Reverse Isoperimetric Properties of Thick $\lambda$-Concave Bodies in the Hyperbolic Plane

In this paper we address the reverse isoperimetric inequality for convex bodies with uniform curvature constraints in the hyperbolic plane $\mathbb{H}^2$. We prove that the\textit{ thick $\lambda$-sausage} body, that is, the convex domain bounded by two equal circular arcs of curvature $\lambda$ and two equal arcs of hypercircle of curvature $1 / \lambda$, is the unique minimizer of area among all bodies $K \subset \mathbb{H}^2$ with a given length and with curvature of $\partial K$ satisfying $1 / \lambda \leq \kappa \leq \lambda$ (in a weak sense). We call this class of bodies \textit{thick $\lambda$-concave} bodies, in analogy to the Euclidean case where a body is $\lambda$-concave if $0 \leq \kappa \leq \lambda$. The main difficulty in the hyperbolic setting is that the inner parallel bodies of a convex body are not necessarily convex. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce an extra assumption of thickness $\kappa \geq 1/\lambda$.

Magnetic rings

We study functional and spectral properties of perturbations of the magnetic Laplace operator on the circle. This operator appears when considering the restriction to the unit circle of a two-dimensional Schr{\"o}dinger operator with the Bohm-Aharonov vector potential. We prove a Hardy-type inequality on the two-dimensional Euclidean space and, on the circle, a sharp interpolation inequality and a sharp Keller-Lieb-Thirring inequality.

Symmetry and symmetry breaking: rigidity and flows in elliptic PDEs

The issue of symmetry and symmetry breaking is fundamental in all areas of science. Symmetry is often assimilated to order and beauty while symmetry breaking is the source of many interesting phenomena such as phase transitions, instabilities, segregation, self-organization, etc. In this contribution we review a series of sharp results of symmetry of nonnegative solutions of nonlinear elliptic differential equation associated with minimization problems on Euclidean spaces or manifolds. Nonnegative solutions of those equations are unique, a property that can also be interpreted as a rigidity result. The method relies on linear and nonlinear flows which reveal deep and robust properties of a large class of variational problems. Local results on linear instability leading to symmetry breaking and the bifurcation of non-symmetric branches of solutions are reinterpreted in a larger, global, variational picture in which our flows characterize directions of descent.

An Abstract Algebraic Logic View on Judgment Aggregation

In the present paper, we propose Abstract Algebraic Logic (AAL) as a general logical framework for Judgment Aggregation. Our main contribution is a generalization of Herzberg's algebraic approach to characterization results in on judgment aggregation and propositional-attitude aggregation, characterizing certain Arrovian classes of aggregators as Boolean algebra and MV-algebra homomorphisms, respectively. The characterization result of the present paper applies to agendas of formulas of an arbitrary selfextensional logic. This notion comes from AAL, and encompasses a vast class of logics, of which classical, intuitionistic, modal, many-valued and relevance logics are special cases. To each selfextensional logic $\Sm$, a unique class of algebras $\Alg\Sm$ is canonically associated by the general theory of AAL. We show that for any selfextensional logic $\Sm$ such that $\Alg\Sm$ is closed under direct products, any algebra in $\Alg\Sm$ can be taken as the set of truth values on which an aggregation problem can be formulated. In this way, judgment aggregation on agendas formalized in classical, intuitionistic, modal, many-valued and relevance logic can be uniformly captured as special cases. This paves the way to the systematic study of a wide array of "realistic agendas" made up of complex formulas, the propositional connectives of which are interpreted in ways which depart from their classical interpretation. This is particularly interesting given that, as observed by Dietrich, nonclassical (subjunctive) interpretation of logical connectives can provide a strategy for escaping impossibility results.
