Entangled Probability Distributions for Center-of-Mass Tomography

We review the formalism of center-of-mass tomograms that allows us to describe quantum states in terms of probability distribution functions. We introduce the concept of separable and entangled probability distributions for the center-of-mass tomography. We obtain the time evolution of center-of-mass tomograms of entangled states of the inverted oscillator.

Symplectic tomographic probability distribution of crystallized Schrödinger cat states

Within the framework of the probability representation of quantum mechanics, we study a superposition of generic Gaussian states associated to symmetries of a regular polygon of n sides; in other words, the cyclic groups (containing the rotational symmetries) and dihedral groups (containing the rotational and inversion symmetries). We obtain the Wigner functions and tomographic probability distributions (symplectic and optical tomograms) determining the density matrices of the states explicitly as the sums of Gaussian terms. The obtained Wigner functions demonstrate nonclassical behavior, i.e., contain negative values, while the tomograms show a series of maxima and minima different for each state, where the number of the critical points reflects the order of the group defining the states. We discuss general properties of such a generalization of normal probability distributions.

Differential Parametric Formalism for the Evolution of Gaussian States: Nonunitary Evolution and Invariant States

In a differential approach elaborated, we study the evolution of the parameters of Gaussian, mixed, continuous variable density matrices, whose dynamics are given by Hermitian Hamiltonians expressed as quadratic forms of the position and momentum operators or quadrature components. Specifically, we obtain in generic form the differential equations for the covariance matrix, the mean values, and the density matrix parameters of a multipartite Gaussian state, unitarily evolving according to a Hamiltonian $\hat{H}$. We also present the corresponding differential equations which describe the nonunitary evolution of the subsystems. The resulting nonlinear equations are used to solve the dynamics of the system instead of the Schrödinger equation. The formalism elaborated allows us to define new specific invariant and quasi-invariant states, as well as states with invariant covariance matrices, i.e., states were only the mean values evolve according to the classical Hamilton equations. By using density matrices in the position and in the tomographic-probability representations, we study examples of these properties. As examples, we present novel invariant states for the two-mode frequency converter and quasi-invariant states for the bipartite parametric amplifier.

Dichotomic probability representation of quantum states

We present systematic proofs of statements about probability representations of qudit density states in terms of standard probability distributions of dichotomic random variables. New relations and new entropic-information inequalities are derived. The examples of 3- and 4- level states are explicitly worked out.

Star Product Formalism for Probability and Mean Value Representations of Qudits

The quantizer-dequantizer formalism is developed for mean value and probability representation of qubits and qutrits. We derive the star-product kernels providing the possibility to derive explicit expressions of the associative product of the symbols of the density operators and quantum observables for qubits. We discuss an extension of the quantizer-dequantizer formalism associated with the probability and observable mean-value descriptions of quantum states for qudits.

A New Mechanism of Open System Evolution and Its Entropy Using Unitary Transformations in Noncomposite Qudit Systems

The evolution of an open system is usually associated with the interaction of the system with an environment. A new method to study the open-type system evolution of a qubit (two-level atom) state is established. This evolution is determined by a unitary transformation applied to the qutrit (three-level atom) state, which defines the qubit subsystems. This procedure can be used to obtain different qubit quantum channels employing unitary transformations into the qutrit system. In particular, we study the phase damping and spontaneous-emission quantum channels. In addition, we mention a proposal for quasiunitary transforms of qubits, in view of the unitary transform of the total qutrit system. The experimental realization is also addressed. The probability representation of the evolution and its information-entropic characteristics are considered.

Qubit representation of qudit states: correlations and state reconstruction

A method to establish a qubit decomposition of a general qudit state is presented. This new representation allows a geometrical depiction of any qudit state in the Bloch sphere. Additionally, we show that the nonnegativity conditions of the qudit state imply the existence of quantum correlations between the qubits which compose it. These correlations are used to define new inequalities which the density matrices components must satisfy. The importance of such inequalities in the reconstruction of a qudit state is addressed. As an example of the general procedure the qubit decomposition of a qutrit system is shown, which allows a classification of the qutrit states by fixing their invariants ${\rm Tr}(\hatρ^2)$, ${\rm Tr}(\hatρ^3)$.

Geometry and Entanglement of Two-Qubit States in the Quantum Probabilistic Representation

A new geometric representation of qubit and qutrit states based on probability simplexes is used to describe the separability and entanglement properties of density matrices of two qubits. The Peres--Horodecki positive partial transpose (ppt)-criterion and the concurrence inequalities are formulated as the conditions that the introduced probability distributions must satisfy to present entanglement. A four-level system, where one or two states are inaccessible, is considered as an example of applying the elaborated probability approach in an explicit form. The areas of three Triadas of Malevich's squares for entangled states of two qubits are defined through the qutrit state, and the critical values of the sum of their areas are calculated. We always find an interval for the sum of the square areas, which provides the possibility for an experimental checkup of the entanglement of the system in terms of the probabilities.

Entropic bounds between two thermal equilibrium states

The positivity conditions of the relative entropy between two thermal equilibrium states $\hatρ_1$ and $\hatρ_2$ are used to obtain upper and lower bounds for the subtraction of their entropies, the Helmholtz potential and the Gibbs potential of the two systems. These limits are expressed in terms of the mean values of the Hamiltonians, number operator, and temperature of the different systems. In particular, we discuss these limits for molecules which can be represented in terms of the Franck--Condon coefficients. We emphasize the case where the Hamiltonians belong to the same system at two different times $t$ and $t'$. Finally, these bounds are obtained for a general qubit system and for the harmonic oscillator with a time dependent frequency at two different times.

Hidden correlations and entanglement in single-qudit states

We discuss the notion of hidden correlations in classical and quantum indivisible systems along with such characteristics of the correlations as the mutual information and conditional information corresponding to the entropic subadditivity condition and the entropic strong subadditivity condition. We present an analog of the Bayes formula for systems without subsystems, study entropic inequality for von Neumann entropy and Tsallis entropy of the single-qudit state, and discuss the inequalities for qubit and qutrit states as an example.

Conditional information and hidden correlations in single-qudit states

We discuss the notions of mutual information and conditional information for noncomposite systems, classical and quantum; both the mutual information and the conditional information are associated with the presence of hidden correlations in the state of a single qudit. We consider analogs of the entanglement phenomena in the systems without subsystems related to strong hidden quantum correlations.

Light-pressure experiments by P. N. Lebedev and modern problems of optomechanics and quantum optics

In connection with the 150-th Anniversary of P. N. Lebedev, we present historical aspects of his scientific and organizing activity and recall his famous experimental observations and proof of the existence of light pressure along with other results that essentially influenced the development of physics in Russia and in the whole world as well. We discuss the relationship of these studies of electromagnetic waves and other kinds of vibrational phenomena investigated by P. N. Lebedev to modern studies of the interaction of photons with mirrors, gravitational waves, acoustic waves, nonstationary (dynamical) Casimir effect of photon creation in resonators with vibrating boundaries, and vibrations of voltage and current in superconducting circuits realizing the states of qubits and qudits. We discuss the possibility of existence of the nonstationary Casimir effect for gravitational waves and sound in liquid helium.

Discretization of the density matrix as a nonlinear positive map and entanglement

The discretization of the density matrix is proposed as a nonlinear positive map for systems with continuous variables. This procedure is used to calculate the entanglement between two modes through different criteria, such as Tsallis entropy, von Neumann entropy and linear entropy and the logarithmic negativity. As an example, we study the dynamics of entanglement for the two-mode squeezed vacuum state in the parametric amplifier and show good agreement with the analytic results. The loss of information on the system state due to the discretization of the density matrix is also addressed.

Evolution and entanglement of Gaussian states in the parametric amplifier

The linear time-dependent constants of motion of the parametric amplifier are obtained and used to determine in the tomographic-probability representation the evolution of a general two-mode Gaussian state. By means of the discretization of the continuous variable density matrix, the von Neumann and linear entropies are calculated to measure the entanglement properties between the modes of the amplifier. The obtained results for the nonlocal correlations are compared with those associated to a linear map of discretized symplectic Gaussian-state tomogram onto a qubit tomogram. This qubit portrait procedure is used to establish Bell-type's inequalities, which provide a necessary condition to determine the separability of quantum states, which can be evaluated through homodyne detection. Other no-signaling nonlocal correlations are defined through the portrait procedure for noncomposite systems.

Hidden Bell correlations in the four-level atom

We extend the Bell inequality known for two qubits to the four-level atom, including an artificial atom realized by the superconducting circuit, and qudit with j=3/2. We formulate the extended inequality as the inequality valid for an arbitrary Hermitian nonnegative 4x4-matrix with unit trace for both separable and entangled matrices.

Hidden Quantum Correlations in Single Qudit Systems

We introduce the notion of hidden quantum correlations. We present the mean values of observables depending on one classical random variable described by the probability distribution in the form of correlation functions of two (three, etc.) random variables described by the corresponding joint probability distributions. We develop analogous constructions for the density matrices of quantum states and quantum observables. We consider examples of four-dimensional Hilbert space corresponding to the "quantum roulette" and "quantum compass."

Entropy-energy inequalities for qudit states

We establish a procedure to find the extremal density matrices for any finite Hamiltonian of a qudit system. These extremal density matrices provide an approximate description of the energy spectra of the Hamiltonian. In the case of restricting the extremal density matrices by pure states, we show that the energy spectra of the Hamiltonian is recovered for $d=2$ and $3$. We conjecture that by means of this approach the energy spectra can be recovered for the Hamiltonian of an arbitrary finite qudit system. For a given qudit system Hamiltonian, we find new inequalities connecting the mean value of the Hamiltonian and the entropy of an arbitrary state. We demonstrate that these inequalities take place for both the considered extremal density matrices and generic ones.

Entanglement and other quantum correlations of a single qudit state as a resource for quantum technologies

The approach to extend the notion of entanglement for characterizing the properties of quantum correlations in the state of a single qudit is presented. New information and entropic inequalities, such as the subadditivity condition, strong subadditivity condition, and monotonicity of relative entropy for a single qudit corresponding to an arbitrary spin state with spin j are discussed. The idea to employ quantum correlations in the single-qudit state, such as the entanglement, for developing a new quantum technique in quantum computing and quantum communication is proposed. Examples of qutrit and qudit with j = 3/2 are considered.
