CMS search plans and sensitivity to new physics with dijets

CMS will use dijets to search for physics beyond the standard model during early LHC running. The inclusive jet cross section as a function of jet transverse momentum, with 10 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity, is sensitive to contact interactions beyond the reach of the Tevatron. The dijet mass distribution will be used to search for dijet resonances coming from new particles, for example an excited quark. Additional sensitivity to the existence of contact interactions or dijet resonances can be obtained by comparing dijet rates in two distinct pseudorapidity regions.

QCD and Top-Quark Results from the Tevatron

Selected recent QCD and top-quark results from the Tevatron are reviewed, aiming to illustrate progression from basic studies of QCD processes to verification of perturbative calculations and Monte Carlo simulation tools, and to their applications in more novel and complex cases, like top-quark studies and searches for new physics.

D0 measurement of the dijet azimuthal decorrelations

We present the D0 measurement of correlations in the azimuthal angle between the two largest transverse momentum jets produced in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV in the central rapidity region. The results are based on an inclusive dijet event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 150/pb. Data is in good agreement with next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and with tuned Pythia, Herwig, Alpgen and Sherpa event generators.

QCD at the Tevatron

Recent measurements of selected QCD processes at the Tevatron are reviewed and confronted with theoretical calculations. Results on inclusive jet production at large transverse momentum are compared to predictions from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. Kinematic distributions of jets with light and heavy flavor produced in association with electroweak bosons are compared to expectations from leading-order QCD calculations supplemented with parton-shower models. Properties of QCD radiation in hard-scatter events are investigated using azimuthal correlations between two leading jets in multi-jet events, while aspects of softer radiation are examined through properties of energy flow within jets. Finally, characteristics of soft interactions underlying the hard scatter are explored in the context of tuning the parameters of phenomenological models employed in QCD Monte Carlo event generators.

Multi-hadron Final States

This summary aims to highlight major results and insights gained from recent studies of hadronic final states in ep, ppbar, e+e-, as well as relevant theoretical developments, presented in the Multi-hadron final states parallel sessions of the DIS2002 workshop held in Krakow, Poland in May 2002.

Study of direct-photon and pion production

We present comparisons of high-pT photon and pion production in hadronic interactions with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We also comment on phenomenological models of kT smearing (which approximate effects of additional soft-gluon emission) and on the status of resummation calculations.

Photon and Pion Production at High $p_T$

We present a study of high-$p_T$ photon and pion production in hadronic interactions, focusing on a comparison of the yields with expectations from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD (NLO pQCD). We examine the impact of phenomenological models of $k_T$ smearing (which approximate effects of additional soft-gluon emission) on absolute predictions for photon and pion production and their ratio.
