Big Bounce in Dipole Cosmology

We derive the cosmological Big Bounce scenario from the dipole approximation of Loop Quantum Gravity. We show that a non-singular evolution takes place for any matter field and that, by considering a massless scalar field as a relational clock for the dynamics, the semi-classical proprieties of an initial state are preserved on the other side of the bounce. This model thus enhances the relation between Loop Quantum Cosmology and the full theory.

Scalar Field Theory on Non-commutative Snyder Space-Time

We construct a scalar field theory on the Snyder non-commutative space-time. The symmetry underlying the Snyder geometry is deformed at the co-algebraic level only, while its Poincaré algebra is undeformed. The Lorentz sector is undeformed at both algebraic and co-algebraic level, but the co-product for momenta (defining the star-product) is non-co-associative. The Snyder-deformed Poincaré group is described by a non-co-associative Hopf algebra. The definition of the interacting theory in terms of a non-associative star-product is thus questionable. We avoid the non-associativity by the use of a space-time picture based on the concept of realization of a non-commutative geometry. The two main results we obtain are: (i) the generic (namely for any realization) construction of the co-algebraic sector underlying the Snyder geometry and (ii) the definition of a non-ambiguous self interacting scalar field theory on this space-time. The first order correction terms of the corresponding Lagrangian are explicitly computed. The possibility to derive Noether charges for the Snyder space-time is also discussed.

Triangulated Loop Quantum Cosmology: Bianchi IX and inhomogenous perturbations

We develop the "triangulated" version of loop quantum cosmology, recently introduced in the literature. We focus on the "dipole" cosmology, where space is a three-sphere and the triangulation is formed by two tetrahedra. We show that the discrete fiducial connection has a simple and appealing geometrical interpretation and we correct the ansatz on the relation between the model variables and the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker scale factor. The modified ansatz leads to the convergence of the Hamiltonian constraint to the continuum one. We then ask which degrees of freedom are captured by this model. We show that the model is rich enough to describe the (anisotropic) Bianchi IX Universe, and give the explicit relation between the Bianchi IX variables and the variables of the model. We discuss the possibility of using this path in order to define the quantization of the Bianchi IX Universe. The model contains more degrees of freedom than Bianchi IX, and therefore captures some inhomogeneous degrees of freedom as well. Inhomogeneous degrees of freedom can be expanded in representations of the SU(2) Bianchi IX isometry group, and the dipole model captures the lowest integer representation of these, connected to hyper-spherical harmonic of angular momentum j=1.

The Mixmaster Universe in a generalized uncertainty principle framework

The Bianchi IX cosmological model is analyzed in a generalized uncertainty principle framework. The Arnowitt-Deser-Misner reduction of the dynamics is performed and a time-coordinate, namely the volume of the Universe, naturally arises. Such a variable is treated in the ordinary way while the anisotropies (the physical degrees of freedom) are described by a deformed Heisenberg algebra. The analysis of the model (passing through Bianchi I and II) is performed at classical level by studying the modifications induced on the symplectic geometry by the deformed algebra. We show that, the Universe can not isotropize because of the deformed Kasner dynamics, the triangular allowed domain is asymptotically stationary with respect to the particle (Universe) and its bounces against the walls are not interrupted by the deformed effects. Furthermore, no reflection law can be in general obtained since the Bianchi II model is no longer analytically integrable. This way, the deformed Mixmaster Universe can be still considered a chaotic system.

Semiclassical suppression of weak anisotropies of a generic Universe

A semiclassical mechanism which suppresses the weak anisotropies of an inhomogeneous cosmological model is developed. In particular, a wave function of this Universe having a meaningful probabilistic interpretation is obtained that is in agreement with the Copenhagen School. It describes the evolution of the anisotropies with respect to the isotropic scale factor which is regarded as a semiclassical variable playing an observer-like role. Near the cosmological singularity the solution spreads over all values of the anisotropies while, when the Universe expands sufficiently, the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model appears to be the favorite state.

Cosmological bounce from a deformed Heisenberg algebra

The implications of a deformed Heisenberg algebra on the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological models are investigated. We consider the Snyder non-commutative space in which the translation group is undeformed and the rotational invariance preserved. When this framework is implemented to one-dimensional systems (which is this case) the modifications are uniquely fixed up to a sign. A cosmological quantum bounce à la loop quantum cosmology is then obtained. We also get the Randall-Sundrum braneworld scenario and this way a Snyder-deformed quantum cosmology can be considered as a common phenomenological description for both theories.

GUP vs polymer quantum cosmology: the Taub model

The fate of the cosmological singularity in the Taub model is discussed within the two frameworks. An internal time variable is ruled out and the only remaining degree of freedom (the anisotropy) of the Universe is quantized according to such schemes. The resulting GUP Taub Universe is singularity-free, differently from the second case, where the classical singularity is not tamed by the polymer-loop quantum effects.

Semi-classical isotropization of the Mixmaster Universe

A semi-classical mechanism which leads to the isotropization of the Mixmaster Universe is developed. A wave function of this Universe, which has a meaningful probabilistic interpretation, is constructed and it describes the evolution of the anisotropies of the Universe with respect to the isotropic scale factor, which plays the external observer-like role. We show that, once large volume regions are investigated, the closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker configuration is deeply privileged.

Bianchi IX in the GUP approach

The Bianchi IX cosmological model (through Bianchi I and II) is analyzed in the framework of a generalized uncertainty principle. In particular, the anisotropies of the Universe are described by a deformed Heisenberg algebra. Three main results are in order. (i) The Universe can not isotropize because of the deformed Kasner dynamics. (ii) The triangular allowed domain is asymptotically stationary with respect to the particle (Universe) and its bounces against the walls are not interrupted by the deformed effects. (iii) No reflection law can be in obtained since the Bianchi II model is no longer analytically integrable.

Polymer Quantum Dynamics of the Taub Universe

Within the framework of non-standard (Weyl) representations of the canonical commutation relations, we investigate the polymer quantization of the Taub cosmological model. The Taub model is analyzed within the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner reduction of its dynamics, by which a time variable arises. While the energy variable and its conjugate momentum are treated as ordinary Heisenberg operators, the anisotropy variable and its conjugate momentum are represented by the polymer technique. The model is analyzed at both classical and quantum level. As a result, classical trajectories flatten with respect to the potential wall, and the cosmological singularity is not probabilistically removed. In fact, the dynamics of the wave packets is characterized by an interference phenomenon, which, however, is not able to stop the evolution towards the classical singularity.

Deformed spaces and loop cosmology

The non-singular bouncing solution of loop quantum cosmology is reproduced by a deformed minisuperspace Heisenberg algebra. This algebra is a realization of the Snyder space, is almost unique and is related to the $κ$-Poincaré one. Since the sign of the deformation parameter it is not fixed, the Friedmann equation of braneworlds theory can also be obtained. Moreover, the sign is the only freedom in the picture and these frameworks are the only ones which can be reproduced by our deformed scheme. A generalized uncertainty principle for loop quantum cosmology is also proposed.

Classical and Quantum Features of the Mixmaster Singularity

This review article is devoted to analyze the main properties characterizing the cosmological singularity associated to the homogeneous and inhomogeneous Mixmaster model. After the introduction of the main tools required to treat the cosmological issue, we review in details the main results got along the last forty years on the Mixmaster topic. We firstly assess the classical picture of the homogeneous chaotic cosmologies and, after a presentation of the canonical method for the quantization, we develop the quantum Mixmaster behavior. Finally, we extend both the classical and quantum features to the fully inhomogeneous case. Our survey analyzes the fundamental framework of the Mixmaster picture and completes it by accounting for recent and peculiar outstanding results.

Quantum cosmology with a minimal length

Quantum cosmology in the presence of a fundamental minimal length is analyzed in the context of the flat isotropic and the Taub cosmological models. Such minimal scale comes out from a generalized uncertainty principle and the quantization is performed in the minisuperspace representation. Both the quantum Universes are singularity-free and (i) in the isotropic model no evidences for a Big-Bounce appear; (ii) in the Taub one a quasi-isotropic configuration for the Universe is predicted by the model.

Cosmological implications of an evolutionary quantum gravity

The cosmological implications of an evolutionary quantum gravity are analyzed in the context of a generic inhomogeneous model. The Schrödinger problem is formulated and solved in the presence of a scalar field, an ultrarelativistic matter and a perfect gas regarded as the dust-clock. Considering the actual phenomenology, it is shown how the evolutionary approach overlaps the Wheeler-DeWitt one.

Quantum Dynamics of the Taub Universe in a Generalized Uncertainty Principle framework

The implications of a Generalized Uncertainty Principle on the Taub cosmological model are investigated. The model is studied in the ADM reduction of the dynamics and therefore a time variable is ruled out. Such a variable is quantized in a canonical way and the only physical degree of freedom of the system (related to the Universe anisotropy) is quantized by means of a modified Heisenberg algebra. The analysis is performed at both classical and quantum level. In particular, at quantum level, the motion of wave packets is investigated. The two main results obtained are as follows. i) The classical singularity is probabilistically suppressed. The Universe exhibits a stationary behavior and the probability amplitude is peaked in a determinate region. ii) The GUP wave packets provide the right behavior in the establishment of a quasi-isotropic configuration for the Universe.

Minisuperspace dynamics in a generalized uncertainty principle framework

The minisuperspace dynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) and of the Taub Universes in the context of a Generalized Uncertainty Principle is analyzed in detail. In particular, the motion of the wave packets is investigated and, in both the models, the classical singularity appear to be probabilistic suppressed. Moreover, the FRW wave packets approach the Planckian region in a stationary way and no evidences for a Big-Bounce, as predicted in Loop Quantum Cosmology, appear. On the other hand, the Taub wave packets provide the right behavior in predicting an isotropic Universe.

The Big-Bang Singularity in the framework of a Generalized Uncertainty Principle

We analyze the quantum dynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe in the context of a Generalized Uncertainty Principle. Since the isotropic Universe dynamics resembles that of a one-dimensional particle, we quantize it with the commutation relations associated to an extended formulation of the Heisenberg algebra. The evolution of the system is described in terms of a massless scalar field taken as a relational time. We construct suitable wave packets and analyze their dynamics from a quasi-classical region to the initial singularity. The appearance of a non singular dynamics comes out as far as the behavior of the probability density is investigated. Furthermore, reliable indications arise about the absence of a Big-Bounce, as predicted in recent issues of Loop Quantum Cosmology.
