Homogenisation and the Weak Operator Topology

This article surveys results that relate homogenisation problems for partial differential equations and convergence in the weak operator topology of a suitable choice of linear operators. More precisely, well-known notions like $G$-convergence, $H$-convergence as well as the recent notion of nonlocal $H$-convergence are discussed and characterised by certain convergence statements under the weak operator topology. Having introduced and described these notions predominantly made for static or variational type problems, we further study these convergences in the context of dynamic equations like the heat equation, the wave equation or Maxwell's equations. The survey is intended to clarify the ideas and highlight the operator theoretic aspects of homogenisation theory in the autonomous case.

A Hilbert space approach to difference equations

We consider general difference equations $u_{n+1} = F(u)_n$ for $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ on exponentially weighted $\ell_2$ spaces of two-sided Hilbert space valued sequences $u$ and discuss initial value problems. As an application of the Hilbert space approach, we characterize exponential stability of linear equations and prove a stable manifold theorem for causal nonlinear difference equations.

Homogenisation of parabolic/hyperbolic media

We consider an evolutionary problem with rapidly oscillating coefficients. This causes the problem to change frequently between a parabolic and an hyperbolic state. We prove convergence of the homogenisation process in the unit square and present a numerical method to deal with approximations of the resulting equations. A numerical study finalises the contribution.

Nonlocal $H$-convergence

We introduce the concept of nonlocal $H$-convergence. For this we employ the theory of abstract closed complexes of operators in Hilbert spaces. We show uniqueness of the nonlocal $H$-limit as well as a corresponding compactness result. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of the introduced concept, which implies that local and nonlocal $H$-convergence coincide for multiplication operators. We provide applications to both nonlocal and nonperiodic fully time-dependent 3D Maxwell's equations on rough domains. The material law for Maxwell's equations may also rapidly oscillate between eddy current type approximations and their hyperbolic non-approximated counter parts. Applications to models in nonlocal response theory used in quantum theory and the description of meta-materials, to fourth order elliptic problems as well as to homogenisation problems on Riemannian manifolds are provided.

On the Well-posedness of a Class of Non-Autonomous SPDEs: An Operator-Theoretical Perspective

We further elaborate on the solvability of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). We shall discuss non-autonomous partial differential equations with an abstract realization of the stochastic integral on the right-hand side. Our approach allows the treatment of equations with mixed type, where classical solution strategies fail to work. The approach extends prior observations in [Süß, A. \& Waurick, M. A Solution Theory for a General Class of SPDEs. \emph{Stochastics and Partial Differential Equations: Analysis and Computations}, 2017, 5, 278-318], where the respective results were obtained for linear autonomous equations and (multiplicative) white noise.

Some remarks on the notions of boundary systems and boundary triple(t)s

In this note we show that if a boundary system in the sense of (Schubert et al. 2015) gives rise to any skew-self-adjoint extension, then it induces a boundary triplet and the classification of all extensions given by (Schubert et al. 2015) coincides with the skew-symmetric version of the classical characterization due to (Gorbachuk et al. 1991). On the other hand we show that for every skew-symmetric operator there is a natural boundary system which leads to an explicit description of at least one maximal dissipative extension. This is in particular also valid in the case that no boundary triplet exists for this operator.

A note on perturbations of $C_0$-semigroups

This article deals with a variation of constants type inequality for semigroups acting consistently on a scale of Banach spaces. This inequality can be characterized by a corresponding (easy to verify) inequality for their generators. The results have applications to heat kernel estimates and provide a unified perspective to estimates of these type. Moreover, bi-continuous semigroups can be treated as well.

On higher index differential-algebraic equations in infinite dimensions

We consider initial value problems for differential-algebraic equations in a possibly infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Assuming a growth condition for the associated operator pencil, we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions for arbitrary initial values in a distributional sense. Moreover, we construct a nested sequence of subspaces for initial values in order to obtain classical solutions.

On Differential-Algebraic Equations in Infinite Dimensions

We consider a class of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) with index zero in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. We define a space of consistent initial values, which lead to classical continuously differential solutions for the associated DAE. Moreover, we show that for arbitrary initial values we obtain mild solutions for the associated problem. We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of solutions for both problems. In particular, we provide a characterisation for exponential stability and exponential dichotomies in terms of the spectrum of the associated operator pencil.

Resolvent estimates in homogenisation of periodic problems of fractional elasticity

We provide operator-norm convergence estimates for solutions to a time-dependent equation of fractional elasticity in one spatial dimension, with rapidly oscillating coefficients that represent the material properties of a viscoelastic composite medium. Assuming periodicity in the coefficients, we prove operator-norm convergence estimates for an operator fibre decomposition obtained by applying to the original fractional elasticity problem the Fourier--Laplace transform in time and Gelfand transform in space. We obtain estimates on each fibre that are uniform in the quasimomentum of the decomposition and in the period of oscillations of the coefficients as well as quadratic with respect to the spectral variable. On the basis of these uniform estimates we derive operator-norm-type convergence estimates for the original fractional elasticity problem, for a class of sufficiently smooth densities of applied forces.

Fibre Homogenisation

In this article we present a novel method for studying the asymptotic behaviour, with order-sharp error estimates, of the resolvents of parameter-dependent operator families. The method is applied to the study of differential equations with rapidly oscillating coefficients in the context of second-order PDE systems and the Maxwell system. This produces a non-standard homogenisation result that is characterised by `fibre-wise' homogenisation of the related Floquet-Bloch PDEs. These fibre-homogenised resolvents are shown to be asymptotically equivalent to a whole class of operator families, including those obtained by standard homogenisation methods.

A Functional Analytic Perspective to the div-curl Lemma

We present an abstract functional analytic formulation of the celebrated $\dive$-$\curl$ lemma found by F.~Murat and L.~Tartar. The viewpoint in this note relies on sequences for operators in Hilbert spaces. Hence, we draw the functional analytic relation of the div-curl lemma to differential forms and other sequences such as the $\Grad\grad$-sequence discovered recently by D.~Pauly and W.~Zulehner in connection with the biharmonic operator.

Numerical methods for changing type systems

In this note we develop a numerical method for partial differential equations with changing type. Our method is based on a unified solution theory found by Rainer Picard for several linear equations from mathematical physics. Parallel to the solution theory already developed, we frame our numerical method in a discontinuous Galerkin approach in space-time with certain exponentially weighted spaces.

A Solution Theory for a General Class of SPDEs

In this article we present a way of treating stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative noise by rewriting them as stochastically perturbed evolutionary equations in the sense of \cite{picardbook}, where a general solution theory for deterministic evolutionary equations has been developed. This allows us to present a unified solution theory for a general class of SPDEs which we believe has great potential for further generalizations. We will show that many standard stochastic PDEs fit into this class as well as many other SPDEs such as the stochastic Maxwell equation and time-fractional stochastic PDEs with multiplicative noise on sub-domains of $\Rd$. The approach is in spirit similar to the approach in \cite{dapratozabczyk}, but complementing it in the sense that it does not involve semi-group theory and allows for an effective treatment of coupled systems of SPDEs. In particular, the existence of a (regular) fundamental solution or Green's function is not required.

On the weighted Gauß--Radau Quadrature

In this short note, we collect some facts on the weighted Gauß--Radau quadrature. In particular, we focus on the location of the Gauß--Radau points being a continuous function of the $L^1$-weighting function.

A remark on local activity and passivity

We study local activity and its opposite, local passivity, for linear systems and show that generically an eigenvalue of the system matrix with positive real part implies local activity. If all state variables are port variables we prove that the system is locally active if and only if the system matrix is not dissipative. Local activity was suggested by Leon Chua as an indicator for the emergence of complexity of nonlinear systems. We propose an abstract scheme which indicates how local activity could be applied to nonlinear systems and list open questions about possible consequences for complexity.

On the continuous dependence on the coefficients of evolutionary equations

In an abstract Hilbert space setting, we discuss many linear phenomena of mathematical physics. The functional analytic framework presented is used to address continuous dependence of the solution operators $\mathcal{S}(\mathcal{M})$ of certain (linear partial differential) equations on the coefficients $\mathcal{M}$. For this, we introduce a particular class of coefficients $\mathcal{M}$ and study the (nonlinear) mapping $\mathcal{M}\mapsto \mathcal{S}(\mathcal{M})$. We provide criteria that guarantee the continuity of $\mathcal{S}(\cdot)$ under the norm, the strong, and the weak operator topology. We exemplify our findings in non-autonomous electro-magnetic theory, thermodynamics and acoustics.
