A characterization of the symmetric square of a curve

In this paper a new intrinsic geometric characterization of the symmetric square of a curve and of the ordinary product of two curves is given. More precisely it is shown that the existence on a surface of general type S of irregularity q of an effective divisor D having self-intersection D^2>0 and arithmetic genus q implies that S is either birational to a product of curves or to the second symmetric product of a curve.

On surfaces of general type with q=5

We prove that a complex surface S with irregularity q(S)=5 that has no irrational pencil of genus >1 has geometric genus p_g(S)>7. As a consequence, one is able to classify minimal surfaces S of general type with q(S)=5 and p_g(S)<8. This result is a negative answer, for q=5, to the question asked in arXiv:0811.0390 of the existence of surfaces of general type with irregularity q>3 that have no irrational pencil of genus >1 and with the lowest possible geometric genus p_g=2q-3. This gives some evidence for the conjecture that the only irregular surface with no irrational pencil of genus >1 and p_g=2q-3 is the symmetric product of a genus three curve.

The geography of irregular surfaces

We give an overview of results on irregular complex surfaces of general type, discussing in particular the distribution of the numerical invariants self-intersection of a canonical divisor and holomorphic Euler characteristic for the minimal ones. This is an expanded version of the talk given by the second author at the workshop "Classical Algebraic Geometry Today", M.S.R.I., January 26--30, 2009.

Severi type inequalities for irregular surfaces with ample canonical class

Let S be a smooth minimal complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. Under the assumption that the canonical class of S is ample and the irregularity of S, q(S), is greater or equal to 5 we show that K^2>= 4χ(S)+(10/3)q(S)-8, thus improving the well known Severi inequality K^2>=4χ(S). We also give stronger inequalities under extra assumptions on the Albanese map or on the canonical map of S.

On surfaces with p_g=2q-3

We study minimal complex surfaces S of general type with q(S)=q and p_g(S)=2q-3, q>= 5. We give a complete classification in case that S has a fibration onto a curve of genus >=2. For these surfaces K^2=8χ. In general we prove that K^2>=7χ-1 and that the stronger inequality K^2\ge 8χholds under extra assumptions (e.g., if the canonical system has no fixed part or the canonical map has even degree). We also describe the Albanese map of S.

Campedelli surfaces with fundamental group of order 8

We prove that an etale cover Y of degree 8 of a Campedelli surface S is a complete intersection of four quadrics in P^6, obtaining as a consequence that Y is the universal cover of S, the covering group G=Gal(Y/S)is the topological fundamental group of S and that G cannot be the dihedral group of order 8. This paper patches up an incomplete manuscript of the third author.

The base components of the dualizing sheaf of a curve on a surface

This note studies the structure of the divisorial fixed part of the dualizing sheaf of a 1-connected curve D on a smooth surface S. It is shown that if the divisorial fixed part F of the dualizing sheaf is non empty then it has arithmetic genus<1 and each component of F is a smooth rational curve.

Surfaces with K^2<3χand finite fundamental group

In this paper we continue the study of algebraic fundamentale group of minimal surfaces of general type S satisfying K_S^2<3χ(S). We show that, if K_S^2= 3χ(S)-1 and the algebraic fundamental group of S has order 8, then S is a Campedelli surface. In view of the results of math.AG/0512483 and math.AG/0605733, this implies that the fundamental group of a surface with K^2<3χthat has no irregular etale cover has order at most 9, and if it has order 8 or 9, then S is a Campedelli surface. To obtain this result we establish some classification results for minimal surfaces of general type such that K^2=3p_g-5 and such that the canonical map is a birational morphism. We also study rational surfaces with a Z_2^3-action.

On the algebraic fundamental group of surfaces with K^2\leq 3χ

Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with $q(S)=0$. We prove the following statements concerning the algebraic fundamental group: I) Assume that K^2_S\leq 3χ(S). Then S has an irregular etale cover if and only if S has a free pencil of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 with at least 4 double fibres. II) If K^2_S=3 and χ(S)=1, then S has no irregular etale cover. III) If K^2_S<3χ(S) and S does not have any irregular etale cover, then the order of the algebraic fundamental group is lesser or equal to 9, and if equality occurs then K^2_S=2, χ(S)=1.

Numerical Campedelli surfaces with fundamental group of order 9

We give explicit constructions of all the numerical Campedelli surfaces, i.e the minimal surfaces of general type with K^2=2 and p_g=0, whose fundamental group has order 9. There are three families, one with fundamental group equal to Z_9 and two with fundamental group equal to Z_3^2. We also determine the base locus of the bicanonical system of these surfaces. It turns out that for the surfaces with fundamental group equal to Z_9 and for one of the families of surfaces with fundamental group equal to Z_3^2 the base locus consists of two points. To our knowlegde, these are the only known examples of surfaces of general type with K^2>1 whose bicanonical system has base points.

The order of finite algebraic fundamental groups of surfaces with K^2<=3χ-2

We study the structure of the algebraic fundamental group for minimal surfaces of general type S satisfying K_S^2<=3χ-2$ and not having any irregular etale cover. We show that, if K_S^2<=3χ-2, then then the algebraic fundamental group of S has order at most 5, and equality only occurs if S is a Godeaux surface. We also show that if K_S^2<= 3χ-3 and the algebraic fundamental group of S is not trivial, then it is Z_2, or Z_2^2 or Z_3. Furthermore in this last case one has: 2<=χ<=4, K^2=3χ-3 and these possibilities do occur.

The degree of the bicanonical map of a surface with $p_g=0$

In this note it is shown that, given a smooth minimal complex surface of general type S with p_g(S)=0, K^2_S=3, for which the bicanonical map is a morphism, then the degree of the bicanonical map of S is not equal to 3. This completes our earlier results, showing that if X is a minimal surface of general type with p_g=0, K^2>=3 such that |2K_X| is free, then the bicanonical map of X can have degree 1, 2 or 4.

Involutions on numerical Campedelli surfaces

Numerical Campedelli surfaces are minimal surfaces of general type with p_g=0 (and so q=0) and K^2=2. Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Campedelli surfaces with an involution, i.e. an automorphism of order 2. First we show that an involution on a numerical Campedelli surface S has either four or six isolated fixed points, and the bicanonical map of S is composed with the involution if and only if the involution has six isolated fixed points. Then we study in detail each of the possible cases, describing also several examples.

Numerical Godeaux surfaces with an involution

Minimal algebraic surfaces of general type with the smallest possible invariants have geometric genus zero and K^2=1 and are usually called "numerical Godeaux surfaces". Although they have been studied by several authors, their complete classification is not known. In this paper we classify numerical Godeaux surfaces with an involution, i.e. with an automorphism of order 2. We prove that they are birationally equivalent either to double covers of Enriques surfaces, or to double planes of two different types: the branch curve either has degree 10 and suitable singularities, originally suggested by Campedelli, or is the union of two lines and a curve of degree 12 with certain singularities. The latter type of double planes are degenerations of examples described by Du Val and their existence was previously unknown; we show some examples of this new type, computing also their torsion group.

Even sets of four nodes on rational surfaces

We describe smooth rational projective algebraic surfaces X, over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2, having an even set of four disjoint (-2)-curves N_1,...,N_4, i.e. such that N_1+...+N_4 is divisible by 2 in Pic(X).

A new family of surfaces with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=3$

Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with p_g=0 such that the bicanonical map of S is not birational and let Z be the bicanonical image. In [M.Mendes Lopes, R.Pardini, "Enriques surfaces with eight nodes", Math. Zeit. 241 (4) (2002), 673-683] it is shown that either: i) Z is a rational surface, or ii) K^2_S=3, the bicanonical map is a degree two morphism and Z is birational to an Enriques surface. Up to now no example of case ii) was known. Here an explicit construction of all such surfaces is given. Furthermore it is shown that the corresponding subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type is irreducible and uniruled of dimension 6.

A note on a theorem of Xiao Gang

In 1985 Xiao Gang proved that the bicanonical system of a complex surface $S$ of general type with $p_2(S)>2$ is not composed of a pencil [Bull. Soc. Math. France, 113 (1985), 23--51]. When in the end of the 80's it was finally proven that $| 2K_S|$ is base point free, whenever $p_g\geq 1$, the part of this theorem concerning surfaces with $p_g\geq 1$ became trivial. In this note a new proof of this theorem for surfaces with $p_g=0$ is presented.

The classification of surfaces with $p_g=0$, $K^2=6$ and non birational bicanonical map

Let $S$ be a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=6$, such that its bicanonical map $\fie\colon S\to\pp^6$ is not birational. The map $\fie$ is a morphism of degree $\le 4$ onto a surface. The case of $°\fie=4$ is completely characterized in [Topology, {\bf 40} (5) (2001), 977--991] and the present paper completes the classification of these surfaces. It is proven that the degree of $\fie$ cannot be equal to 3, and the geometry of surfaces with $°\fie=2$ is analysed in detail. The last section contains three examples of such surfaces, two of which appear to be new.
