Trans-series from condensates in the non-linear sigma model

In this work we provide a massless perturbative framework for the two dimensional non-linear sigma model (NLSM), that allows the computation of the perturbative series attached to the operator condensates in the operator product expansion (OPE). It is based on a limit of the quartic linear sigma model (LSM) and is manifestly $O(N)$ symmetric. We show, at next-to-leading order in the $1/N$ expansion, how this framework reproduces the perturbative contribution to the two-point function, as well as its first exponentially small correction due to the condensate of the Lagrangian operator, in full agreement with the exact non-perturbative large $N$ solution. We also show that, in the full LSM, the physics at the natural UV cutoff indeed decouples from the NLSM in the IR, in the weak-coupling limit. In particular, we show that the perturbative framework for the LSM at the cutoff scale is connected to the one in the NLSM. The structure of power divergences in the LSM regularization also reveals that the first renormalon on the positive Borel axis of the NLSM perturbative self-energy is an UV renormalon, which cancels against the ambiguity in the condensate.

Non-Perturbative Real Topological Strings

We study the resurgent structure of Walcher's real topological string on general Calabi-Yau manifolds. We find trans-series solutions to the corresponding holomorphic anomaly equations, at all orders in the string coupling constant, by extending the operator formalism of the closed topological string, and we obtain explicit formulae for multi-instanton amplitudes. We find that the integer invariants counting disks appear as Stokes constants in the resurgent structure, and we provide experimental evidence for our results in the case of the real topological string on local $\mathbb{P}^2$.

On the Structure of Wave Functions in Complex Chern-Simons Theory

We study the structure of wave functions in complex Chern-Simons theory on the complement of a hyperbolic knot, emphasizing the similarities with the topological string/spectral theory correspondence. We first conjecture a hidden integrality structure in the holomorphic blocks and show that this structure guarantees the cancellation of potential singularities in the full non-perturbative wave function at rational values of the coupling constant. We then develop various techniques to determine the wave function at such rational points. Finally, we illustrate our conjectures and obtain explicit results in the examples of the figure-eight and three-twist knots. In the case of the figure-eight knot, we also perform a direct evaluation of the state integral in the rational case and observe that the resulting wave function has the features of the ground state for a quantum mirror curve.

Resurgence of Refined Topological Strings and Dual Partition Functions

We study the resurgent structure of the refined topological string partition function on a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold, at large orders in the string coupling constant $g_s$ and fixed refinement parameter $\mathsf{b}$. For $\mathsf{b}\neq 1$, the Borel transform admits two families of simple poles, corresponding to integral periods rescaled by $\mathsf{b}$ and $1/\mathsf{b}$. We show that the corresponding Stokes automorphism is expressed in terms of a generalization of the non-compact quantum dilogarithm, and we conjecture that the Stokes constants are determined by the refined Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting spin-$j$ BPS states. This jump in the refined topological string partition function is a special case (unit five-brane charge) of a more general transformation property of wave functions on quantum twisted tori introduced in earlier work by two of the authors. We show that this property follows from the transformation of a suitable refined dual partition function across BPS rays, defined by extending the Moyal star product to the realm of contact geometry.

Resurgence and $1/N$ Expansion in Integrable Field Theories

In theories with renormalons the perturbative series is factorially divergent even after restricting to a given order in $1/N$, making the $1/N$ expansion a natural testing ground for the theory of resurgence. We study in detail the interplay between resurgent properties and the $1/N$ expansion in various integrable field theories with renormalons. We focus on the free energy in the presence of a chemical potential coupled to a conserved charge, which can be computed exactly with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In some examples, like the first $1/N$ correction to the free energy in the non-linear sigma model, the terms in the $1/N$ expansion can be fully decoded in terms of a resurgent trans-series in the coupling constant. In the principal chiral field we find a new, explicit solution for the large $N$ free energy which can be written as the median resummation of a trans-series with infinitely many, analytically computable IR renormalon corrections. However, in other examples, like the Gross-Neveu model, each term in the $1/N$ expansion includes non-perturbative corrections which can not be predicted by a resurgent analysis of the corresponding perturbative series. We also study the properties of the series in $1/N$. In the Gross-Neveu model, where this is convergent, we analytically continue the series beyond its radius of convergence and show how the continuation matches with known dualities with sine-Gordon theories.

A Solvable Deformation of Quantum Mechanics

The conventional Hamiltonian $H= p^2+ V_N(x)$, where the potential $V_N(x)$ is a polynomial of degree $N$, has been studied intensively since the birth of quantum mechanics. In some cases, its spectrum can be determined by combining the WKB method with resummation techniques. In this paper we point out that the deformed Hamiltonian $H=2 \cosh(p)+ V_N(x)$ is exactly solvable for any potential: a conjectural exact quantization condition, involving well-defined functions, can be written down in closed form, and determines the spectrum of bound states and resonances. In particular, no resummation techniques are needed. This Hamiltonian is obtained by quantizing the Seiberg-Witten curve of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Yang-Mills theory, and the exact quantization condition follows from the correspondence between spectral theory and topological strings, after taking a suitable four-dimensional limit. In this formulation, conventional quantum mechanics emerges in a scaling limit near the Argyres-Douglas superconformal point in moduli space. Although our deformed version of quantum mechanics is in many respects similar to the conventional version, it also displays new phenomena, like spontaneous parity symmetry breaking.

TBA equations and resurgent Quantum Mechanics

We derive a system of TBA equations governing the exact WKB periods in one-dimensional Quantum Mechanics with arbitrary polynomial potentials. These equations provide a generalization of the ODE/IM correspondence, and they can be regarded as the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem in resurgent Quantum Mechanics formulated by Voros. Our derivation builds upon the solution of similar Riemann-Hilbert problems in the study of BPS spectra in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories and of minimal surfaces in AdS. We also show that our TBA equations, combined with exact quantization conditions, provide a powerful method to solve spectral problems in Quantum Mechanics. We illustrate our general analysis with a detailed study of PT-symmetric cubic oscillators and quartic oscillators.
