Phase-Transition-Driven Hyperbolic Optical Response and Directional Polaritons in Epitaxial VO2 Thin Films

Optical anisotropy in crystalline solids enables direction-dependent light-matter interactions and underpins a variety of advanced photonic functionalities. In this context, Vanadium dioxide (VO2) represents a prototypical material that undergoes a reversible MIT near 67°C, accompanied by pronounced electronic, structural, and optical modifications. The MIT not only dramatically modifies the VO2 electrical conductivity but also reshapes its anisotropic optical response, making VO2 an exceptional platform for dynamically tunable photonic and optoelectronic devices. In this work, we investigate how the intrinsic crystalline anisotropy of VO2 induces a hyperbolic optical behavior in the metallic rutile phase. We study two epitaxial VO2 thin films of different thicknesses grown on (110) oriented MgF2 substrates. Broadband polarized spectroscopic measurements, spanning the infrared to UV spectral range, are employed to independently investigate the optical response in both the monoclinic and rutile phases. From these measurements, we extract the optical conductivity and the dielectric function, revealing a pronounced anisotropy in the rutile metallic phase, with an enhanced free-carrier response along the rutile c axis. Our data show that, within a narrow near-infrared spectral window, the real parts of the dielectric tensor components along the two principal axes acquire opposite signs, indicating the emergence of a hyperbolic type-II dispersion. The hyperbolic response is quantitatively evaluated through the quality factor and the degree of dielectric anisotropy, enabling a systematic assessment of VO2 as a thermally switchable, hyperbolic optical medium. These findings expand the understanding of anisotropy-driven optical phenomena in phase-change materials and highlight VO2 thin films as a promising platform for tunable and reconfigurable photonic applications.

Dual Optical Hyperbolicity of PdCoO$_2$ and PdCrO$_2$ Delafossite Single Crystals

Hyperbolic materials exhibit a very peculiar optical anisotropy with simultaneously different signs of the dielectric tensor components. This anisotropy allows the propagation of exotic surface-wave excitations like hyperbolic phonons and plasmon polaritons. While hyperbolic materials hold promise for applications in subwavelength photonics and enhanced light-matter interactions, their natural occurrence is limited to few materials, often accompanied by significant dielectric losses and limited hyperbolic spectral bandwidth. Focusing on PdCoO$_2$ and PdCrO$_2$ delafossite transition-metal oxides, in this paper we demonstrate their unique dual hyperbolic regimes: one localized around a phonon absorption in the mid-infrared spectral region, and the other extending into the visible range. Both hyperbolic regimes show exceptional properties including low dissipation and high hyperbolic quality factors. These results pave the way for innovative applications of delafossite layered metals in subwavelength photonics, imaging, and sensing.

Optimization of highly circularly polarized thermal radiation in $α$-MoO$_3$/$β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ twisted layers

We investigate a bi-layer scheme for circularly polarized infrared thermal radiation. Our approach takes advantage of the strong anisotropy of low-symmetry materials such as $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ and $α$-MoO$_3$. We numerically report narrow-band, high degree of circular polarization (over 0.85), thermal radiation at two typical emission frequencies related to the excitation of $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ optical phonons. Optimization of the degree of circular polarization is achieved by a proper relative tilt of the crystal axes between the two layers. Our simple but effective scheme could set the basis for a new class of lithography-free thermal sources for IR bio-sensing.

Large-area polycrystalline $α$-MoO3 thin films for IR photonics

In recent years, excitation of surface phonon polaritons (SPhPs) in van der Waals materials received wide attention from the nanophotonics community. Alpha-phase Molybdenum trioxide ($α$-MoO3), a naturally occurring biaxial hyperbolic crystal, emerged as a promising polaritonic material due to its ability to support SPhPs for three orthogonal directions at different wavelength bands (range 10-20 $μ$m). Here, we report on the fabrication and IR characterization of large-area (over 1 cm$^2$ size) $α$-MoO3 polycrystalline films deposited on fused silica substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Single alpha-phase MoO3 films exhibiting a polarization-dependent reflection peak at 1006 cm$^{-1}$ with a resonance Q-factor as high as 53 were achieved. Reflection can be tuned via changing incident polarization with a dynamic range of $Δ$R=0.3 at 45 deg. incidence angle. We also report a polarization-independent almost perfect absorption condition (R<0.01) at 972 cm$^{-1}$ which is preserved for a broad angle of incidence. The development of a low-cost polaritonic platform with high-Q resonances in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) range is crucial for a wide number of functionalities including sensors, filters, thermal emitters, and label-free biochemical sensing devices. In this framework our findings appear extremely promising for the further development of lithography-free, scalable films, for efficient and large-scale devices operating in the free space, using far-field detection setups.

Hybrid Thermal Yagi-Uda Nanoantennas for Directional and Narrow Band Long-wavelength IR Radiation Sources

We investigate the possibility of spatially and spectrally controlling the thermal infrared emission by exploitation of the Yagi-Uda antenna design. Hybrid antennas composed of both SiC and Au rods are considered and the contributions of emission from all the elements, at a given equilibrium temperature, are taken into account. We show that the detrimental effect due to thermal emission from the not ideal parasitic elements drastically affect the performances of conventional thermal Au antennas in the 12 micrometers wavelength range. Nevertheless, our results show that the hybrid approach allows the development of efficient narrow-band and high directivity sources. The possibility of exploiting the Yagi-Uda design both in transmission and in reception modes, may open the way to the realization of miniaturized, efficient, robust and cheap sensor devices for mass-market applications.

Evaluation of the optical axis tilt of Zinc oxide films via noncollinear second harmonic generation

We investigated noncollinear second harmonic generation form Zinc oxide films, grown on glass substrates by dual ion beam sputtering technique. At a fixed incidence angle, the generated signal is investigated by scanning the polarization state of both fundamental beams. We show that the map of the generated signal as a function of polarization states of both pump beams, together with the analytical curves, allows to retrieve the orientation of the optical axis and, eventually, its angular tilt, with respect to the surface normal
