to the Jaynes-Cummings lattice model in the large detuning limit between light and matter. In the presence of synthetic gauge fields, we show that Meissner currents subsist in an insulating Mott phase.

Transport Across an Impurity in One Dimensional Quantum Liquids Far From Equilibrium

We study the effect of a single impurity on the transport properties of a one dimensional quantum liquid highly excited away from its ground state by a sudden quench of the bulk interaction. In particular we compute the time dependent dc current to leading order in the impurity potential, using bosonization and starting both from the limit of a uniform system and from the one of two decoupled semi-infinite systems. Our results reveal that the nonequilibrium excitation of bulk modes induced by the global quench has important effects on the conductor-insulator quantum phase transition, which turns into a crossover for any small quench amplitude. In addition, the dynamics of the current displays a faster decay towards the steady-state as compared to the equilibrium case, a signature of quench-induced decoherence.

Tunable Hybrid Quantum Electrodynamics from Non-Linear Electron Transport

Recent advances in quantum electronics have allowed to engineer hybrid nano-devices comprising on chip a microwave electromagnetic resonator coupled to an artificial atom, a quantum dot. These systems realize novel platforms to explore non-equilibrium quantum impurity physics with light and matter. Coupling the quantum dot system to reservoir leads (source and drain) produces an electronic current as well as dissipation when applying a bias voltage across the system. Focusing on a standard model of biased quantum dot coupled to a photon mode we elucidate the signatures of the electronic correlations in the phase of the transmitted microwave signal. In addition, we illustrate the effect of the electronic degrees of freedom on the photon field, giving rise to non-linearities, damping and dissipation, and discuss how to control these effects by means of gate and bias voltages.

Transient Orthogonality Catastrophe in a Time Dependent Nonequilibrium Environment

We study the response of a highly-excited time dependent quantum many-body state to a sudden local perturbation, a sort of orthogonality catastrophe problem in a transient non-equilibrium environment. To this extent we consider, as key quantity, the overlap between time dependent wave-functions, that we write in terms of a novel two-time correlator generalizing the standard Loschmidt Echo. We discuss its physical meaning, general properties, and its connection with experimentally measurable quantities probed through non-equilibrium Ramsey interferometry schemes. Then we present explicit calculations for a one dimensional interacting Fermi system brought out of equilibrium by a sudden change of the interaction, and perturbed by the switching on of a local static potential. We show that different scattering processes give rise to remarkably different behaviors at long times, quite opposite from the equilibrium situation. In particular, while the forward scattering contribution retains its power law structure even in the presence of a large non-equilibrium perturbation, with an exponent that is strongly affected by the transient nature of the bath, the backscattering term is a source of non-linearity which generates an exponential decay in time of the Loschmidt Echo, reminiscent of an effective thermal behavior.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics Across an Impurity Quantum Critical Point

Whether a small quantum mechanical system is able to equilibrate with its environment once an external local perturbation drives it out of thermal equilibrium is a central question which cuts across many different fields of science. Here we consider such a problem for a correlated quantum impurity coupled to a fermionic reservoir and driven out of equilibrium by local quantum quenches such as those recently realized in optical absorption experiments on single quantum dots. We argue that equilibration in this problem is deeply connected to the occurrence of Kondo Effect at low energy and that a highly non trivial dynamical behavior may emerge whenever a local quantum critical point intrudes between a conventional Kondo screened phase and a Kondo unscreened one. We discuss this issue in the context of the Anderson Impurity model coupled to a pseudo-gap reservoir by using a correlated time dependent variational wave function that is able to qualitatively describe this physics.

Localization and Glassy Dynamics Of Many-Body Quantum Systems

When classical systems fail to explore their entire configurational space, intriguing macroscopic phenomena like aging and glass formation may emerge. Also closed quanto-mechanical systems may stop wandering freely around the whole Hilbert space, even if they are initially prepared into a macroscopically large combination of eigenstates. Here, we report numerical evidences that the dynamics of strongly interacting lattice bosons driven sufficiently far from equilibrium can be trapped into extremely long-lived inhomogeneous metastable states. The slowing down of incoherent density excitations above a threshold energy, much reminiscent of a dynamical arrest on the verge of a glass transition, is identified as the key feature of this phenomenon. We argue that the resulting long-lived inhomogeneities are responsible for the lack of thermalization observed in large systems. Such a rich phenomenology could be experimentally uncovered upon probing the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of conveniently prepared quantum states of trapped cold atoms which we hereby suggest.

Time-Dependent Mean Field Theory for Quench Dynamics in correlated electron systems

A simple and very flexible variational approach to the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics in strongly correlated electron systems is introduced through a time-dependent Gutzwiller wavefunction. As an application, we study the simple case of a sudden change of the interaction in the fermionic Hubbard model and find at the mean field level an extremely rich behaviour. In particular, a dynamical transition between small and large quantum quench regimes is found to occur at half-filling, in accordance with the analysis of Eckstein {\sl et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 103}, 056403 (2009), obtained by dynamical mean field theory, that turns into a crossover at any finite doping.

Real-Time Dynamics in Quantum Impurity Models with Diagrammatic Monte Carlo

We extend the recently developed real-time Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method, in its hybridization expansion formulation, to the full Kadanoff-Baym-Keldysh contour. This allows us to study real-time dynamics in correlated impurity models starting from an arbitrary, even interacting, initial density matrix. As a proof of concept we apply the algorithm to study the non equilibrium dynamics after a local quantum quench in the Anderson Impurity Model. Being a completely general approach to real-time dynamics in quantum impurity models it can be used as a solver for Non Equilibrium Dynamical Mean Field Theory.
