Pseudocomplementation in rings of continuous functions

We study rings of real-valued continuous functions in terms of pseudocomplementation conditions on various lattices attached to their prime spectrum. We fully characterize pseudocomplementation in all cases and have an almost complete characterization of relative pseudocomplementation.

Subfitness in distributive (semi)lattices

We investigate whether the set of subfit elements of a distributive semilattice is an ideal. This question was raised by the second author at the BLAST conference in 2022. We show that in general it has a negative solution, however if the semilattice is a lattice, then the solution is positive. This is somewhat unexpected since, as we show, a semilattice is subfit if and only if so is its distributive lattice envelope.

On ordinary differentially large fields

We provide a characterisation of differentially large fields in arbitrary characteristic and a single derivation in the spirit of Blum axioms for differentially closed fields. In the case of characteristic zero, we use these axioms to characterise differential largeness in terms of being existentially closed in the differential algebraic Laurent series ring, and we prove that any large field of infinite transcendence degree can be expanded to a differentially large field even under certain prescribed constant fields. As an application, we show that the theory of proper dense pairs of models of a complete and modelcomplete theory of large fields, is a complete theory. As a further consequence of the expansion result we show that there is no real closed and differential field that has a prime model extension in closed ordered differential fields, unless it is itself a closed ordered differential field.

Differentially Large Fields

We introduce the notion of differential largeness for fields equipped with several commuting derivations (as an analogue to largeness of fields). We lay out the foundations of this new class of "tame" differential fields. We state several characterizations and exhibit plenty of examples and applications. Our results strongly indicate that differentially large fields will play a key role in differential field arithmetic. For instance, we characterise differential largeness in terms of being existentially closed in their power series field (furnished with natural derivations), we give explicit constructions of differentially large fields in terms of iterated powers series, we prove that the class of differentially large fields is elementary, and we show that differential largeness is preserved under algebraic extensions, therefore showing that their algebraic closure is differentially closed.

Differential Weil descent

In this short note a differential version of the classical Weil descent is established in all characteristics. This yields a ready-to-deploy tool of differential restriction of scalars for differential varieties over finite differential field extensions.

Defining integer valued functions in rings of continuous definable functions over a topological field

Let K be an expansion of either an ordered field or a valued field. Given a definable set X $\subseteq$ K m let C(X) be the ring of continuous definable functions from X to K. Under very mild assumptions on the geometry of X and on the structure K, in particular when K is o-minimal or P-minimal, or an expansion of a local field, we prove that the ring of integers Z is interpretable in C(X). If K is o-minimal and X is definably connected of pure dimension 2, then C(X) defines the subring Z. If K is P-minimal and X has no isolated points, then there is a discrete ring Z contained in K and naturally isomorphic to Z, such that the ring of functions f $\in$ C(X) which take values in Z is definable in C(X).

A Model Theoretic Perspective on Matrix Rings

In this paper natural necessary and sufficient conditions for quantifier elimination of matrix rings $M_n(K)$ in the language of rings expanded by two unary functions, naming the trace and transposition, are identified. This is used together with invariant theory to prove quantifier elimination when $K$ is an intersection of real closed fields. On the other hand, it is shown that finding a natural \textit{definable} expansion with quantifier elimination of the theory of $M_n({\mathbb C})$ is closely related to the infamous simultaneous conjugacy problem in matrix theory. Finally, for various natural structures describing dimension-free matrices it is shown that no such elimination results can hold by establishing undecidability results.

Differential Weil Descent and Differentially Large Fields

A differential version of the classical Weil descent is established in all characteristics. It yields a theory of differential restriction of scalars for differential varieties over finite differential field extensions. This theory is then used to prove that in characteristic 0, \textit{differential largeness} (a notion introduced here as an analogue to largeness of fields) is preserved under algebraic extensions. This provides many new differential fields with minimal differential closures. A further application is Kolchin-density of rational points in differential algebraic groups defined over differentially large fields.

Interpreting formulas of divisible lattice ordered abelian groups

We show that a large class of divisible abelian $\ell$-groups (lattice ordered groups) of continuous functions is interpretable (in a certain sense) in the lattice of the zero sets of these functions. This has various applications to the model theory of these $\ell$-groups, including decidability results.

On the strength of some topological lattices

We study the model theoretic strength of various lattices that occur naturally in topology, like closed (semi-linear or semi-algebraic or convex) sets. The method is based on weak monadic second order logic and sharpens previous results by Grzegorczyk. We also answers a question of Grzegorczyk on the 'algebra of convex sets'.

Comparison of Exponential-Logarithmic and Logarithmic-Exponential series

We explain how the field of logarithmic-exponential series constructed in \cite{DMM1} and \cite {DMM2} embeds as an exponential field in any field of exponential-logarithmic series constructed in \cite{KK1}, \cite {K} and \cite {KS}. On the other hand, we explain why no field of exponential-logarithmic series embeds in the field of logarithmic-exponential series. This clarifies why the two constructions are intrinsically different, in the sense that they produce non-isomorphic models of Th$(\R_{an, exp})$; the elementary theory of the ordered field of real numbers, with the exponential function and restricted analytic functions.

The elementary theory of Dedekind cuts in polynomially bounded structures

Let M be a polynomially bounded, o-minimal structure with archimedean prime model, for example if M is a real closed field. Let C be a convex and unbounded subset of M. We determine the first order theory of the structure M expanded by the set C. We do this also over any given set of parameters from M, which yields a description of all subsets of M^n, definable in the expanded structure.
