Dark Radiation in extended cosmological scenarios

Recent cosmological data have provided evidence for a "dark" relativistic background at high statistical significance. Parameterized in terms of the number of relativistic degrees of freedom Neff, however, the current data seems to indicate a higher value than the one expected in the standard scenario based on three active neutrinos. This dark radiation component can be characterized not only by its abundance but also by its clustering properties, as its effective sound speed and its viscosity parameter. It is therefore crucial to study the correlations among the dark radiation properties and key cosmological parameters, as the dark energy equation of state or the running of the scalar spectral index, with current and future CMB data. We find that dark radiation with viscosity parameters different from their standard values may be misinterpreted as an evolving dark energy component or as a running spectral index in the power spectrum of primordial fluctuations.

Amplitudes of thermal and kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signals from small-scale CMB anisotropies

While the arcminute-scale Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies are due to secondary effects, point sources dominate the total anisotropy power spectrum. At high frequencies the point sources are primarily in the form of dusty, star-forming galaxies. Both Herschel and Planck have recently measured the anisotropy power spectrum of cosmic infrared background (CIB) generated by dusty, star-forming galaxies from degree to sub-arcminute angular scales, including the non-linear clustering of these galaxies at multipoles of 3000 to 6000 relevant to CMB secondary anisotropy studies. We scale the CIB angular power spectra to CMB frequencies and interpret the combined WMAP-7 year and arcminute-scale Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and South Pole Telescope (SPT) CMB power spectra measurements to constrain the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effects. Allowing the CIB clustering amplitude to vary, we constrain the amplitudes of thermal and kinetic SZ power spectra at 150 GHz.

The Fine Structure Constant and the CMB Damping Scale

The recent measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies at arcminute angular scales performed by the ACT and SPT experiments are probing the damping regime of CMB fluctuations. The analysis of these datasets unexpectedly suggests that the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom is larger than the standard value of Neff = 3.04, and inconsistent with it at more than two standard deviations. In this paper we study the role of a mechanism that could affect the shape of the CMB angular fluctuations at those scales, namely a change in the recombination process through variations in the fine structure constant. We show that the new CMB data significantly improve the previous constraints on variations of α, with α/α0 = 0.984 \pm 0.005, i.e. hinting also to a more than two standard deviation from the current, local, value α0. A significant degeneracy is present between α and Neff, and when variations in the latter are allowed the constraints on α are relaxed and again consistent with the standard value. Deviations of either parameter from their standard values would imply the presence of new, currently unknown physics.

Constraints on massive sterile neutrino species from current and future cosmological data

Sterile massive neutrinos are a natural extension of the Standard Model of elementary particles. The energy density of the extra sterile massive states affects cosmological measurements in an analogous way to that of active neutrino species. We perform here an analysis of current cosmological data and derive bounds on the masses of the active and the sterile neutrino states as well as on the number of sterile states. The so-called (3+2) models with three sub-eV active massive neutrinos plus two sub-eV massive sterile species is well within the 95% CL allowed regions when considering cosmological data only. If the two extra sterile states have thermal abundances at decoupling, Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds compromise the viability of (3+2) models. Forecasts from future cosmological data on the active and sterile neutrino parameters are also presented. Independent measurements of the neutrino mass from tritium beta decay experiments and of the Hubble constant could shed light on sub-eV massive sterile neutrino scenarios.

Constraints on massive sterile plus active neutrino species in non minimal cosmologies

Cosmological measurements are affected by the energy density of both active and sterile massive neutrinos. We extend here a recent analysis of current cosmological data to non minimal cosmologies. Several possible scenarios are examined: a constant w \neq -1 dark energy equation of state, a non flat universe, a time varying dark energy component and coupled dark matter dark energy universes or modified gravity scenarios. When considering cosmological data only, (3+2) massive neutrino models with ~0.5 eV sterile species are allowed at 95% CL. This scenario has been shown to reconcile reactor, LSND and MiniBooNE positive signals with null results from other searches. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds could compromise the viability of (3+2) models if the two sterile species are fully thermalized states at decoupling.

The Case for Dark Radiation

Combined analyses of recent cosmological data are showing interesting hints for the presence of an extra relativistic component, coined Dark Radiation. Here we perform a new search for Dark Radiation, parametrizing it with an effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom parameter, $\neff$. We show that the cosmological data we considered are clearly suggesting the presence for an extra relativistic component with $\neff=4.08_{-0.68}^{+0.71}$ at 95% c.l.. Performing an analysis on Dark Radiation sound speed $c_{\rm eff}$ and viscosity $c_{\rm vis}$ parameters, we found $\ceff=0.312\pm0.026$ and $\cvis=0.29_{-0.16}^{+0.21}$ at 95% c.l., consistent with the expectations of a relativistic free streaming component ($\ceff=\cvis$=1/3). Assuming the presence of 3 relativistic neutrinos we constrain the extra relativistic component with $\nnus=1.10_{-0.72}^{+0.79}$ and $\ceff=0.24_{-0.13}^{+0.08}$ at 95% c.l. while $\cvis$ results as unconstrained. Assuming a massive neutrino component we obtain further indications for Dark Radiation with $\nnus=1.12_{-0.74}^{+0.86}$ at 95% c.l. .

CMB Neutrino Mass Bounds and Reionization

Current cosmic microwave background (CMB) bounds on the sum of the neutrino masses assume a sudden reionization scenario described by a single parameter that determines the onset of reionization. We investigate the bounds on the neutrino mass in a more general reionization scenario based on a principal component approach. We found the constraint on the sum of the neutrino masses from CMB data can be relaxed by a $\sim$40% in a generalized reionization scenario. Moreover, the amplitude of the r.m.s. mass fluctuations $σ_8$ is also considerably lower providing a better consistency with a low amplitude of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signal.
