The real spectrum compactification of character varieties

We study the real spectrum compactification of character varieties of finitely generated groups in semisimple Lie groups. This provides a compactification with good topological properties, and we interpret the boundary points in terms of actions on building-like spaces. Among the applications we give a general framework guaranteeing the existence of equivariant harmonic maps in building-like spaces.

On projective Anosov subgroups of symplectic groups

We prove that a word hyperbolic group whose Gromov boundary properly contains a $2$-sphere cannot admit a projective Anosov representation into $\mathsf{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{C})$, $m\in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove that a word hyperbolic group which admits a projective Anosov representation into $\mathsf{Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{R})$ is virtually a free group or virtually a surface group, a result established indepedently by Dey-Greenberg-Riestenberg.

Weyl chamber length compactification of the ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb R)\times{\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb R)$ maximal character variety

We study the vectorial length compactification of the space of conjugacy classes of maximal representations of the fundamental group $Γ$ of a closed hyperbolic surface $Σ$ in ${\rm PSL}(2,\mathbb R)^n$. We identify the boundary with the sphere $\mathbb P((\mathcal{ML})^n)$, where $\mathcal{ML}$ is the space of measured geodesic laminations on $Σ$. In the case $n=2$, we give a geometric interpretation of the boundary as the space of homothety classes of $\mathbb R^2$-mixed structures on $Σ$. We associate to such a structure a dual tree-graded space endowed with an $\mathbb R_+^2$-valued metric, which we show to be universal with respect to actions on products of two $\mathbb R$-trees with the given length spectrum.

Positive crossratios, barycenters, trees and applications to maximal representations

We study metric properties of maximal framed representations of fundamental groups of surfaces in symplectic groups over real closed fields, interpreted as actions on Bruhat-Tits buildings endowed with adapted Finsler norms. We prove that the translation length can be computed as intersection with a geodesic current, give sufficient conditions guaranteeing that such a current is a multicurve, and, if the current is a measured lamination, construct an isometric embedding of the associated tree in the building. These results are obtained as application of more general results of independent interest on positive crossratios and actions with compatible barycenters.

Boundary maps and maximal representations on infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric spaces

We define a Toledo number for actions of surface groups and complex hyperbolic lattices on infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric spaces, which allows us to define maximal representations. When the target is not of tube type we show that there cannot be Zariski-dense maximal representations, and whenever the existence of a boundary map can be guaranteed, the representation preserves a finite dimensional totally geodesic subspace on which the action is maximal. In the opposite direction we construct examples of geometrically dense maximal representation in the infinite dimensional Hermitian symmetric space of tube type and finite rank. Our approach is based on the study of boundary maps, that we are able to construct in low ranks or under some suitable Zariski-density assumption, circumventing the lack of local compactness in the infinite dimensional setting.

Geometric limits of cyclic subgroups of SO_0(1, k+1) and SU(1, k+1)

We study geometric limits of convex-cocompact cyclic subgroups of the rank 1 groups SO_0(1, k+1) and SU(1, k+1). We construct examples of sequences of subgroups of such groups G that converge algebraically and whose geometric limit strictly contains the algebraic limit, thus generalizing the example first described by Jorgensen for subgroups of SO_0(1,3). We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup of SO_0(1, k+1) to arise as geometric limit of a sequence of cyclic subgroups. We then discuss generalizations of such examples to sequence of representations of free groups, and applications of our constructions in that setting.

Basmajian-type inequalities for maximal representations

For suitable metrics on the locally symmetric space associated to a maximal representation, we prove inequalities between the length of the boundary and the lengths of orthogeodesics that generalize the classical Basmajian's identity from Teichmueller theory. Any equality characterizes diagonal embeddings.

A structure theorem for geodesic currents and length spectrum compactifications

We find a canonical decomposition of a geodesic current on a surface of finite type arising from a topological decomposition of the surface along special geodesics. We show that each component either is associated to a measured lamination or has positive systole. For a current with positive systole, we show that the intersection function on the set of closed curves is bilipschitz equivalent to the length function with respect to a hyperbolic metric. We show that the subset of currents with positive systole is open and that the mapping class group acts properly discontinuously on it. As an application, we obtain in the case of compact surfaces a structure theorem on the length functions appearing in the length spectrum compactification both of the Hitchin and of the maximal character varieties and determine therein an open set of discontinuity for the action of the mapping class group.

The zero norm subspace of bounded cohomology of acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We construct combinatorial volume forms of hyperbolic three manifolds fibering over the circle. These forms define non-trivial classes in bounded cohomology. After introducing a new seminorm on exact bounded cohomology, we use these combinatorial classes to show that, in degree 3, the zero norm subspace of the bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group is infinite dimensional. In the appendix we use the same techniques to give a cohomological proof of a lower bound, originally due to Brock, on the volume of the mapping torus of a cobounded pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a closed surface in terms of its Teichmüller translation distance.

Maximal representations, non Archimedean Siegel spaces, and buildings

Let $\mathbb F$ be a real closed field. We define the notion of a maximal framing for a representation of the fundamental group of a surface with values in ${\rm Sp}(2n,\mathbb F)$. We show that ultralimits of maximal representations in ${\rm Sp}(2n,\mathbb R)$ admit such a framing, and that all maximal framed representations satisfy a suitable generalisation of the classical Collar Lemma. In particular this establishes a Collar Lemma for all maximal representations into ${\rm Sp}(2n,\mathbb R)$. We then describe a procedure to get from representations in ${\rm Sp}(2n,\mathbb F)$ interesting actions on affine buildings, and, in the case of representations admitting a maximal framing, we describe the structure of the elements of the group acting with zero translation length.

Maximal representations of complex hyperbolic lattices in SU(m,n)

Let $Γ$ denote a lattice in $SU(1,p)$, with $p$ greater than 1. We show that there exists no Zariski dense maximal representation with target $SU(m,n)$ if $n>m>1$. The proof is geometric and is based on the study of the rigidity properties of the geometry whose points are isotropic $m$-subspaces of a complex vector space $V$ endowed with a Hermitian metric $h$ of signature $(m,n)$ and whose lines correspond to the $2m$ dimensional subspaces of $V$ on which the restriction of $h$ has signature $(m,m)$.

Classification of tight homomorphisms

A totally geodesic map $f:\mathcal X_1\to\mathcal X_2$ between Hermitian symmetric spaces is tight if its image contains geodesic triangles of maximal area. Tight maps were first introduced in [BIW09], and were classified in [Ham13, Ham14, HO14] in the case of irreducible domain. We complete the classification by analyzing also maps from reducible domains. This has applications to the study of maximal representations and of the Hitchin component for representations in the groups $Sp(2n,\mathbb R)$.

Isometric Embeddings in Bounded Cohomology

This paper is devoted to the construction of norm-preserving maps between bounded cohomology groups. For a graph of groups with amenable edge groups we construct an isometric embedding of the direct sum of the bounded cohomology of the vertex groups in the bounded cohomology of the fundamental group of the graph of groups. With a similar technique we prove that if (X,Y) is a pair of CW-complexes and the fundamental group of each connected component of Y is amenable, the isomorphism between the relative bounded cohomology of (X,Y) and the bounded cohomology of X in degree at least 2 is isometric. As an application we provide easy and self-contained proofs of Gromov Equivalence Theorem and of the additivity of the simplicial volume with respect to gluings along π_1-injective boundary components with amenable fundamental group.

Isometric properties of relative bounded cohomology

We show that the isomorphism induced by the inclusion of pairs $(X,\emptyset)\subset (X,Y)$ between the relative bounded cohomology of $(X,Y)$ and the bounded cohomology of $X$ is isometric in degree at least 2 if the fundamental group of each connected component of $Y$ is amenable. As an application we provide a self-contained proof of Gromov Equivalence theorem and a generalization of a result of Fujiwara and Manning on the simplicial volume of generalized Dehn fillings.
