Nonequilibrium effects in dynamic symmetry breaking

We present a dynamic model based on the linear sigma model with constituent quarks that allows for studying the explicit propagation of fluctuations at a chiral critical point and a first-order phase transition. The coupled dynamics of the sigma field and the quarks is derived selfconsistently. Hereby, the sigma field evolves according to a semiclassical Langevin equation of motion, while the evolution of the quarks is described fluid dynamically in order to model the expansion of a hot fireball in heavy-ion collisions. Dissipative processes and fluctuations in the Langevin equation are allowed under the assumption of energy-momentum conservation of the coupled system. We study the evolution of the constituent quark masses in this nonequilibrium set up.

UrQMD calculations of two-pion HBT correlations in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV

Two-pion Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlations for central Pb-Pb collisions at the Large-Hadron-Collider (LHC) energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV are investigated for the first time with the microscopic transport model UrQMD (Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics). The transverse momentum dependence of the Pratt-Bertsch HBT radii is extracted from a three dimensional Gaussian fit to the correlator in the longitudinal co-moving system (LCMS). Qualitative agreement with the ALICE data is obtained, however $R_{out}$ is overpredicted by nearly 50%. The LHC results are also compared to data from the STAR experiment at RHIC. For both energies we find that the calculated $R_O/R_S$ ratio is always larger than data, indicating that the emission in the model is less explosive than observed in the data.

Examination of scaling of Hanbury-Brown--Twiss radii with charged particle multiplicity

In the light of the recent LHC data on proton-proton and lead-lead collisions we examine the question of the multiplicity scaling of HBT radii in relativistic nuclei and particle interactions. Within the UrQMD transport approach we study a large variety of system sizes at different beam energies and extract the HBT radii. In the calculation, we find a good scaling of the radii as a function of charged particle multiplicity, if the change in the multiplicity is caused by a change of centrality at the same energy. However, the scaling is only approximate when the energy, $\sqrt{s}$, is changed and breaks down when comparing pp to AA reactions.

Formation time dependence of femtoscopic $ππ$ correlations in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=7 TeV

We investigate femtoscopic $ππ$ correlations using the UrQMD approach combined with a correlation afterburner. The dependence of $ππ$ correlations on the charged particle multiplicity and formation time in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 7 TeV is explored and compared to present ALICE data. The data allows to constrain the formation time in the string fragmentation to $τ_f \leq 0.8$ fm/c.

Suppression of high transverse momenta hadrons in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC

Hadron production and their suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC at a center-of-mass energy of s_NN = 2.76 TeV are studied within a multiphase transport (AMPT) model whose initial conditions are obtained from the recently updated HIJING 2.0 model. The centrality dependence of charged hadron multiplicity dN_ch/deta at midrapidity was found quite sensitive to the largely uncertain gluon shadowing parameter s_g that determines the nuclear modification of the gluon distribution. We find final-state parton scatterings reduce considerably hadron yield at midrapidity and enforces a smaller gluon shadowing to be consistent with dN_ch/deta data at LHC. With such a constrained parton shadowing, charged hadron and neutral pion production over a wide transverse momenta range are investigated in AMPT. Relative to nucleon-nucleon collisions, the particle yield in central heavy ion collisions is suppressed due to parton energy loss. While the calculated magnitude and pattern of suppression is found consistent with that measured in Au+Au collisions at s_NN = 0.2 TeV at RHIC, at the LHC energy the suppression is overpredicted which may imply the medium formed at LHC is less opaque than expected from simple RHIC extrapolations. Reduction of the QCD coupling constant alpha_s by ~30% in the higher temperature plasma formed at LHC as compared to that at RHIC was found to reproduce the measured suppression at LHC.

Neutrino oscillations as a novel probe for a minimal length

We suggest that the presence of a quantum gravity induced minimal length can be explored using neutrino oscillation probabilities. Neutrinos seem ideally suited for this investigation because they can propagate freely over large distances and can therefore pile up minimal length effects beyond detectable thresholds. We determine the modified survival probability in a scenario with a minimal length and find deviations from the classical behaviour for high energies. We find that for the currently available experimental statistics the deviations from the standard oscillations do only allow for a bound of $\ell^{-1}\gtrsim 10 \mathrm{GeV}$ from MINOS data. On the other hand, oscillations of high-energy neutrinos emitted by galactic and extragalactic sources are strongly suppressed, leading to a possible observation of quantum gravity effects at neutrino telescopes such as IceCube and ANTARES.

Quantum Gravity signals in neutrino oscillations

We investigate the effect of a Quantum Gravity-induced minimal length on neutrino oscillations. The minimal length is implemented in a phenomenological framework, allowing us to make predictions independently of any fundamental approach. We obtain clear minimal length signatures and discuss their observability in current and future experiments. We present an overview over other scenarios in which the minimal length leaves its signature and show new results concerning minimal length thermodynamics.

Micro black holes in the laboratory

The possibility of creating microscopic black holes is one of the most exciting predictions for the LHC, with potentially major consequences for our current understanding of physics. We briefly review the theoretical motivation for micro black hole production, and our understanding of their subsequent evolution. Recent work on modelling the radiation from quantum-gravity-corrected black holes is also discussed.

The impact of dissipation and noise on fluctuations in chiral fluid dynamics

We investigate the nonequilibrium evolution of the sigma field coupled to a fluid dynamic expansion of a hot fireball to model the chiral phase transition in heavy-ion collisions. The dissipative processes and fluctuations are allowed under the assumption that the total energy of the coupled system is conserved. We use the linear sigma model with constituent quarks to investigate the effects of the chiral phase transition on the equilibration and excitation of the sigma modes. The quark fluid acts as a heat bath in local thermal equilibrium and the sigma field evolves according to a semiclassical stochastic Langevin equation of motion. The effects of supercooling and reheating in a first order phase transition are observed when the sigma field relaxes to equilibrium with the quark fluid. Nonequilibrium fluctuations at the first order phase transition lead to an increase in the intensity of sigma fluctuations in comparison to a scenario with a critical point.

Equilibration and relaxation times at the chiral phase transition including reheating

We investigate the relaxational dynamics of the order parameter of chiral symmetry breaking, the sigma mean-field, with a heat bath consisting of quarks and antiquarks. A semiclassical stochastic Langevin equation of motion is obtained from the linear sigma model with constituent quarks. The equilibration of the system is studied for a first order phase transition and a critical point, where a different behavior is found. At the first order phase transition we observe the phase coexistence and at a critical point the phenomenon of critical slowing down with large relaxation times. We go beyond existing Langevin studies and include reheating of the heat bath by determining the energy dissipation during the relaxational process. The energy of the entire system is conserved. In a critical point scenario we again observe critical slowing down.

Nonequilibrium chiral fluid dynamics including dissipation and noise

We present a consistent theoretical approach for the study of nonequilibrium effects in chiral fluid dynamics within the framework of the linear sigma model with constituent quarks. Treating the quarks as an equilibrated heat bath we use the influence functional formalism to obtain a Langevin equation for the sigma field. This allows us to calculate the explicit form of the damping coefficient and the noise correlators. For a selfconsistent derivation of both the dynamics of the sigma field and the quark fluid we have to employ the 2PI (two-particle irreducible) effective action formalism. The energy dissipation from the field to the fluid is treated in the exact formalism of the 2PI effective action where a conserved energy-momentum tensor can be constructed. We derive its form and comment on approximations generating additional terms in the energy-momentum balance of the entire system.

Hybrid approaches to heavy ion collisions and future perspectives

We present the current status of hybrid approaches to describe heavy ion collisions and their future challenges and perspectives. First we present a hybrid model combining a Boltzmann transport model of hadronic degrees of freedom in the initial and final state with an optional hydrodynamic evolution during the dense and hot phase. Second, we present a recent extension of the hydrodynamical model to include fluctuations near the phase transition by coupling a chiral field to the hydrodynamic evolution.

Low mass dimuons within a hybrid approach

We analyse dilepton emission from hot and dense hadronic matter using a hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for the description of heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies. Focusing on the enhancement with respect to the contribution from long-lived hadron decays after freeze-out observed at the SPS in the low mass region of the dilepton spectra (often referred to as "the excess"), the relative importance of the emission from the equilibrium and the non-equilibrium stages is discussed.

Correspondence between HBT radii and the emission zone in non-central heavy ion collisions

In non-central collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy ions, the freeze-out distribution is anisotropic, and its major longitudinal axis may be tilted away from the beam direction. The shape and orientation of this distribution are particularly interesting, as they provide a snapshot of the evolving source and reflect the space-time aspect of anisotropic flow. Experimentally, this information is extracted by measuring pion HBT radii as a function of angle with respect to the reaction plane. Existing formulae relating the oscillations of the radii and the freezeout anisotropy are in principle only valid for Gaussian sources with no collective flow. With a realistic transport model of the collision, which generates flow and non-Gaussian sources, we find that these formulae approximately reflect the anisotropy of the freezeout distribution.

Transport and hydrodynamic calculations of direct photons at FAIR

The microscopic transport model UrQMD and a micro+macro hybrid model are used to calculate direct photon spectra from U+U-collisions at Elab = 35 AGeV as will be measured by the CBM-collaboration at FAIR. In the hybrid model, the intermediate high-density part of the nuclear interaction is described with ideal 3+1-dimensional hydrodynamics. Different equations of state of the matter created in the heavy-ion collisions are investigated and the resulting spectra of direct photons are predicted. The emission patterns of direct photons in space and time are discussed.

Non-equilibrium fluctuations at the QCD phase transition

We study the chiral phase transition by the non-equilibrium propagation of the sigma field. A quark fluid acts as a heat bath in local thermal equilibrium and evolves fluid dynamically. We allow for dissipative processes and fluctuations since the sigma field is propagated according to a Langevin-type equation of motion. Non-equilibrium fluctuations at the first order phase transition lead to an increase in the intensity of sigma excitations.
