Compact Bell inequalities for multipartite experiments

A method for construction of the multipartite Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) type Bell inequalities, for the case of local binary observables, is presented. The standard CHSH-type Bell inequalities can be obtained as special cases. A unified framework to establish all kinds of CHSH-type Bell inequalities by increasing step by step the number of observers is given. As an application, compact Bell inequalities, for eight observers, involving just four correlation functions are proposed. They require much less experimental effort than standard methods and thus is experimentally friendly in multi-photon experiments.

Filtering of the absolute value of photon-number difference for two-mode macroscopic quantum superpositions

We discuss a device capable of filtering out two-mode states of light with mode populations differing by more than a certain threshold, while not revealing which mode is more populated. It would allow engineering of macroscopic quantum states of light in a way which is preserving specific superpositions. As a result, it would enhance optical phase estimation with these states as well as distinguishability of "macroscopic" qubits. We propose an optical scheme, which is a relatively simple, albeit non-ideal, operational implementation of such a filter. It uses tapping of the original polarization two-mode field, with a polarization neutral beam splitter of low reflectivity. Next, the reflected beams are suitably interfered on a polarizing beam splitter. It is oriented such that it selects unbiased polarization modes with respect to the original ones. The more an incoming two-mode Fock state is unequally populated, the more the polarizing beam splitter output modes are equally populated. This effect is especially pronounced for highly populated states. Additionally, for such states we expect strong population correlations between the original fields and the tapped one. Thus, after a photon-number measurement of the polarizing beam splitter outputs, a feed-forward loop can be used to let through a shutter the field, which was transmitted by the tapping beam splitter. This happens only if the counts at the outputs are roughly equal. In such a case, the transmitted field differs strongly in occupation number of the two modes, while information on which mode is more populated is non-existent (a necessary condition for preserving superpositions).

N-particle nonclassicality without N-particle correlations

Most of known multipartite Bell inequalities involve correlation functions for all subsystems. They are useless for entangled states without such correlations. We give a method of derivation of families of Bell inequalities for N parties, which involve, e.g., only (N-1)-partite correlations, but still are able to detect proper N-partite entanglement. We present an inequality which reveals five-partite entanglement despite only four-partite correlations. Classes of inequalities introduced here can be put into a handy form of a single non-linear inequality. An example is given of an N qubit state, which strongly violates such an inequality, despite having no N-qubit correlations. This surprising property might be of potential value for quantum information tasks.

Multisetting Bell inequalities for $N$ spins-1 avoiding KS contradiction

Bell's theorem for systems more complicated than two qubits faces a hidden, as yet undiscussed, problem. One of the methods to derive Bell's inequalities is to assume existence of joint probability distribution for measurement results for all settings in the given experiment. However for spins-1, one faces the problem that eigenvalues of observables do not allow a consistent algebra if one allows all possible settings on each side (Bell 1966 contradiction), or some specific sets (leading to a Kochen-Specker 1967 contradiction). We show here that by choosing special set of settings which never lead to inconsistent algebra of eigenvalues, one can still derive multisetting Bell inequalities, and that they are robustly violated. Violation factors increase with the number of subsystems. The inequalities involve only spin observables, we do not allow all possible qutrit observables, still the violations are strong.

Feasible optical weak measurements of complementary observables via a single Hamiltonian

A general formalism for joint weak measurements of a pair of complementary observables is given. The standard process of optical three-wave mixing in a nonlinear crystal (such as in parametric down-conversion) is suitable for such tasks. To obtain the weak value of a variable $A$ one performs weak measurements twice, with different initial states of the "meter" field. This seems to be a drawback, but as a compensation we get for free the weak value of a complementary variable $B$. The scheme is tunable and versatile: one has access to a continuous set of possible weak measurements of pair of observables. The scheme increases signal-to-noise ratio with respect to the case without postselection.

Homogenization of Bell inequalities

A technique, which we call homogenization, is applied to transform CH-type Bell inequalities, which contain lower order correlations, into CHSH-type Bell inequalities, which are defined for highest order correlation functions. A homogenization leads to inequalities involving more settings, that is a choice of one more observable is possible for each party. We show that this technique preserves the tightness of Bell inequalities: a homogenization of a tight CH-type Bell inequality is still a tight CHSH-type Bell inequality. As an example we obtain $3\times3\times3$ CHSH-type Bell inequalities by homogenization of $2\times 2\times 2$ CH-type Bell inequalities derived by Sliwa in [Phys. Lett. A {\bf 317}, 165 (2003)].

CHSH type Bell inequalities involving a party with two or three local binary settings

We construct a simple algorithm to generate any CHSH type Bell inequality involving a party with two local binary measurements from two CHSH type inequalities without this party. The algorithm readily generalizes to situations, where the additional observer uses three measurement settings. There, each inequality involving the additional party is constructed from three inequalities with this party excluded. With this generalization at hand, we construct and analyze new symmetric inequalities for four observers and three experimental settings per observer.

Extending Bell inequalities to more parties

We describe a method of extending Bell inequalities from $n$ to $n+1$ parties and formulate sufficient conditions for our method to produce tight inequalities from tight inequalities. The method is non trivial in the sense that the inequalities produced by it, when applied to entangled quantum states may be violated stronger than the original inequalities. In other words, the method is capable of generating inequalities which are more powerfull indicators of non-classical correlations than the original inequalities.

Discriminating multi-partite entangled states

The variety of multi-partite entangled states enables numerous applications in novel quantum information tasks. In order to compare the suitability of different states from a theoretical point of view classifications have been introduced. Accordingly, here we derive criteria and demonstrate how to experimentally discriminate an observed state against the ones of certain other classes of multi-partite entangled states. Our method, originating in Bell inequalities, adds an important tool for the characterization of multi-party entanglement.
