QED with minimal and nonminimal couplings: on the quantum generation of Lorentz violating terms in the pure photon sector

We consider an effective model formed by usual QED (minimal coupling) with the addition of a nonminimal Lorentz violating interaction (proportional to a fixed 4-vector $b_μ$) which may radiatively generate both CPT even and odd terms in the pure gauge sector. We show that gauge invariance from usual QED, considered as a limit of the model for $b_μ\rightarrow 0$, plays an important role in the discussion of the radiatively induced Lorentz violating terms at one-loop order. Moreover, despite the nonrenormalizability of the (effective) model preventing us from readily extending our discussion to higher orders, it is still possible to display the general form of the breaking terms of the photon sector in the on shell limit organized in powers of $b_μ$ which in turn can be considered as a small expansion parameter.

Systematic Implementation of Implicit Regularization for Multi-Loop Feynman Diagrams

Implicit Regularization (IReg) is a candidate to become an invariant framework in momentum space to perform Feynman diagram calculations to arbitrary loop order. In this work we present a systematic implementation of our method that automatically displays the terms to be subtracted by Bogoliubov's recursion formula. Therefore, we achieve a twofold objective: we show that the IReg program respects unitarity, locality and Lorentz invariance and we show that our method is consistent since we are able to display the divergent content of a multi-loop amplitude in a well defined set of basic divergent integrals in one loop momentum only which is the essence of IReg. Moreover, we conjecture that momentum routing invariance in the loops, which has been shown to be connected with gauge symmetry, is a fundamental symmetry of any Feynman diagram in a renormalizable quantum field theory.

Quantum gravitational contributions to the beta function of quantum electrodynamics

We show in a diagrammatic and regularization independent analysis that the quadratic contribu- tion to the beta function which has been conjectured to render quantum electrodynamics asymp- totically free near the Planck scale has its origin in a surface term. Such surface term is intrinsically arbitrarily valued and it is argued to vanish in a consistent treatment of the model.

Ultraviolet and Infrared Divergences in Implicit Regularization: a Consistent Approach

Implicit Regularization is a 4-dimensional regularization initially conceived to treat ultraviolet divergences. It has been successfully tested in several instances in the literature, more specifically in those where Dimensional Regularization does not apply. In the present contribution we extend the method to handle infrared divergences as well. We show that the essential steps which rendered Implicit Regularization adequate in the case of ultraviolet divergences have their counterpart for infrared ones. Moreover we show that a new scale appears, typically an infrared scale which is completely independent of the ultraviolet one. Examples are given.

Gauge invariance and the CPT and Lorentz violating induced Chern-Simons-like term in extended QED

The radiative induction of the CPT and Lorentz violating Chern-Simons (CS) term is reassessed. The massless and massive models are studied. Special attention is given to the preservation of gauge symmetry at higher orders in the background vector $b_μ$ when radiative corrections are considered. Both the study of the odd and even parity sectors of the complete vacuum polarization tensor at one-loop order and a non-perturbative analysis show that this symmetry must be preserved by the quantum corrections. As a complement we obtain that transversality of the polarization tensor does not fix the value of the coefficient of the induced CS term.

Implicit regularization beyond one loop order: gauge field theories

We extend a constrained version of Implicit Regularization (CIR) beyond one loop order for gauge field theories. In this framework, the ultraviolet content of the model is displayed in terms of momentum loop integrals order by order in perturbation theory for any Feynman diagram, while the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identities are controlled by finite surface terms. To illustrate, we apply CIR to massless abelian Gauge Field Theories (scalar and spinorial QED) to two loop order and calculate the two-loop beta-function of the spinorial QED.

On the equivalence between Implicit Regularization and Constrained Differential Renormalization

Constrained Differential Renormalization (CDR) and the constrained version of Implicit Regularization (IR) are two regularization independent techniques that do not rely on dimensional continuation of the space-time. These two methods which have rather distinct basis have been successfully applied to several calculations which show that they can be trusted as practical, symmetry invariant frameworks (gauge and supersymmetry included) in perturbative computations even beyond one-loop order. In this paper, we show the equivalence between these two methods at one-loop order. We show that the configuration space rules of CDR can be mapped into the momentum space procedures of Implicit Regularization, the major principle behind this equivalence being the extension of the properties of regular distributions to the regularized ones.

Implicit regularization beyond one loop order: scalar field theories

Implicit regularization (IR) has been shown as an useful momentum space tool for perturbative calculations in dimension specific theories, such as chiral gauge, topological and supersymmetric quantum field theoretical models at one loop level. In this paper, we aim at generalizing systematically IR to be applicable beyond one loop order. We use a scalar field theory as an example and pave the way for the extension to quantum field theories which are richer from the symmetry content viewpoint. Particularly, we show that a natural (minimal) renormalization scheme emerges, in which the infinities displayed in terms of integrals in one internal momentum are subtracted, whereas infrared and ultraviolet modes do not mix and therefore leave no room for ambiguities. A systematic cancelation of the infrared divergences at any loop order takes place between the ultraviolet finite and divergent parts of the amplitude for non-exceptional momenta leaving, as a byproduct, a renormalization group scale.

Dispersion and uncertainty in multislit matter wave diffraction

We show that single and multislit experiments involving matter waves may be constructed to assess correlations between the position and momentum of a single free particle. These correlations give rise to position dependent phases which develop dynamically and may play an important role in the interference patterns. For large enough transverse coherence lenght such interference patterns are noticeably different from those of a classical dispersion free wave.

Supergravity corrections to the $(g-2)_l$ factor by Implicit Regularization

We apply Implicit regularization in the calculation of the one-loop graviton and gravitino corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the lepton in unbroken supergravity, which is known to be an important test for any regularization method. We find a null result as it is expected from supersymmetry. We compare our results with the ones obtained by using Differential Regularization and Dimensional Reduction, which are known to preserve supersymmetry at one-loop order.

The Role of hidden ambiguities in the Linear Sigma Model with fermions

The $U_L(3)\times U_R(3)$ Linear Sigma Model (LSM) with quark degrees of freedom is used to show that radiative corrections generate undetermined finite contributions. Their origin is related to surface terms which are differences between divergent integrals with the same degree of divergence. The technique used to detect these ambiguities is an implicit regularization on basic divergent integrals that do not depend on external momenta. We show that such contributions are absorbed by renormalization or fixed by symmetry requirements. The general expression for surface terms is derived. Renormalization group coefficients are calculated, as well as relevant observables for this model, such as $f_π$, $f_k$ and the pion and kaon form factors.

Arbitrary parameters in implicit regularization and democracy within perturbative description of 2-dimensional gravitational anomalies

We show that the Implicit Regularization Technique is useful to display quantum symmetry breaking in a complete regularization independent fashion. Arbitrary parameters are expressed by finite differences between integrals of the same superficial degree of divergence whose value is fixed on physical grounds (symmetry requirements or phenomenology). We study Weyl fermions on a classical gravitational background in two dimensions and show that, assuming Lorentz symmetry, the Weyl and Einstein Ward identities reduce to a set of algebraic equations for the arbitrary parameters which allows us to study the Ward identities on equal footing. We conclude in a renormalization independent way that the axial part of the Einstein Ward identity is always violated. Moreover whereas we can preserve the pure tensor part of the Einstein Ward identity at the expense of violating the Weyl Ward identities we may as well violate the former and preserve the latter.

Consistent Momentum Space Regularization/Renormalization of Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theories: The 3-loop beta function for the Wess-Zumino Model

We compute the three loop $β$ function of the Wess-Zumino model to motivate implicit regularization (IR) as a consistent and practical momentum-space framework to study supersymmetric quantum field theories. In this framework which works essentially in the physical dimension of the theory we show that ultraviolet are clearly disantangled from infrared divergences. We obtain consistent results which motivate the method as a good choice to study supersymmetry anomalies in quantum field theories.

Quantum Conductance and Electrical Resistivity

The Landauer formula for quantum conductance, based on the modern paradigm: "conduction is transmission", is generalized to samples of macroscopic size. Two regimes of electrical conduction, namely diffusive and ballistic ones, are studied. In the former regime, Drude's formula for the electrical resistivity is recovered and it is found a maximum conductivity equal to $(e^2 m c)/(π\hbar^2)$, which is of the same order of magnitude as that of good metals at room temperature. In the latter, it is obtained in three dimensions a quantum conductance which is compatible with the one deduced by Sharvin in the ballistic regime. It is also found in this case an electrical conductivity which depends on the size of the sample, in agreement with that measured in very pure metals at the temperature of liquid helium. In two dimensions the result for the conductance in the ballistic regime is consistent with that used to analyse quantum point contacts.

Renormalization Conditions and the Sliding Scale in the Implicit Regularization Scheme: A Simple Connection

We describe in detail how a sliding scale is introduced in the renormalization of a QFT according to integer-dimensional implicit regularization scheme. We show that since no regulator needs to be specified at intermediate steps of the calculation, the introduction of a mass scale is a direct consequence of a set of renormalization conditions. As an illustration the one loop beta-function for QED and lambda*phi^4 theories are derived. They are given in terms of derivatives of appropriately systematized functions (related to definited parts of the amplitudes) with respect to a mass scale mu. Our formal scheme can be easily generalized to higher loop calculations.

Implications of a New Effective Chiral Meson Lagrangian

Based on a recently derived effective chiral meson Lagrangian from the extended SU(2)\otimes SU(2) Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model, in the linear realization of chiral symmetry, we extract to leading order in the 1/N_c expansion all associated relevant three-point functions ρ\to ππ, σ\to ππ, a_1 \to ρπ, a_1 \to σπ, as well as the amplitude for ππscattering. We discuss the formal differences of these amplitudes as compared with those derived in the literature and calculate the associated decay widths and scattering parameters. The differences have two origins: i) new terms, which are proportional to the current quark mass and arise from taking the correct NJL vacuum from the first steps in a proper-time expansion, are present in the Lagrangian; ii) an implemented chiral covariant treatment of the diagonalization in the pseudoscalar - axialvector sector induces new couplings between three or more mesonic fields. Both effects have been derived from the chiral Ward Takahashi identities, which are fully taken into account at each order of the proper-time expansion.
