Topological Woodward-Hoffmann classification for cycloadditions in polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylides

The study of cycloaddition mechanisms is central to the fabrication of extended sp2 carbon nanostructures. Reaction modeling in this context has focused mostly on putative, energetically preferred, exothermic products with limited consideration for symmetry allowed or forbidden mechanistic effects. Here, we introduce a scheme for classifying symmetry-forbidden reaction coordinates in Woodward-Hoffmann correlation diagrams. Topological classifiers grant access to the study of reaction pathways and correlation diagrams in the same footing, for the purpose of elucidating mechanisms and products of polycyclic aromatic azomethine ylide (PAMY) cycloadditions with pentacene-yielding polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with an isoindole core in the solid-state and on surfaces as characterized by mass spectrometry and scanning tunneling microscopy, respectively. By means of a tight-binding reaction model and density functional theory (DFT) we find topologically-allowed pathways if a product is endothermic, and topologically-forbidden if a product is exothermic. Our work unveils topological classification as a crucial element for reaction modeling for nanographene engineering, and highlights its fundamental role in the design of cycloadditions in on-surface and solid-state chemical reactions, while underscoring that exothermic pathways can be topologically-forbidden.

On-surface synthesis of nitrogen-doped nanographenes with 5-7 membered rings

We report on the formation of nitrogen-doped nanographenes containing five- and seven-membered rings by thermally induced cyclodehydrogenation on the Au(111) surface. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and supported by calculations, we investigated the structure of precursor and targets, as well as of intermediates. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows that the electronic properties of the target nanographenes are strongly influenced by the additional formation of non-hexagonal rings.

Gauge Mediated Proton Decay in a Renormalizable SUSY SO(10) with Realistic Mass Matrices

Proton decay via d=5 operators is excluded by now not only in the framework of SUSY SU(5) but also its extensions like SUSY SO(10) are on the verge of being inconsistent with d=5 decays. It is reasonable therefore to suppress, e.g. by a symmetry, the d=5 operators and to consider gauge boson induced d=6 decays. This is suggested in several recent papers in the framework of models with a lighter $ M_X$. We discuss here explicitly the fermionic sector of such a renormalizable SUSY SO(10) with realistic mass matrices. We find that the recently ``observed'' large leptonic mixing leads to an enhancement of the nucleon decay channels involving $μ$'s and in particular the $μ^+π^o$, $μ^+π^-$ modes.

Phase space embedding of electrocardiograms

We study properties of the human electrocardiogram under the working hypothesis that fluctuations beyond the regular structure of single cardiac cycles are unpredictable. On this background we discuss the possibility to use the phase space embedding method for this kind of signal. In particular, the specific nature of the stochastic or high dimensional component allows to use phase space embeddings for certain signal processing tasks. As practical applications, we discuss noise filtering, fetal ECG extraction, and the automatic detection of clinically relevant features. The main purpose of the paper is to connect results of embedding theory which had not been previously applied in practise, and practical applications which had not yet been justified theoretically.

Nonlinear projective filtering in a data stream

We introduce a modified algorithm to perform nonlinear filtering of a time series by locally linear phase space projections. Unlike previous implementations, the algorithm can be used not only for a posteriori processing but includes the possibility to perform real time filtering in a data stream. The data base that represents the phase space structure generated by the data is updated dynamically. This also allows filtering of non-stationary signals and dynamic parameter adjustment. We discuss exemplary applications, including the real time extraction of the fetal electrocardiogram from abdominal recordings.
