Nonlinear Moment Matching for the Simulation-Free Reduction of Structural Systems

This paper transfers the concept of moment matching to nonlinear structural systems and further provides a simulation-free reduction scheme for such nonlinear second-order models. After first presenting the steady-state interpretation of linear moment matching, we then extend this reduction concept to the nonlinear second-order case based on Astolfi [2010]. Then, similar simplifications as in Cruz Varona et al. [2019] are proposed to achieve a simulation-free nonlinear moment matching algorithm. A discussion on the simplifications and their limitations is presented, as well as a numerical example which illustrates the efficiency of the algorithm.

Practicable Simulation-Free Model Order Reduction by Nonlinear Moment Matching

In this paper, a practicable simulation-free model order reduction method by nonlinear moment matching is developed. Based on the steady-state interpretation of linear moment matching, we comprehensively explain the extension of this reduction concept to nonlinear systems presented in [1], provide some new insights and propose some simplifications to achieve a feasible and numerically efficient nonlinear model reduction algorithm. This algorithm relies on the solution of nonlinear systems of equations rather than on the expensive simulation of the original model or the difficult solution of a nonlinear partial differential equation.

Impulse response of bilinear systems based on Volterra series representation

This paper focuses on the systems theory of bilinear dynamical systems using the Volterra series representation. The main contributions are threefold. First, we gain an input-output representation in the frequency domain, where the Laplace transform of the kernels can indeed be interpreted as transfer functions. Then, we derive the response of bilinear systems to a nascent delta function in time domain, i.e. the impulse response of bilinear systems. Finally, we study the relationships between this novel impulse response and the well-known Volterra kernels and adjust those to be compatible to the impulse response.

Parametric model order reduction and its application to inverse analysis of large nonlinear coupled cardiac problems

Predictive high-fidelity finite element simulations of human cardiac mechanics co\-mmon\-ly require a large number of structural degrees of freedom. Additionally, these models are often coupled with lumped-parameter models of hemodynamics. High computational demands, however, slow down model calibration and therefore limit the use of cardiac simulations in clinical practice. As cardiac models rely on several patient-specific parameters, just one solution corresponding to one specific parameter set does not at all meet clinical demands. Moreover, while solving the nonlinear problem, 90\% of the computation time is spent solving linear systems of equations. We propose a novel approach to reduce only the structural dimension of the monolithically coupled structure-windkessel system by projection onto a lower-dimensional subspace. We obtain a good approximation of the displacement field as well as of key scalar cardiac outputs even with very few reduced degrees of freedom while achieving considerable speedups. For subspace generation, we use proper orthogonal decomposition of displacement snapshots. To incorporate changes in the parameter set into our reduced order model, we provide a comparison of subspace interpolation methods. We further show how projection-based model order reduction can be easily integrated into a gradient-based optimization and demonstrate its performance in a real-world multivariate inverse analysis scenario. Using the presented projection-based model order reduction approach can significantly speed up model personalization and could be used for many-query tasks in a clinical setting.

Model reduction of linear time-varying systems with applications for moving loads

In this paper we consider different model reduction techniques for systems with moving loads. Due to the time-dependency of the input and output matrices, the application of time-varying projection matrices for the reduction offers new degrees of freedom, which also come along with some challenges. This paper deals with both simple methods for the reduction of particular linear time-varying systems, as well as with a more advanced technique considering the emerging time derivatives.
