Lorentz violation in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

We propose a correspondence between the description of emergent Lorentz symmetry in condensed-matter systems and the established general effective field theory for Lorentz violation in fundamental theories of spacetime and matter. This correspondence has potential implications in both directions. We illustrate the proposal by investigating its consequences for the spectral and transport properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Particular realizations of this framework give rise to Dirac nodal spectra with nodal lines and rings. We demonstrate a bulk-boundary correspondence between bulk topological invariants and drumhead surface states of these Dirac nodal semimetals. We calculate their transport coefficients in leading-order perturbation theory, thereby characterizing the unconventional electromagnetic response due to small deviations from emergent Lorentz invariance. Some prospective future applications of the correspondence are outlined.

Effects of CPT-odd terms of dimensions three and five on electromagnetic propagation in continuous matter

In this work we study how CPT-odd Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw (MCFJ) electrodynamics as well as a dimension-5 extension of it affect the optical activity of continuous media. The starting point is dimension-3 MCFJ electrodynamics in matter whose modified Maxwell equations, permittivity tensor, and dispersion relations are recapitulated. Corresponding refractive indices are achieved in terms of the frequency and the vector-valued background field. For a purely timelike background, the refractive indices are real. Their associated propagation modes are circularly polarized and exhibit birefringence. For a purely spacelike background, one refractive index is always real and the other can be complex. The circularly polarized propagating modes may exhibit birefringence and dichroism (associated with absorption). Subsequently, we examine a dimension-five MCFJ-type electrodynamics, previously scrutinized in the literature, in a continuous medium. Following the same procedure, we find the refractive indices from a sixth-order dispersion equation. For a purely timelike background, three distinct refractive indices are obtained, one of them being real and two being complex. They are associated with two circularly polarized propagating modes that exhibit birefringence or dichroism, depending on the frequency range. Scenarios of propagation and absorption analogous to those found in dispersive dielectrics are also observed for spacelike background configurations. We conclude by comparing the dimension-three and five results and by emphasizing the richer phenomenology of the propagating modes in the higher-derivative model. Our results are applicable in the realm of Weyl semimetals.

Implications of $\textit{SU}(2)_L$ gauge invariance for constraints on Lorentz violation

Lorentz invariance is one of the basic ingredients of quantum field theories and violations of it are stringently constrained experimentally. Therefore, the possibility of Lorentz violation (LV) is usually realized at very high energy scales, resulting in a strong suppression of it (by the new scale) in experiments. The Standard-Model Extension (SME) parameterizes LV in a model-independent way, respecting $SU(2)_L$ gauge invariance. This means, e.g., that the neutrino and charged-lepton sectors are linked to each other. Hence, on the one hand, any modification of neutrino properties simultaneously gives rise to effects for charged leptons, which is why the tight limits on flavour-off-diagonal LV for neutrinos imply new bounds on modifications of charged leptons. On the other hand, LV for left-handed charged leptons implies LV for neutrinos. Since LV modifications of the charged-lepton sector are, in general, even more constraining than effects in the flavour-diagonal neutrino sector, we obtain novel tight bounds on LV in the latter. Subsequently, we apply the same approach to an analysis of time-of-flight data for neutrinos (detected by IceCube) and photons from gamma ray bursts where discrepancies have been observed. Our finding is that an explanation of the arrival time difference between neutrino and photon events by dim-5 operators in the neutrino sector would lead to unacceptably large LV effects in the charged-lepton sector.

Hamiltonian formulation of an effective modified gravity with nondynamical background fields

The current paper is dedicated to developing a (3+1) decomposition for the minimal gravitational Standard-Model Extension. Our setting is explicit diffeomorphism violation and we focus on the background fields known in the literature as $u$ and $s^{μν}$. The Hamiltonian formalism is developed for these contributions, which amounts to deriving modified Hamiltonian and momentum constraints. We then study the connection between these modified constraints and the modified Einstein equations. Implications are drawn on the form of the background fields to guarantee the internal consistency of the corresponding modified-gravity theories. In the course of our analysis, we obtain a set of consistency requirements for $u$ and certain sectors of $s^{μν}$. We argue that the constraint structure remains untouched when these conditions are satisfied. Our results shed light on explicit violations of diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance in gravity. They may turn out to be valuable for developing a better understanding of effective modified-gravity theories.

Classical Lagrangians for the nonminimal spin-nondegenerate Standard-Model Extension at higher orders in Lorentz violation

We present new results for classical-particle propagation subject to Lorentz violation. Our analysis is dedicated to spin-nondegenerate operators of arbitrary mass dimension provided by the fermion sector of the Standard-Model Extension. In particular, classical Lagrangians are obtained for the operators $\hat{b}_μ$ and $\hat{H}_{μν}$ as perturbative expansions in Lorentz violation. The functional dependence of the higher-order contributions in the background fields is found to be quite peculiar, which is probably attributed to particle spin playing an essential role for these cases. This paper closes one of the last gaps in understanding classical-particle propagation in the presence of Lorentz violation. Lagrangians of the kind presented will turn out to be valuable for describing particle propagation in curved backgrounds with diffeomorphism invariance and/or local Lorentz symmetry explicitly violated.

Magnetic-conductivity effects on electromagnetic propagation in dispersive matter

The Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) has been investigated as a new transport phenomenon in condensed matter. Such an effect appears in systems with chiral fermions and involves an electric current generated by a magnetic field by means of an "exotic" magnetic conductivity. This effect can also be connected with extensions of the usual Ohm's law either in magnetohydrodynamics or in Lorentz-violating scenarios. In this work, we study the classical propagation of electromagnetic waves in isotropic dispersive matter subject to a generalized Ohm's law. The latter involves currents linear in the magnetic field and implies scenarios inducing parity violation. We pay special attention to the case of a vanishing electric conductivity. For a diagonal magnetic conductivity, which includes the CME, the refractive index is modified such that it implies birefringence. For a nondiagonal magnetic conductivity, modified refractive indices exhibiting imaginary parts occur ascribing a conducting behavior to a usual dielectric medium. Our findings provide new insight into typical material properties associated with a magnetic conductivity.

Causality, unitarity, and indefinite metric in Maxwell-Chern-Simons extensions

We canonically quantize $(2+1)$-dimensional electrodynamics including a higher-derivative Chern-Simons term. The effective theory describes a standard photon and an additional degree of freedom associated with a massive ghost. We find the Hamiltonian and the algebra satisfied by the field operators. The theory is characterized by an indefinite metric in the Hilbert space that brings up questions on causality and unitarity. We study both of the latter fundamental properties and show that microcausality as well as perturbative unitarity up to one-loop order are conserved when the Lee-Wick prescription is employed.

Unitarity in Maxwell-Carroll-Field-Jackiw electrodynamics

In this work we focus on the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) modified electrodynamics in combination with a CPT-even Lorentz-violating contribution. We add a photon mass term to the Lagrange density and study the question whether this contribution can render the theory unitary. The analysis is based on the pole structure of the modified photon propagator as well as the validity of the optical theorem. We find, indeed, that the massive CFJ-type modification is unitary at tree-level. This result provides a further example for how a photon mass can mitigate malign behaviors.

Maxwell electrodynamics modified by a CPT-odd dimension-five higher-derivative term

In this paper, we consider an electrodynamics of higher derivatives coupled to a Lorentz-violating background tensor. Specifically, we are interested in a dimension-five term of the CPT-odd sector of the nonminimal Standard-Model Extension. By a particular choice of the operator $\hat{k}_{AF}$, we obtain a higher-derivative version of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term, $\frac{1}{2}ε^{κλμν}A_λD_κ\square F_{μν}$, with a Lorentz-violating background vector $D_κ$. This modification is subject to being investigated. We calculate the propagator of the theory and from its poles, we analyze the dispersion relations of the isotropic and anisotropic sectors. We verify that classical causality is valid for all parameter choices, but that unitarity of the theory is generally not assured. The latter is found to break down for certain configurations of the background field and momentum. In an analog way, we also study a dimension-five anisotropic higher-derivative CFJ term, which is written as $ε^{κλμν}A_λT_κ(T\cdot\partial)^{2}F_{μν}$ and is directly linked to the photon sector of Myers-Pospelov theory. Within the second model, purely timelike and spacelike $T_κ$ are considered. For the timelike choice, one mode is causal, whereas the other is noncausal. Unitarity is conserved, in general, as long as the energy stays real - even for the noncausal mode. For the spacelike scenario, causality is violated when the propagation direction lies within certain regimes. However, there are particular configurations preserving unitarity and strong numerical indications exist that unitarity is guaranteed for all purely spacelike configurations. The results improve our understanding of nonminimal CPT-odd extensions of the electromagnetic sector.

(Gravitational) Vacuum Cherenkov Radiation

This work reviews our current understanding of Cherenkov-type processes in vacuum that may occur due to a possible violation of Lorentz invariance. The description of Lorentz violation is based on the Standard Model Extension (SME). To get an overview as general as possible, the most important findings for vacuum Cherenkov radiation in Minkowski spacetime are discussed. After doing so, special emphasis is put on gravitational Cherenkov radiation. For a better understanding, the essential properties of the gravitational SME are recalled in this context. The common grounds and differences of vacuum Cherenkov radiation in Minkowski spacetime and in the gravity sector are emphasized.

Dimensional reduction of the electromagnetic sector of the nonminimal Standard-Model-Extension

In the current paper, we construct a Lorentz-violating electrodynamics in (1+2) spacetime dimensions from the electromagnetic sector of the nonminimal Standard-Model Extension (SME) in (1+3) dimensions. Subsequently, we study some of the basic properties of this framework. We obtain the field equations, the Green's functions, and the perturbative Feynman rules. Furthermore, the modified dispersion relations are computed at leading order in Lorentz violation. We then remove the unphysical degrees of freedom from the electromagnetic Green's function that are present due to gauge invariance. The resulting object is used to construct the general solutions of the uncoupled field equations with external inhomogeneities present. This modified planar electrodynamics may be valuable to describe electromagnetic phenomena in two-dimensional condensed-matter systems. Furthermore, it supports a better understanding of the electromagnetic sector of the nonminimal SME.

Maxwell electrodynamics modified by CPT-even and Lorentz-violating dimension-6 higher-derivative terms

In this paper, we investigate an electrodynamics in which the physical modes are coupled to a Lorentz-violating (LV) background by means of a higher-derivative term. We analyze the modes associated with the dispersion relations (DRs) obtained from the poles of the propagator. More specifically, we study Maxwell's electrodynamics modified by a LV operator of mass dimension 6. The modification has the form ${D_{βα}}\partial_σF^{σβ}\partial_λ F^{λα}$, i.e., it possesses two additional derivatives coupled to a \textit{CPT}-even tensor $D_{βα}$ that plays the role of the fixed background. We first evaluate the propagator and obtain the dispersion relations of the theory. By doing so, we analyze some configurations of the fixed background and search for sectors where the energy is well-defined and causality is assured. A brief analysis of unitarity is included for particular configurations. Afterwards, we perform the same kind of analysis for a more general dimension-6 model. We conclude that the modes of both Lagrange densities are possibly plagued by physical problems, including causality and unitarity violation, and that signal propagation may become physically meaningful only in the high-momentum regime.

From classical Lagrangians to Hamilton operators in the Standard-Model Extension

In this article we investigate whether a theory based on a classical Lagrangian for the minimal Standard-Model Extension (SME) can be quantized such that the result is equal to the corresponding low-energy Hamilton operator obtained from the field-theory description. This analysis is carried out for the whole collection of minimal Lagrangians found in the literature. The upshot is that first quantization can be performed consistently. The unexpected observation is made that at first order in Lorentz violation and at second order in the velocity the Lagrangians are related to the Hamilton functions by a simple transformation. Under mild assumptions, it is shown that this holds universally. This result is used successfully to obtain classical Lagrangians for two complicated sectors of the minimal SME that have not been considered in the literature so far. Therefore, it will not be an obstacle anymore to derive such Lagrangians even for involved sets of coefficients - at least to the level of approximation stated above.

Analysis of the consistency of parity-odd nonbirefringent modified Maxwell theory

There exist two deformations of standard electrodynamics that describe Lorentz symmetry violation in the photon sector: CPT-odd Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and CPT-even modified Maxwell theory. In this article, we focus on the parity-odd nonbirefringent sector of modified Maxwell theory. It is coupled to a standard Dirac theory of massive spin-1/2 fermions resulting in a modified quantum electrodynamics (QED). This theory is discussed with respect to properties such as microcausality and unitarity, where it turns out that these hold. Furthermore, a priori, the limit of the theory for vanishing Lorentz-violating parameters seems to be discontinuous. Since it is not clear, whether this is a gauge artifact, the cross section for a physical process - modified Compton scattering - is calculated numerically. Despite the numerical instabilities occurring for scattering of unpolarized electrons off polarized photons in the second physical polarization state, it is shown that for Lorentz-violating parameters much smaller than 1 the modified theory approaches standard QED, which is strengthened by analytical investigations. Hence, the theory proves to be consistent, at least with regard to the investigations performed. This leads to the interesting result of having a well-defined parity-odd extension of QED.

Multiple Lorentz groups - a toy model for superluminal muon neutrinos

In this article an idea is presented, which allows for the explanation of superluminal muon neutrinos. It is based on the introduction of a new superluminal, massless gauge boson coupling to the neutrino only, but not to other standard model particles. The model is discussed with regard to the Supernova 1987 (SN 1987) velocity bound on electron antineutrinos and the Cohen-Glashow constraint on superluminal neutrino propagation. The latter can be circumvented if - within the framework of the model - a sterile neutrino mixing with the active neutrino mass eigenstates is introduced. The suggestion of a sterile neutrino accounting for superluminal neutrinos has already been proposed in several papers. It is possible to choose mixing angles with the sterile neutrino sector such that the model respects both the SN 1987 bound and the muon neutrino travels superluminally.

Higgs Decay to Gluons at NNLO

We present an analytical calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to the partial decay width $H\to gg$ for a Higgs boson in the intermediate mass range. We apply an asymptotic expansion for $M_H\ll 2M_t$ and compute three terms in the expansion. The leading term confirms the results present in the literature. It is argued that our result is equivalent to an exact calculation up to $M_H\approx M_t$. For a Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV the power-suppressed terms lead to corrections of about 9% in the next-to-next-to-leading order coefficient.
