A symplectic fourfold

We present a method to construct irreducible symplectic varieties by studying terminalisations of quotient of hyper-Kähler manifolds by non-natural group actions. In particular, we construct irreducible symplectic varieties of dimension $4$ with $b_2 = 4$ and non-quotient singularities: this provides explicit examples of ISVs for which a global Torelli theorem is not known to hold.

Complexity of the usual torus action on Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties

We investigate the class of Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, and its subclass of matrix Schubert varieties, endowed with a naturally defined torus action. Writing a matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_w}$ as $\overline{X_w}=Y_w\times \mathbb{C}^d$ (where $d$ is maximal possible), we show that $Y_w$ can be of complexity-$k$ exactly when $k\neq 1$. Also, we give a combinatorial description of the extremal rays of the weight cone of a Kazhdan-Lusztig variety, which in particular turns out to be the edge cone of an acyclic directed graph. As a consequence we show that given permutations $v$ and $w$, the complexity of Kazhdan-Lusztig variety indexed by $(v,w)$ is the same as the complexity of the Richardson variety indexed by $(v,w)$. Finally, we use this description to compute the complexity of certain Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties.

On Rational Recursive Sequences

We study the class of rational recursive sequences (ratrec) over the rational numbers. A ratrec sequence is defined via a system of sequences using mutually recursive equations of depth 1, where the next values are computed as rational functions of the previous values. An alternative class is that of simple ratrec sequences, where one uses a single recursive equation, however of depth k: the next value is defined as a rational function of k previous values. We conjecture that the classes ratrec and simple ratrec coincide. The main contribution of this paper is a proof of a variant of this conjecture where the initial conditions are treated symbolically, using a formal variable per sequence, while the sequences themselves consist of rational functions over those variables. While the initial conjecture does not follow from this variant, we hope that the introduced algebraic techniques may eventually be helpful in resolving the problem. The class ratrec strictly generalises a well-known class of polynomial recursive sequences (polyrec). These are defined like ratrec, but using polynomial functions instead of rational ones. One can observe that if our conjecture is true and effective, then we can improve the complexities of the zeroness and the equivalence problems for polyrec sequences. Currently, the only known upper bound is Ackermanian, which follows from results on polynomial automata. We complement this observation by proving a PSPACE lower bound for both problems for polyrec. Our lower bound construction also implies that the Skolem problem is PSPACE-hard for the polyrec class.

Towards classifying toric degenerations of cubic surfaces

We investigate the class of degenerations of smooth cubic surfaces which are obtained from degenerating their Cox rings to toric algebras. More precisely, we work in the spirit of Sturmfels and Xu who use the theory of Khovanskii bases to determine toric degenerations of Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4 and who leave the question of classifying these degenerations in the degree 3 case as an open problem. In order to carry out this classification we describe an approach which is closely related to tropical geometry and present partial results in this direction.

Crepant resolutions of 3-dimensional quotient singularities via Cox rings

We study Cox rings of crepant resolutions of quotient singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/G$ where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $SL(3,\mathbb{C})$. We use them to obtain information on the geometric structure of these resolutions, number of different resolutions and relations between them. In particular, we treat explicitly several examples where $G$ contains elements of age 2.

Equivariant Hirzebruch classes and Molien series of quotient singularities

We study properties of the Hirzebruch class of quotient singularities $\mathbb{C}^n/G$, where $G$ is a finite matrix group. The main result states that the Hirzebruch class coincides with the Molien series of $G$ under suitable substitution of variables. The Hirzebruch class of a crepant resolution can be described specializing the orbifold elliptic genus constructed by Borisov and Libgober. It is equal to the combination of Molien series of centralizers of elements of $G$. This is an incarnation of the McKay correspondence. The results are illustrated with several examples, in particular of 4-dimensional symplectic quotient singularities.

Khovanskii bases of Cox-Nagata rings and tropical geometry

The Cox ring of a del Pezzo surface of degree 3 has a distinguished set of 27 minimal generators. We investigate conditions under which the initial forms of these generators generate the initial algebra of this Cox ring. Sturmfels and Xu provide a classification in the case of degree 4 del Pezzo surfaces by subdividing the tropical Grassmannian $\operatorname{TGr}(2,\mathbb{Q}^5)$. After providing the necessary background on Cox-Nagata rings and Khovanskii bases, we review the classification obtained by Sturmfels and Xu. Then we describe our classification problem in the degree 3 case and its connections to tropical geometry. In particular, we show that two natural candidates, $\operatorname{TGr}(3,\mathbb{Q}^6)$ and the Naruki fan, are insufficient to carry out the classification.

Computing resolutions of quotient singularities

Let $G\subseteq GL(n)$ be a finite group without pseudo-reflections. We present an algorithm to compute and verify a candidate for the Cox ring of a resolution $X\rightarrow \mathbb{C}^n/G$, which is based just on the geometry of the singularity $\mathbb{C}^n/G$, without further knowledge of its resolutions. We explain the use of our implementation of the algorithms in Singular. As an application, we determine the Cox rings of resolutions $X\rightarrow \mathbb{C}^3/G$ for all $G\subseteq GL(3)$ with the aforementioned property and of order $|G|\leq 12$. We also provide examples in dimension 4.

On 81 symplectic resolutions of a 4-dimensional quotient by a group of order 32

We provide a construction of 81 symplectic resolutions of a 4-dimensional quotient singularity obtained by an action of a group of order 32. The existence of such resolutions is known by a result of Bellamy and Schedler. Our explicit construction is obtained via GIT quotient of the spectrum of a ring graded in the Picard group generated by the divisors associated to the conjugacy classes of symplectic reflections of the group in question. As the result we infer the geometric structure of these resolutions and their flops. Moreover, we represent the group in question as a group of automorphisms of an abelian 4-fold so that the resulting quotient has singularities with symplectic resolutions. This yields a new Kummer-type symplectic 4-fold.

Cox rings of some symplectic resolutions of quotient singularities

We investigate Cox rings of symplectic resolutions of quotients of $\mathbb{C}^{2n}$ by finite symplectic group actions. We propose a finite generating set of the Cox ring of a symplectic resolution and prove that under a condition concerning monomial valuations it is sufficient. Also, three 4-dimensional examples are described in detail. Generators of the (expected) Cox rings of symplectic resolutions are computed and in one case a resolution is constructed as a GIT quotient of the spectrum of the Cox ring.

A very special EPW sextic and two IHS fourfolds

We show that the Hilbert scheme of two points on the Vinberg $K3$ surface has a 2:1 map onto a very symmetric EPW sextic $Y$ in $\mathbb{P}^5$. The fourfold $Y$ is singular along $60$ planes, $20$ of which form a complete family of incident planes. This solves a problem of Morin and O'Grady and establishes that $20$ is the maximal cardinality of such a family of planes. Next, we show that this Hilbert scheme is birationally isomorphic to the Kummer type IHS fourfold $X_0$ constructed in [DW]. We find that $X_0$ is also related to the Debarre-Varley abelian fourfold.

Phylogenetic invariants for $\mathbb{Z}_3$ scheme-theoretically

We study phylogenetic invariants of models of evolution whose group of symmetries is the cyclic group with 3 elements. We prove that projective schemes corresponding to the ideal I of phylogenetic invariants of such a model and to its subideal I' generated by elements of degree at most 3 are the same. This is motivated by a conjecture of Sturmfels and Sullivant, which would imply that I = I'.

Cox rings of minimal resolutions of surface quotient singularities

We investigate Cox rings of minimal resolutions of surface quotient singularities and provide two descriptions of these rings. The first one is the equation for the spectrum of a Cox ring, which is a hypersurface in an affine space. The second is the set of generators of the Cox ring viewed as a subring of the coordinate ring of a product of a torus and another surface quotient singularity. In addition, we obtain an explicit description of the minimal resolution as a divisor in a toric variety.

Phylogenetic invariants for group-based models

In this paper we investigate properties of algebraic varieties representing group-based phylogenetic models. We propose a method of generating many phylogenetic invariants. We prove that we obtain all invariants for any tree for the binary Jukes-Cantor model. We conjecture that our method can give all phylogenetic invariants for any tree. We show that for 3-Kimura our conjecture is equivalent to the conjecture of Sturmfels and Sullivant. This, combined with the results of Sturmfels and Sullivant, would make it possible to determine all phylogenetic invariants for any tree for 3-Kimura model, and also other phylogenetic models. Next we give the (first) example of a non-normal general group-based model for an abelian group. Following Kubjas we also determine some invariants of group-based models showing that the associated varieties do not have to be deformation equivalent.

On Kummer 3-folds

We investigate a generalization of Kummer construction, as introduced in a recent paper by M. Andreatta and J.A. Wisniewski. The aim of this work is to classify 3-dimensional Kummer varieties by computing their Poincare polynomials.
