Homodyne-like detection for state-discrimination in the presence of phase noise

We propose an innovative strategy to discriminate between two coherent states affected by either uniform or gaussian phase noise. The strategy is based on a homodyne-like detection scheme with photon-number-resolving detectors in the regime of low-intensity local oscillator. The experimental implementation of the detection scheme involves two hybrid photodetectors, whose outputs are used in post processing to calculate the shot-by-shot photon-number difference. The performance of this strategy is quantified in terms of the error probability in discriminating the noisy coherent signals as a function of the characteristic noise parameters.

Real-time phase-reference monitoring of a quasi-optimal coherent-state receiver

The Kennedy-like receiver is a quasi-optimal receiver employed in binary phase-shift-keyed communication schemes with coherent states. It is based on the interference of the two signals encoding the message with a reference local oscillator and on/off photodetection. We show both theoretically and experimentally that it is possible to extract useful information about the phase reference by Bayesian processing of the very same data sample used to discriminate the signals shot by shot. We demonstrate that the minimum uncertainty in phase estimation, given by the inverse of the Fisher information associated with the statistics of the collected data, can be achieved. We also numerically and experimentally investigate the performances of our phase-estimation method in the presence of phase noise, when either on/off or photon-number resolving detectors are employed.

Luminescence-induced noise in single photon sources based on BBO crystals

Single-photon sources based on the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion play a key role in various applied disciplines of quantum optics. We characterize intrinsic luminescence of BBO crystals as a source of non-removable noise in quantum-optics experiments. By analysing its spectral and temporal properties together with its intensity, we evaluate the impact of luminescence on single-photon state preparation using spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

Spatial properties of twin-beam correlations at low- to high-intensity transition

It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions in dependence on pump-beam parameters including power and transverse profile is investigated.

Coherence properties of high-gain twin beams generated in pump-depletion regime

Twin-beam coherence properties are analyzed both in the spatial and spectral domains at high-gain regime including pump depletion. The increase of the size of intensity auto- and cross-correlation areas at increasing pump power is replaced by a decrease in the pump depletion regime. This effect is interpreted as a progressive loss in the mode selection occurring at high-gain amplification. The experimental determination of the number of spatio-spectral modes from $g^{(2)} $-function measurements confirms this explanation.

Bracket states for communication protocols with coherent states

We present the generation and characterization of the class of bracket states, namely phase-sensitive mixtures of coherent states exhibiting symmetry properties in the phase-space description. A bracket state can be seen as the statistical ensemble arriving at a receiver in a typical coherent-state-based communication channel. We show that when a bracket state is mixed at a beam splitter with a local oscillator, both the emerging beams exhibit a Fano factor larger than 1 and dependent on the relative phase between the input state and the local oscillator. We discuss the possibility to exploit this dependence to monitor the phase difference for the enhancement of the performances of a simple communication scheme based on direct detection. Our experimental setup involves linear optical elements and a pair of photon-number-resolving detectors operated in the mesoscopic photon-number domain.

Absolute calibration of photon-number-resolving detectors with an analog output using twin beams

A method for absolute calibration of a photon-number resolving detector producing analog signals as the output is developed using a twin beam. The method gives both analog-to-digital conversion parameters and quantum detection efficiency for the photon fields. Characteristics of the used twin beam are also obtained. A simplified variant of the method applicable to fields with high signal to noise ratios and suitable for more intense twin beams is suggested.

Gaussian and Non-Gaussian operations on non-Gaussian state: engineering non-Gaussianity

Multiple photon subtraction applied to a displaced phase-averaged coherent state, which is a non-Gaussian classical state, produces conditional states with a non trivial (positive) Glauber-Sudarshan $P$-representation. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this class of conditional states cannot be fully characterized by direct detection of photon numbers. In particular, the non-Gaussianity of the state is a characteristics that must be assessed by phase-sensitive measurements. We also show that the non-Gaussianity of conditional states can be manipulated by choosing suitable conditioning values and composition of phase-averaged states.

Characterizing the non-classicality of mesoscopic optical twin-beam states

We present a robust tool to analyze nonclassical properties of multimode twin-beam states in the mesoscopic photon-number domain. The measurements are performed by direct detection. The analysis exploits three different non-classicality criteria for detected photons exhibiting complementary behavior in the explored intensity regime. Joint signal-idler photon-number distributions and quasi-distributions of integrated intensities are determined and compared with the corresponding distributions of detected photons. Experimental conditions optimal for nonclassical properties of twin-beam states are identified.

Optimal sub-Poissonian light generation from twin beams by photon-number resolving detectors

We generate nonclassical conditional states by exploiting the quantum correlations of multi-mode twin-beam states endowed with a sizeable number of photons. A strong relation between the sub-shot-noise correlations exhibited by twin beams and the sub-Poissonian character of the conditional states is experimentally revealed. It determines optimal conditions for sub-Poissonian light generation.

Characterization of phase-averaged coherent states

We present the full characterization of phase-randomized or phase-averaged coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we report on the suitable formalism to analytically describe the main features of this class of states and on their experimental investigation, that results in agreement with theory. We also show the results we obtained by manipulating the phase-averaged coherent states with linear optical elements and testify their good quality by employing some non-Gaussianity measures and the concept of mutual information.

Experimental quantification of non-Gaussianity of phase-randomized coherent states

We present the experimental investigation of the non-Gaussian nature of some mixtures of Fock states by reconstructing their Wigner function and exploiting two recently introduced measures of non-Gaussianity. In particular, we demonstrate the consistency between the different approaches and the monotonicity of the two measures for states belonging to the class of phase randomized coherent states. Moreover, we prove that the exact behavior of one measure with respect to the other depends on the states under investigation and devise possible criteria to discriminate which measure is more useful for the characterization of the states in realistic applications.

Manipulating the non-Gaussianity of phase-randomized coherent states

We experimentally investigate the non-Gaussian features of the phase-randomized coherent states, a class of states exploited in communication channels and in decoy state-based quantum key distribution protocols. In particular, we reconstruct their phase-insensitive Wigner functions and quantify their non-Gaussianity. The measurements are performed in the mesoscopic photon-number domain by means of a direct detection scheme involving linear detectors.

Polymorphic gene conferring susceptibility to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus typed by ps-resolved FRET on nonamplified genomic DNA

This work concerns the identification of the allelic sequences of the DQB1 gene of the human leukocyte antigen system conferring susceptibility to the development of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in DNA samples with no need of PCR amplification. Our method is based on the time-resolved analysis of a Förster energy-transfer mechanism that occurs in a dual-labeled fluorescent probe specific for the base sequence of the allelic variant of interest. Such an oligonucleotide probe is labeled, at the two ends, by a pair of chromophores that operate as donor and acceptor in a Förster resonant energy-transfer. The donor fluorescence is quenched with an efficiency that is strongly dependent on the donor-to-acceptor distance, hence on the configuration of the probe after hybridization with the DNA containing or not the selected allelic sequence. By time-correlated single-photon counting, performed with an excitation/detection system endowed with 30-ps resolution, we measure the time-resolved fluorescence decay of the donor and discriminate, by means of the decay time value, the DNA bearing the allele conferring susceptibility to IDDM from the DNAs bearing any other sequence in the same region of the DQB1 gene.

Measuring high-order photon-number correlations in multimode pulsed quantum states

We implement a direct detection scheme based on hybrid photodetectors to experimentally investigate high-order correlations for detected photons by means of quantities that can be experimentally accessed. We show their usefulness in fully characterizing a multimode twin-beam state in comparison with classical states and, in particular, we introduce a nonclassicality criterion based on a simple linear combination of high-order correlation functions. Our scheme is self-consistent, allowing the estimation of all the involved parameters (quantum efficiency, number of modes and average energy) directly from the same experimental data. Results are in very good agreement with theory, thus suggesting the exploitation of our scheme for reliable state characterization in quantum technology.

Non-Gaussian states by conditional measurements

We address realistic schemes for the generation of non-Gaussian states of light based on conditional intensity measurements performed on correlated bipartite states. We consider both quantum and classically correlated states and different kind of detection, comparing the resulting non Gaussianity parameters upon varying the input energy and the detection efficiency. We find that quantum correlations generally lead to higher non Gaussianity, at least in the low energy regime. An experimental implementation feasible with current technology is also suggested.
