Submanifolds with nonparallel first normal bundle revisited

In this paper, we analyze the geometric structure of an Euclidean submanifold whose osculating spaces form a nonconstant family of proper subspaces of the same dimension. We prove that if the rate of change of the osculating spaces is small, then the submanifold must be a (submanifold of a) ruled submanifold of a very special type. We also give a sharp estimate of the dimension of the rulings.

Euclidean hypersurfaces with genuine deformations in codimension two

We classify hypersurfaces of rank two of Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$ that admit genuine isometric deformations in $\R^{n+2}$. That an isometric immersion $\hat f\colon\,M^n\to\R^{n+2}$ is a genuine isometric deformation of a hypersurface $f\colon\, M^n\to\R^{n+1}$ means that $\hat f$ is nowhere a composition $\hat f=\hat F\circ f$, where $\hat F\colon\,V\subset \R^{n+1}\to\R^{n+2}$ is an isometric immersion of an open subset $V$ containing $f(M)$.

Constant mean curvature hypersurfaces with single valued projections on planar domains

A classical problem in constant mean curvature hypersurface theory is, for given $H\geq 0$, to determine whether a compact submanifold $Γ^{n-1}$ of codimension two in Euclidean space $\R_+^{n+1}$, having a single valued orthogonal projection on $\R^n$, is the boundary of a graph with constant mean curvature $H$ over a domain in $\R^n$. A well known result of Serrin gives a sufficient condition, namely, $Γ$ is contained in a right cylinder $C$ orthogonal to $\R^n$ with inner mean curvature $H_C\geq H$. In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness if the orthogonal projection $L^{n-1}$ of $Γ$ on $\R^n$ has mean curvature $H_L\geq-H$ and $Γ$ is contained in a cone $K$ with basis in $\R^n$ enclosing a domain in $\R^n$ containing $L$ such that the mean curvature of $K$ satisfies $H_K\geq H$. Our condition reduces to Serrin's when the vertex of the cone is infinite.

A complete solution of Samuel's problem

We give a complete solution of a problem in submanifold theory posed and partially solved by the eminent algebraic geometer Pierre Samuel in 1947. Namely, to determine all pairs of immersions of a given manifold into Euclidean space that have the same Gauss map and induce conformal metrics on the manifold. The case of isometric induced metrics was solved in 1985 by the first author and D. Gromoll.

Parabolic submanifolds of rank two

The goal of this paper is to classify parametrically parabolic submanifolds in any codimension. First, we describe the ones that are ruled and show that they are the only parabolic submanifolds that admit an isometric immersion as a hypersurface. Then, we classify the nonruled ones by two different means. In fact, we provide the polar and bipolar parametrizations, each of which is associated to a parabolic surface and a function on the surface which satisfies a parabolic differential equation. To conclude, we describe the structure of the singular set of the nonruled parabolic submanifolds.

Isometric rigidity in codimension two

We show that among the Euclidean submanifolds with codimension two the ones of rank two that are parabolic but nonruled are isometrically rigid. This generalizes the result in [10] that these submanifolds are genuinely rigid. In addition, we give a parametric classifications of all parabolic submanifolds.

The holomorphic Gauss Parametrization

We give a local parametric description of all holomorphic hypersurfaces in complex Euclidean and projective spaces with constant index of relative nullity, together with applications. This is a complex analogue to the parametrization for real hypersurfaces in Euclidean space known as the Gauss parametrization.

All superconformal surfaces in \R^4 in terms of minimal surfaces

We give an explicit construction of any simply-connected superconformal surface $ϕ\colon M^2\to \R^4$ in Euclidean space in terms of a pair of conjugate minimal surfaces $g,h\colon M^2\to\R^4$. That $ϕ$ is superconformal means that its ellipse of curvature is a circle at any point. We characterize the pairs $(g,h)$ of conjugate minimal surfaces that give rise to images of holomorphic curves by an inversion in $\R^4$ and to images of superminimal surfaces in either a sphere $\Sf^4$ or a hyperbolic space $\Hy^4$ by an stereographic projection. We also determine the relation between the pairs $(g,h)$ of conjugate minimal surfaces associated to a superconformal surface and its image by an inversion. In particular, this yields a new transformation for minimal surfaces in $\R^4$.

The Dirichlet problem for constant mean curvature surfaces in Heisenberg space

We study constant mean curvature graphs in the Riemannian 3-dimensional Heisenberg spaces ${\cal H}={\cal H}(τ)$. Each such ${\cal H}$ is the total space of a Riemannian submersion onto the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ with geodesic fibers the orbits of a Killing field. We prove the existence and uniqueness of CMC graphs in ${\cal H}$ with respect to the Riemannian submersion over certain domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ taking on prescribed boundary values.

Blaschke's problem for hypersurfaces

We solve Blaschke's problem for hypersurfaces of dimension $n\geq 3$. Namely, we determine all pairs of Euclidean hypersurfaces $f,\tilde{f}\colon M^n\to\R^{n+1}$ that induce conformal metrics on $M^n$ and envelope a common sphere congruence in $\R^{n+1}$.

Reducibility of Dupin submanifolds

We introduce the notion of weak reduciblity for Dupin submanifolds with arbitrary codimension. We give a complete characterization of all weakly reducible Dupin submanifolds, as a consequence of a general result on a broader class of Euclidean submanifolds. As a main application, we derive an explicit recursive procedure to generate all holonomic Dupin submanifolds in terms of solutions of completely integrable systems of linear partial differential equations of first order. We obtain several additional results on Dupin submanifolds.
