Electroweak Baryogenesis in the CP-Violating Two-Higgs Doublet Model

Recently we presented the upgrade of our code BSMPT for the calculation of the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) to BSMPT v2 which now includes the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) in the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM). In this paper we use {\tt BSMPT v2} to investigate the size of the BAU that is obtained in the C2HDM with the two implemented approaches FH and VIA to derive the transport equations, by taking into account all relevant theoretical and experimental constraints. We identify similarities and differences in the results computed with the two methods. In particular, we analyse the dependence of the obtained BAU on the parameters relevant for successful baryogenesis. Our investigations allow us to pinpoint future directions for improvements both in the computation of the BAU and in possible avenues taken for model building.

Two-Loop ${\cal O}((α_t+α_λ+α_κ)^2)$ Corrections to the Higgs Boson Masses in the CP-Violating NMSSM

We present our computation of the ${\cal O}((α_t+α_λ+α_κ)^2)$ two-loop corrections to the Higgs boson masses of the CP-violating Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) using the Feynman-diagrammatic approach in the gaugeless limit at vanishing external momentum. We choose a mixed $\overline{\mbox{DR}}$-on-shell (OS) renormalisation scheme for the Higgs sector and apply both $\overline{\mbox{DR}}$ and OS renormalisation in the top/stop sector. For the treatment of the infrared divergences we apply and compare three different regularisation methods: the introduction of a regulator mass, the application of a small momentum expansion, and the inclusion of the full momentum dependence. Our new corrections have been implemented in the Fortran code NMSSMCALC that computes the Higgs mass spectrum of the CP-conserving and CP-violating NMSSM as well as the Higgs boson decays including the state-of-the-art higher-order corrections. Our numerical analysis shows that the newly computed corrections increase with rising $λ$ and $κ$, remaining overall below about 3\% compared to our previously computed ${\cal O}(α_t(α_t+α_s))$ corrections, in the region compatible with perturbativity below the GUT scale. The renormalisation scheme and scale dependence is of typical two-loop order. The impact of the CP-violating phases in the new corrections is small. We furthermore show that the Goldstone Boson Catastrophe due to the infrared divergences can be treated in a numerically efficient way by introducing a regulator mass that approximates the momentum-dependent results best for squared mass values in the permille range of the squared renormalisation scale. Our results mark another step forward in the program of increasing the precision in the NMSSM Higgs boson observables.

Electroweak Corrections in a Pseudo-Nambu Goldstone Dark Matter Model Revisited

Having so far only indirect evidence for the existence of Dark Matter a plethora of experiments aims at direct detection of Dark Matter through the scattering of Dark Matter particles off atomic nuclei. For the correct interpretation and identification of the underlying nature of the Dark Matter constituents higher-order corrections to the cross section of Dark Matter-nucleon scattering are important, in particular in models where the tree-level cross section is negligibly small. In this work we revisit the electroweak corrections to the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in a model with a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson as the Dark Matter candidate. Two calculations that already exist in the literature, apply different approaches resulting in different final results for the cross section in some regions of the parameter space leading us to redo the calculation and analyse the two approaches to clarify the situation. We furthermore update the experimental constraints and examine the regions of the parameter space where the cross section is above the neutrino floor but which can only be probed in the far future.

ScannerS: Parameter Scans in Extended Scalar Sectors

We present the public code ScannerS-2 that performs parameter scans and checks parameter points in theories beyond the Standard Model (BSM) with extended scalar sectors. ScannerS incorporates theoretical and experimental constraints from many different sources in order to judge whether a parameter point is allowed or excluded at approximately 95% CL. The BSM models implemented in ScannerS include many popular BSM models such as singlet extensions, different versions of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, or the different phases of the Next-to Two-Higgs-Doublet Model. The ScannerS framework allows straightforward extensions by additional constraints and BSM models.

NLO corrections to Vector Dark Matter Direct Detection -- An update

In this work we present an update to a previous calculation of the Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) corrections to the Vector Dark Matter (VDM) direct detection cross section. The model under investigation is a minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) with one extra vector boson and one extra complex scalar field, where the vector is the DM candidate. We have computed the spin-independent cross section for the scattering of the VDM particle with a nucleon. We now provide an update to the NLO cross section for the direct detection of the DM particle. We further discuss the phenomenological implications of the NLO corrections for the sensitivity of the direct detection DM experiments.

Di-Higgs Peaks and Top Valleys: Interference Effects in Higgs Sector Extensions

In models with extended scalars and CP violation, resonance searches in double Higgs final states stand in competition with related searches in top quark final states as optimal channels for the discovery of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. This complementarity is particularly relevant for benchmark scenarios that aim to highlight multi-Higgs production as a standard candle for the study of BSM phenomena. In this note, we compare interference effects in $t\bar t$ final states with correlated phenomena in double Higgs production in the complex singlet and the complex 2-Higgs-Doublet Models. Our results indicate that the BSM discovery potential in di-Higgs searches can be underestimated in comparison to $t\bar t $ resonance searches. Top pair final states are typically suppressed due to destructive signal-background interference, while $hh$ final states can be enhanced due to signal-signal interference. For parameter choices where the two heavy Higgs resonances are well separated in mass, top final states are suppressed relative to the naive signal expectation, while estimates of the production cross section times branching ratio remain accurate at the ${\cal{O}}(10\%)$ level for double Higgs final states.

Gluon fusion into Higgs pairs at NLO QCD and the top mass scheme

We present the calculation of the full next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to Higgs boson pair production via gluon fusion at the LHC, including the exact top-mass dependence in the two-loop virtual and one-loop real corrections. This is the first independent cross-check of the NLO QCD corrections presented in the literature before. Our calculation relies on numerical integrations of Feynman integrals, stabilised with integration-by-parts and a Richardson extrapolation to the narrow width approximation. We present results for the total cross section as well as for the invariant Higgs-pair-mass distribution at the LHC, including for the first time a study of the uncertainty due to the scheme and scale choice for the top mass in the loops.

Vacuum Instabilities in the N2HDM

The Higgs sector of the Next-to-Minimal Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (N2HDM) is obtained from the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) containing two complex Higgs doublets, by adding a real singlet field. In this paper, we analyse the vacuum structure of the N2HDM with respect to the possibility of vacuum instabilities. We show that while one type of charge- and CP-preserving vacuum cannot coexist with deeper charge- or CP-breaking minima, there is another type of vacuum whose stability is endangered by the possible occurrence of deeper charge- and CP-breaking minima. Analytical expressions relating the depth of different vacua are deduced. Parameter scans of the model are carried out that illustrate the regions of parameter space here the vacuum is either stable or metastable as well as the regions where tunnelling to deeper vacua gives rise to a too short lifetime of the vacuum. Taking other experimental and theoretical constraints into account, we find that the vacuum stability constraints have an important impact on the phenomenology of the N2HDM.

Automatised matching between two scalar sectors at the one-loop level

Nowadays, one needs to consider seriously the possibility that a large separation between the scale of new physics and the electroweak scale exists. Nevertheless, there are still observables in this scenario, in particular the Higgs mass, which are sensitive to the properties of the UV theory. In order to obtain reliable predictions for a model which involves very heavy degrees of freedom, the precise matching to an effective theory is necessary. While this has been so far only studied for a few selected examples, we present an extension of the ${\tt Mathematica}$ package ${\tt SARAH}$ to perform automatically the matching between two scalar sectors at the full one-loop level for general models. We show that we can reproduce all important results for commonly studied models like split- or high-scale supersymmetry. One can now easily go beyond that and study new ideas involving very heavy states, where the effective model can either be just the standard model or an extension of it. Also scenarios with several matching scales can be easily considered. We provide model files for the MSSM with seven different mass hierarchies as well as two high-scale versions of the NMSSM. Moreover, it is explained how new models are implemented.

The hMSSM approach for Higgs self-couplings revisited

We compare the decay of the heavy Higgs boson into two SM-like Higgs bosons, $H\to hh$, calculated in a Feynman-diagrammatic approach at the one-loop level based on the one hand on the full effective potential involving the top quark and stops in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) accompanied by the matched Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) as its low-energy limit and on the other hand on the hMSSM approximation. We identify missing contributions due to the top quark in the Higgs self-couplings of the hMSSM, that - when taken into account - lead to a good agreement between the hMSSM and a full MSSM calculation, at least in the limit of the Higgsino mass parameter $μ$ being small compared to the stop spectrum. We also thoroughly analyze momentum-dependent and kinetic corrections intrinsic to the Feynman-diagrammatic approach and the matching to the effective Lagrangian, respectively, for both our calculation in the MSSM and the hMSSM and for the latter suggest to include additional corrections from the top quark, which are independent of the unknown supersymmetric spectrum.

N2HDECAY: Higgs Boson Decays in the Different Phases of the N2HDM

The program N2HDECAY calculates the branching ratios and decay widths of the Higgs bosons of the Next-to-Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (N2HDM). The code incorporates the dominant higher-order effects by including QCD corrections and off-shell decay modes. The N2HDM is an extension of the Standard Model by a Higgs doublet and a real Higgs singlet. Its phenomenology can change dramatically depending on which global symmetries are broken by electroweak symmetry breaking. It can feature a large visible Higgs sector in the broken phase, behave like a 2HDM with scalar singlet dark matter in the dark singlet phase, or, in the inert doublet phase, extend an inert doublet model by mixing a singlet with the SM Higgs boson. N2HDECAY provides precise predictions for the decays of the Higgs bosons in all of these phases.

High scale impact in alignment and decoupling in two-Higgs doublet models

The two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) provides an excellent benchmark to study physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In this work we discuss how the behaviour of the model at high energy scales causes it to have a scalar with properties very similar to those of the SM -- which means the 2HDM can be seen to naturally favor a decoupling or alignment limit. For a type II 2HDM, we show that requiring the model to be theoretically valid up to a scale of 1 TeV, by studying the renormalization group equations (RGE) of the parameters of the model, causes a significant reduction in the allowed magnitude of the quartic couplings. This, combined with $B$-physics bounds, forces the model to be naturally decoupled. As a consequence, any non-decoupling limits in type II, like the wrong-sign scenario, are excluded. On the contrary, even with the very constraining limits for the Higgs couplings from the LHC, the type I model can deviate substantially from alignment. An RGE analysis similar to that made for type II shows, however, that requiring a single scalar to be heavier than about 500 GeV would be sufficient for the model to be decoupled. Finally, we show that not only a 2HDM where the lightest of the CP-even scalars is the 125 GeV one does not require new physics to be stable up to the Planck scale but this is also true when the heavy CP-even Higgs is the 125 GeV and the theory has no decoupling limit for the type I model.

The C2HDM revisited

The complex two-Higgs doublet model is one of the simplest ways to extend the scalar sector of the Standard Model to include a new source of CP-violation. The model has been used as a benchmark model to search for CP-violation at the LHC and as a possible explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. In this work, we re-analyse in full detail the softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric complex two-Higgs doublet model (C2HDM). We provide the code C2HDM_HDECAY implementing the C2HDM in the well-known HDECAY program which calculates the decay widths including the state-of-the-art higher order QCD corrections and the relevant off-shell decays. Using C2HDM_HDECAY together with the most relevant theoretical and experimental constraints, including electric dipole moments (EDMs), we review the parameter space of the model and discuss its phenomenology. In particular, we find cases where large CP-odd couplings to fermions are still allowed and provide benchmark points for these scenarios. We examine the prospects of discovering CP-violation at the LHC and show how theoretically motivated measures of CP-violation correlate with observables.

The CP-Violating 2HDM in Light of a Strong First Order Electroweak Phase Transition and Implications for Higgs Pair Production

We investigate the strength of the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) within the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM). By applying a renormalisation scheme which allows efficient scans of the C2HDM parameter space, we analyse the possibility of a strong first order EWPT required for baryogenesis and study its phenomenological implications for the LHC. Like in the CP-conserving (real) 2HDM (R2HDM) we find that a strong EWPT favours mass gaps between the non-SM-like Higgs bosons. These lead to prominent final states comprised of gauge+Higgs bosons or pairs of Higgs bosons. In contrast to the R2HDM, the CP-mixing of the C2HDM also favours approximately mass degenerate spectra with dominant decays into SM particles. The requirement of a strong EWPT further allows us to distinguish the C2HDM from the R2HDM using the signal strengths of the SM-like Higgs boson. We additionally find that a strong EWPT requires an enhancement of the SM-like trilinear Higgs coupling at next-to-leading order (NLO) by up to a factor of 2.4 compared to the NLO SM coupling, establishing another link between cosmology and collider phenomenology. We provide several C2HDM benchmark scenarios compatible with a strong EWPT and all experimental and theoretical constraints. We include the dominant branching ratios of the non-SM-like Higgs bosons as well as the Higgs pair production cross section of the SM-like Higgs boson for every benchmark point. The pair production cross sections can be substantially enhanced compared to the SM and could be observable at the high-luminosity LHC, allowing access to the trilinear Higgs couplings.

Singlet Extensions of the Standard Model at LHC Run 2: Benchmarks and Comparison with the NMSSM

The Complex singlet extension of the Standard Model (CxSM) is the simplest extension that provides scenarios for Higgs pair production with different masses. The model has two interesting phases: the dark matter phase, with a Standard Model-like Higgs boson, a new scalar and a dark matter candidate; and the broken phase, with all three neutral scalars mixing. In the latter phase Higgs decays into a pair of two different Higgs bosons are possible. In this study we analyse Higgs-to-Higgs decays in the framework of singlet extensions of the Standard Model (SM), with focus on the CxSM. After demonstrating that scenarios with large rates for such chain decays are possible we perform a comparison between the NMSSM and the CxSM. We find that, based on Higgs-to-Higgs decays, the only possibility to distinguish the two models at the LHC run 2 is through final states with two different scalars. This conclusion builds a strong case for searches for final states with two different scalars at the LHC run 2. Finally, we propose a set of benchmark points for the real and complex singlet extensions to be tested at the LHC run 2. They have been chosen such that the discovery prospects of the involved scalars are maximised and they fulfil the dark matter constraints. Furthermore, for some of the points the theory is stable up to high energy scales. For the computation of the decay widths and branching ratios we developed the Fortran code, sHDECAY, which is based on the implementation of the real and complex singlet extensions of the SM in HDECAY.

Squark Production and Decay matched with Parton Showers at NLO

Extending previous work on the predictions for the production of supersymmetric (SUSY) particles at the LHC, we present the fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the production of squark and squark-antisquark pairs of the first two generations. The NLO cross sections are combined with the subsequent decay of the final state (anti)squarks into the lightest neutralino and (anti)quark at NLO SUSY-QCD. No assumptions on the squark masses are made, and the various subchannels are taken into account independently. In order to obtain realistic predictions for differential distributions the fixed-order calculations have to be combined with parton showers. Making use of the Powheg method we have implemented our results in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced the NLO calculation with the parton shower Monte Carlo programs Pythia6 and Herwig++. The code is publicly available and can be downloaded from the Powheg-Box webpage. The impact of the NLO corrections on the differential distributions is studied and parton shower effects are investigated for different benchmark scenarios.

Matching Squark Pair Production at NLO with Parton Showers

The pair production of squarks is one of the main search channels for supersymmetry at the LHC. We present a fully differential calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) SUSY-QCD corrections to the on-shell production of a pair of squarks in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), supplemented by the leading-order decay of the squarks to the lightest neutralino and a quark. In addition, we use the Powheg method to match our NLO calculation with parton showers. To this end, the process was implemented in the Powheg-Box framework and interfaced with Pythia6 and Herwig++. We study the differential scale dependence and K-factors, and investigate the effects of the parton showers for a benchmark scenario in the constrained MSSM.

Composite Higgs Search at the LHC

The Higgs boson production cross-sections and decay rates depend, within the Standard Model (SM), on a single unknown parameter, the Higgs mass. In composite Higgs models where the Higgs boson emerges as a pseudo-Goldstone boson from a strongly-interacting sector, additional parameters control the Higgs properties which then deviate from the SM ones. These deviations modify the LEP and Tevatron exclusion bounds and significantly affect the searches for the Higgs boson at the LHC. In some cases, all the Higgs couplings are reduced, which results in deterioration of the Higgs searches but the deviations of the Higgs couplings can also allow for an enhancement of the gluon-fusion production channel, leading to higher statistical significances. The search in the H to gamma gamma channel can also be substantially improved due to an enhancement of the branching fraction for the decay of the Higgs boson into a pair of photons.
