An operator algebraic approach for generalized Cardano polynomials

We develop an operator algebraic framework for generalized Cardano polynomials and show how their structure naturally leads to an operator formulation of Cardano method that is compatible with tools and concepts from quantum information theory. The generalized Cardano polynomials are constructed as a generalization of classical theory of Cardano formula for cubic equation, as well as through the spectral properties of a circular operator W, expressed in terms of n dimensional clock operator. This representation embeds Cardano type identities into the spectral theory of circulant operators. The construction clarifies the algebraic structure and solvability of a family of two parameters odd order polynomials, classically and through operator methods familiar in QIT. As application, spectral calculus on operator algebras is used to construct Cardano generated POVMs.

Calculating the Projective Norm of higher-order tensors using a gradient descent algorithm

Projective Norms are a class of tensor norms that map on the input and output spaces. These norms are useful for providing a measure of entanglement. Calculating the projective norms is an NP-hard problem, which creates challenges in computing due to the complexity of the exponentially growing parameter space for higher-order tensors. We develop a novel gradient descent algorithm to estimate the projective norm of higher-order tensors. The algorithm guarantees convergence to a minimum nuclear rank decomposition of our given tensor. We extend our algorithm to symmetric tensors and density matrices. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm by computing the nuclear rank and the projective norm for both pure and mixed states and provide numerical evidence for the same.

Order preserving maps on quantum measurements

We study the partially ordered set of equivalence classes of quantum measurements endowed with the post-processing partial order. The post-processing order is fundamental as it enables to compare measurements by their intrinsic noise and it gives grounds to define the important concept of quantum incompatibility. Our approach is based on mapping this set into a simpler partially ordered set using an order preserving map and investigating the resulting image. The aim is to ignore unnecessary details while keeping the essential structure, thereby simplifying e.g. detection of incompatibility. One possible choice is the map based on Fisher information introduced by Huangjun Zhu, known to be an order morphism taking values in the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. We explore the properties of that construction and improve Zhu's incompatibility criterion by adding a constraint depending on the number of measurement outcomes. We generalize this type of construction to other ordered vector spaces and we show that this map is optimal among all quadratic maps.

Multipartite entanglement detection via projective tensor norms

We introduce and study a class of entanglement criteria based on the idea of applying local contractions to an input multipartite state, and then computing the projective tensor norm of the output. More precisely, we apply to a mixed quantum state a tensor product of contractions from the Schatten class $S_1$ to the Euclidean space $\ell_2$, which we call entanglement testers. We analyze the performance of this type of criteria on bipartite and multipartite systems, for general pure and mixed quantum states, as well as on some important classes of symmetric quantum states. We also show that previously studied entanglement criteria, such as the realignment and the SIC POVM criteria, can be viewed inside this framework. This allows us to answer in the positive two conjectures of Shang, Asadian, Zhu, and Gühne by deriving systematic relations between the performance of these two criteria.

Random positive operator valued measures

We introduce several notions of random positive operator valued measures (POVMs), and we prove that some of them are equivalent. We then study statistical properties of the effect operators for the canonical examples, obtaining limiting eigenvalue distributions with the help of free probability theory. Similarly, we obtain the large system limit for several quantities of interest in quantum information theory, such as the sharpness, the noise content, and the probability range. Finally, we study different compatibility criteria, and we compare them for generic POVMs.

Absolutely separating quantum maps and channels

Absolutely separable states $\varrho$ remain separable under arbitrary unitary transformations $U \varrho U^†$. By example of a three qubit system we show that in multipartite scenario neither full separability implies bipartite absolute separability nor the reverse statement holds. The main goal of the paper is to analyze quantum maps resulting in absolutely separable output states. Such absolutely separating maps affect the states in a way, when no Hamiltonian dynamics can make them entangled afterwards. We study general properties of absolutely separating maps and channels with respect to bipartitions and multipartitions and show that absolutely separating maps are not necessarily entanglement breaking. We examine stability of absolutely separating maps under tensor product and show that $Φ^{\otimes N}$ is absolutely separating for any $N$ if and only if $Φ$ is the tracing map. Particular results are obtained for families of local unital multiqubit channels, global generalized Pauli channels, and combination of identity, transposition, and tracing maps acting on states of arbitrary dimension. We also study the interplay between local and global noise components in absolutely separating bipartite depolarizing maps and discuss the input states with high resistance to absolute separability.

On symmetric decompositions of positive operators

Inspired by some problems in Quantum Information Theory, we present some results concerning decompositions of positive operators acting on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We focus on decompositions by families having geometrical symmetry with respect to the Euclidean scalar product and we characterize all such decompositions, comparing our results with the case of SIC--POVMs from Quantum Information Theory. We also generalize some Welch--type inequalities from the literature.

Thresholds for reduction-related entanglement criteria in quantum information theory

We consider random bipartite quantum states obtained by tracing out one subsystem from a random, uniformly distributed, tripartite pure quantum state. We compute thresholds for the dimension of the system being traced out, so that the resulting bipartite quantum state satisfies the reduction criterion in different asymptotic regimes. We consider as well the basis-independent version of the reduction criterion (the absolute reduction criterion), computing thresholds for the corresponding eigenvalue sets. We do the same for other sets relevant in the study of absolute separability, using techniques from random matrix theory. Finally, we gather and compare the known values for the thresholds corresponding to different entanglement criteria, and conclude with a list of open questions.

Positive reduction from spectra

We study the problem of whether all bipartite quantum states having a prescribed spectrum remain positive under the reduction map applied to one subsystem. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions, in the form of a family of linear inequalities, which the spectrum has to verify. Our conditions become explicit when one of the two subsystems is a qubit, as well as for further sets of states. Finally, we introduce a family of simple entanglement criteria for spectra, closely related to the reduction and positive partial transpose criteria, which also provide new insight into the set of spectra that guarantee separability or positivity of the partial transpose.

On the reduction criterion for random quantum states

In this paper we study the reduction criterion for detecting entanglement of large dimensional bipartite quantum systems. We first obtain an explicit formula for the moments of a random quantum state to which the reduction criterion has been applied. We show that the empirical eigenvalue distribution of this random matrix converges strongly to a limit that we compute, in three different asymptotic regimes. We then employ tools from free probability to study the asymptotic positivity of the reduction operators. Finally, we compare the reduction criterion with other entanglement criteria, via thresholds.

Approximating incompatible von Neumann measurements simultaneously

We study the problem of performing orthogonal qubit measurements simultaneously. Since these measurements are incompatible, one has to accept additional imprecision. An optimal joint measurement is the one with the least possible imprecision. All earlier considerations of this problem have concerned only joint measurability of observables, while in this work we also take into account conditional state transformations (i.e., instruments). We characterize the optimal joint instrument for two orthogonal von Neumann instruments as being the Luders instrument of the optimal joint observable.
