A two-component clumpy model for the shell evolution of classical novae: the case of V5668 Sgr

The shell of the classical nova V5668 Sgr was resolved by ALMA at the frequency of 230 GHz 927 days after eruption, showing that most of the continuum bremsstrahlung emission originates in clumps with diameter smaller than $10^{15}$ cm. Using VLA radio observations, obtained between days 2 and 1744 after eruption, at frequencies between 1 and 35 GHz, we modeled the nova spectra, assuming first that the shell is formed by a fixed number of identical clumps, and afterwards with the clumps having a power law distribution of sizes, and were able to obtain the clump's physical parameters (radius, density and temperature). We found that the density of the clumps decreases linearly with the increase of the shell's volume, which is compatible with the existence of a second media, hotter and thinner, in pressure equilibrium with the clumps. We show that this thinner media could be responsible for the emission of the hard X-rays observed at the early times of the nova eruption, and that the clump's temperature evolution follows that of the super-soft X-ray luminosity. We propose that the clumps were formed in the radiative shock produced by the collision of the fast wind of the white dwarf after eruption, with the slower velocity of the thermonuclear ejecta. From the total mass of the clumps, the observed expansion velocity and thermonuclear explosion models, we obtained an approximate value of 1.25 M$_{\odot}$ for the mass of the white dwarf, a central temperature of $10^7$ K and an accretion rate from the secondary star of $10^{-9}-10^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$ y$^{-1}$.

The CUBES Science Case

We introduce the scientific motivations for the development of the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) that is now in construction for the Very Large Telescope. The assembled cases span a broad range of contemporary topics across Solar System, Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, where observations are limited by the performance of current ground-based spectrographs shortwards of 400nm. A brief background to each case is presented and specific technical requirements on the instrument design that flow-down from each case are identified. These were used as inputs to the CUBES design, that will provide a factor of ten gain in efficiency for astronomical spectroscopy over 300-405nm, at resolving powers of R~24,000 and ~7,000. We include performance estimates that demonstrate the ability of CUBES to observe sources that are up to three magnitudes fainter than currently possible at ground-ultraviolet wavelengths, and we place its predicted performance in the context of existing facillities.

Imaging and analysis of neon nova V382 Vel shell

We present the detection and imaging of the spatially resolved shell of nova V382 Vel with SOAR adaptive optics module (SAM). The shell was observed in narrow band filters H$α$ and [O III] 5007Å, revealing different structures in each filter. The shell's angular diameter obtained was $9.9$ arcsec, equivalent to $2.8 \times 10^{17}$ cm, using the distance of $1.79$ kpc obtained by Gaia mission. The upper limit for total shell mass derived from recombination lines is $M_{s} = 1.4 \times 10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. Our photoionization models indicate an accretion disk with $T_d=60,000$ K and L=$10^{36}$ erg/s as main ionizing source.

Accelerated Aging in 3 mol%-Yttria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Ceramics Sintered in Reducing Conditions

The aging behavior of 3-mol%-yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) ceramics sintered in air and in reducing conditions was investigated at 140°C in water vapor. It was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) that 3Y-TZP samples sintered in reducing conditions exhibited significantly higher tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation than samples with similar density and average grain size values but obtained by sintering in air. This fact is explained by the increase of the oxygen vacancy concentration and by the presence at the grain boundary region of a new aggregate phase formed because of the exolution of Fe2+ ions observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Low-mass eclipsing binaries in the WFCAM Transit Survey: the persistence of the M-dwarf radius inflation problem

We present the characterization of 5 new short-period low-mass eclipsing binaries from the WFCAM Transit Survey. The analysis was performed by using the photometric WFCAM J-mag data and additional low- and intermediate-resolution spectroscopic data to obtain both orbital and physical properties of the studied sample. The light curves and the measured radial velocity curves were modeled simultaneously with the JKTEBOP code, with Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations for the error estimates. The best-model fit have revealed that the investigated detached binaries are in very close orbits, with orbital separations of $2.9 \leq a \leq 6.7$ $R_{\odot}$ and short periods of $0.59 \leq P_{\rm orb} \leq 1.72$ d, approximately. We have derived stellar masses between $0.24$ and $0.72$ $M_{\odot}$ and radii ranging from $0.42$ to $0.67$ $R_{\odot}$. The great majority of the LMEBs in our sample has an estimated radius far from the predicted values according to evolutionary models. The components with derived masses of $M < 0.6$ $M_{\odot}$ present a radius inflation of $\sim$$9\%$ or more. This general behavior follows the trend of inflation for partially-radiative stars proposed previously. These systems add to the increasing sample of low-mass stellar radii that are not well-reproduced by stellar models. They further highlight the need to understand the magnetic activity and physical state of small stars. Missions like TESS will provide many such systems to perform high-precision radius measurements to tightly constrain low-mass stellar evolution models.

Detection of the secondary eclipse of Qatar-1b in the Ks band

Qatar-1b is a close-orbiting hot Jupiter ($R_p\simeq 1.18$ $R_J$, $M_p\simeq 1.33$ $M_J$) around a metal-rich K-dwarf, with orbital separation and period of 0.023 AU and 1.42 days. We have observed the secondary eclipse of this exoplanet in the Ks band with the objective of deriving a brightness temperature for the planet and providing further constraints to the orbital configuration of the system. We obtained near-infrared photometric data from the ground by using the OMEGA2000 instrument at the 3.5 m telescope at Calar Alto (Spain) in staring mode, with the telescope defocused. We have used principal component analysis (PCA) to identify correlated systematic trends in the data. A Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis was performed to model the correlated systematics and fit for the secondary eclipse of Qatar-1b using a previously developed occultation model. We adopted the prayer bead method to assess the effect of red noise on the derived parameters. We measured a secondary eclipse depth of $0.196\%^{+0.071\%}_{-0.051\%}$, which indicates a brightness temperature in the Ks band for the planet of $1885^{+212}_{-168}$ K. We also measured a small deviation in the central phase of the secondary eclipse of $-0.0079^{+0.0162}_{-0.0043}$, which leads to a value for $e\cosω$ of $-0.0123^{+0.0252}_{-0.0067}$. However, this last result needs to be confirmed with more data.

Detection of the secondary eclipse of WASP-10b in the Ks-band

WASP-10b, a non-inflated hot Jupiter, was discovered around a K-dwarf in a near circular orbit ($\sim $$0.06$). Since its discovery in 2009, different published parameters for this system have led to a discussion about the size, density, and eccentricity of this exoplanet. In order to test the hypothesis of a circular orbit for WASP-10b, we have observed its secondary eclipse in the Ks-band, where the contribution of planetary light is high enough to be detected from the ground. Observations were performed with the OMEGA2000 instrument at the 3.5-meter telescope at Calar Alto (Almería, Spain), in staring mode during 5.4 continuous hours, with the telescope defocused, monitoring the target during the expected secondary eclipse. A relative light curve was generated and corrected from systematic effects, using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique. The final light curve was fitted using a transit model to find the eclipse depth and a possible phase shift. The best model obtained from the Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis resulted in an eclipse depth of $ΔF$ of $0.137\%^{+0.013\%}_{-0.019\%}$ and a phase offset of $Δϕ$ of $-0.0028^{+0.0005}_{-0.0004}$. The eclipse phase offset derived from our modeling has systematic errors that were not taken into account and should not be considered as evidence of an eccentric orbit. The offset in phase obtained leads to a value for $|e\cosω|$ of $0.0044$. The derived eccentricity is too small to be of any significance.

A search and modeling of peculiar narrow transient line components in novae spectra

In this paper we discuss the formation of peculiar narrow emission line components observed in the spectra of a few novae. We aim to identify the physical source responsible for transient narrow components that present orbital radial velocity modulations, first observed in the post-outburst recombination lines of Nova U Sco 2010. A search for candidate novae showing similar narrow components is presented. Photoionization simulations indicate that the forming region cannot be restricted to the primary Roche Lobe, but could be located around the outer Lagrangian point L3. Further analysis disfavors an origin at the accretion disk and the companion star. In addition, we analyze possible correlations between the presence of the narrow components, the basic nova parameters and the spectral classification in the initial permitted phase.

A cyclic bipolar wind in the interacting binary V393 Scorpii

V393 Scorpii is a Double Periodic Variable characterized by a relatively stable non-orbital photometric cycle of 253 days. Mennickent et al. argue for the presence of a massive optically thick disc around the more massive B-type component and describe the evolutionary stage of the system. In this paper we analyze the behavior of the main spectroscopic optical lines during the long non-orbital photometric cycle. We study the radial velocity of the donor determining their orbital elements and find a small but significant orbital eccentricity (e = 0.04). The donor spectral features are modeled and removed from the spectrum at every observing epoch using the light-curve model given by Mennickent et al. We find that the line emission is larger during eclipses and mostly comes from a bipolar wind. We find that the long cycle is explained in terms of a modulation of the wind strength; the wind has a larger line and continuum emissivity on the high state. We report the discovery of highly variable chromospheric emission in the donor, as revealed by Doppler maps of the emission lines MgII 4481 and CI 6588. We discuss notable and some novel spectroscopic features like discrete absorption components, especially visible at blue-depressed OI 7773 absorption wings during the second half-cycle, Balmer double emission with V/R-curves showing "Z-type" and "S-type" excursions around secondary and main eclipse, respectively, and H_beta emission wings extending up to +- 2000 km/s. We discuss possible causes for these phenomena and for their modulations with the long cycle.

The peculiar nova V1309 Sco/Nova Sco 2008: A candidate twin of V838 Mon

Nova Scorpii 2008 was the target of our Directory Discretionary Time proposal at VLT+UVES in order to study the evolution, origin and abundances of the heavy-element absorption system recently discovered in 80% of classical novae in outburst. The early decline of Nova Scorpii 2008 was monitored with high resolution echelle spectroscopy at 5 different epochs. The analysis of the absorption and the emission lines show many unusual characteristics. Nova Scorpii 2008 is confirmed to differ from a common Classical Nova as well as a Symbiotic Recurrent Nova, and it shows characteristics which are common to the so called, yet debated, red-novae. The origin of this new nova remains uncertain.

HR Del remnant anatomy using 2-D spectral data and 3-D photoionization shell models

The HR Del nova remnant was observed with the IFU-GMOS at Gemini North. The spatially resolved spectral data cube was used in the kinematic, morphological and abundance analysis of the ejecta. The line maps show a very clumpy shell with two main symmetric structures. The first one is the outer part of the shell seen in H-alpha, that forms two rings projected in the sky plane. These ring structures correspond to a closed hourglass shape, first proposed by Harman and O'Brien (2003). The equatorial emission enhancement is caused by the superimposed hourglass structures in the line of sight. The second structure seen only in the [OIII] and [NII] maps is located along the polar directions inside the hourglass structure. Abundances gradients between the polar caps and equatorial region were not found. However, the outer part of the shell seems to be less abundant in Oxygen and Nitrogen than the inner regions. Detailed 2.5D photoionization modeling of the 3D shell was performed using the mass distribution inferred from the observations and the presence of mass clumps. The resulting model grids are used to constrain the physical properties of the shell as well as the central ionizing source. A sequence of 3D clumpy models including a disk shaped ionization source is able to reproduce the ionization gradients between polar and equatorial regions of the shell. Differences between shell axial ratios in different lines can also be explained by aspherical illumination. A total shell mass of 9 x 10-4 Msun is derived from these models. We estimate that 50% to 70% of the shell mass is contained in neutral clumps with density contrast up to a factor of 30.

Multi-line Doppler imaging of MR Ser in high-state

Doppler images in Balmer, HeI, HeII and CII lines, and simultaneous I-band photometry of the polar MR Ser are presented and analyzed. The Balmer and Helium Doppler tomograms of this bright polar at high mass transfer state show the emission from the accretion flow and the heated surface of the companion star. As a result of a comparison between the Doppler tomograms the ionization structure of the flow could be constrained. The highest ionization region was found in the vicinity of the magnetospheric radius. Photoionization modeling of the accretion column indicates that the Balmer and Helium emission line production in this system can be explained by the central soft Xray illumination only. The orbital ephemeris of MR Ser has been revised.
