General parity-odd CMB bispectrum estimation

We develop a methodology for estimating parity-odd bispectra in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This is achieved through the extension of the original separable modal methodology to parity-odd bispectrum domains ($\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm odd}$). Through numerical tests of the parity-odd modal decomposition with some theoretical bispectrum templates, we verify that the parity-odd modal methodology can successfully reproduce the CMB bispectrum, without numerical instabilities. We also present simulated non-Gaussian maps produced by modal-decomposed parity-odd bispectra, and show the consistency with the exact results. Our new methodology is applicable to all types of parity-odd temperature and polarization bispectra.

Signatures of anisotropic sources in the trispectrum of the cosmic microwave background

Soft limits of $N$-point correlation functions, in which one wavenumber is much smaller than the others, play a special role in constraining the physics of inflation. Anisotropic sources such as a vector field during inflation generate distinct angular dependence in all these correlators. In this paper we focus on the four-point correlator (the trispectrum $T$). We adopt a parametrization motivated by models in which the inflaton $ϕ$ is coupled to a vector field through a $I^2 \left( ϕ\right) F^2$ interaction, namely $T_ζ({\bf k}_1, {\bf k}_2, {\bf k}_3, {\bf k}_4) \equiv \sum_n d_n [ P_n(\hat{\bf k}_1 \cdot \hat{\bf k}_3) + P_n(\hat{\bf k}_1 \cdot \hat{\bf k}_{12}) + P_n(\hat{\bf k}_3 \cdot \hat{\bf k}_{12}) ] P_ζ(k_1) P_ζ(k_3) P_ζ(k_{12}) + (23~{\rm perm})$, where $P_n$ denotes the Legendre polynomials. This shape is enhanced when the wavenumbers of the diagonals of the quadrilateral are much smaller than the sides, ${\bf k}_i$. The coefficient of the isotropic part, $d_0$, is equal to $τ_{\rm NL}/6$ discussed in the literature. A $I^2 \left( ϕ\right) F^2$ interaction generates $d_2 = 2 d_0$ which is, in turn, related to the quadrupole modulation parameter of the power spectrum, $g_*$, as $d_2 \approx 14 |g_*| N^2$ with $N \approx 60$. We show that $d_0$ and $d_2$ can be equally well-constrained: the expected $68 \%$ CL error bars on these coefficients from a cosmic-variance-limited experiment measuring temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background up to $\ell_{\rm max}=2000$ are $δd_2 \approx 4 δd_0 = 105$. Therefore, we can reach $|g_*|=10^{-3}$ by measuring the angle-dependent trispectrum. The current upper limit on $τ_{\rm NL}$ from the ${\it Planck}$ temperature maps yields $|g_*|<0.02$ ($95 \%$ CL).

Parity violation in the CMB bispectrum by a rolling pseudoscalar

We investigate parity-violating signatures of temperature and polarization bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in an inflationary model where a rolling pseudoscalar produces large equilateral tensor non-Gaussianity. By a concrete computation based on full-sky formalism, it is shown that resultant CMB bispectra have nonzero signals in both parity-even $(\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm even})$ and parity-odd $(\ell_1 + \ell_2 + \ell_3 = {\rm odd})$ spaces, and are almost uncorrelated with usual scalar-mode equilateral bispectra. These characteristic signatures and polarization information help to detect such tensor non-Gaussianity. Use of both temperature and E-mode bispectra potentially improves of $400\%$ the detectability with respect to an analysis with temperature bispectrum alone. Considering B-mode bispectrum, the signal-to-noise ratio may be able to increase by 3 orders of magnitude. We present the $1σ$ uncertainties of a parameter depending on a coupling constant and a rolling condition for the pseudoscalar expected in the ${\it Planck}$ and the proposed PRISM experiments.

Polarization bispectrum for measuring primordial magnetic fields

We examine the potential of polarization bispectra of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to constrain primordial magnetic fields (PMFs). We compute all possible bispectra between temperature and polarization anisotropies sourced by PMFs and show that they are weakly correlated with well-known local-type and secondary ISW-lensing bispectra. From a Fisher analysis it is found that, owing to E-mode bispectra, in a cosmic-variance-limited experiment the expected uncertainty in the amplitude of magnetized bispectra is 80% improved in comparison with an analysis in terms of temperature auto-bispectrum alone. In the $\mathit{Planck}$ or the proposed PRISM experiment cases, we will be able to measure PMFs with strength 2.6 or 2.2 nG. PMFs also generate bispectra involving B-mode polarization, due to tensor-mode dependence. We also find that the B-mode bispectrum can reduce the uncertainty more drastically and hence PMFs comparable to or less than 1 nG may be measured in a PRISM-like experiment.

Generation of magnetic fields in Einstein-Aether gravity

Recently the lower bounds of the intergalactic magnetic fields $10^{-16} \sim 10^{-20}$ Gauss are set by gamma-ray observations while it is unlikely to generate such large scale magnetic fields through astrophysical processes. It is known that large scale magnetic fields could be generated if there exist cosmological vector mode perturbations in the primordial plasma. The vector mode, however, has only a decaying solution in General Relativity if the plasma consists of perfect fluids. In order to investigate a possible mechanism of magnetogenesis in the primordial plasma, here we consider cosmological perturbations in the Einstein-Aether gravity model, in which the aether field can act as a new source of vector metric perturbations and thus of magnetic fields. We estimate the angular power spectra of temperature and B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Anisotropies in this model and put a rough constraint on the aether field parameters from latest observations. We then estimate the power spectrum of associated magnetic fields around the recombination epoch within this limit. It is found that the spectrum has a characteristic peak at $k=0.1 h{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$, and at that scale the amplitude can be as large as $B\sim 10^{-22}$ Gauss where the upper bound comes from CMB temperature anisotropies. The magnetic fields with this amplitude can be seeds of large scale magnetic fields observed today if the sufficient dynamo mechanism takes place. Analytic interpretation for the power spectra is also given.

Probing the Early Universe with the CMB Scalar, Vector and Tensor Bispectrum

Although cosmological observations suggest that the fluctuations of seed fields are almost Gaussian, the possibility of a small deviation of their fields from Gaussianity is widely discussed. Theoretically, there exist numerous inflationary scenarios which predict large and characteristic non-Gaussianities in the primordial perturbations. These model-dependent non-Gaussianities act as sources of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum; therefore, the analysis of the CMB bispectrum is very important and attractive in order to clarify the nature of the early Universe. Currently, the impacts of the primordial non-Gaussianities in the scalar perturbations, where the rotational and parity invariances are kept, on the CMB bispectrum have been well-studied. However, for a complex treatment, the CMB bispectra generated from the non-Gaussianities, which originate from the vector- and tensor-mode perturbations and include the violation of the rotational or parity invariance, have never been considered in spite of the importance of this information. On the basis of our current studies, this thesis provides the general formalism for the CMB bispectrum sourced by the non-Gaussianities not only in the scalar-mode perturbations but also in the vector- and tensor-mode perturbations. Applying this formalism, we calculate the CMB bispectrum from two scalars and a graviton correlation and that from primordial magnetic fields, and we then outline new constraints on these amplitudes. Furthermore, this formalism can be easily extended to the cases where the rotational or parity invariance is broken. We also compute the CMB bispectra from the non-Gaussianities of the curvature perturbations with a preferred direction and the graviton non-Gaussianities induced by the parity-violating Weyl cubic terms. We also present some unique impacts to the violation of these invariances on the CMB bispectrum.

Scale-dependent bias due to primordial vector fields

Anisotropic stress perturbations induced by primordial Gaussian vector fields create non-Gaussianity in curvature perturbations. We found that such non-Gaussianity closely resembles the local-type non-Gaussianity parametrized by $f_{\rm NL}$, and generates scale-dependent bias in large-scale structures. We also found a simple relationship between the scale-dependent bias and the power spectrum of the vector fields. When the vector fields are interpreted as primordial magnetic fields, the effective $f_{\rm NL}$ is shown to be always negative. The scale-dependent bias provides a new approach to probing primordial vector fields.

Signatures of anisotropic sources in the squeezed-limit bispectrum of the cosmic microwave background

The bispectrum of primordial curvature perturbations in the squeezed configuration, in which one wavenumber, $k_3$, is much smaller than the other two, $k_3\ll k_1\approx k_2$, plays a special role in constraining the physics of inflation. In this paper we study a new phenomenological signature in the squeezed-limit bispectrum: namely, the amplitude of the squeezed-limit bispectrum depends on an angle between ${\bf k}_1$ and ${\bf k}_3$ such that $B_ζ(k_1, k_2, k_3) \to 2 \sum_L c_L P_L(\hat{\bf k}_1 \cdot \hat{\bf k}_3) P_ζ(k_1)P_ζ(k_3)$, where $P_L$ are the Legendre polynomials. While $c_0$ is related to the usual local-form $f_{\rm NL}$ parameter as $c_0=6f_{\rm NL}/5$, the higher-multipole coefficients, $c_1$, $c_2$, etc., have not been constrained by the data. Primordial curvature perturbations sourced by large-scale magnetic fields generate non-vanishing $c_0$, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Inflation models whose action contains a term like $I(ϕ)^2 F^2$ generate $c_2=c_0/2$. A recently proposed "solid inflation" model generates $c_2\gg c_0$. A cosmic-variance-limited experiment measuring temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background up to $\ell_{\rm max}=2000$ is able to measure these coefficients down to $δc_0=4.4$, $δc_1=61$, and $δc_2=13$ (68% CL). We also find that $c_0$ and $c_1$, and $c_0$ and $c_2$, are nearly uncorrelated. Measurements of these coefficients will open up a new window into the physics of inflation such as the existence of vector fields during inflation or non-trivial symmetry structure of inflaton fields. Finally, we show that the original form of the Suyama-Yamaguchi inequality does not apply to the case involving higher-spin fields, but a generalized form does.

Full bispectra from primordial scalar and tensor perturbations in the most general single-field inflation model

We compute the full bispectra, namely both auto- and cross- bispectra, of primordial curvature and tensor perturbations in the most general single-field inflation model whose scalar and gravitational equations of motion are of second order. The formulae in the limits of k-inflation and potential-driven inflation are also given. These expressions are useful for estimating the full bispectra of temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

CMB power spectra induced by primordial cross-bispectra between metric perturbations and vector fields

We study temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation sourced from primordial cross-bispectra between metric perturbations and vector fields, which are generated from the inflation model where an inflaton and a vector field are coupled. In case the vector field survives after the reheating, both the primordial scalar and tensor fluctuations can be enhanced by the anisotropic stress composed of the vector fields during radiation dominated era. We show that through this enhancement the primordial cross-bispectra generate not only CMB bispectra but also CMB power spectra. In general, we can expect such cross-bispectra produce the non-trivial mode-coupling signals between the scalar and tensor fluctuations. However, we explicitly show that such mode-coupling signals do not appear in CMB power spectra. Through the numerical analysis of the CMB scalar-mode power spectra, we find that although signals from these cross-bispectra are smaller than primary non-electromagnetic ones, these have some characteristic features such as negative auto-correlations of the temperature and polarization modes, respectively. On the other hand, signals from tensor modes are almost comparable to primary non-electromagnetic ones and hence the shape of observed $B$-mode spectrum may deviate from the prediction in the non-electromagnetic case. The above imprints may help us to judge the existence of the coupling between the scalar and vector fields in the early Universe.

Parity violation of primordial magnetic fields in the CMB bispectrum

We study the parity violation in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectrum induced by primordial magnetic fields (PMFs). Deriving a general formula for the CMB bispectrum generated from not only non-helical but also helical PMFs, we find that helical PMFs produce characteristic signals, which disappear in parity-conserving cases, such as the intensity-intensity-intensity bispectra arising from $\sum_{n=1}^3 \ell_n = {\rm odd}$. For fast numerical calculation of the CMB bispectrum, we reduce the one-loop formula to the tree-level one by using the so-called pole approximation. Then, we show that the magnetic anisotropic stress, which depends quadratically on non-helical and helical PMFs and acts as a source of the CMB fluctuation, produces the local-type non-Gaussianity. Comparing the CMB bispectra composed of the scalar and tensor modes with the noise spectra, we find that assuming the generation of the nearly scale-invariant non-helical and helical PMFs from the grand unification energy scale ($10^{14} {\rm GeV}$) to the electroweak one ($10^{3} {\rm GeV}$), the intensity-intensity-intensity bispectrum for $\sum_{n=1}^3 \ell_n = {\rm odd}$ can be observed by the WMAP experiment under the condition that $B_{1 \rm Mpc}^{2/3} {\cal B}_{1 \rm Mpc}^{1/3} > 2.7 - 4.5 {\rm nG}$ with $B_{1 \rm Mpc}$ and ${\cal B}_{1 \rm Mpc}$ being the non-helical and helical PMF strengths smoothed on 1 Mpc, respectively.

Optimal limits on primordial magnetic fields from CMB temperature bispectrum of passive modes

We investigate bounds on the strength of the primordial magnetic field (PMF) from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra of the intensity (temperature) modes induced from the auto- and cross-correlated bispectra of the scalar and tensor components of the PMF anisotropic stress. At first, we construct a general formula for the CMB intensity and polarization bispectra from PMFs composed of any type of perturbation. Then we derive an approximate expression which traces the exact shape of the CMB bispectrum in order to reduce the computation time with respect to a large number of the multipole configurations, and also show that the non-Gaussian structure coming from PMFs is classified as the local-type configuration. Computing the signal-to-noise ratio on the basis of the approximate formula with the information of the instrumental noises and resolutions, we find expected upper bounds on the magnetic field strength, when the magnetic spectrum is nearly scale invariant ($n_B = -2.9$), smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$ scale at 95% confidence level from the WMAP and PLANCK experiments as $B_{1 \rm Mpc} < 4.0 - 6.7 {\rm nG}$ and $3.8 - 6.5 {\rm nG}$, respectively, depending on the energy scale of the magnetic field production from $10^{14} {\rm GeV}$ to $10^3 {\rm GeV}$. Our new consequences imply slight overestimations by the previous rough discussions.

Parity Violation of Gravitons in the CMB Bispectrum

We investigate the cosmic microwave background (CMB) bispectra of the intensity (temperature) and polarization modes induced by the graviton non-Gaussianities, which arise from the parity-conserving and parity-violating Weyl cubic terms with time-dependent coupling. By considering the time-dependent coupling, we find that even in the exact de Sitter space time, the parity violation still appears in the three-point function of the primordial gravitational waves and could become large. Through the estimation of the CMB bispectra, we demonstrate that the signals generated from the parity-conserving and parity-violating terms appear in completely different configurations of multipoles. For example, the parity-conserving non-Gaussianity induces the nonzero CMB temperature bispectrum in the configuration with $\sum_{n=1}^3 \ell_n = {\rm even}$ and, while due to the parity-violating non-Gaussianity, the CMB temperature bispectrum also appears for $\sum_{n=1}^3 \ell_n = {\rm odd}$. This signal is just good evidence of the parity violation in the non-Gaussianity of primordial gravitational waves. We find that the shape of this non-Gaussianity is similar to the so-called equilateral one and the amplitudes of these spectra at large scale are roughly estimated as $|b_{\ell \ell \ell}| \sim \ell^{-4} \times 3.2 \times 10^{-2} ({\rm GeV} / Λ)^2 (r / 0.1)^4$, where $Λ$ is an energy scale that sets the magnitude of the Weyl cubic terms (higher derivative corrections) and $r$ is a tensor-to-scalar ratio. Taking the limit for the nonlinearity parameter of the equilateral type as $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm eq} < 300$, we can obtain a bound as $Λ\gtrsim 3 \times 10^6 {\rm GeV}$, assuming $r=0.1$.

Violation of the Rotational Invariance in the CMB Bispectrum

We investigate a statistical anisotropy on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum, which can be generated from the primordial non-Gaussianity induced by quantum fluctuations of a vector field. We find new configurations in the multipole space of the CMB bispectrum given by $\ell_1 = \ell_2 + \ell_3 + 2, |\ell_2 - \ell_3| - 2$ and their permutations, which violate the rotational invariance, such as an off-diagonal configuration in the CMB power spectrum. We also find that in a model presented by Yokoyama and Soda (2008), the amplitude of the statistically anisotropic bispectrum in the above configurations becomes as large as that in other configurations such as $\ell_1 = \ell_2 + \ell_3$. As a result, it might be possible to detect these contributions in future experiments, which would give us novel information about the physics of the early Universe.

Computation approach for CMB bispectrum from primordial magnetic fields

We present a detailed calculation of our previous short paper [M. Shiraishi, D. Nitta, S. Yokoyama, K. Ichiki, and K. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. D 82, 121302 (2010).] in which we have investigated a constraint on the magnetic field strength through comic microwave background temperature bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. By taking into account full angular dependence of the bispectrum with spin spherical harmonics and Wigner symbols, we explicitly show that the cosmic microwave background bispectrum induced from the statistical-isotropic primordial vector fluctuations can be also described as an angle-averaged form in the rotationally invariant way. We also study the cases with different spectral indices of the power spectrum of the primordial magnetic fields.

Cosmic microwave background bispectrum of tensor passive modes induced from primordial magnetic fields

If the seed magnetic fields exist in the early Universe, tensor components of their anisotropic stresses are not compensated prior to neutrino decoupling and the tensor metric perturbations generated from them survive passively. Consequently, due to the decay of these metric perturbations after recombination, the so-called integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, the large-scale fluctuations of CMB radiation are significantly boosted. This kind of CMB anisotropy is called the "tensor passive mode." Because these fluctuations deviate largely from the Gaussian statistics due to the quadratic dependence on the strength of the Gaussian magnetic field, not only the power spectrum but also the higher-order correlations have reasonable signals. With these motives, we compute the CMB bispectrum induced by this mode. When the magnetic spectrum obeys a nearly scale-invariant shape, we obtain an estimation of a typical value of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim (130-6) \times 10^{-16} (B_{1 \rm Mpc} / 4.7 {\rm nG})^6$ depending on the energy scale of the magnetic field production from $10^{14}$GeV to $10^3$GeV. Here, $B_{1 {\rm Mpc}}$ is the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$. From the above estimation and the current observational constraint on the primordial non-Gaussianity, we get a rough constraint on the magnetic field strength as $B_{1 {\rm Mpc}} < 2.6 - 4.4 {\rm nG}$.

CMB Bispectrum from Primordial Scalar, Vector and Tensor non-Gaussianities

We present an all-sky formalism for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) bispectrum induced by the primordial non-Gaussianities not only in scalar but also in vector and tensor fluctuations. We find that the bispectrum can be formed in an explicitly rationally invariant way by taking into account the angular and polarization dependences of the vector and tensor modes. To demonstrate this and present how to use our formalism, we consider a specific example of the correlation between two scalars and a graviton as the source of non-Gaussianity. As a result, we show that the CMB reduced bispectrum of the intensity anisotropies is evaluated as a function of the multipole and the coupling constant between two scalars and a graviton denoted by $g_{tss}$; $|b_{\ell \ell \ell}| \sim \ell^{-4} \times 8 \times 10^{-18} |g_{tss}|$. By estimating the signal-to-noise ratio, we find that the constraint as $|g_{tss}| < 6$ will be expected from the PLANCK experiment.

Cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields

We calculate the cosmic microwave background bispectrum of vector modes induced from primordial magnetic fields. We take into account the full angular dependence of the bispectrum and discuss the amplitude and also the shape of the bispectrum in $\ell$ space. In the squeezed limit as $\ell_1 = \ell_2 \gg \ell_3$, we estimate a typical values of the normalized reduced bispectrum as $\ell_1(\ell_1 + 1)\ell_3(\ell_3+1)|b_{\ell_1\ell_2\ell_3}| \sim 2 \times 10^{-19}$, for the strength of the primordial magnetic field smoothed on $1 {\rm Mpc}$ scale $B_{1 \rm Mpc} = 4.7 \rm nG$ assuming a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of magnetic fields. We find that a constraint on the magnetic field strength will be roughly estimated as $B_{1 \rm Mpc} < 10 {\rm nG}$ if PLANCK places a limit on the nonlinearity parameter of local-type configuration as $|f^{\rm local}_{\rm NL}| < 5$.
