From a local ring to its associated graded algebra

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a complete local ring, and $G={\rm gr}_{\mathfrak{m}}(R)$ be its associated graded ring. We introduce a homogenization technique which allows to relate $G$ to the special fiber and $R$ to the generic fiber of a "Gröbner-like" deformation. Using this technique we prove sharp results concerning the connectedness of $R$ and $G$. We also construct a family of local domains which fail to satisfy Abhyankar's inequality for the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity. However, we prove a version of the inequality which holds when $R$ is connected in codimension one.

On the rate of generic Gorenstein $K$-algebras

The rate of a standard graded $K$-algebra $A$ is a measure of the growth of the shifts in a minimal free resolution of $K$ as an $A$-module. In particular $A$ has rate one if and only if it is Koszul. It is known that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra of embedding dimension $n \geq 3$ and socle degree $s=3$ is Koszul. We prove that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra with $n\geq 4$ and $s \ge 3 $ has rate $ \lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor. $ In the process we show that such an algebra is generated in degree $\lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor +1. $ This gives a partial positive answer to a longstanding conjecture stated by the first author on the minimal free resolution of a generic Artinian Gorenstein ring of odd socle degree.

Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of powers of ideals in dimension two

We study the behavior of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of powers of an ideal in a local ring. In dimension two, we provide answers to some problems raised by Smirnov, and give a criterion to answer one of his questions in terms of a "Ratliff-Rush version" of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.

Almost finitely generated inverse systems and reduced k-algebras

The purpose of this paper is to characterize one-dimensional local domains, or more in general reduced, in terms of its Macaulay's inverse system. This leads to study almost finitely generated modules in the divided power ring. We specialize the results to a numerical semigroup ring by computing explicitly its inverse system. In the graded case we characterize reduced arithmetically Gorenstein $0$-dimensional schemes.

Normal Hilbert coefficients and elliptic ideals in normal two-dimensional singularities

Let $(A,\mathfrak m)$ be an excellent two-dimensional normal local domain. In this paper we study the elliptic and the strongly elliptic ideals of $A$ with the aim to characterize elliptic and strongly elliptic singularities, according to the definitions given by Wagreich and by Yau. In analogy with the rational singularities, in the main result we characterize a strongly elliptic singularity in terms of the normal Hilbert coefficients of the integrally closed $\mathfrak m$-primary ideals of $A$. Unlike $p_g$-ideals, elliptic ideals and strongly elliptic ideals are not necessarily normal and necessary and sufficient conditions for being normal are given. In the last section we discuss the existence (and the effective construction) of strongly elliptic ideals in any two-dimensional normal local ring.

On the structure of the Sally module and the second normal Hilbert coefficient

The Hilbert coefficients of the normal filtration give important geometric information on the base ring like the pseudo-rationality. The Sally module was introduced by W.V. Vasconcelos and it is useful to connect the Hilbert coefficients to the homological properties of the associated graded module of a Noetherian filtration. In this paper we give a complete structure of the Sally module in the case the second normal Hilbert coefficient attains almost minimal value in an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring. As a consequence, in this case we present a complete description of the Hilbert function of the associated graded ring of the normal filtration. A deep analysis of the vanishing of the third Hilbert coefficient has been necessary. This study is related to a long-standing conjecture stated by S. Itoh.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and Ratliff-Rush closure

We establish strong relationships between the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the Ratliff-Rush closure of an ideal. Our results have several interesting consequences on the computation of the Ratliff-Rush closure, the stability of the Ratliff-Rush filtration, the invariance of the reduction number, and the computation of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and the fiber ring. In particular, we prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Rees algebra and of the fiber ring are equal for large classes of monomial ideals in two variables, thereby verifying a conjecture of Eisenbud and Ulrich for these cases.

A filtration of the Sally module and the First normal Hilbert Coefficient

The Sally module of an ideal is an important tool to interplay between Hilbert coefficients and the properties of the associated graded ring. In this paper we give new insights on the structure of the Sally module. We apply these results characterizing the almost minimal value of the first Hilbert coefficient in the case of the normal filtration in an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring.

The structure of the inverse system of Gorenstein k-algebras

Macaulay's Inverse System gives an effective method to construct Artinian Gorenstein k-algebras. To date a general structure for Gorenstein k-algebras of any dimension (and codimension) is not understood. In this paper we extend Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the submodules of the divided power ring in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional k-algebras. We discuss effective methods for constructing Gorenstein graded rings. Several examples illustrating our results are given.

Artinian level algebras of socle degree 4

In this paper we study the O-sequences of the local (or graded) $K$-algebras of socle degree $4.$ More precisely, we prove that an O-sequence $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, h_4)$, where $h_4 \geq 2,$ is the $h$-vector of a local level $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3\leq 3 h_4.$ We also prove that $h=(1, 3, h_2, h_3, 1)$ is the $h$-vector of a local Gorenstein $K$-algebra if and only if $h_3 \leq 3$ and $h_2 \leq \binom{h_3+1}{2}+(3-h_3).$ In each of these cases we give an effective method to construct a local level $K$-algebra with a given $h$-vector. Moreover we refine a result by Elias and Rossi by showing that if $h=(1,h_1, h_2, h_3, 1)$ is an unimodal Gorenstein O-sequence, then $h$ forces the corresponding Gorenstein $K$-algebra to be canonically graded if and only if $h_1=h_3 $ and $h_2=\binom{h_1+1}{2}, $ that is the $h$-vector is maximal.

The structure of the Sally module of integrally closed ideals

The first two Hilbert coefficients of a primary ideal play an important role in commutative algebra and in algebraic geometry. In this paper we give a complete algebraic structure of the Sally module of integrally closed ideals $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $A$ satisfying the equality $\mathrm{e}_1(I)=\mathrm{e}_0(I)-\ell_A(A/I)+\ell_A(I^2/QI)+1, $ where $Q$ is a minimal reduction of $I$, and $\mathrm{e}_0(I)$ and $\mathrm{e}_1(I)$ denote the first two Hilbert coefficients of $I, $ respectively the multiplicity and the Chern number of $I$. This almost extremal value of $\mathrm{e}_1(I) $ with respect classical inequalities holds a complete description of the homological and the numerical invariants of the associated graded ring. Examples are given.

The Tangent Cone of a local ring of codimension 2

Let $(S, \mathfrak n) $ be a regular local ring and let $I \subseteq \mathfrak n^2 $ be a perfect ideal of $S. $ Sharp upper bounds on the minimal number of generators of $I$ are known in terms of the Hilbert function of $R=S/I. $ Starting from information on the ideal $I, $ for instance the minimal number of generators, a difficult task is to find good bounds on the minimal number of generators of the leading ideal $I^* $, which defines the tangent cone of $R$ or to give information on its graded structure. Motivated by papers of S.C. Kothari, S. Goto ${\it{et al.}}$ concerning the leading ideal of a complete intersection $I=(f,g) $ in a regular local ring, we present results provided ht$(I)=2.$ If $I$ is a complete intersection, we prove that the Hilbert function of $R$ determines the graded Betti numbers of the leading ideal and, as a consequence, we recover most of the results of the previously quoted papers. The description is more complicated if $ν(I) >2$ and a careful investigation can be provided when $ν(I)=3. $ Several examples illustrating our results are given.

Bounds on the normal Hilbert coefficients

In this paper we consider extremal and almost extremal bounds on the normal Hilbert coefficients of ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals of an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of dimension $d>0$ and infinite residue field. In these circumstances we show that the associated graded ring of the normal filtration of the ideal is either Cohen-Macaulay or almost Cohen-Macaulay.

Poincaré series of modules over compressed Gorenstein local rings

Given positive integers e and s we consider Gorenstein Artinian local rings R of embedding dimension e whose maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\mathfrak{m}^s\ne 0=\mathfrak{m}^{s+1}$. We say that R is a compressed Gorenstein local ring when it has maximal length among such rings. It is known that generic Gorenstein Artinian algebras are compressed. If $s\ne 3$, we prove that the Poincare series of all finitely generated modules over a compressed Gorenstein local ring are rational, sharing a common denominator. A formula for the denominator is given. When s is even this formula depends only on the integers e and s. Note that for $s=3$ examples of compressed Gorenstein local rings with transcendental Poincare series exist, due to Bøgvad.

Regularity and linearity defect of modules over local rings

Given a finitely generated module $M$ over a commutative local ring (or a standard graded $k$-algebra) $(R,\m,k) $ we detect its complexity in terms of numerical invariants coming from suitable $\m$-stable filtrations $\mathbb{M}$ on $M$. We study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M) $ and the linearity defect of $M,$ denoted $\ld_R(M),$ through a deep investigation based on the theory of standard bases. If $M$ is a graded $R$-module, then $\reg_R(gr_{\mathbb{M}}(M)) <\infty$ implies $\reg_R(M)<\infty$ and the converse holds provided $M$ is of homogenous type. An analogous result can be proved in the local case in terms of the linearity defect. Motivated by a positive answer in the graded case, we present for local rings a partial answer to a question raised by Herzog and Iyengar of whether $\ld_R(k)<\infty$ implies $R$ is Koszul.

Koszul algebras and regularity

This is a survey paper on commutative Koszul algebras and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We describe several techniques to establish the Koszulness of algebras. We discuss variants of the Koszul property such as strongly Koszul, absolutely Koszul and universally Koszul. We present several open problems related with these notions and their local variants.

Poincaré series and deformations of Gorenstein local algebras with low socle degree

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $A$ be an Artinian Gorenstein local commutative and Noetherian $K$--algebra, with maximal ideal $M$. In the present paper we prove a structure theorem describing such kind of $K$--algebras satisfying $M^4=0$. We use this result in order to prove that such a $K$--algebra $A$ has rational Poincaré series and it is always smoothable in any embedding dimension, if $\dim_K M^2/M^3 \le 4$. We also prove that the generic Artinian Gorenstein local $K$--algebra with socle degree three has rational Poincaré series, in spite of the fact that such algebras are not necessarily smoothable.

Isomorphism classes of short Gorenstein local rings via Macaulay's inverse system

In this paper we study the isomorphism classes of Artinian Gorenstein local rings with socle degree three by means of Macaulay's inverse system. We prove that their classification is equivalent to the projective classification of the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb P ^{n }$ of degree three. This is an unexpected result because it reduces the study of this class of local rings to the homogeneous case. The result has applications in problems concerning the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb_d (\mathbb P^n)$ and in relation to the problem of the rationality of the Poincaré series of local rings.
