Multi-dimensional hadron structure through the lens of gluon Wigner distribution

In this review, we present the current status of phenomenological research on constraining the multi-dimensional proton (and nucleus) structure at high energies through studies of the so-called gluon Wigner distributions. We provide a brief pedagogical introduction into the corresponding theoretical definitions and modelling of exclusive and diffractive scattering observables in terms of the Wigner distribution. Also, we present a detailed outlook into the existing and planned experimental measurements that attempt to constrain the Wigner distribution. We briefly overview possible interconnections between various manifestations of the gluon Wigner distribution emerging, for instance, in azimuthal-angle correlations in (semi)exclusive reactions and elliptic flow measurements in inclusive processes. We also summarise the current knowledge on the most important processes that would potentially enable one to constrain the elliptic gluon density in the proton and to separate it from the genuine effect of hydrodynamic evolution in the flow measurements.

White Paper on Forward Physics, BFKL, Saturation Physics and Diffraction

The goal of this whitepaper is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics. We discuss the occurrences of BFKL resummation effects in special final states, such as Mueller-Navelet jets, jet gap jets, and heavy quarkonium production. It further addresses TMD factorization at low x and the manifestation of a semi-hard saturation scale in (generalized) TMD PDFs. More theoretical aspects of low x physics, probes of the quark gluon plasma, as well as the possibility to use photon-hadron collisions at the LHC to constrain hadronic structure at low x, and the resulting complementarity between LHC and the EIC are also presented. We also briefly discuss diffraction at colliders as well as the possibility to explore further the electroweak theory in central exclusive events using the LHC as a photon-photon collider.

Performance studies of Time-of-Flight detectors at LHC

We present results of a toy model study of performance of the Time-of-Flight detectors integrated into forward proton detectors. The goal of the ToF device is to suppress effects of additional soft processes (so called pile-up) accompanying the hard-scale central diffractive event, characterized by two tagged leading protons, one on each side from the interaction point. The method of mitigation of the pile-up effects exemplified in this study is based on measuring a difference between arrival times of these leading protons at the forward proton detectors and hence estimate the z-coordinate of the production vertex. We evaluate effects of the the pile-up background by studying in detail its components, and estimate the performance of the ToF method as a function of the time and spatial resolution of the ToF device and of the number of pile-up interactions per bunch crossing. We also propose a new observable with a potential to efficiently separate central diffractive signal from the harsh pile-up environment.
