Positive convolution structure for a class of Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions of type BC

In this paper, we derive explicit product formulas and positive convolution structures for three continuous classes of Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions of type $BC$. For specific discrete series of multiplicities these hypergeometric functions occur as the spherical functions of non-compact Grassmann manifolds $G/K$ over one of the (skew) fields $\mathbb F= \mathbb R, \mathbb C, \mathbb H.$ We write the product formula of these spherical functions in an explicit form which allows analytic continuation with respect to the parameters. In each of the three cases, we obtain a series of hypergroup algebras which include the commutative convolution algebras of $K$-biinvariant functions on $G$.

The heat semigroup in the compact Heckman-Opdam setting and the Segal-Bargmann transform

In the first part of this paper, we study the heat equation and the heat kernel associated with the Heckman-Opdam Laplacian in the compact, Weyl-group invariant setting. In particular, this Laplacian gives rise to a Feller-Markov semigroup on a fundamental alcove of the affine Weyl group. The second part of the paper is devoted to the Segal-Bargmann transform in our context. A Hilbert space of holomorphic functions is defined such that the $L^2$-heat transform becomes a unitary isomorphism.

A Limit Relation for Dunkl-Bessel Functions of Type A and B

We prove a limit relation for the Dunkl-Bessel function of type $B_N$ with multiplicity parameters $k_1$ on the roots $\pm e_i$ and $k_2$ on $\pm e_i\pm e_j$ where $k_1$ tends to infinity and the arguments are suitably scaled. It gives a good approximation in terms of the Dunkl-type Bessel function of type $A_{N-1}$ with multiplicity $k_2$. For certain values of $k_2$ an improved estimate is obtained from a corresponding limit relation for Bessel functions on matrix cones.

Limit theorems for radial random walks on pxq-matrices as p tends to infinity

The radial probability measures on $R^p$ are in a one-to-one correspondence with probability measures on $[0,\infty[$ by taking images of measures w.r.t. the Euclidean norm mapping. For fixed $ν\in M^1([0,\infty[)$ and each dimension p, we consider i.i.d. $R^p$-valued random variables $X_1^p,X_2^p,...$ with radial laws corresponding to $ν$ as above. We derive weak and strong laws of large numbers as well as a large deviation principle for the Euclidean length processes $S_k^p:=\|X_1^p+...+X_k^p\|$ as k,p\to\infty in suitable ways. In fact, we derive these results in a higher rank setting, where $R^p$ is replaced by the space of $p\times q$ matrices and $[0,\infty[$ by the cone $Π_q$ of positive semidefinite matrices. Proofs are based on the fact that the $(S_k^p)_{k\ge 0}$ form Markov chains on the cone whose transition probabilities are given in terms Bessel functions $J_μ$ of matrix argument with an index $μ$ depending on p. The limit theorems follow from new asymptotic results for the $J_μ$ as $μ\to \infty$. Similar results are also proven for certain Dunkl-type Bessel functions.

Bessel convolutions on matrix cones

In this paper we introduce probability-preserving convolution algebras on cones of positive semidefinite matrices over one of the division algebras $\b F = \b R, \b C$ or $\b H$ which interpolate the convolution algebras of radial bounded Borel measures on a matrix space $M_{p,q}(\b F)$ with $p\geq q$. Radiality in this context means invariance under the action of the unitary group $U_p(\b F)$ from the left. We obtain a continuous series of commutative hypergroups whose characters are given by Bessel functions of matrix argument. Our results generalize well-known structures in the rank one case, namely the Bessel-Kingman hypergroups on the positive real line, to a higher rank setting. In a second part of the paper, we study structures depending only on the matrix spectra. Under the mapping $r\mapsto \text{spec}(r)$, the convolutions on the underlying matrix cone induce a continuous series of hypergroup convolutions on a Weyl chamber of type $B_q$. The characters are now Dunkl-type Bessel functions. These convolution algebras on the Weyl chamber naturally extend the harmonic analysis for Cartan motion groups associated with the Grassmann manifolds $U(p,q)/(U_p\times U_q)$ over $\b F$.

SU(d)--biinvariant random walks on SL(d,C) and their Euclidean counterparts

We establish a deformation isomorphism between the algebras of $SU(d)$-biinvariant compactly supported measures on $SL(d,\comp)$ and $SU(d)$-conjugation invariant measures on the Euclidean space $H_d^0$ of all Hermitian $d\times d$-matrices with trace 0. This isomorphism concisely explains a close connection between the spectral problem for sums of Hermititan matrices on one hand and the singular spectral problem for products of matrices from $SL(d,\comp)$ on the other, which has recently been observed by Klyachko \cite{Kl2}. From this deformation we further obtain an explicit, probability preserving and isometric isomorphism between the Banach algebra of bounded $SU(d)$-biinvariant measures on $SL(d,\comp)$ and a certain (non-invariant) subalgebra of the bounded signed measures on $H_d^0$. We demonstrate how this probability preserving isomorphism leads to limit theorems for the singular spectrum of $SU(d)$-biinvariant random walks on $SL(d,\comp)$ in a simple way. Our construction relies on deformations of hypergroup convolutions and will be carried out in the general setting of complex semisimple Lie groups.

Positivity of Dunkl's intertwining operator via the trigonometric setting

In this note, a new proof for the positivity of Dunkl's intertwining operator in the crystallographic case is given. It is based on an asymptotic relationship between the Opdam-Cherednik kernel and the Dunkl kernel as recently observed by M. de Jeu, and on positivity results of S. Sahi for the Heckman-Opdam polynomials and their non-symmetric counterparts.

Deformations of convolution semigroups on commutative hypergroups

It was recently shown by the authors that deformations of hypergroup convolutions w.r.t. positive semicharacters can be used to explain probabilistic connections between the Gelfand pairs (SL(d,C), SU(d)) and Hermitian matrices. We here study connections between general convolution semigroups on commutative hypergroups and their deformations. We are able to develop a satisfying theory, if the underlying positive semicharacter has some growth property. We present several examples which indicate that this growth condition holds in many interesting cases.

Radial multiresolution in dimension three

We present a construction of a wavelet-type orthonormal basis for the space of radial $L^2$-functions in $\R^3$ via the concept of a radial multiresolution analysis. The elements of the basis are obtained from a single radial wavelet by usual dilations and generalized translations. Hereby the generalized translation reveals the group convolution of radial functions in $\R^3$. We provide a simple way to construct a radial scaling function and a radial wavelet from an even classical scaling function on $\R$. Furthermore, decomposition and reconstruction algorithms are formulated.

Dunkl operators: Theory and applications

These lecture notes are intended as an introduction to the theory of rational Dunkl operators and the associated special functions, with an emphasis on positivity and asymptotics. We start with an outline of the general concepts: Dunkl operators, the intertwining operator, the Dunkl kernel and the Dunkl transform. We point out the connection with integrable particle systems of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type, and discuss some systems of orthogonal polynomials associated with them. A major part is devoted to positivity results for the intertwining operator and the Dunkl kernel, the Dunkl-type heat semigroup, and related probabilistic aspects. The notes conclude with recent results on the asymptotics of the Dunkl kernel.

A positive radial product formula for the Dunkl kernel

It is an open conjecture that generalized Bessel functions associated with root systems have a positive product formula for non-negative multiplicity parameters of the associated Dunkl operators. In this paper, a partial result towards this conjecture is proven, namely a positive radial product formula for the non-symmetric counterpart of the generalized Bessel function, the Dunkl kernel. Radial hereby means that one of the factors in the product formula is replaced by its mean over a sphere. The key to this product formula is a positivity result for the Dunkl-type spherical mean operator. It can also be interpreted in the sense that the Dunkl-type generalized translation of radial functions is positivity-preserving. As an application, we construct Dunkl-type homogeneous Markov processes associated with radial probability distributions.

Asymptotic analysis for the Dunkl kernel

This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the integral kernel of the Dunkl transform, the so-called Dunkl kernel, when one of its arguments is fixed and the other tends to infinity either within a Weyl chamber of the associated reflection group, or within a suitable complex domain. The obtained results are based on the asymptotic analysis of an associated system of ordinary differential equations. They generalize the well-known asymptotics of the confluent hypergeometric function $\phantom{}_1F_1$ to the higher-dimensional setting and include a complete short-time asymptotics for the Dunkl-type heat kernel. As an application, it is shown that the representing measures of Dunkl's intertwining operator are generically continuous.

Positivity of Dunkl's intertwining operator

For a finite reflection group on $\b R^N,$ the associated Dunkl operators are parametrized first-order differential-difference operators which generalize the usual partial derivatives. They generate a commutative algebra which is - under weak assumptions - intertwined with the algebra of partial differential operators by a unique linear and homogeneous isomorphism on polynomials. In this paper it is shown that for non-negative parameter values, this intertwining operator is positivity-preserving on polynomials and allows a positive integral representation on certain algebras of analytic functions. This result in particular implies that the generalized exponential kernel of the Dunkl transform is positive-definite.

Biorthogonal polynomials associated with reflection groups and a formula of Macdonald

Dunkl operators are differential-difference operators on $\b R^N$ which generalize partial derivatives. They lead to generalizations of Laplace operators, Fourier transforms, heat semigroups, Hermite polynomials, and so on. In this paper we introduce two systems of biorthogonal polynomials with respect to Dunkl's Gaussian distributions in a quite canonical way. These systems, called Appell systems, admit many properties known from classical Hermite polynomials, and turn out to be useful for the analysis of Dunkl's Gaussian distributions. In particular, these polynomials lead to a new proof of a generalized formula of Macdonald due to Dunkl. The ideas for this paper are taken from recent works on non-Gaussian white noise analysis and from the umbral calculus.

Generalized Hermite Polynomials and the Heat Equation for Dunkl Operators

Based on the theory of Dunkl operators, this paper presents a general concept of multivariable Hermite polynomials and Hermite functions which are associated with finite reflection groups on $\b R^N$. The definition and properties of these generalized Hermite systems extend naturally those of their classical counterparts; partial derivatives and the usual exponential kernel are here replaced by Dunkl operators and the generalized exponential kernel K of the Dunkl transform. In case of the symmetric group $S_N$, our setting includes the polynomial eigenfunctions of certain Calogero-Sutherland type operators. The second part of this paper is devoted to the heat equation associated with Dunkl's Laplacian. As in the classical case, the corresponding Cauchy problem is governed by a positive one-parameter semigroup; this is assured by a maximum principle for the generalized Laplacian. The explicit solution to the Cauchy problem involves again the kernel K, which is, on the way, proven to be nonnegative for real arguments.
