Machine-learning based three-qubit gate for realization of a Toffoli gate with cQED-based transmon systems

We use machine learning techniques to design a 50 ns three-qubit flux-tunable controlled-controlled-phase gate with fidelity of >99.99% for nearest-neighbor coupled transmons in circuit quantum electrodynamics architectures. We explain our gate design procedure where we enforce realistic constraints, and analyze the new gate's robustness under decoherence, distortion, and random noise. Our controlled-controlled-phase gate in combination with two single-qubit gates realizes a Toffoli gate which is widely used in quantum circuits, logic synthesis, quantum error correction, and quantum games.

A Reed Muller-based approach for optimization of general binary quantum multiplexers

Previous work has provided methods for decomposing unitary matrices to series of quantum multiplexers, but the multiplexers created in this way are highly non-minimal. This paper presents a new approach for optimizing quantum multiplexers with arbitrary single-qubit quantum target functions. For quantum multiplexers, we define standard forms and two types of new forms: fixed polarity quantum forms (FPQF) and Kronecker quantum forms (KQF), which are analogous to Minterm Sum of Products forms, Fixed Polarity Reed-Muller (FPRM) forms, and Kronecker Reed-Muller (KRM) forms, respectively, for classical logic functions. Drawing inspiration from the usage of butterfly diagrams for FPRM and KRM forms, we devise a method to exhaustively construct all FPQF and KQF forms. Thus, the new forms can be used to optimize quantum circuits with arbitrary target unitary matrices, rather than only multi-controlled NOT gates such as CNOT, CCNOT, and their extensions. Experimental results on FPQF and KQF forms, as well as FPRM and KRM classical forms, applied to various target gates such as NOT, V, V+, Hadamard, and Pauli rotations, demonstrate that FPQF and KQF forms greatly reduce the gate cost of quantum multiplexers in both randomly generated data and FPRM benchmarks.

Minimization of Quantum Circuits using Quantum Operator Forms

In this paper we present a method for minimizing reversible quantum circuits using the Quantum Operator Form (QOF); a new representation of quantum circuit and of quantum-realized reversible circuits based on the CNOT, CV and CV$^\dagger$ quantum gates. The proposed form is a quantum extension to the well known Reed-Muller but unlike the Reed-Muller form, the QOF allows the usage of different quantum gates. Therefore QOF permits minimization of quantum circuits by using properties of different gates than only the multi-control Toffoli gates. We introduce a set of minimization rules and a pseudo-algorithm that can be used to design circuits with the CNOT, CV and CV$^\dagger$ quantum gates. We show how the QOF can be used to minimize reversible quantum circuits and how the rules allow to obtain exact realizations using the above mentioned quantum gates.

A Cost Minimization Approach to Synthesis of Linear Reversible Circuits

This paper presents a heuristic cost minimization approach to synthesizing linear reversible circuits. Two bidirectional linear reversible circuit synthesis methods are introduced, the Alternating Elimination with Cost Minimization method (AECM) and the Multiple CNOT Gate method (MCG). Algorithms, example syntheses, and extensions to these methods are presented. An MCG variant which incorporates line reordering is introduced. Tests comparing the new cost minimization methods with the best known method for large circuits are presented. Results show that of the three methods MCG had the lowest average CNOT gate counts for linear reversible circuits up to 24 lines, and that AECM had the lowest counts between 28 and 60 lines.

Evolutionary Quantum Logic Synthesis of Boolean Reversible Logic Circuits Embedded in Ternary Quantum Space using Heuristics

It has been experimentally proven that realizing universal quantum gates using higher-radices logic is practically and technologically possible. We developed a Parallel Genetic Algorithm that synthesizes Boolean reversible circuits realized with a variety of quantum gates on qudits with various radices. In order to allow synthesizing circuits of medium sizes in the higher radix quantum space we performed the experiments using a GPU accelerated Genetic Algorithm. Using the accelerated GA we compare heuristic improvements to the mutation process based on cost minimization, on the adaptive cost of the primitives and improvements due to Baldwinian vs. Lamarckian GA. We also describe various fitness function formulations that allowed for various realizations of well known universal Boolean reversible or quantum-probabilistic circuits.

Fault testing quantum switching circuits

Test pattern generation is an electronic design automation tool that attempts to find an input (or test) sequence that, when applied to a digital circuit, enables one to distinguish between the correct circuit behavior and the faulty behavior caused by particular faults. The effectiveness of this classical method is measured by the fault coverage achieved for the fault model and the number of generated vectors, which should be directly proportional to test application time. This work address the quantum process validation problem by considering the quantum mechanical adaptation of test pattern generation methods used to test classical circuits. We found that quantum mechanics allows one to execute multiple test vectors concurrently, making each gate realized in the process act on a complete set of characteristic states in space/time complexity that breaks classical testability lower bounds.

Exact Synthesis of 3-Qubit Quantum Circuits from Non-Binary Quantum Gates Using Multiple-Valued Logic and Group Theory

We propose an approach to optimally synthesize quantum circuits from non-permutative quantum gates such as Controlled-Square-Root-of-Not (i.e. Controlled-V). Our approach reduces the synthesis problem to multiple-valued optimization and uses group theory. We devise a novel technique that transforms the quantum logic synthesis problem from a multi-valued constrained optimization problem to a group permutation problem. The transformation enables us to utilize group theory to exploit the properties of the synthesis problem. Assuming a cost of one for each two-qubit gate, we found all reversible circuits with quantum costs of 4, 5, 6, etc, and give another algorithm to realize these reversible circuits with quantum gates.

Synthesis of multi-qudit Hybrid and d-valued Quantum Logic Circuits by Decomposition

Recent research in generalizing quantum computation from 2-valued qudits to d-valued qudits has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. A further generalization leads to quantum computing with hybrid qudits where two or more qudits have different finite dimensions. Advantages of hybrid and d-valued gates (circuits) and their physical realizations have been studied in detail by Muthukrishnan and Stroud (Physical Review A, 052309, 2000), Daboul et al. (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 36 2525-2536, 2003), and Bartlett et al (Physical Review A, Vol.65, 052316, 2002). In both cases, a quantum computation is performed when a unitary evolution operator, acting as a quantum logic gate, transforms the state of qudits in a quantum system. Unitary operators can be represented by square unitary matrices. If the system consists of a single qudit, then Tilma et al (J.Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35 (2002) 10467-10501) have shown that the unitary evolution matrix (gate) can be synthesized in terms of its Euler angle parameterization. However, if the quantum system consists of multiple qudits, then a gate may be synthesized by matrix decomposition techniques such as QR factorization and the Cosine-sine Decomposition (CSD). In this article, we present a CSD based synthesis method for n qudit hybrid quantum gates, and as a consequence, derive a CSD based synthesis method for n qudit gates where all the qudits have the same dimension.

Synthesis of Ternary Quantum Logic Circuits by Decomposition

Recent research in multi-valued logic for quantum computing has shown practical advantages for scaling up a quantum computer. Multivalued quantum systems have also been used in the framework of quantum cryptography, and the concept of a qudit cluster state has been proposed by generalizing the qubit cluster state. An evolutionary algorithm based synthesizer for ternary quantum circuits has recently been presented, as well as a synthesis method based on matrix factorization. In this paper, a recursive synthesis method for ternary quantum circuits based on the Cosine-Sine unitary matrix decomposition is presented.

Realizing Ternary Quantum Switching Networks without Ancilla Bits

This paper investigates the synthesis of quantum networks built to realize ternary switching circuits in the absence of ancilla bits. The results we established are twofold. The first shows that ternary Swap, ternary Not and ternary Toffoli gates are universal for the realization of arbitrary $n\times n$ ternary quantum switching networks without ancilla bits. The second result proves that all $n\times n$ quantum ternary networks can be generated by Not, Controlled-Not, Multiply-Two, and Toffoli gates. Our approach is constructive. key words: ternary quantum logic synthesis, quantum circuit optimization, group theory.
