Critical oriented percolation enhanced along random supercritical horizontal lines

We consider the oriented site percolation model in a random environment introduced by Kesten, Sidoravicius and Vares (2022), in which the horizontal lines of the lattice are independently declared bad or good, sites being open with a probability that depends only on the type of their line. We study the boundary case where the bad lines are critical and the good ones supercritical, so that the model is critical oriented site percolation enhanced along a random set of good lines. We prove that percolation occurs for any positive density of the good lines. An arbitrarily sparse set of arbitrarily weakly enhanced lines suffices, the density of good lines and the strength of the enhancement being decoupled. The proof adapts the renormalization scheme of Archer, Hartarsky, Kolesnik, Olesker-Taylor, Schapira and Valesin (2026). We show that the edge of the process travels at a positive speed, which yields crossing estimates for tilted boxes; during runs of bad lines, we rely on the box-crossing property of Duminil-Copin, Tassion and Teixeira (2018); and the renormalized model dominates the oriented percolation with geometric defects of Hilário, Sá, Sanchis and Teixeira (2026).

Onset of pattern formation for the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

We study the behavior of the solution of a stochastic Allen-Cahn equation $\frac{\partial u_\eps }{\partial t}=\frac 12 \frac{\partial^2 u_\eps }{\partial x^2}+ u_\eps -u_\eps^3+\sqrt\eps\, \dot W$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a suitably large space interval $[-L_\eps , L_\eps]$, starting from the identically zero function, and where $\dot W$ is a space-time white noise. Our main goal is the description, in the small noise limit, of the onset of the phase separation, with the emergence of spatial regions where $u_\eps$ becomes close $1$ or $-1$. The time scale and the spatial structure are determined by a suitable Gaussian process that appears as the solution of the corresponding linearized equation. This issue has been initially examined by De Masi et al. [Ann. Probab. {\bf 22}, (1994), 334-371] in the related context of a class of reaction-diffusion models obtained as a superposition of a speeded up stirring process and a spin flip dynamics on $\{-1,1\}^{\mathbb{Z}_\eps}$, where $\mathbb{Z}_\eps=\mathbb{Z}$ modulo $\lfloor\eps^{-1}L_\eps\rfloor$.

A note on oriented percolation with inhomogeneities and strict inequalities

This note was motivated by natural questions related to oriented percolation on a layered environment that introduces long range dependence. As a convenient tool, we are led to deal with questions on the strict decrease of the percolation parameter in the oriented setup when an extra dimension is added.

Renewal Contact Processes: phase transition and survival

We refine previous results concerning the Renewal Contact Processes. We significantly widen the family of distributions for the interarrival times for which the critical value can be shown to be strictly positive. The result now holds for any dimension $d \ge 1$ and requires only a moment condition slightly stronger than finite first moment. For heavy-tailed interarrival times, we prove a Complete Convergence Theorem and examine when the contact process, conditioned on survival, can be asymptotically predicted knowing the renewal processes. We close with an example of distribution attracted to a stable law of index 1 for which the critical value vanishes.

Dependent Percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$

We consider a dependent percolation model on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The range of dependence is infinite in vertical and horizontal directions. In this context, we prove the existence of a phase transition. The proof exploits a multi-scale renormalization argument that is defined once the environment configuration is suitably good and, which, together with the main estimate for the induction step, comes from Kesten, Sidoravicius and Vares (To appear in {\em Electronic Journal of Probability}, (2022)). This work was inspired by de Lima (Ph.D.Thesis, \emph{Informes de Matemática. IMPA}, Série C-26/2004) where the simpler case of a deterministic environment was considered. It has various applications, including an alternative proof for the phase transition on the two dimensional random stretched lattice proved by Hoffman ({\em Comm. Math. Phys.} {\bf 254}, 1-22 (2005)).

Results on the contact process with dynamic edges or under renewals

We analyze variants of the contact process that are built by modifying the percolative structure given by the graphical construction and develop a robust renormalization argument for proving extinction in such models. With this method, we obtain results on the phase diagram of two models: the Contact Process on Dynamic Edges introduced by Linker and Remenik and a generalization of the Renewal Contact Process introduced by Fontes, Marchetti, Mountford and Vares.

Critical scaling for an anisotropic percolation system on $\mathbb{Z}^2$

In this article, we consider an anisotropic finite-range bond percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^2$. On each horizontal layer $\{(x,i): x \in \mathbb{Z}\}$ we have edges $\langle(x, i),(y, i)\rangle$ for $1 \leq |x - y| \leq N$. There are also vertical edges connecting two nearest neighbor vertices on distinct layers $\langle(x, i), (x, i+1)\rangle$ for $x, i \in\mathbb{Z}$. On this graph we consider the following anisotropic independent percolation model: horizontal edges are open with probability $1/(2N)$, while vertical edges are open with probability $ε$ to be suitably tuned as $N$ grows to infinity. The main result tells that if $ε=κN^{-2/5}$, we see a phase transition in $κ$: positive and finite constants $C_1, C_2$ exist so that there is no percolation if $κ< C_1$ while percolation occurs for $κ> C_2$. The question is motivated by a result on the analogous layered ferromagnetic Ising model at mean field critical temperature [J. Stat. Phys. (2015), 161, 91-123] where the authors showed the existence of multiple Gibbs measures for a fixed value of the vertical interaction and conjectured a change of behavior in $κ$ when the vertical interaction suitably vanishes as $κγ^b$, where $1/γ$ is the range of the horizontal interaction. For the product percolation model we have a value of $b$ that differs from what was conjectured in that paper. The proof relies on the analysis of the scaling limit of the critical branching random walk that dominates the growth process restricted to each horizontal layer and a careful analysis of the true horizontal growth process. This is inspired by works on the long range contact process [Probab. Th. Rel. Fields (1995), 102, 519-545]. A renormalization scheme is used for the percolative regime.

Asymptotic exponential law for the transition time to equilibrium of the metastable kinetic Ising model with vanishing magnetic field

We consider a Glauber dynamics associated with the Ising model on a large two-dimensional box with with minus boundary conditions and in the limit of a vanishing positive external magnetic field. The volume of this box increases quadratically in the inverse of the magnetic field. We show that at subcritical temperature and for a large class of starting measures, including measures that are supported by configurations with macroscopic plus-spin droplets, the system rapidly relaxes to some metastable equilibrium ---with typical configurations made of microscopic plus-phase droplets in a sea of minus spins--- before making a transition at an asymptotically exponential random time towards equilibrium ---with typical configurations made of microscopic minus-phase droplets in a sea of plus spins inside a large contour that separates this plus phase from the boundary. We get this result by bounding from above the local relaxation times towards metastable and stable equilibria. This makes possible to give a pathwise description of such a transition, to control the asymptotic behaviour of the mixing time in terms of soft capacities and to give estimates of these capacities.

On the compatibility of binary sequences

An ordered pair of semi-infinite binary sequences $(η,ξ)$ is said to be compatible if there is a way of removing a certain number (possibly infinite) of ones from $η$ and zeroes from $ξ$, whichwould map both sequences to the same semi-infinite sequence. This notion was introduced by Peter Winkler, who also posed the following question: $η$ and $ξ$ being independent i.i.d. Bernoulli sequences with parameters $p^\prime$ and $p$ respectively, does it exist $(p', p)$ so that the set of compatible pairs has positive measure? It is known that this does not happen for $p$ and $p^\prime$ very close to 1/2. In the positive direction, we construct, for any $ε> 0$, a deterministic binary sequence $η_ε$ whose set of zeroes has Hausdorff dimension larger than $1-ε$, and such that $\mathbb{P}_p {ξ\colon (η_ε,ξ) \text {is compatible}} > 0$ for $p$ small enough, where $\mathbb{P}_p$ stands for the product Bernoulli measure with parameter $p$.
